Camel Milk Anyone?
Soy milk and rice milk are old hat. So why not try Camel's milk - or maybe some camelbert cheese?

Nutraingredients reports that Camel milk may soon appear in European supermarkets. The milk is three times higher in Vitamin C than cows milk (src) - and lower in saturated fat.
A camel dairy in Mauritania even makes a soft cheese from the milk - called 'camelbert'.
Not to be outdone, a chocolatier from Vienna is using powdered camel milk to make the world's first camel chocolate. The manufacturer intends to ship 50 tons of the chocolate back to the middle east - targeting wealthy tourists staying in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
"Milk is money" says the United Nations FAO dairy expert. I'm sure the (cow) dairy industry would agree.
I am also trying to get my hands on camels milk in australia. I live in Sydney. I have tried to contact the camel farmers society in Western Australia with no reply. Have you had any luck getting it?

ReplyCamels will thrive in the USA S.W. due to the climate .I am suprised the NAvajo nation having such big tracts of lands in New Mexico have not brought camels and milk them, did you know that apart from milk and cheese you can also make soap and other products out of the milk
As far as Australia I am also suprised cause for what I have read Austrlia has the last herds of wild camels.
ReplyLots of camels in Central Autralia

ReplyThis is the bad thing about the USA we import everything why not just grow are own Camels in the USA definetly would grow in Southern Texas,New Mexico and Arizona and the land is there, vast land tracts....They can easily be exported from Australia and raised in New Mexico,Arizona and Northern Mexico where labor is even cheaper.
Why not propose this to the Navajo nation and others, even as a tourist venue, sell camel milk, soap out of the milk, camel rides.
They can buy the milking equiptment from Israel.
I think the oBama administration would help in this, since they say they want to create jobs
and Southern Texas and the American S.W.need them,so this would be a source of jobs

ReplyDr. Nagpal, I am a medical professional in the US who is trying to get camel milk into the US. It will not be allowed in the US until the law is changed to include camalids in the terminology. The FDA and the US Pastuerization Board have asked me to submit a proposal to change the law so that it can be submitted for testing to start the process which is long and involved. I will be testifying within the next couple of months before the FDA to get the law changed. I hope that we can work together on this for the import of the milk into the USA. It is against the law at the present to sell the milk in any form and it is a federal crime. I have spoken with a Mr. Gary Gutherie, an importer, who I believe has contacted you but he is not of aware of this so I wish to make it known to you and will be very excited to see the camel milk come into the USA and hope to be able to do studies and to offer it to my patients. Thank you. Dr. Millie Hinkle
Dr.Hinkel why bring the milk with all the FDA restrictions, why not bring the caMELS TO aRIZONA AND nEW mEXICO AND ESTABLISH YOUR OWN CAMEL FARMS AND GET THE MILKING DEVICES FROM iSRAEL WOULD BE MOREFECIBLE SINCE THE MILK WOULD BE PRODUCED IN TEH usa.
You can creat your own camel herds from circus and zoo camels already in the USA and New Mexico land is cheap now...
ReplyRod,
This shows how little the public knows about the milk industry. First of all it is illegal to sell the milk anywhere until the law is passed which I got passed. Now we must develop test kits to test the milk for pathogens so that it can be sold then we will be able to start the dairies anywhere. Also there are not that many camel who can be milked. They are mostly wild and will not release their milk unless they are tame and handled gently and they do not release the milk unless the baby is there nursing, They are not like cows!!! Camels are very expensive since I had the law passed but we are working on getting more camel into the US but the price for even a cheap camel is 10's of thousands of dollars. Also to set up a dairy with all the requirements of the government(it doesn't matter where you have the dairy) the restrictions are many and the expense is millions of dollars to set up even a small dairy to meet FDA standards which are required in every state. Hope this answers some of your questions. Please contact me at hinkle.millie@gmail.com for further questions. Dr. Hinkle
ReplyAnyone interested There is already a Camel diary farm in California called Oasis Camel dairy, but they are using the dairy right now for just making soap.
Anyone interesting in learning camel raisng can contact them.
Maybe buy camels from them and within the USA and raise them in neighboring Nevada,Arizona and New Mexico where there is more land, lower taxes and lots of cheap labor.
I would definetly do this than try to bring it into the USA due to the FDA restrictions
for those interested in camel milk in other staes if there are restrictions on airlines ,the camel milk can be sent by truck or train just like they do with cow's milk.
ReplyRod,
Again, sorry to disappoint you but it is illegal to transport the camel milk across state lines by any means in the US at this time. I have had the law passed to allow the sale of the milk but it must pass FDA approval to be transported across any state lines or to be sold within any state until the dairy is licensed by the Interstate Milking Commission and the FDA. This applies in every state in the US. Also it cost thousands and thousands of dollars to start even a small camel dairy. The dairy in California only has a few camel and they are not allowed to sell it either until the FDA sets up the requirements of how the milk is to be tested. All milk is tested in the US for pathogens and antibiotic residue and the kits must be developed for the camel to even be tested. It should all happen within the next 10-12 months so just hang on a little bit longer. If you have questions you may contact me at hinkle.millie@gmail.com
