Camel Milk Anyone?
Soy milk and rice milk are old hat. So why not try Camel's milk - or maybe some camelbert cheese?

Nutraingredients reports that Camel milk may soon appear in European supermarkets. The milk is three times higher in Vitamin C than cows milk (src) - and lower in saturated fat.
A camel dairy in Mauritania even makes a soft cheese from the milk - called 'camelbert'.
Not to be outdone, a chocolatier from Vienna is using powdered camel milk to make the world's first camel chocolate. The manufacturer intends to ship 50 tons of the chocolate back to the middle east - targeting wealthy tourists staying in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
"Milk is money" says the United Nations FAO dairy expert. I'm sure the (cow) dairy industry would agree.

Maybe I'd buy powdered camel's milk if they sold it.
ReplyInteresting. Around here (I live in Wisconsin) we have cheesemakers that make goat's milk cheese, sheep's milk cheese, bison milk cheese, and even llama milk cheese. Camel cheese would definitely be the next to hit the scene. I don't know how many people here would actually buy it though (unless it's really delicious)
ReplyAny word on the lactose content?
ReplyWhat is it that camels eat that would make the milk higher in vitamin C? I mean, I never thought that cow's milk would be an optimal source of vitamin C, so I don't know if 3x that is really a big difference, but it is an interesting difference.

Replythis is weird... but I'm sure that almost as soon as it's out it'll be in Dubai. I'm usually not into animal milk, but I'm curious. I wonder if I can a ticket to Dubai, haven't been there for a while. Good exuse to go: I have to buy chocolate. hahaha

ReplyI think, there's a big future in camel's milk, esp. with the growing number of people with lactose intolerance
Replyits free of lactoae, rich in vitamin C, iron and vitamin B. And the most thing its low in fat. Tast and smells different but the is no harm at all. Can be drunk hot or cold add whatever flavour you wish choco, herbs..etc. I am located in dubai...:)
ReplyI wonder if heating (especially-but not limited to- long time and/or high temps) camel's milk would reduce/destroy its nutritive components?
ReplyCamel's milk lactose free, low fat, Camelbert cheese. Interesting revelations. Are there any figures/statistics on production of milk, with regional/country-wide break up, with cost of production, in organised farming and un-organised settlement farms. It appears the production is un-organised with nomadic style production. I suggest if attention to organise and devise ways to lower the production costs, with pasturisation/branding can bring healthy income, and nutrition gap in developing countries importing powerded milk from New Zealand, EU, with high freight costs. GCC countries has resources to organise the production, brand/package with nutrition, therapeutic milk, with cheese can bring the product international recognition to EU, US, Japanese markets, with backing from Pharmaceuticals.
ReplyPakistan produce buffalo milk which I call horny milk, as population growth is 4.5% per annum. I guess the camel milk may be horny too, and will be prefered with the ageing population of the EU for sexual drive, and possibly population growth among the ageing/retired.
How much is the price compared to that of cow's milk?
ReplyWill there be a viable market in the US?
How can I obtain the milk? Shipping and all?
Does it come under the standards of the FDA?
From what I am hearing it would be a great product.
Will their be any sabotage from the cattle dairy industry?
the price for one bound is $17.50. i like to now if the price acceptable by the consumer.

for that you need to come to India you will get fresh milk in jodhpur .
ReplyCamel milk is higher in vitamin C than cow (or human) milk, but.... it's about the same as the vitamin C level of an apple (cow milk is more like what you find in a fig).
For camel milk fans in Los Angeles: there are a lot of llama farms in Southern California. Llama are closely related to camels, and the milks are probably comparable. You might find some llama farm and see if they sell milk. Go the the LA County Fair; there will be a llama exhibit staffed by people who could probably give you some information.
Replyyoure the coolest ever, i saw your camel milk comment : ) i love your hair!
ReplyMy husband and I both love goats milk and cheese. In Albany, New York there is a small health food store that carries what sometimes seems like an infinite number of goats and sheeps milk cheeses. When I come to British Columbia I always bring about four pounds of some of this cheese. These cheeses are not available here and if they are, we don't know where. I hope we get to visit your dairy. ReplyI buy camel milk from an organic store here in Dammam, Saudi Arabia called Wataniyyah. The problem is they only receive two shipments a week, and the quantity of organic camel milk available for sale is very low, so timing is everything (I assume in reality, all camel milk is organic, right?). Where can I purchase Camelicious in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia (i.e. Khobar, Dammam area)?

camel milk has draumatic peculiarities. High in vitamin c and other vital nutrients and a nutritious food in the arid and semi arid areas of the world
ReplyI can not wait to purchase camel's milk! I just hope that camel's milk doesn't become overcommercialized and overprocessed the way that so many food items have in modern days.
ReplyHello everyone,
ReplyCamel milk has bit of lactose but those who have lactoseintolerence can drink it without any problems. It's future is great and exciting. It also has many medicinal properties. It's high in vitamin C, contains insulin and iron. Camel milk is the milk of the future because many areas in the worl are beng threatened by water shortages. Camels can go without water for months!
I dont doubt that camel milk is healthy, as is all raw, unpastuerised milk from animals that graze on what nature intended them to graze on.
But with all due respect the bedouin arabs 1) never fed camels processed feed (you are what you eat, this applies to all animals and bad feed = bad milk) 2) never pastuerised the milk.
You can buy and drink supermarket camels milk until the camels come home in Dubai but you might as well drink white coca cola.
All raw milk from pasture fed healthy animals is good for you in limited quantites.

By the way, I love drinking it cold. No flavor added, I love it! In fact, it is the only type of milk I enjoy the taste of (the milk tastes a bit like drinking animal broth, if that makes any sense). Anyway, try an ice cold glass with a handful of dates...DELICIOUS!
