eDiets Express

eDiets has long been the premier provider of on-line weight loss programs. Lately popularity has been waning - what are eDiets doing to counter the fall in subscribers - and are they still worth using?

Note that eDiets Express has been renamed Deliciously Yours. (April 2007)

eDiets is around 10 years old. They offer subscription based tools and planners for a large range of commercial diet plans. If you know exactly what diet you intend to follow (i.e. Glycemic Impact Diet, or Atkins, or Slim-Fast etc.) - then eDiets is a good place to get customized meal plans.

Unfortunately there has been growing disappointment with eDiets: subscriptions have taken a tumble from 247,000 to 205,000 (15% - src). On the back of such data - eDiets has now introduced eDiets Express (formerly FreshCuisine).

eDiets Express

eDiets Express is a diet delivery service - along with a calorie-controlled meal plan - all the foods are shipped to you. There are already many such businesses operating - often specializing in particular diets - such as the Zone. Diet delivery services are the number one choice for most celebrity-type people. If you had disposable income then why bother with all the cooking?

Dietary Options
eDiets Express offers a broader selection of dietary preferences - such as low sodium, low fat, low cholesterol, carb-controlled, or heart smart. However such services don't come cheap - you are looking at paying between $149 per week to $275 per week!

Delivery US-wide
The food can be delivered to the entire continental US, and subscription comes with access to nutritionists, and the huge informational resources available on eDiets. The main issue with many of these services is the quality of the food - that is, of course - a matter of taste.

Caveat: The number one complaint about eDiets are their billing methods. Make sure you read the terms very carefully before submitting your credit card. Typically there will be a minimum billing term (in the case of Express this is 6 weeks).

UPDATE: Now renamed Deliciously Yours (April 2007)

'm am not a member of ediets. I love the look of the site, the fact they have nutritionists, but I heard about ediets is that dreaded cancellation fee. It gives them money in the short term but ediets lose a lot in good will. Many people only quit temporarily and join back up to the program later. Instead of punishing people for leaving ediets should reward people for staying. I think ediets needs membership rewards that build up as the years pass.
I like the wealth of information that ediets has and the fact they have more than one diet to choose from, but a few of the diets seem kind of fad driven.
I think edites needed to keep Zone and get rid of the blood type diet. I hear the Zone is one of the healthier low carb diets.
The blood type diet strikes me as a bit of a new twist on an old fad. While I don’t do low carb. I also think carb counting diets for diabetic patents under a doctor’s care can be useful.
I also feel ediets an original but easy plans like WW flex points but without zero point foods. I find having to go by a food list kind of hard and I don’t like to be told what I can or cannot eat.
The ediets express seems interesting. It can make money but only time will tell. Does the food taste good? I can cook my own food but not everyone has the time nor likes to shop.

So much of what eDiets has is available for free on line, particularly at SparkPeople.com.

As for eDiets Express I think it will depend on who it compares to Jenny Craig and NutriSystem in expense and taste.

Personally I have hear of too many people gaining the weight back as soon as the stop using the prepared meals.

Looks like eDiets has made quite a bit doing what they do, and they bought up this other company (Nutrio) one assumes to do more proprietary product development: (src)

I joined eDiets express about a month ago when it was actually still named eDiets FreshCuisine. So far I have lost 14 pounds and I am very happy with it. I never joined eDiets before this for their diet plans or nutritionist support, but after using the resources I'm glad I have the access now. I was on both NutriSystem and Medifast but could not stick with either, Medifast was just horrid and NutriSystem's food was hard to stick on after a few days. The eDiets food is prolly better than stuff I can cook at home LOL. It is not as expensive as it sounds when you consider you don't have to shop for groceries really any more. I plan to stick with the program until I drop another 40 pounds. If you have any questions feel free to email me. I give my thumbs up to this plan.

This is great to hear. I just ordered ediets express after doing some research on it. It is a highly recommended option, especially since the food is FRESH and free of preservatives. I also tried Nutrisystem and the food starts tasting the same after a while and there is a ton of trans fat, hydrognated (?) oil, fructose syrup and alot of preservatives in their food. I cancelled after a month. I need fresh options and thank GOD - no grocery shopping (I hate the grocery store with a passion so this fits me). I am 34 and just had a hysterectomy - I have a rather demanding job and am in grad school - I see this as my best option to get the weight down - I need to drop about 50-75 pounds so I am hopeful this will help me. Folks say just cut back and exercise. ITs so much more involved than this. I have cut back and I walk close to 4 miles a day and strength train but if your metabolism is not balanced and you don't know how to go about "fixing" it through a balanced diet, options like this are the best way, in my book, to go. And to the reviewer that says you gain weight after you go off the packaged meals - thats the same no matter what diet you are on. If you don't learn to appreciate portion control, you will go right back up. I wish everyone luck, whose objectives are to lose weight. I understand your pain and struggles and will keep you in my prayers for your success!! Feel free to email me if you want to know more of how I am doing on this plan. More than happy to share.

Hi Andrea
I have been on ediets now for about 9 weeks and have lost 18 lbs. I have a lot of weight to lose too about 140 lbs. I have enjoyed ediets a lot the food is tasty and fresh. The food is filling I opted for the 5 day program so I can get out into the real world and have lunch or dinner with my friends. On those 2 days I eat very sensibly. Why pay this money and blow it on the days I don't eat it.
Please do not order the Turkey Bolenese it is awful. The muffins are great also the Chicken with cheesy potatoes is awesome.
I am not a real big fan of super hot spicy food so I am not to fond of the Chipolte dishes.
Let me know if you need any help. Sometimes it is nice to know someone else on the program. We can share our likes and dislikes.
Good Luck !
Corrine

Hi all- fyi...ediet express has made a very smart move here in assuming Fresh Cuisine. There are several other companies out there (think Zone at home) who have attempted to buy out Fresh Cuisine, but have had to go with what was once a sister (I think) venture called Pure Foods. At any rate, the recipies and many chefs are virtually identical, but the only major difference here is there are so many buy-outs, swaps, etc...that now the dust has settled and each of these companies is attempting to determine where their price point will fall. I assure you, ediets express not only has the lowest price piont (and EXACTLY the same menu), they also don't charge you an arm and a leg for shipping (40%) less. I really hope they end up with all of the business from what today is considered the take over giant of what was once Zone Nation. They won't budge on their 20% increase in price of their predecesor, and the customer service is pathetic. And, as Monami indicates in her entry, the food is really good- and i can't wait to be back on this program- at a price I can afford. I thought after the death of Zone Nation I would never be able to purchase my food at a normal price. Hope this helps. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. CC

CAUTION!!! - watch this company's cancellation fee. Tried their recipe-type diet for 2 weeks and found I did not have either the time to cook (single male)or that their meals were that much different than any of the free-diet plans found throughout the internet. Cancelled and was then surprised by their "minimum" number of months membership and / or cancellation fee.

Don't place your credit card to see the menu they try to up sell your for the good meals. Instant Oatmeal & Rasin brand are not fresh food they are "canned or powdered" like. Five minutes after I put my card in I tried to cancel they said their are no cancelations. Thre is no supervisor to talk to. I will call newspapers and Television to expose the fraud and bad will I feel this company projects.

Here's a copy of an email I sent to Ediets today, May 31, 2007. If you care about this sort of thing, please let Ediets know and to pass along this info to female friends and anyone else who cares about the health of girls and women in our country.

Dear Ediets personnel,

I must tell you that I strongly resent article titles such as "I Lost Weight, Found a Husband."

The attitudes represented in articles such as this imply to women
1) that the main reason to take care of your HEALTH is to appear a certain way to men,
2) that women who are single must be so because of some physical flaw, and
3) that a woman without a husband is somehow sad and incomplete.

Yuck.

You should be ashamed for perpetuating these stereotypes, which are at best ridiculous and at worst harmful to girls and women.

I am seriously questioning whether your site is the right place for me to work on positive weight loss for the sake of health since you appear to be willing to stoop to any low in order to trick women and sell your service. Weight loss is a serious health issue, and for you to blatantly attempt to belittle women and undermine confidence demonstrates that your business may be a predatory one, rather than a service-oriented one.

I do not trust you, and I will be forwarding this article title to other women at my college and encouraging them to question whether Ediets.com is a respectable entity. I will also be reviewing the "contract" for my own service to decide how to best and most cheaply extricate myself from it as well as prevent other women at my women's college from falling prey to this negative advertising that is a clear attempt to make women feel weak, desparate, and insecure, rather than to promote strong, healthy attitudes. I am also looking forward to making analysis of this kind of adver-article a topic in the media awareness component of my classes next semester.

Does any woman NEED Ediets? At present, I must say no. Should any woman who cares about the well-being of girls and women allow herself or anyone she knows to send any money your way? Apparently not. Does your organization make a habit of using deceptive tactics designed to undermine women? Is this article title an unfortunate, exceptional oversight, or an indication of the philosophy of your business? Must I work to protect my coworkers and students from a business that purports to serve them?

I would appreciate an actual answer to these questions and an explanation for why Ediets has decided to undermine women, rather than empower us.

I like the note at the top that says "be civil"...

Howard Moss above is correct... I made the same unfortunate mistake... over a holiday weekend so I didn't realize they had charged my account until the next working day.

Keep informed... it is illegal and unethical for eDiets to retain your credit card information before you confirm the order, and it is illegal for them to retain it after posting your order unless you permit them to do so... I have called the supervisor a dozen times, and he doesn't even have the common curtesty to call me back...

WATCH OUT... DON'T ENTER ANY CREDIT CARD INFORMATION... IF YOU NEED INFORMATION ON PRICING WITHOUT CHARGING, CALL EDIETS DIRECTLY, NOT DELICIOUSLY YOURS... THEY WILL NOT HELP YOU WITHOUT CREDIT CARD INFORMATION.

DO NOT GIVE EDIETS.COM YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER!!! You will never be able to reach them to cancel. I did this mistake and I am still trying to cancel through my credit card!!!!!!!! Nice website but biggest scam going around. No answer 800phoneline, no answer to emails,no one at Live Chat, no one at head office! DO THEY EVEN EXIST!
