Ray of Hope: Fat Burning Sunscreen

You have to admire the creativity of some manufacturers. Bliss have developed a sunscreen with "solar activated slender spheres".

I kid you not.

The sunscreen is called Ray of Hope:

In a fat-fighting formulating first, we've preloaded our newest sunscreen with slender spheres™—microscopic molecules that unleash body contouring caffeine (and carnitine and centella asiatica) when they're exposed to the sun. It's a two-in-one.
Body-contouring caffeine? I thought caffeine was something consumed - not applied to the skin. Carnitine is also taken as a supplement (with inconclusive results with regard to fat loss).

Gotu Kola (centella asiatica) however is different. This is applied to the skin and has been shown to help varicose veins (ref).

Why bother going to the gym? Just lie on the beach and apply some Ray of Hope. If that's not enough you could try the Masai Barefoot Technology anti-cellulite sneaker - it even has testimonials.

That is truly ridiculous. Who would actually buy a product like that?

Seriously, what kind of idiots would honestly think that you can just spray something on and lose fat. There is a serious lack of work ethic in this country, and that's a big problem as far as I'm concerned.

People get frantic trying to lose weight that it makes them prone to be taken advantage of.

I just saw an ad for another kind of lotion that has caffeine in it. Oil of Olay Body Smoothing Concentrate has Caffeine and Giseng. Supposedly, it "continuously plumps and lifts surface skin cells with moisture, leaving the skin wall stronger and smoothing its surface texture."

Also, if you Google "lotion caffeine," there's apparently been a study on mice that a lotion with caffeine prevented skin cancer.

I worry about our addiction to caffeine and stimulants, especially here in the USA. You almost can't find desserts anymore that don't have chocolate in them. Caffeine is in all sorts of drinks that you wouldn't expect (Border's Cafe has it in smoothies!) And now you can find it in lotions. I'm allergic to caffeine (the best way to get over a chocolate addiction, I can tell you that), so maybe I just pay attention to it more, but I just wonder how many more people will turn up with caffeine allergies as it becomes more pervasive - I mean, heck, you can get caffeinated water now!

Topically applied caffeine will temporarily cause your skin cells to swell and plump up, reducing the appearance of cellulite. They are putting it a couple of different lotions now and it actually does work, but you have to continously use the lotion or you don't get the effect. It's definitely a quick fix gimmick thing, not any permanent cure for weight loss. But some people will try ANYTHING. Betcha 100 bucks there'll be comments on this thread asking where you can buy this crap.

I stand corrected about topical caffeine. However - I still feel that virtually all cellulite treatments are "smoke and mirrors".

I dare somebody to plaster themselves with a bottle of "Ray of Hope" -- and see what happens.

Bizarre indeed. Another message out there saying - don't worry about eating well and exercising, just put on this lotion/take this pill etc

Im sure it will sell pretty well as the consumer will be faced with the option of either:

a) buy sunscreen or
b) buy sunscreen that may make you slimmer

I know that most of the girls I know would probably go for the latter.

There once was a time when I would have bought a 50 gallon drum of the stuff and bathed in it. I have fell for so many fat loss scams over the years and I would have bought this one hook line and sinker.

Now I have to go mainline some calorad.

Where can you buy this?

;-)
Just wanted Spectra to get her $100!

Well, Jim - I might have taken your dare, BUT I have so much cellulite on this body that with that many cells plumpin' up, I might look 10 pounds heavier!!

Unfortunately, people are so desparate to find the "magic pill" that they'll believe pretty much anything. As Ross said, even if something like this worked, it still wouldn't do anything for the person's level of health, or give them any of the other benefits of exercise.

People are so concerned with their level of bodyfat that they seem to have conveniently forgotten that exercise and eating right are about being healthy, not about being skinny.

All of that being said, I was at the beach yesterday, and after I got home I saw this post. Why couldn't I have read it just a bit sooner?!? ;)

This seems like the same type of thing as the skin creams made by Olay, Avon, etc that say they get rid of cellulite. It's just combining two products into one package.
I agree, it is pretty silly, but it's a good idea from a marketing standpoint, since something like 75% (or more, can't remember where I read this exactly) of women have cellulite!
It's also really sad that, when 75% (or more) of women have cellulite, including ones who are "normal" weight or underweight, we can't say "gee, that must be a normal part of being a woman who is over the age of 15!". Instead we have to have a cream to "fix" it.

Wait, does anyone know if eating grass-fed bison and drinking raw milk can affect the usefulness of this sunscreen? THANKS! ;)

People are always looking for a easy way out and Bliss spa out of New York obviously knows how appealing this would be to your average women. But like most of us have learned the hard way there is no easy fix. Diet and exercise is most important when it comes to slimming down. But toxins in the body play a part in it too. It is good to detox regularly to help with the build of cellulite. The toxins that build up in our system aren't just from what we eat but the lotions and stuff we put on also play a part. It is alot easier too lose weight and slim down by detoxing, so we can get to those fat cells and shrink em down! I started detoxing about 13 days ago and I feel better than ever. I have noticed a difference in my body and skin. Definately something to try to help you lose weight and get healthy.

OMG, seriously this one is a classic. How stupid can it get? I thought diet lip gloss was the best idea going but this takes it by a long shot. Why would anyone in their right mind think rubbing something on their skin would help with weight loss? Water loss, perhaps, but that's pointless so what is the point?

I think that this is truly ridiculous. What will they think of next? I think that people should try to lose weight the old-fashioned way. I am the writer for a weightloss website called [no self promotion]. Check it out and tell me what you think!

this is just a gimmick to make some money

they do NOT claim that it is a weight loss product, only that it's BODY CONTOURING...which I believe refers to the above mentioned cellulite plumping. I don't think that this is a terrible idea at all and I bet it's at least temporarily effective.
