The Reality Diet
The Reality Diet is a new book by Florida-based cardiologist Dr. Steven Schnur. Schnur joins the ranks of several other prominent cardiologists who have authored diet books (such as Arthur Agatston, Robert Atkins, Dean Ornish).
Schnur used to be in practice with the South Beach Diet author Dr Agatston.
However, in contrast to the South Beach, it seems the Reality Diet is very much a typical low-fat diet - with a strong emphasis on fiber. Schnur promotes the "2:90 rule" - all carbs must have at least 2 grams of fiber per 90 calorie serving. Lean proteins are advised (with an upper limit of 25-30% of total caloric intake).
Exercise is also an essential part of the program.
"What prompted me to write this book is that I was seeing patients several years ago with a lot of side effects from the low-carb diets," Dr. Steven Schnur said. "Patients had headaches, constipation. They were very weak, very tired." (via)I must confess it is difficult not to feel jaded or slightly cynical at what seems to be another deliberate reaction to the ebbing low-carb fad. The endless tirade of books seems to go round in circles - with each book offering contrary advice. Ironically we still keep getting fatter.
I suspect that most people would lose weight if they had the support and one-on-one guidance of a medical professional. Translating this into a mass-market book doesn't necessarily guarantee the same end result.
Since he practiced with Dr. Agatston, he should know that South Beach is not a low-carb diet! It is fairly low-carb for the first two weeks only, to rid people of sugar cravings. The difference is that on South Beach, you don't have to count things up, you just get a list of good foods, foods to avoid, and foods to enjoy occasionally. But other than that difference, Dr. A advocates foods that are high in fiber and lean protein, just like Dr. S. So basically the guy's tweaking it a little and trying to make $ off his ex-colleague. Shame.
ReplyThey need to know what about the grains? Even whole grains are bad for you. Look at how corn and grainy foods fatten up cows. This is what you will be if you eat a hunk full of cereals, breads, and rice. Did you know that an Apple contains 5 grams of fiber? It's better off to have an organic fruit cup breakfast than a bowl of insulin spiking cereal. Plus, you get a natural form of fiber. Maybe I'll have apples and nuts instead of cereal.
Plus, you need grass-fed ANIMAL protein, not Soy protein. Try bison, ostrich, or low-mercury fish, such as salmon or mahi mahi. Lean animal protein not grass-fed is still not healthy, as the omega fats are imbalanced. They need to also know the importance of omega 3 fatty acids and every body has a different metabolic type. Diabetics can't eat grains at all.
ReplyWhy do they keep attacking Low Carb ?
Are they worried that they will not make as much money being doctor to all the sick ?
For all those people out there that are dead against Low Carbohydrate diets, research the subject, read the books, and show us clinical proof that the diet our ancestors evolved on (pre-argriculture) is un-healthy.
The vast majority of citizens in the Western world are 'not' on a low carb diet, and we have an obesity epidemic.
These Diet book authors pushing low fat, are not going to solve anything!!
ReplyDave, do you really think that all of the obese people in American got that way due to low-fat diets?
America's problem is overeating, pure and simple - not the presence of grains or the lack of protein.
ReplyJames, if you will read the diabetic food chart you will find that infact diabetics are required to have whole grains as part of their diet...I should know....I am a diabetic....you need to go to the american diabetes asso.web site and do some reading....
ReplyOnce again the name of the diet is far more important than the actual diet. There are just not that many diets out there to justify all these different names they are given.
I think I will write a book on the “Imaginary Diet” outlining all the weight I imagine I would loose if I followed it.
That way my readers can just keep eating what they want, which is what most people do anyway after buying the latest diet book.

ReplyJessica, you obviously did not read the reality diet book. The reality Diet is based on a fiber driven diet where as the South Beach diet is based on glycemic index. Therefore they are two totally diff. concepts. Secondly the problem with South Beach is that people never get out of phase one, because as soon as they enter phase two, they tend to gain their weight back. By the way, in the South Beach diet the weight loss in the first two weeks is basically water loss. In addition sugar cravings cannot be cured in two weeks. By the way, I did not realize that Dr. A had a monopoly on diet books.
ReplyAT New York, I totally agree. To Jay Allen, if you read the Reality Diet you will know that obviously it does address portion control and calories in order to promote weight loss. It does state that the problem indeed is overeating. To Jessica, how can the South Beach Diet be so healthy when it tells you to avoid healthy, fiber rich and nutrient rich foods like potatoes and fruits and whole grains. It is totally contradicting...now you can't eat this and now you can! Do you really think that a two week period is going to rid everyone of their sugar cravings? What happens when you start including other foods which contain more sugars whether natural or not, as you move from phase to phase...purely weight gain. The South Beach diet in my opinion gives people a false sense of weight loss. By the way, on the Reality Diet you do not have to count things up either, only follow some basic rules. There is a list of recommended high fiber foods referred to as "the equivalents." I found this list very helpful to plan my meals. I do not agree that Dr. Schnur is trying to make $ off his ex-colleague. Dr. S actually takes a risk in writing a book which tells the truth in hopes that people will want to learn about good nutrition and how to lose the pounds for good. This is a huge challenge since our nation is one where people are constantly looking for extreme, quick and unhealthy ways to lose weight.
ReplyTo low carb Dave, remember that the high protein diets our ancestors evolved on have no comparison to today's world. Our ancestors would expend lots of energy while hunting and laboring, unlike the sedentary ways of our world today. Therefore, they stayed thin then partly because of all the calories they would burn.
"how can the South Beach Diet be so healthy when it tells you to avoid healthy, fiber rich and nutrient rich foods like potatoes and fruits and whole grains.
aside from potatoes, it does not tell you to avoid fruits and whole grains in the long term.

Response:
Potatoes contain so much carbohydrates that it spikes your blood sugar. Corn, wheat, rye, and whole grains should be cut down, because the grains contain protein, but is bad protein that isn't design in your body. For instance, Gluten from wheat is an example. Other fruits and veggies contain less carbohydrates, and has the most antioxidents. Plus, you need some grass-fed meat, not these so-called lean meats. Grass-fed meats contain more omega 3 fatty acids and more CLA. Grass-fed bison is the best of the bunch. Remember, we have some amino acids that we can't manufacture, and it isn't found in soy products. That's why you need animal protein in your diets.
ReplyInteresting.
ReplyI followed the South Beach Diet to a letter & lost 26 lbs! I thought it was a great diet! Although it took me a year to lost the weight, it was well worth the time!

Kathy, look at the box of the Honey Nut Chereos, which has whole grain oats. It only has 2 grams of fiber, with less than 1 grams of it soluable. Now look at a nutritional content of an apple. Apples contain 5 grams of fiber per medium-sized fruit, with most of it soluable. Apples have fewer calories than cereal without milk. Tell me that oats are better than apples.
Replythe title of this caught my eye. i like the idea of a diet book that goes against the silly gimmicks up front. i've tried more diets than i care to admit. and deep down i know that some of them are just a lot of hot air. i can stay on them for a few weeks, but then bam, i'm back towhere i started. from the looks of it, i'll be eating real food on this one so that's a good start. and everyone knows that fiber is healthy.
ReplyMan! I love food! It tastes sooo good!
ReplyOnce we examine the South Beach, Weight Watchers, Akins and nearly every diet you will find that when you reach their last phase they are are eating The Zone Diet.
Dr. Sears explained that the cause is not fat but sugars in the form of highly processed carbs. Eat wet carbs and add your good fat with the addition of enough protein. It's all in the palm of your hand.
ReplyA lot of these diets ahve there flaws and end up in most cases disappointing other dieters. On the other hand, The Reality Diet is different from all the others as it give correct nutrition information that worked for me.
ReplyI looove Jennifer Lopez! She is definetly my idol:).. I'm about the same height as her, maybe a couple inches shorter, and I have a huge butt..LoL. I never thought she was too skinny, I love her body. But, I'm about 20 pounds heavier than her, maybe 25.. When, I'm the same weight as her about, I lose most of my ass. I don't know what to do...
ReplyHi,
I have on the Reality Diet for three weeks, and have lost eight pounds. I feel great, and the truth is, you eat about 25 grams of fiber on this diet every day. Since my father had type II diabetes, I'm trying to avoid it, and this diet is just amazing! I plan on eating this way the rest of my life. I eat more vegetables and fruit than I ever have, along with whole grains, and lean animal protein. It's a very healthy diet. I found it in Woman's World magazine, and I've been using the recipes I found there from the diet, for the past three weeks. I just ordered the book. I am thrilled to have found this diet!! I need a lot of fiber, and I wasn't getting enough before. Now, through the right vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, I'm getting more each day than ever in my life.
Try it! You won't be disappointed! I gain weight in the middle, and today, for the first time in three years, put on my favorite capris! Yeehaw! And I feel and look so much better. You can too. This is the first time I've ever posted on a diet board. I was searching the internet for diabetes research.
Good luck all!
Cathy
ReplyI just ordered all the components for this diet and frankly i am excited to try it because it sounds normal. I have done many diets to loose a small amount of fat, be healthy, and stay in shape. I have tried ALL the diets, and I hate them. If you tell me to not eat or drink something,I will want to do it more, hence falling off the diet, and feeling a huge sense of guilt. I get sick of eating protein and fat all the time, and feeling like carbs are such a bad thing. It is really all about eating clean, portion control and exercising...if you do that you will stay healthy, and fit. The people who write the books, and menus on things like this help give me the extra push i need to keep a healthy lifestyle going. And when you think about living a healthy lifestyle, you want it to be as comfortable as possible so you will continue.
ReplyI hate cravings, and feeling guilty for eating things that are actually GOOD and ok to eat...not BAD. For example...A portion controlled pasta dinner anyday of the week should be ok to eat. I also crave chocolate, but i try to eat the nutrition bars that are chocolate instead of a hershey's. I should not feel guilty afterwards b/c a specific diet states that carbs on this day is not ok, and chocolate is forbidden b/c you are training your body to adapt to certain glycemic levels, and also training your mind not to crave. It sucks! The reason I was attracted to this diet is b/c it seems to be guilt free after eating things we like, and to me that is important. Again the "rule" thing within a diet makes me cave.
Granted, these other diets work, but are we really HAPPY doing them??...i think that is the most important factor here. I am really looking forward to reading this book, and trying this out...it can't hurt!
I also agree with the exercise being promoted. I hate people who advertise diets,or "magic" pills that will make you loose weight with out exercising. It is common sense, or should be, that YOU NEED to exercise in order to loose any weight. How people fall for these gymics puzzels me. I really feel that this may be a normal eating and exercise regimen that can work for everyone as long as you are willing to give it a try. Stop knocking it b/c you think that other diets are better,or that he describes the others as being no carb when they are really not... the author is trying to sell his book and diet, why wouldn't he pick on other ones...we all would, to get our point across, like we are doing now in a sense. You know what will work for you and what won't...all you can do is try or not try...but don't spread negativity b/c you choose a different direction. Do what ultimately makes YOU happy. I am still puzzeled why a few people were angry or upset over yet another Dr presenting his idea of the ideal diet?????To me it is something new, an quite possibly helpful..why complain about it unless you are insecure or doubtful about your own lifestyle.
just a thought!
The only "Reality" about books like the "Reality Diet"
Replyby Steven Schnur, is the book is discounted because its not exactly the "best seller, I'm sure if he had a way of charging the Insurance companies for his great book, he would. tagging it on lets face it the "south Beach Diet" was being offered by Dr.Schnur in his Miami Beach office, until he realized how much money was being made by the author / associate in his office, out the door went that book, now when you visit his office, he is so preoccupied in selling and autographing his great book that he forgot some where along the line that he's a DOCTOR, please don't ask him about any healthy tips about eating, he will tell you to BUY $ his book, what nerve, the gull, to sell something that should be offered by a PHYSICIAN LIKE proper diet, well, good luck buying the book, but if your looking for VIGARA, its apparent that Steven Schnur has no hesitation signing his name to a script and don't worry, just like "Rush" you can have it dispensed in a friends name, "What a great service"
Hi, I'm a 15 year old male. I some how stumbbled on to this site. All I want to say girls in the curveier the better. Guy don't like stick thin girls, as you all my think. Old Lindsay Lohan an Hiliary Duff are very good. Not stick thin, like now adays.

ReplyI too got the Reality Diet Book, and read it that day. I was so interested in finding something that made me eat healthier. Being a single mid-twentysomething with a 24/7 job it's hard to eat right and feel good about it. I plan to combine the Reality Diet, and the Snack Factor Diet (also featured in Woman's World this summer) and make my own. Ultimately, it's what many of you said... it's what works for you!
ReplyA few years ago, my family discovered the South Beach Diet. We all got on the bandwagon and lost a great deal of weight. Being from good peasant stock, we're all physically pretty strong - including the women - and basically healthy. As happy as we were with the results, at first, over time we gradually discovered brand-new groups of cravings, we tended to be tired a lot, constipated most of the time, and seemed to be losing muscle mass in equal proportion to the fat. I had to get off his long-term program in order to get my life back.
Right now, I am several weeks into the Reality diet and I'm truly impressed. Being just a rather imperfect humanoid, I am prey to all kinds of devious tricks designed by my subconscious to get things between my jaws. Because I happen to have a metabolism suitable to a peasant woman making a serious attempt to work herself to death, and because I have spent most of the last three years at either a desk or a computer, I'm getting decidedly fat. The caloric balance necessary to counteract that, while eating a normal diet, would reduce me to something like two cups of lettuce, one tomato and three raisins per day. Could I figure it out and replan my eating? Yes, of course. That, however would take time and energy that I simply don't have to devote to the project. This nice Dr. Schnur has figured it all out in a way that could work for me and all I have to do is cook his lovely recipes and eat a quantity of food that will satisfy me without a lot of inconvenient cravings. So much easier!!!
And into the bargain, he has explained, in language that makes sense to me, why some of the things I would do otherwise will induce cravings and why, even though I had gotten nicely slim, I felt miserable a lot of the time.
Another thing I like is that the recipes are single portion - no leftovers to whisper my name at midnight.
I think Dr. Agatston did a terrific thing in developing his diet, but there was more to discover. Dr. Schnur went to the root of the problems inherent in SouthBeach and created a better diet. It's a shame that Dr. Schnur's book doesn't get the recognition that Dr. Agatston's has, because people should hear about it.
ReplyOne thing that I have learned from years of watching my weight is that diets come and go. Gone are the fad diets of yesterday. Yet to come are the fad diets of tomorrow. But even after trying all of these diets, we are still battling weight problems. I have yet to meet someone who has lost weight on a fad diet and kept it off.
