One Day Diet: Scams and Science

A one day diet is an extreme way of 'zig-zagging' food intake. Rather than small variations, every other day is essentially a fast. This style of eating may not be particularly sustainable or sociable - however it does have a small following.

Unfortunately there is at least one company that has been quick to fraudulently capitalize on the idea.

The Scam
This company (operating under a number of names) has run radio advertisements offering to pay $1000 for a 'diet study'. Just that claim alone is enough to put most people off. A quick examination of the site showed that the so-called 'survey' you must undertake was not even recording any data - it was all a trick. You can fill out the forms - but they were not even submitted back to the web site!

Then comes the Better Business Bureau report:

One Day Diet/Products for Life/DietStudy.com is looking for participants in, what they claim, is a weight-loss study. When a BBB rep, posing as a potential customer, called the company, she was told that the typical weight loss was 20-30 pounds in 90 days. The “One Day Diet” consists of weight-loss tablets, supplements and dieting every other day. There is a $150 “deposit” for the first month and $75 per month charge for the following months. At the end of the 3-month “study,” the money is supposed to be refunded, and $1,000 is supposed to be paid to the participant. The BBB rep was also told that the company is a BBB member. Not true! 118 complaints have been filed against this Wisconsin company, and they have the Bureau’s lowest rating.
One Diet-Blog reader reported following the diet and losing 16 pounds. She explained the diet as this:"Every other day is actually a semi-fast, during which you may eat unlimited raw fruits and veggies. On opposite days, you may eat what you wish."

I suggest you avoid the so-called diet study - and save your money.

UPDATE (May 2007): We have received the following response from Julie Hawkins of Products for Life:

"We are not a Wisconsin company. When we began our study we hired an outside phone room to take the calls. We had a couple rogue sales reps that really gave misinfo. We do not claim any weight loss expectation at all and we were not members of the BBB. It is unfortunate that misinfo was given, but not fair to focus on this. We terminated the relationship with the phone room and all info given to the consumer by any phone room we use has to follow a specific script and cannot deviate from it. We have since implemented safeguards and training so that call centers adhere to the correct information."

The Science of Eating Every Other Day
John Daugirdas has developed his own diet - "The QOD Diet" - based on the principles of fasting every other day. It's obvious that Daugirdas has spent considerable time researching out the science behind the concept.

The alternate days of fasting (or near-fasting) deplete glycogen stores - however Daugirdas recommends taking in high-quality protein during the off days to prevent any lean mass (muscle) depletion.

Our long-term energy storage bank is fat, and short-term debit account is glycogen. If you eat constantly, your glycogen stores are full up. So you are always then vulnerable to weight gain, even if your caloric intake is not very high. Any transient excess of food now can no longer go to glycogen - so it goes to fat. This is NOT balanced off by short term periods of fasting, since your body simply draws down on your glycogen stores, and has no need to go to your fat stores.
Daugirdas' QOD diet (QOD is Latin for "every other day"), is obviously not a fad diet book written for mass market profits. It's an experimental work based on methods that may have some merit.

However - in this age of eating disorders - and the multitude of psychological issues that surround eating - I would not recommend fasting for weight loss. Young women (in particular) do not need their meal-skipping habits validated. Also if you have any kind of blood glucose sensitivity - severe energy depletion on the off days can play havoc with energy levels (not to mention the irritability).

Greetings,

I completed the study in early August and lost 17 pounds. It was difficult diet and required will power ,but it was overall a good experience with the exception of being lied to by the salesman.

The $1000. was a motivating factor when I signed up and was told that I would be rewarded the grand if I simply followed the program. I had my doubts in the beginning. Early on,I asked about the 1000 people quota and was told that I signed up early enough and it would not be a factor. Even though it is written in the contract, I feel misled and frauded by being told that I would be financially rewarded for my hard efforts.

I suggested thatin the future they inform people ASAP that were dropped from the study due to the 1000 quota limit. It consumed alot of energy jumping through their hoops with requirments to complete the study including some out of pocket expenses to find in the end the fabulous cash incentive was simply a mirage. Congradulations to the fortunate that got paid, and regrets to the majority that fell for the scam. My consolation is that they will reimburse me for my supplements. Though, I lost the weight which is nice, financially I am also lighter by the big fat lie.

A brief update -- I received cash back for the product as part of my agreement for participating in the weight loss study, however, I was not selected as part of the 1000 as the number of people had already been paid. I can understand them having to enroll more than 1000 people. Nice to know they are responding and continuing to keep with their enrollment promise.

SCAM or Not

Just because some people got paid does not clear it from being a scam. They told me it did not matter how much weight you lost, you would still get the $1000. The diet was nothing special. You could get the same results from eating fruit every other day and not eating the wafers. Now they say they are deciding who will, and will not, get paid based on the results. "Go Easy Lady" is right. It is the fact that we were promised something and made to jump through hoops, and they did not deliver. At first I was excited to see how strict they were being to get TRUE study results. That they were not going to just show a bunch of people who lost drastic amounts of weight. Now, is seems that is exactly what they are doing. I had to pay out of pocket to go to the several doctor appointments and take off work, but was assured it would be worth it. As far as I am concerned, congrats to the few who got paid, but it was a scam to the majority who were tricked.

I really wish I had found this website sooner or I never would have wasted my time with this One Day Diet. I signed up, wanting to lose weight and of course also motivated by the $1000. I finished and sent everything in in August, and was told I would get the check about 30 days after that. Well when I didn't recieve the check, I called yesterday, only to find out that I was SCAMMED!! Not only did I not lose very much and gained back everything I lost, but I was counting on that $1000 to help me out with so much. I am being refunded for the diet products EXCEPT for the vitamins which they NOW tell me were "optional" and won't refund it. Meanwhile, I was NOT told they were optional when I started the study.. I was told it was part of the program, and now I'm stuck paying $35 for something I barely even used and DIDN'T NEED! And to be honest, if I didn't call them, I don't think they would have even refunded my money like they were supposed to at all. IF YOU DIDN'T GET REFUNDED, CALL THEM AND GET YOUR MONEY BACK! I am still so mad about this. Wasted time, wasted money on shipping and handling, and wasted $120 on numerous doctors visits! BEWARE OF SCAM!!

Case study smells like a scam. I signed up in May of 2006 and finished in July of 2006. Sent in all paperwork and have not heard or recieved a thing. Called customer support today Oct 11th and after waiting for about a half hour, my call was finally answered. The guy said he had no idea why I had not been paid and he would check on it but that I would have to call back on Friday. I am surprised he did not offer to call me back... another bad sign. I will call on Friday and I will post results here.

I did the one a day diet. Yes, it works but here's the scoop on the $1,000 it is a hoax and I did everything correct and they tried to tell me the doctor never signed anything (which she did), the pictures were too far,(which they weren't) and I mailed it back too late(which I did not).
So for all of you out there hoping to get paid think again! You will loose some wieght but you will not receive the money. I am wrighting a letter to there corporate office today!!

I did not get to call the office today... I will try to make good on Monday.

Hey all! Well I was a little leary on calling them about my final submission, but I finally did it a couple of weeks ago after not hearing anything back from them. The lady on the line told me that the reasons that I did not get paid was because 1.) My first visit was done by a nurse which it was required to be done by a doctor (this was my fault that I did not catch this in the letter because my doctor and the nurse both weighed me, but on the letter they only put nurse). And 2.) I mailed my package in too late. I could have sworn it said within 15 business days of your last weigh in, but evidently she said it was just 15 days. So those are the reasons that I am not getting paid the $1000. I am not getting any refunds for my deposit either because supposedly I didn't complete the diet within their guidelines when I sent it in late and what not. So I try to go on their website to look at the FAQ's on how many days I had to send in the final submission and what do you know? The website is shut down or temporarily unavailable.

Finally got my check today!!!!!!!!! Woo Hoo!! I am so taken back by all of you that have not gotten anywhere with customer support or their money. Since Day One...I have always gotten through to Customer Support right away. I sent my documents in the middle of August. Never heard anything. I called them on Friday. She apologized for the delay and I received my check today!! I love the One Day Diet! They did right by me!! I have and will continue referring people to them. My boss' wife just started it and has lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks :)

Oh...and btw...the reason the website is down is because they have reached their final quota for the study so the page is no longer needed.

Called again this morning and after verifying the spelling of my name, the girl said I would be processed in the next 15 days. I hope processed means that I get paid. I will write back if I ever get paid.

I participated in the one day diet study in mailed in my final paper work about two months ago and I have not received a response or a check for $1000 and the refund for the product. Can anyone help me out here?

I enrolled in mid-April.

Worked my a** off, submitted all my paperwork, called back 8 weeks after not hearing a peep and they told me I'm SOL as they had already reached the 1K paid people.

I was FURIOUS as I failed to notice that being mentioned on "Line 19" of the terms....Line 19????I was so stoked to begin the diet, I'm lucky I read anything.

I feel they mis-lead me in that respect. I should have been told up front that there were 9999 other people vying for that $1K.

Certainly not something you wedge into "line 19" oh by the way...

Here's the kicker, according to the BBB website the study was completed on 3/31/06??

Why was I then allowed to enroll in April???

Then - they only have 498 people listed on their 'completed' list...where are the other 502???

This will not die easily with me.

Thanks for this BLOG!!!

Chandra - sounds you got shafted like I did...call them, but I bet you anything you did not get under the 1K mark just like me.

Dawn - good for you...they actually received my final submission in 8/16....yet I was not chosen!! go figure.

you know what I find really asinine...there are at least 30 people who lost 0-9 lbs....what the??? I skip drinking water for one day and could loose 2 lbs?!?!?!?!

that's just crap right there. 0 lbs...are you kidding me? and they got paid for it!!!

as an added bonus they haven't paid me back for the product yet either...cust. server, Dawn ID$#178 said...hmmm, they must have missed you...well no kidding. how convenient.

I just enrolled last week and started this week. My information does say that I can have fruits and vegetables, not just fruit. It doesn't mention anything about going to a Dr during the program or writing a daily journal, just includes two questionares to be filled out after completion.

Just a note: I heard an advertisement for this 'study' on the radio today (just less than an hour ago, actually).

It would seem to me that, if they're no longer paying the $1,000.00 to participants, that they would stop running the advertisement (or, in this case, beginning new advertising campaigns) stating that they are still doing such.

One day diet is a total scam! If you call the order phone number advertised on the radio they tell you that you get $1000 just for completing the diet. I spoke to Hilda and a supervisor. Then, when you call the 800-344-1805 customer service line, they tell you that you only get the money if you win the contest.

ALL WHO WERE SCAMMED I HEAR YOU: I agreed to participate in the One Day Diet offer I heard advertised on the radio - with the promised prize of winning $1000 for weight lost.

The Ad says: One Day Diet is a Fast and Easy Diet Plan that Anyone Can Do! (Kids Too!) No Deprivation No Drugs of any kind No Calorie-Counting No Recipes No Weigh-Ins No Hunger No Cheating No Guilt

However, 2 months have passed and I did not receive the $1,000 so I decided to call the company, spoke to a representative named CAROL and she said I was disqualified since according to some papers they sent me, it said: on off-diet days, I needed to eat in moderation. But, on the radio announcement and website I heard there would be a $1000 prize for weight loss (regardless of how I ate during my off diet days.) They said they disqualified me for my letter that I sent in when I was finished with the program becuz in my letter i sed i was glad i cud eat chocolates etc.. on my off diet days, this is my letter: “I have been doing the One-A-Day weight loss program for the $1000. I have done all my six weigh ins and I lost a total of 5lbs. I am happy that I managed to lose 5lbs and keep the weight off.

I do like the program because on my off diet days, I ate like a pig; all the chocolates, donuts, and ice creams that I love and did not gain weight from it.

I would like to thank you for the program offer of being able to lose weight and get paid for it; as I look forward to receiving my $1000. Thank you and it was a pleasure doing business with you.”

NOT TO MENTION, THEY SED MY PAPER WORK WAS LATE AND IT WAS NOT. They will not pay me the $1000 or reimburse me for my $300 that I have invested in the product (and they told me I would get my money back). Not to mention, they said I would get a free gift certificate from walmart and Gas for $25 and I have been calling and asking them for that 4 times now and they still have not given me those gift certificates (stating that they sent them out over and over again). This has been going on since June. When I asked to speak to a manager, they hung up on me.

Along with others who have gotten scammed. I wrote help me Howard because I dont have money to get a lawyer. I can only pray that justice WILL PREVAIL

I wrote in about 2 weeks ago about not being paid on this program and how they said they were going to process me. Well, today I got a check for $219. I am happy to at least have gotten some money back though there was no accounting of the check. I imagine it is in the ballpark of what I paid for their supplements. The check also says "settlement" on it. I would think that this "company" is crooked as could be and that they would be liable to a lawsuit. Any lawyers out there? I will happily join a suit against them.

I started my one-day diet back in May/June of this year. I lost a total of 20 lbs. I probably could have lost more, but I got a little lazy toward the end. I sent in all my paperwork. I waited about a month, and then called customer service. I was told that they reached their 1000 mark, but that I would still receive reimburstment for my product. I received a check for $219.00 a couple of days ago.

I am happy, at least I receive something back for my effort. I lost weight, and I am real real Happy about that. I would recommend this product to anyone, it does work if you stick with it. I have lost 4 more lbs since and I only go on the diet a week or two now and then to keep myself in check.

I recommend that you call customer service 1-800-344-1805 if you haven't heard anything. They had to send for my paperwork, and asked me to call back in 2 or 3 business days and they had all my information. I received the check a week or two later.

I think maybe their advertising could have been a little more explainatory, but I believe this is a good product, it works, I lost 20 lbs, and I got most of my money back for participating. What more can you ask for? If you go into this study thinking, WOW I am going to get $1000 bucks for participating, then you deserve to feel Scammed. But If you are like me, looking to loose weight, hopeing to at least get re-imbursted for your product, and dreaming it would be nice to get $1000 buck but not expecting too, then you will be happy like me.

I look and feel great, I lost 20 lbs, my colestoral went down, my dr is happy. My husband is really happy but most of all I feel better about myself and I don't feel like a failure anymore. Good luck to all of you who try this diet. It will work if you work hard.

You Have The Power:

My name is Steven and I am a nutrition Doctor. I heard about this diet from my sister. However, besides the money or benefits one thinks it has to offer, THIS PRODUCT IS MISLEADING AND UNHEALTHY: it is an unhealthy program because your body is not consuming the correct amount of carbs, fruits, vegetables, or dairy products it needs in a day. Losing weight is not easy, but everyone is entitled to eat what they want as long as they stay within the range of 1600 to 2000 calories a day (not counting athletes).

Once you come off this diet, you will gain back your weight and may even gain a few more pounds. Healthy living is a choice/lifestyle and not a quick fix. Anyone can lose weight from eating fruits one day and going back regular the next (without the help of this product), but how long can one do that? Also, this has dramatic side effects, without the proper intake of vitamins the body gathers from the food pyramid, it can result in heart failure, dizziness, vomiting, liver failure, irregular menstrual cycle, and many other sicknesses. I wish you all the best with your lives, but please understand, you have the power and not a product. God Bless.

I did the One Day Diet Study and did get paid the $1000. THey told me that they hit the 1000 participants mark right when I submitted my info and because of that they would not give me the product reimbursement. After time lost working, paying for doctors visits and cost of product I was paid roughly $400 by them and lost 25 pounds. So not a total loss.

Overall I think there are better diets out there and always exercise.

Good luck to all out there.

I too have been waiting since the end of August for some kind of response to my final submission. I tried calling about a month ago to check into it and the customer service number referred me to the website. I then emailed and recieved no response. I checked again today and now the website is no longer up. I will try calling the customer service number again in hopes to at least get reimbursed for the product costs.

This diet was not for me. It is not realistic to skip a day of eating in my lifestyle- so for that reason alone it became more stressful than anything.

I agree- eat less, exercise more, and drink water and you could easily get the same if not better results without the headache.

This diet changed my life...on 2/13/2006 I weighed 251 pounds. I weighed myself this morning 12/28/2006 and weighed 151. I HAVE LOST 100 POUNDS IN LESS THAN 1 YEAR!!! To me that is truly amazing. I have lost a whole person!!!! I still have 16 pounds to go to be at my goal but I know it is absolutely achievable on this diet!!!

I posted way back on page 1. I got my $1000 back in the spring of 06. I dropped 20 pounds in the study 146 to 126 and finished at 118. I have put 10 pounds back on. I have been holding at 128 for 6 months. I eat any thing from squash to pizza and icecream. If I eat heavy one day I cut back the next and make sure I get those veggies in.
Steve, I am studding nutrition. If people would eat half of the veggies I do the u.s. wouldn't have the weight problems it has. By eatting on the 1 day I eat for high nutrition. Some of these habits have stuck with me.
My biggest problem with the 1 day diet is that I love to chat about what is going on in my fat life. I chat on sparks but I wish 1 day had a forum of their own. I would love to do the 1 day again but I just got bored. I wish I had a few buddies to chat with. I did find someone on sparks when I did the study its self. We started within a week of each other.
Does anyone know of a forum that supports the 1 day. I have heard enough of how only morons would try this diet. It worked for me. It's hard enough trying to think of what you should eat and keeping things straight, I don't need someone telling me about moderation. On the 1 day I was more conserned with reading lables and reading about all the junk they sneak into food. All the different spellings for the world sugar. I wasn't bothered when people looked at me strange when I said I didn't need some high fat dressing to put all over my plate of healthy veggies.
If any one want to chat 1 day, let me know of a site. Stacy I am so excited for you. I wish I was sitting next to you- with my legs crossed. Legs crossed is not a big thing for a thin person but for this former fatty it is.

I have just signed up for the one day diet program. Today is my first day, but already, I am upset with the company. For one thing, I can't get in contact with anyone. On my invoice, I was supposed to have received a motivational CD. I did not. I was given a website for a free ebook download (paidparticipants.com), it has nothing about a free download, therefore, I feel that I have just been a part of a scam. Can anyone help me with this? I have tried for two days to do the diet, and it's hard. Both days, I ate something I should not have. There really are not any instructions, so can you eat any kind of fruit/veg on the diet days, such as plums, prunes, bananas (which are all types of fruits usually forbidden). Also, the veggies, can you steam them or must they be raw? Anyone know how to contact the company? I keep getting a recording and an email address that the messages come back.

Hi all,

This is my third day, and I just can't make it all the way. Evenings are the worst, and it seems that I'm hungier than I have ever been. I don't know if it is a mental thing or what. Like many of you, I am not concerned about the grand. I have not even taken pictures, and actually, I don't want my picture publicized on the Internet. I just want to lose 20 pounds that I have not been able to get off since my knee surgery. Also, I can't get any support from these people. I can't get in contact with them. I've tried the email ps@pfl24.com and called 1-800-410-0340 - I get the same message that I always do about their office hours, etc. I ordered a 2 month's supply, and I did not receive a CD, even though it was on the invoice. If someone who is on this diet and would not mind being a "buddy" with me during this diet please email at rushingd@hssd.net Thanks

I was a participant in the One Day Diet which is done through Products For Life, Inc. I feel that the plan is poorly administrated so as to cause failure and be disqualified from the $1000.00. After going a few rounds with them I did file with the BBB, at which time I received my reimbursement for the supplements only. I am consulting and attorney regarding my options. Question - enough people for a class action lawsuit?
