One Day Diet: Scams and Science

A one day diet is an extreme way of 'zig-zagging' food intake. Rather than small variations, every other day is essentially a fast. This style of eating may not be particularly sustainable or sociable - however it does have a small following.

Unfortunately there is at least one company that has been quick to fraudulently capitalize on the idea.

The Scam
This company (operating under a number of names) has run radio advertisements offering to pay $1000 for a 'diet study'. Just that claim alone is enough to put most people off. A quick examination of the site showed that the so-called 'survey' you must undertake was not even recording any data - it was all a trick. You can fill out the forms - but they were not even submitted back to the web site!

Then comes the Better Business Bureau report:

One Day Diet/Products for Life/DietStudy.com is looking for participants in, what they claim, is a weight-loss study. When a BBB rep, posing as a potential customer, called the company, she was told that the typical weight loss was 20-30 pounds in 90 days. The “One Day Diet” consists of weight-loss tablets, supplements and dieting every other day. There is a $150 “deposit” for the first month and $75 per month charge for the following months. At the end of the 3-month “study,” the money is supposed to be refunded, and $1,000 is supposed to be paid to the participant. The BBB rep was also told that the company is a BBB member. Not true! 118 complaints have been filed against this Wisconsin company, and they have the Bureau’s lowest rating.
One Diet-Blog reader reported following the diet and losing 16 pounds. She explained the diet as this:"Every other day is actually a semi-fast, during which you may eat unlimited raw fruits and veggies. On opposite days, you may eat what you wish."

I suggest you avoid the so-called diet study - and save your money.

UPDATE (May 2007): We have received the following response from Julie Hawkins of Products for Life:

"We are not a Wisconsin company. When we began our study we hired an outside phone room to take the calls. We had a couple rogue sales reps that really gave misinfo. We do not claim any weight loss expectation at all and we were not members of the BBB. It is unfortunate that misinfo was given, but not fair to focus on this. We terminated the relationship with the phone room and all info given to the consumer by any phone room we use has to follow a specific script and cannot deviate from it. We have since implemented safeguards and training so that call centers adhere to the correct information."

The Science of Eating Every Other Day
John Daugirdas has developed his own diet - "The QOD Diet" - based on the principles of fasting every other day. It's obvious that Daugirdas has spent considerable time researching out the science behind the concept.

The alternate days of fasting (or near-fasting) deplete glycogen stores - however Daugirdas recommends taking in high-quality protein during the off days to prevent any lean mass (muscle) depletion.

Our long-term energy storage bank is fat, and short-term debit account is glycogen. If you eat constantly, your glycogen stores are full up. So you are always then vulnerable to weight gain, even if your caloric intake is not very high. Any transient excess of food now can no longer go to glycogen - so it goes to fat. This is NOT balanced off by short term periods of fasting, since your body simply draws down on your glycogen stores, and has no need to go to your fat stores.
Daugirdas' QOD diet (QOD is Latin for "every other day"), is obviously not a fad diet book written for mass market profits. It's an experimental work based on methods that may have some merit.

However - in this age of eating disorders - and the multitude of psychological issues that surround eating - I would not recommend fasting for weight loss. Young women (in particular) do not need their meal-skipping habits validated. Also if you have any kind of blood glucose sensitivity - severe energy depletion on the off days can play havoc with energy levels (not to mention the irritability).

To quell additional fears...

To everyone who asked...NO...I do NOT work for this company. What I am is one person who has tried EVERYTHING and for the first time EVER, has found something that works, that makes me feel good, and that doesn't stop working for no reason like other diets.

To those who backed me up, thank you.

To those who are skeptical about me because I know so much about this study, my big question for you is WHY DON'T YOU KNOW THIS MUCH ABOUT THE STUDY? I took TWO months researching the One Day Diet before I even called the number. I never go into anything blind.

As for the tips I've given...well you can take them or not. The people at the company even say to everyone who starts the diet that if you're just in it for the $1,000 you probably won't succeed. Everyone is different and following the study step for step is NOT going to work for everyone like it has worked for me.

To be perfectly honest, I'm just graduating from college. I have $10,000 in student loans to pay off, so of course I could use the money. But this is really supposed to be about helping people not about getting money for sticking with something for 3 months. I'd actually prefer it if they told everyone that you can't have the money unless you keep the weight off for at least 3 months after the end of your study cycle. Then they'll really be finding people who are dedicated to losing weight.

I have genetically high blood pressure and genetically high cholesterol...I've been told that at 20 years of age I have the physical characteristics of a 40 year old man who has eaten eggs and bacon three meals a day and smoked a pack a day for the past twenty years. I don't smoke and I don't eat eggs and I don't eat bacon. I don't eat greasy foods. I have always watched what I eat and have NEVER been able to lose weight. So to those who are skeptical about me, let me tell you, I was soooooo skeptical about this program because NOTHING ever worked for me. I was always sick. I was always tired. I was always FAT. I will not apologize for being passionate about this program or for studying it in depth...because I know those two things are a good part of what has made me successful in this program. I never expected this to work for me and once it started I just wanted to tell the whole world about it and to tell everyone that maybe they should give it a try.

The Food Tablets have been brought up several times in the thread so I wanted to tell everyone that in the materials (and your representative should also have told you this) it says you're not required to eat those tablets. The tablets are there to help you curb your appetite. I have NEVER eaten 10 in a day and they really don't expect me to be able to. I've read a lot of information about these kinds of tablets...what they do is expand to the current size of your stomach making you feel full. They also have a lot of nutrients and vitamins in them so that you are not losing anything. My doctor has gone through the entire list of ingredients on EVERYTHING with me and he has approved my using this diet. His only suggestion was that I be careful when choosing the foods I eat when I take the Sun Crystals and right after I take my multivitamin (which, btw, you are NOT required to take 6 in a day...sometimes that's just waaaaaay too much) since some foods will boost me FAR ABOVE my daily value for some of the vitamins listed and while that's not necessarily terrible for you, it can make you kind of woozy or lightheaded depending on the particular vitamin. I did a number on myself just this morning with Beta Carotene.

Also, about the Better Business Bureau thing...I've checked into that myself. There were only 8 complaints lodged in the 3 year reporting period for the BBB and the BBB says that ALL of those complaints were resolved. That's pretty good and not just considering the type of business they're in. That's pretty good for any business. If you want to check out what the BBB actually had to say go to this url: http://www.data.bbb.org/reno2.asp. If that doesn't work for you, I suggest going to www.bbb.org, and then doing a search for the business. I found them under the search term: Real Life Weight Loss Study.

Well, no matter what, good luck to everyone who's giving it a try. I'll let everyone know how my weight loss is going and whether I get my $1,000...of course, I am keeping it in mind that if I don't it will be due to a misstep that I make, not them. I have been told that so far all of my paperwork and study information is perfectly in order. I hope everything works out for you all. And hey, remember that this is about creating a better, healthier you. Sure there's other ways to go about it, ways that might be cheaper or whatever, but if this is working for you then more power to you.

Super congrats to Jean, Chris, Dawn, and everyone else on the thread who has also lost weight!!! Raise an apple and a bottle of water to healthier living and smaller waist!!!

I'm not so sure this is entirely truthful. I'm a size 20 and would have to lose at least 75+ lbs to go down to a size 11/12. When you're a size 20, losing 15 lbs may take you down 1 size but not 8.

Midwest Gal. If you decide to not use the wafers and eat the fruit alone...it is not the same. THerea re ingredients in the wafers that are meant to maintaqin your blood glucose level so you don't get the side effects of starvation. If your blood glucose gets too low, it causes your body to go into "store" mode which means your body uses muscles instead of fat for energy. Also, it can cause memory issues and just plain make you tired. So...don't starve yourself please! :-)

As for me...I ordered the program and joined the study two weeks ago. I called them yesterday because I still have not seen my stuff and I'm anxious to start the program. They NEVER HEARD OF ME. Yep, I spent 20 minutes on the phone with them and they lost all my data. So, instead, I ordered the program on Ebay for 1/2 the price. I'll let you know how it foes! I've got 20 pounds to lose and can't wait to start.

Grad, I think you have an awesome attitude and dont let anyone discourage you. You are doing GREAT! Optimissism will allow all of us to succeed, and there is no room for pestissism. Lets all keep up the great work and maybe we can meet each other when we create the promos for them. We WILL be there "poster children" ;-))

Good luck to all!

Resolute, you are right...that makes sense too. Fruit all day wouldn't be giving me any fat (and that just makes me dizzy) or any of the nutrients that the wafers have. I just started day 1 today...so far I've had 3 wafers and a peach, and to be honest, I don't feel hungry or sick or tired. And that feels encouraging. I am a little concerned about how I will feel by dinner time, cuz that's when I usually need to eat. I think I will save most of my fruit for dinner. I bought lots of melon, apples, pears. Stuff that will be filling without too many calories.

Grad, I completely agree with all you've said, and I just started the diet today. I've been very thorough so far, been approved by my doctor, found all the same information on the BBB when I looked up "Products for Life" (aka, Real Life Weight Loss). I'm completing all my registration paperwork tonight and mailing it in tomorrow via certified mail. Keep up the good work. I'm willing to give this a try, and I hope this works for me as well as it's worked for you. Even if I don't get $1000, losing a significant amount of weight and improving the quality of my life will be priceless to me!

Hey, one more question...does anyone have a recommendation of how many calories you should eat on your "off" days? I'm so used to counting and measuring things and knowing that I should diet on 1400 - 1700 calories a day, that I'm not sure what a "normal" eating day should be for me. What have other people done? Obviously you can't and don't want to binge...this whole thing is based on calorie reduction, so we don't want to be making up all the lost calories on the non-diet days! Any suggestions?

Hey All!

I have started the one day diet just this week and i feel great. I agree with many people on this site that ya there may be a lot of loopholes for us not to get paid the $1000 but if i can lose the weight thats been ruining my life i'll still gladly do this program. It seems to be working for me so far, i feel great, and i feel better about myself internally. Hope everyone does well with this product!

Thank you all for your comments. My husband and I went to the website and called the number then decided to do some research before paying any money. We've decided not to do it--too many shady aspects for me. We may just try to do it on our own.
Thanks again!

I called and signed up for this diet March 24 and got my vanilla wafers, sun crystals, and multivitamins within just a couple days. I started the diet the very next day after receiving the package, but after reading all the literature, I realized right away that I would not be eligible for the $1,000, because there's no way I was going to buy a 2-pc swimsuit and photograph myself in it to their specifications and (as an uninsured person) pay a doc-in-the-box a bunch of money for several visits, etc. Besides that, all of this preliminary stuff had to be completed within 10 days of receiving the shipment.

After my second diet day, I woke up at 2:00 a.m. afraid that maybe I'd made a big mistake with these fiber tabs . . . But after another food day and another diet day, I didn't have any more distress below. I noticed that no one had mentioned anything about that. I bet that's what they're talking about "your body getting used to the diet" on the motivational CD.

I, too, was annoyed about the other memberships which I had to cancel, but I cancelled those right away, got confirmation numbers, and have had no problems with my credit card from it.

Anyway, I started thinking, why do I want to drop $300 for these products which may or may not work for me if I could maybe find them cheaper on eBay? BINGO.

I cancelled the auto-ship, got a confirmation, and have had no further debits (or any other communications) from the company since then.

I just ordered my second batch of shapelettes (this time Chocolate) and suncaps from someone on eBay Friday. They arrived Monday, all sealed and looking exactly the same as the ones I received from the study, only it was SO much cheaper. They sent me the whole kit (all 3 bottles) for less than the price of one bottle and didn't even charge me for shipping. They even threw in a little cell phone antenna (which I'll never use, but a nice little bonus, nonetheless).

I'm enjoying the diet okay now and losing weight when I'm sensible about exercising and eating days, so we'll see how it ends up. If I lose at least 20 lbs, I'll post again.

BTW, sounds to me like that lady that got the rash from the Suncaps may be sensitive (or allergic) to Niacin, the first ingredient. Many people get a very uncomfortable flushing sensation (like a sunburn) from Niacin. My mother is one of those people, and I can tell you she really suffered when her doctor put her on it! She and other people told me that their doctors said that that's only a temporary thing with niacin, that that side effect will subside, but I don't know anyone who has been able to tolerate it long enough to find out. Luckily, niacin doesn't seem to bother me.

Hey all! Been on the diet for a week now. Weigh in by the nurse is tomorrow morning. I think I'm down at least 4 lbs., but I need to weigh on the same scale (doctor's) to be sure. I had a couple questions about the program, so I called the 800 # yesterday. Only waited about 3 minutes to talk to someone, and he was very friendly, gave me his name and employee # (offered it up to me...I didn't ask for any of it), and answered my questions very efficiently. Seemed legit to me, but who knows. As far as I know, I've done everything to the T, so I'm still qualified. 83 days to go....we'll see what happens!

Karen

I was confused on the weigh in days so I sent an e-mail to the customer service and they told me that you don't have to weigh in 6 times, that you only have to weigh-in twice.. The first time and 89 days later.. with the Doctor. Thought I would pass this information along.

I started the diet and I am so nervous that I didn't do something correct with the registration. I know you have to follow everything to a T to get the $1,000 and I think I did, but I am still just anxious about knowing if I am in the study or not. For example: are my pictures good enough? I measured my own waist, will they know that the doctor didn't measure it? Yikes! Regardless, I will lose weight...but the money would definitely be a motivator. Anyone else having this anxiety?

Karen, I scheduled the 4 "in-between" weigh ins with my doctors office. It will just be with the nurse and will not cost anything. This will be another motivator for me and will assure that I am following the guidelines.

Hi, I have been in the study for more than 2 weeks now and have noticed a difference. I feel lighter and healthy. The $1000 dollars is a definite incentive. I am hoping to drop 30 lbs. I feel somewhatlike a labratory rat, tested with uncertain outcome. I get hungry around 5 pm which requires a certain amount of discipline. If this is a scam, I hope to expose it and shut these guys down. Otherwise, it is a cool lifestyle change with the hopes of producing a leaner healthier outcome. The doctor has reviewed the contents and supports me with the diet. He said to try it and see how you feel. It is somewhat a fast ever other day yet you are rewarded the other days to enjoy your meals in moderation. I have read the comments, but will continue on with the program to lose weight and perhaps be $1000. richer. The customer service is slow and it was a long wait. Though there is much critizism, are there completed success stories? Did someone actual get paid the grand? There seems to be a lot of loop holes in the contract that can wash you out. My wife also sign up using a different address which helps with our eating habits. Good luck to those on it and I seek truth and honesty in pursuit of losing weight. You need to be determine to lose weight and stay with it.
I will keep you posted on my journey.

I lost 60 pounds in 5 months WITHOUT this diet. Look at what you are really doing: Reducing your caloric intake, being careful about what you eat, and exercising regularly. These three things are what is taking off the weight, not this so-called miracle diet. Anyone who does these three things will lose weight. ANYONE! There is no such thing as an overweight person that only eats 1000 calories a day, unless they spend 24 hours a day on the couch, and even then I don't think it's possible. I know. I've been there. It's just simple math. Burn more calories than you eat, and you will lose weight. Stop eating so much, eat healthy, don't cheat, and get exercise, and you'll lose weight. Quit looking for the easy way out, because there is none. The Subway diet works just as well as this one, and it's a lot cheaper! Sorry if I sound a little harsh, but I've been heavy for all of my life, and have been making excuses for it almost as long, so I know where I am coming from. I had myself completely convinced that I was eating like a bird without being able to lose weight, but I was only fooling myself. It's harder to take it off than to put it on, but when you really want to, you can do it! Be honest with yourself and add up every calorie that you consume, every day for a week, WITHOUT changing ANY of your eating habits during that period. You can then begin to cut out the highest calorie foods (mostly carbs from desserts, junkfood, fast foods, refined sugar, and white breads), to reduce your intake. As for exercise, just use common sense. You don't have to go to the gym for an hour each day. Just adjust your daily life. Don't circle the parking lot at the mall, looking for the closest space. Park farther away and walk! If you need to take something upstair or out to the garage, make several trips instead of trying to carry everything at once! Don't use food as a crutch! If you're depressed, or lonely, or sad, don't use food as a reward, because you are trading short term enjoyment for long term happiness. I just hate to see so many people willing to pay for what they can get for free. I now eat less, get more exercise, and am losing a little more every day. The other benefits include lower cholersterol, stronger muscles, and more stamina. My doctor says that I have literally added YEARS to my life. Pumping your body full of chemicals and stimulants can only have an adverse effect on your body. The most important thing to remember is that you need a lifestyle change, not a diet, or gastric-bypass surgery. Why do you think so many people lose weight, then gain it all back? Because they do what is right until they lose weight, then they go back to their old high-calorie ways, and put it all back on! WAKE UP! By the way, I found this site because a co-worker told me about the fabulous new diet she was going to try (this one), and I wanted to see what she was talking about.

I too started the One Day Diet. What amazed me is that I was LIED to by the tela sales person. She told me I would get back what I invested after the study...LIE number one! Never was there any mention of having to spend money on a doctor's visit. And I cancelled the study right away and despite that, you got it, I was ripped off for another package of this stuff. Hmmm...scam, is right on target! No phone contact person, no address, they are really hiding in the shadows. Now I have to cancel my Debit Card that is being fraudulently charged for product I do not want.

I did try the Shape-Lettes...like, $210 out of pocket, yea I will give it a shot. They taste great and do satisfy the appetite. The Sun Crystals did not seem to do much. The whole concept is probably not that bad of an idea, and what motivated me was not haveing to deal with food on the diet days. That is a plus. It is their marketing that reaks. I will be in Oshkosh Wisconsin on Thursday, will have to see if I can find Wisconsin Ave.

Too bad marketing companies have to lie to people to get their business. If they were to be honest and tell people you name basically goes in a lottery hat to get paid $1,000 if you are chosen. All the hard work for a perhaps chance to come out a winner of $1000 plus all your money back (like that is going to happen)! Why not cut the bull and just promote a product that could help a person to lose weight instead of hyping people in with a bunch of lies and false promotions? Telesales people are not paid unles a sale is made...and if they were to be totally honest with folks, NO sales would likely be made. So the telasales girl I spoke with either outright lied to get the sale or was gravely missinformed about the program. I would not have given this a shot had I know all the facts up front. But if it would have been promoted honestly as a way to lose weight, and forget all the hype and b.s., I would likely have ordered.

People overweight are desperate and have tried many things. We are an easy target to a scam! Pretty sad.

Pam,

We in the call center only relay to you the information which we are told. We are getting new information daily. There is also the problem of undertrained agents, which it seems like you had one of them. I am one of the few compleatley honest agents there. Sure, my numbers aren't that great, but I sure can sleep better knowing that I didn't force any of you great people into doing something you either can't do or can't AFFORD to do. There are some really rude agents who will guilt you into buying, and I really can't stand it.

Jerry,

I definatly agree with you about all of what you said. This diet is just a simplified calorie counting diet, with the counting removed. I think the only thing that makes people stick to this is because they have the bribe of the $1000 at the end. Again, is this $1000 real? I do not know. When one of you finishes and gets the money, please let me know, because I would love to know how much of what we've been told is true.

Good luck all!

I started this diet on the 19th April and have lost about 8 lbs in total. I really like this diet as I can actually eat something that I like every other day. The 1 wk of diet was amazing, I lost like 2 -2.5 lbs every diet day but did gain back 1-1.5 lbs during my free day. I am not sure if that is because the food that I eat. I called and the customer service lady said I am free to eat anything during my free day, but I notice it doesn't works that well on me. I can gain very easy if I eat a little more, I will only maintain or lost a little on my free day only when I eat my meals in a smaller portion and done eating my last meal early in a day.
My weigh has been bounding up and down in the last couple weeks, i should have lost more than that, but I did get lazy recently. I haven't been doing much exercise and have joined a few birthday parties during the past few weeks.
I need to lost another 15 lbs this month by 23 May. It is because I want to look better on my graduation day and I promise my husband that I am going to succeed. 15 lbs does looks a lot to me, but I guess if I could stick with this diet, eat carefully on my free day, and do exercise, 15 lbs should be possible to achieve.
For the 1000 dollars, I called and asked the people who work for this company before, they said I will get paid no matter what result I get at the end of 3 months. They never told me about the 1000 first participants. But either I get pay or not, I think I will still keep using this diet plan. My main goal is to lost weight and money is just a side benefit to me.
Lastly, I went to my doctor today and have him weigh me.The doctor suggested me to do blood test at the beginning of the diet because he thoughts it is too good to be truth that people will pay 1000 dollars for doing their diet study. He thought it might have some kind of side effects with this diet and recommended me to do all the testing, make sure this diet is not harmful to my body.
I didn't do the blood test because I don't have much money to do all that. So I just move on and have my doctor weigh me on the 8th, 16th, and the end of the month(which is today). He checked my blood pressure and it is normal. He said this diet seems to be fine to me as most of the other diets will cause dieters change their blood pressure.
Anyway, I am glad with my result and hopefully I can get my weight down 15 lbs by my graduation day. Good luck with you all.

Hi all! I just had my 15th day weigh in at the doc's office, and I am down 6 lbs in two weeks. I feel really good about that. Jerry, you did sound kinda harsh, but I completely understand where you are coming from. I've struggled with my weight all my life...lost, gained, lost again, etc. I know it's a life style change. My biggest discouragement this time around is that I don't want to have to count, measure or weigh anything anymore. I know how to eat healthy, I just have to do it. But having those "diet" days keeps me on a straight path, and always looking forward to my off-diet day. I'm so excited to see my results at the end of the week, that I find myself wanting to eat healthier on the off days, though I can have a little bit of the foods I really want. So if I can just spend the next 3 months changing my habits and dropping a good portion of weight, then maybe I can learn to keep it off and stay in shape without taking supplements. My goal right now is to drop at least 30 lbs while doing the "study", and then probably cancel my orders of the wafers. I'm just planning to use this as a motivation, a kick-start if you will, to what I plan to be a lifestyle change. If I get paid the $1000, then great. By the way, I did see on the online support study website that you would not have been allowed to enroll if they had already gotten 1000 people in the study. Also, I emailed customer support (in addition to calling last time). They responded very quickly with an answer to my question, and assured me that there was no problem with the way I was doing the study so far. Scam? Maybe. Time will tell. I'll let you all know how it goes!

Later!

Hi Everyone trying the One Day Diet, I stated the diet April 7 and have lost 20 lb as of today May 25th. I have found this plan easy to follow. I didn't op to join the study, found there were to many loop wholes to drop you from the study. I'm interested in anyone who has bought the Vanilla Waffers and dropped from the program and would like to sell any closed container. I would be interested. You can reach me by calling 206- 973-4500 work number in Seattle Washington at the Fire Department Monday - Friday 8:30 - 5:00... thanks Virgina

I started the One Day Diet on 5/13th. It has now been just about 2 weeks and I have lost a total of 10 pounds. I am not having any problems on my "diet days". Somedays can be rough, but for the most part, it is great! I never thought I would be able to have this much willpower. But this is actually really easy for me. I have tried so many different diets and this one actually works for me because I know that on my food days, I don't have to worry about carb or calorie counting too much. My diet days have begun to train my stomach not to want to eat so much anyway. I am very glad I found this study. I go for my 15 day weigh in tomorrow :)

I sent for the One-Day-Diet also. Paid $150 and was told by my Dr. that I shouldn't use this diet because of pre-existing medical conditions. I sent the package back without opening any of the bottles. The package was delivered to their office in Oshkosh, Wi. on March 6, 2006 and signed for by a person with the name of M. Zelke. Almost 3 months later, I am still waiting for the credit to appear on my credit card statement. My credit card company is getting involved soon. Anyone else having the same problem? Let me know, maybe we will have a suit against the company for fraud or thievery. debdelgado@juno.com

I heard the ad on the radio this evening and thought about calling. However, the whole $1000 "promise" just made me very skeptical. Wanted to research it a little more first. Glad I found this blog! Don't think I will be joining...I think Jerry is has a very good point. Everything everyone has said all basically boils down to cutting calories and exercise. If I don't have the will power to do it on my own, then forking over hundreds of dollars probably isn't going to make a big difference. Good luck to everyone...those who are participating and those who aren't. God grant us all the willpower to eat healthier and exercise more often.

I tried this without the wafer or suncrystal, eating only fruit yesterday. It was hard, but I made it through. At midnight I ate some pretezels and some leftovers. Today's an anything day, I'm REALLY excited.

Well, today (Thursday) was a diet day...all fruit, no wafers or suncrystals. It was much easier than Tuesday!

24 days on this diet and I have lost a total of 15 lbs and the inches have just melted off! I went to a baby shower on Saturday and everyone could not get over the difference of how I looked from 2 months ago till today. Because of the inches that I have lost, I am able to fit into clothes that I haven't worn in a couple of years. My husband had me by him a month supply from Ebay so he could try it himself. I love it!! I have my 1 month check up with my doctor this friday.

Well, I've been on the diet for just over 3 weeks now, and I'm down about 10 lbs. I'm feeling pretty good. My one month weigh-in at the doctor is this Friday. It's going ok, though I do find the diet days extremely boring. Food is such an enjoyable part of the day! That does make me look forward to the off days. But now here's my current concern...I still have not gotten my auto shipment of my 2nd month diet supplies (nor have I been billed for them)...and my first 30 days is up at the end of this week! I've sent the online study support an email. I'll see if I get a response. If I can't find out why I did not get my shipment, I suppose they will disqualify me from the study for the lapse in my program, but oh well. If that happens, I'll continue the diet since it's working and just cancel everything going forward. We'll see what happens....

Hi Midwest Gal. Don't give up. I had the same problem with the autoship and I called them up today. Last month, I was billed on 5/11 and I recieved the product the very next day. When I called customer support today, they verified that I am scheduled to be billed and shipped on 6/9. The woman also told me that I do not have to eat the full 10 a day. I could eat maybe 5 to stretch them out. I just bought my hubby a one month supply from Ebay, so I will probably just tap into his supply until mine arrives. Good luck!

Itchy

Has anyone shown any side effects such as extreme itching? I went off the suppliments for a few days and the itching seemed to go away, went back on them and the itching is back. Anybody else?

Dawn, thanks for the encouragement. However, I sent an email on 6/6, and got a reply last night that I needed to contact Cust. Service. So I called them this morning. They told me that I was not enrolled in the autoship program!! I told them that was what I had signed up for, but she said I was not. So I asked if they could go ahead and send them, and she said it was too late...so basically that blows my chance with the study! The good thing is I have not been billed anything else, and they said I would not be. I'll still keep an eye on my credit card though. I don't think I'll buy any more of the wafers. I am getting a little tired of them. I do like the pep I get from the Sun Crystals though, so I'll use what I have left. To be honest, I'm really not disappointed about the study. I was doing this to lose weight anyway. I weighed in today and I'm down 12 lbs in 4 weeks, and I've been working out again. I feel good and I'm motivated to keep going, with or without this diet fad and the so-called paid study. I'm even going to keep weighing in at my doctor's office once a month, because he's been really supportive and I want to show him that I can get this weight off once and for all. To everyone, thanks for the encouragement, and if you are still a "qualified" study participant, be sure to check, re-check and check again everything that you do. There are way too many loop holes to get them out of paying you!

I also was very very bad itchy - I'm thinking that it was the Sun Crystals - your not supposed to have caffeine, and I drank some coffee that had caffeine (thought I was drinking de-caf) and I think the mixture of the caffeine and the sun crystals was way too much... I broke out all over my body in a rash - and itched like crazy for hours... this is the only thing that I could think of why it happened.. because I hadn't even eaten anything that morning.. did you drink any caffeine?

I signed up to participate in the One-Day Diet in mid-May with the understanding that it was a complete money back guarantee. I have been dissatisfied with the product and the plan and have continually tried to contact their Customer Service Department. Many times I have tried and failed. No one answers the phone or replies to continued e-mails. I cannot get them to take me off their auto ship program so they continue to send monthly supplies and charge my credit card.

Hello Seleta: What number are you trying to call for customer service? I have called their Weight Loss Support a few times already for questions I had and I never had any trouble getting through. Let me know what number your calling and I can tell you if it is the same number I have.

BTW....it has been 6 weeks and I am down 18 lbs!! My husband has been doing it for 2 weeks and he is down 9 lbs. I am amazed at the success we are having with this :)

I got it! I got it!

I was highly doubtful that I would ever see the promised $1,000 or the reimbursement for what I paid for the diet, but I completed the study at the end of May, and I received my check today!!

Despite my excitement at this news, I still wouldn't recommend this to anyone. I grew really weary of the diet about half way through the 3 months, and the steps required to fulfill all of the listed requirements are MANY. It ended up really being a lot of work.

In the end, I did lose about 20 pounds and 3 full pant sizes, and I got my check for over $1,200. So I guess if you're really committed, it can work. But I warn you, there are A LOT of details and fine print in the materials. Pay attention to EVERYTHING.

I am SO glad to finally be done with this -- and with GREAT results! YAY! =)

Rebecca,

What tips do you have as far as "fine print" wise? I am pretty sure I have done everything up to par, but now you are making me nervous. My study won't be done until the end of July. I would appreciate any tips or information that you could give me.

Rebecca:

Why would you not recommend this to anyone? Payment aside, it is a great way to lose weight and stay healthy. I have been in the study now for 7 weeks now and I have not grown weary of it. If anything, my body is so used to this way of eating that on my foods days, I have no urges to eat so much. A little here and there. I have lost 20 lbs in the last 7 weeks and I still have 5 more weeks to go. To be honest, even after the study, I plan on continuing this way of eating.

I would so much rather have 1 day of fasting than every day of counting carbs, calories, etc. and wishing I could eat the things that I love the most. I wish you luck and I hope everyone else is having great success with this diet.

In response to the concerns over the fine print in the study materials, there were a few reasons I really never thought they'd come through with the money. First off, they say that the quality of your before and after photos must be at least 80% of professional quality. Who's to say what "80%" entails exactly? No matter how many different configurations I tried for these full-body shots, I just couldn't get them in super-sharp focus. And if I hadn't been shooting with digital, I wouldn't have even known they were a little soft. Say the focus isn't great, or the lighting isn't ideal, or you have too much of a shadow. They could just disqualify you for that.

They did state that they were only obligated to pay the first 1,000 participants who successfully complete the study. Who's to say when they've reached their 1,000? And when they do, will they continue to pay, or start denying people.

You have to provide a doctor's letter with your registration materials at the beginning of the study, as well as another doctor's letter at the end. And the letter has to include a lot of very specific detail. So not only does your doctor have to be willing to provide this, but it has to happen in the time frame they've detailed. And say your doctor forgets to list one of your weigh-ins -- will you be disqualified?

Also there are several requirements that are hardly mentioned, or very vaguely described -- most notably, the 2-minute daily recap. There was one little line in the initial materials that referred to this, and I never saw it mentioned again. I asked a representative about it, and was told that they just expect a free-form journal to let them know day-to-day things like any weight loss or gain that you've experienced. That's 90 freaking journal entries, and no matter how short you keep them, that really adds up. Mine was like 17 printed pages long. And I'll bet a lot of people don't even notice that they need to have one.

So as you can see, there are countless ways that they could get out of paying participants. There are just so many details, that it turns into a lot more work than I expected.

And as for the diet, if it's working well for people I am totally happy for them. I've actually had a lot of friends purchase the diet after seeing my results. Unfortunately almost all of them quit after only a few days. Giving up regular food, even for just a day, is amazingly hard for a lot of people. I had a remarkably easy time for about 6 weeks, and then it starting getting to the point where I could hardly bear to make it through the evening of a wafer day.

The two hardest things for me to deal with were the scheduling of the diet with daily life and monthly hormones. They say that you can have two food days in a row if you need to for a special event, but life just isn't always that clear-cut. Say you have a baby shower one day, the next day a barbecue, and the day after that your boss takes you out to lunch. It just seems to go on and on. So some days I ended up just having to tell everyone, "Listen, I'm on this diet where I don't eat any regular food every other day." Because, I'm sorry, when you go to a party and don't eat any of the food, people notice, and questions get asked. It's weird! =b It was especially hard when I went on a week-long family vacation. This diet just isn't necessarily as simple to follow as it might sound.

And it never failed, when I reached a certain time each month, and my hormones went wacko, I just couldn't cope. I wanted to eat like I hadn't eaten in weeks, and I'd get extremely irritable -- way worse than usual. I ended up taking two food days in a row at the same time each month because I absolutely couldn't manage to stick to the diet.

But going way back to the positive points of the diet, I did really have a great amount of weight loss in the first month, and it was a lot easier than I expected. And now that the diet's over, I did gain a few pounds back (3-4), because obviously I went back to eating food every day and it's inevitable to have at least a small bounceback. But I've had no trouble keeping the rest of the weight off. I finished a month ago, and I haven't gotten any bigger. I worried that it would all come right back unless I worked hard at keeping it off, but I'm not doing anything special.

Lastly, though, part of my concern with this diet is some of the possible health hazards. I had a biochemist friend check out the whole diet, and boy did she give me an earful! As with any extreme diet, where you make major nutrition changes, there's the possibility of losing muscle mass instead of fat. Though the wafers have fat, carbs, and protein, they have so little of it, and so few calories (150 per day?), that you're basically starving yourself. In order for your body to continue with its regular processes, it starts to look elsewhere for the nutrition it needs. It will actually break down muscle tissue to feed your regular bodily functions.

So some people argue that you still get to eat a bunch of fruit and vegetables. But a lot of the vitamins that you get from the fruits and vegetables are only fat-soluble. So if you don't have enough fat in your diet, you don't absorb those nutrients, and you basically just eliminate them when you urinate.

She also said that when your body has to go to extreme measures to carry on your basic functions, it stops doing DNA repair, which is essential to preventing cancer and other potentially deadly health problems.

So, personally, I heard what she had to say, and I made the judgement call to take the risk. I figured that if I could lose the weight, it would help me to become more active and, ultimately, have a longterm beneficial effect. But some people might not want to take that chance if they had all the facts.

Sorry this is so long! I've had four months to go through this, live it, and think about it. So there you go. I truly wish you all the best of luck in your endeavors!
