Forget the Salads, It's a Burger Revival
McDonald's is having troubles in Europe (see global decline). In fact, the enormous fast food chain just closed 25 outlets in Britain. British people even voted McDonald's as the most unethical company (out of many other big brands). In the USA however, the picture is very different.
In three years, revenue has increased by an incredible 33 percent. Where is all that money coming from? It certainly isn't the 'healthy' items...
It's the dollar menu. Double cheeseburgers, fried chicken sandwiches, fries, apple pies, sundaes, 16oz soft drinks... each one can be bought for just a dollar. If you spent just $6 - you can buy yourself 2050 calories, including 83g fat, 2580mg sodium, 272g carbohydrates, 54g protein, and, shockingly, 16 grams of trans-fat.
...the average store sells roughly 50 salads a day and 50 to 60 Premium Chicken Sandwiches, compared with 300 to 400 double cheeseburgers from the Dollar Menu.Salad sales appear to be declining - and incredibly - appear to have a smaller profit margin that the double cheeseburgers.
As for the number of visitors - apparently then chain gets some one million more American visitors a day than it did just a year ago. I suspect these million visitors are not there to try a "McDonald's 30 Day Weight Loss Diet" - they're in there for the dollar burger.
At that price it's hard for most people to resist.
so I guess $1 is how much most people are willing to sacrifice their health for. huh... funny; I always thought it would be more.
ReplyIt's actually ironic how little money you need to ruin yourself and how much money(look at diet, gym and home equipment sales and prices), not to mention time and effort, it takes to get even a fraction of your old or new self back.
sad really, not even ironic.
Fokes, Enough is enough. Just because Saturated fat and Cholestrol is not as bad as it seems, it is NOT a license to chow back down on big macs and super size fries. Fries are potatoes, and potato consumption in it's self is plain bad for you. And when you fry these potatos, you get sticks of carcingenic junk that causes free raticals.
Yes, You need some saturated fat. But do NOT go out to McDonalds and fries. Eat organic fruits and vegtables, cut down on breads and grains, eat grass-fed naturally-raised meats as well as some organ meats (Make SURE it's organic) such as bison liver, bison heart, bison kidneys, or bison pancreas.
It's actually somewhat similer to the mediterranian diet, but the red meat is eaten about once or twice a week, while the red meat on the top of the pyramid is replaced with grains, while the cakes, margarine, alcohalic beverage (including red wine), is forbidden.
Please. I would like to take out, but I want to take out oily fish and vegtables, not fried burgers and fries.
Americans are eating too much fried and baked foods and too much bread. It is THESE foods that ruin your health, NOT the grass-fed red and organ meat as the FDA believes. We are also taking in too much Omega 6 fatty acids. GLA Omega 6 is the only good Omega 6 fatty acids that are good for you. And, people should steer clear of these cheap, crap oils on these supermarket shelves and start using organic, pure extra virgin olive and coconut oil. Try replacing beef with bison.
Lastly, be adventurous! Try out unusual fruits and vegtables, such as dragon fruit, dandelion, and such. Go on to the Internet and learn about other fruits and veggies that you've never heard of. Also, try unusual meats, such as rattle snake, dart frogs, caribou, and others. Be sure to make half your meat protein intake in fish (especially oily fish), and some shelfish. It is OK to eat octopus. Though it contains cholestrol, it is good for you. I take out too, but I like to take out fish. Try eating fish for dinner four out of five nights a week. Take fish oil suppliments and a multivitamin a day as well.
ReplyIt costs a LOT less for McD's to make fries, soda, etc., than the salads. The salads are actually made of vegetables, which aren't as cheap as frozen potatoes or hockey puck-like beef patties. It's just sad though that people are willing to buy food that's so bad for them just because "hey, it's only $1!"
ReplyIt looks like British people have more sense than we do.
We are so brainwashed in America country by our corporate run media and government that we as a country have stopped thinking for ourselves. We need to turn off the TV and turn our brains back on.
McDonald’s wants you to buy their unhealthy high profit foods? Ya think?

ReplyLosing weight, reducing your waistline and generally shaping up is easy even for a 60-year-old "English gentleman". First move into your own apartment, because clearly No.1 wife has not separated caring from affection. Namely, she is over-feeding to the extent you are digging your grave with your teeth. Then fill the dents and get a respray. Which means get your hair dyed, your teeth scaled and polished and update your wardrobe. But don’t go over the top, because pretty soon those clothes will be too big. Braces (suspenders) work with a spare tyre figure. Get a quality set of bathroom scales and keep accurate records. One accurate measurement is worth 100 expert opinions. Next find yourself a new girl friend or three. Say mid 20's, model girl looks, model girl figure. No problemo; literally 10-a-penny here in Tokyo. If you can put yourself about with an attractive woman, the offers literally come out of the woodwork. Everyone’s so busy here that you need three girl friends to get two dates a week. Needs a little imagination to find an activity that doesn’t involve eating, or at least you eating. Remember, it ain’t adultery till you hump her brains out. So no matter how much she begs, tell her you're just too embarrassed to get your kit off and "consummate" the relationship until you've improved your figure; weight and waistline. To which she’ll probably say, “Do have a slice of chocolate cake. It really is so good.” Set something unrealistic, say reducing from 110 to 70. That applies to both weight in kilograms and waist measurement in centimetres. Oh God, you guys still use Imperial, or at least USCS. No wonder you have less and less in common with the rest of the world. So it’s weight training in the gym for two hours everyday, which seriously dulls your appetite. But I’m sorry to report, does little to reduce the mass (that’s weight to you). One thing to dull the hunger pains especially at first is to consume a bottle of 12-year-old whisky every four days. Somewhat counterproductive, however I recommend White Horse 12 for its really peaty taste, but to each his own. And at less than £10.00 a bottle here in Japan, it’s hardly an extravagance. Take your mind off the eating habit, by for example, studying an academic subject. Physics was my bag. Then you can figure out why the official version of 9/11 is a total crock. And rather than some salad-based wimp diet, announce you are going on a hunger strike over some crank cause. For example, “Stop slaughtering whales” or “Tony Blair must resign”. So the chow intake becomes:
ReplyFish and chips x 0
Roast beef x 0
Bacon sandwich x 0
Apple pie and cream x 0
Milk shake x 0
Tea and coffee is fine.
Motivation is what it's all about. Consume less energy than you expend and your body will start to consume its own fat. It worked for me. The body mass is below 80kg (just). And well Japanese gym equipment is for Japanese anyway, and they don’t have the same spare tyre problems as us gaijins. And what’s a divorce between friends. After all even if it was kindness she was killing you with, you wind up just as dead.
Hey, where’s your sense of humour, Infidels?
I completely agree with Randy. Although I am not an American, here, in my country we are trying so hardly to be like Americans, that we have almost forgotten who we are.
We don't have a dollar menu in McD's, but we have $1.25 for a couple of cheeseburgers and I can assure you that most of the burgers McD's sell in Bulgaria are a couple of cheeseburgers for only $1.25.
We also have an ice cream for $0.35 and I can also assure you that most people that go to McD's buy only an ice cream. To explain that I should say that it is a kind of "prestigious" to buy an ice cream in McD's. It's crazy, I know, but that's the way it is.
I admit that many times I have also bought a couple of cheeseburgers for only $1.25 and a coke and fries, but I hate the ice cream :)
I don’t have serious weight problems, yet, although I recently put myself on a detox diet.
ReplyI agree that the $1 price is a tought thing to resists... how can such a cheap meal be bad? it doesnt cost so much, so it cant hurt much... that's the thinking...
Replyinteresting approach from mcd's. i don't know what to say. i know for a fact that their products are very bad for your health. and now, for $1 you can buy more. it's incredible how far they'll go for the money.
