The Shangri La Diet

The Shangri La Diet is absurd, ridiculous, and remarkable. It is quite simply one of the most unusual weight loss books ever written. Author Seth Roberts presents his radical ideas without melodrama or hype, and comes up with a weight loss diet that is both controversial and intriguing.

The technique is simple:

  1. Consume 100-400 calories of sugar water and/or flavorless edible oil daily.
  2. Consume the sugar water and/or oil before or well after meals - at least an hour away.

The sugar water (a mix of white sugar and water) should be consumed slowly (over half an hour). Sugar water is flavorless despite being sweet (unlike soft drinks that have flavors added). For the oil - Extra-Light Olive oil is recommended due to its lack of flavor.

That's it.

No calorie counting, no recipes, no forbidden or restricted foods, no meal plans, and no deprivation.

Set Point
Roberts believes that weight is regulated by a system with a 'set point'. If your weight is below your set point, then you will feel hungrier - and it will take more food for you to feel full.

It is possible to change your set point, and the basis of the Shangri La Diet is that set point can be lowered by eating a food that has little or no flavor - but still has calories.

Right about now your jaw will be hanging open like a fish gasping for water. The Shangri-La seems so farcical that any straight-thinking nutritionist might even dismiss it as a hoax.

Science?
The book explains - in some detail - the science and reasoning behind the diet, the authors own experiments, and various testimonies. The whole diet does in fact have the feel of an unfinished experiment.

Weight loss occurs because appetites are lowered, and the dieter is eating less. This book isn't about building muscle and attaining 8% body fat - but simply about eating less and losing weight. What's different to other diets is that the eating less is incidental.

A Bizarre Fad?
It's bizarre, and it's strange... but... I have an inkling that Seth Roberts just might be onto something.

The Shangri-La Diet is most certainly a paradigm-shifter of epic proportions. When our paradigms are challenged, we all too often respond with our own familiar dogma. Roberts ideas deserve closer attention - but they must not be allowed to turn into a quick-fix mass-market fad diet. When this occurs uninformed people can embark on foolish dietary regimes without batting an eyelid. Roberts is an experimenter - and the diet must be viewed as such - one person's experiments and ideas.

This is not a recommendation. The diet leaves some questions unanswered - it focuses solely on weight loss. What about the effect on metabolism or other health issues such as triglycerides or LDL cholesterol? How about diabetes?

Power to the Blogs
The Shangri La Diet frequently refers to the power of the so-called blogosphere - even as far as quoting blog comments (from Mark Schrimsher's CalorieLab).

You are most welcome to add your thoughts and experiments to this post.

This is my third week and although I have not had any noticable differences in my appetite, I have lost an inch on my waist. I had posted earlier that my bloating around my stomach area had gone down as well as the oil has made me regular, which is a great side effect. I'm only taking the Grape Seed oil (flavorless), which can be found at Trader Joe's since I'm not too thrilled with ELOO because of the processing that it goes through and all the chemicals they put in there. (www.mercola.com explains all the good and bad oils). I am also taking WITH MEALS, Lemon flavored Cod Liver Oil, as well as Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Why? For the health benefits.

I had lost weight before with taking Flaxseed oil and Safflower oil twice a day, and although it took about a month or two, I did lose a size without changing anything in my diet. I wasn't exercising either.

So I think this extra oil in my diet is definitely helping. Good luck to everyone.

I would like some basic instructions if you can give them to me, waiting for the book but want to start today. If you can give me a start to finish in one day that would be great!! Thanks

HI everyone. I just ordered the book, but it won't arrive until October 30th. I want to start right away. I am interested in doing grapeseed oil, in fact I'm going to buy some on my way home from work in 10 minutes. Can anyone give me basic instructions for the oil and sugar water. I don't have a ton of weight to lose, but I'm so tired of my clothes squeezing me day after day and I don't want to go up another size. Thanks to all I love reading your blogs.

can someone please help me with this? i'm 16, 5'3'' and weigh about 128lbs. how much sugar should take a day... and with how much water? i just don't want to take the wrong amount or something...

p.s. i want to get down to about 110...

Jesse, you misunderstand - you're supposed to take the magical oil + sugar water, then still eat food. The theory is that they'll be appetite suppressants.

Amie, you're in the Healthy Weight Range already. The most effective thing for you would be to exercise.

What about cigarettes? I've been on the diet for 1.5 days and I'm worried that my smoking (which we all know leaves a "flavour" in your mouth) is contaminating the whole process.
Almost gagged on Canola Oil last night. I'll stop and buy stop ELOO on the way home tonight.

I haven't been able to find out anything about the Shangri-La Diet. I am curious as to how it works. I don't know how much of anything you have to use, and when to use it. I would like to use it. Nancy

have been on this diet for 3 weeks I was such a soda pop fan at least 64 ounces a day, this diet has made me not crave the soda. Yahoo! Have lost 9 lbs in the 3 weeks. I use refined grapeseed oil 2 tablespoons in a cup of water 2 times a day. I use a colored glass and it helps so you cannot see the oil in it makes it easier to take.

I would suggest buying the book. It's the best way to understand the whole diet, not just snippets found in magazines.
Update: On the diet for a week - lost five pounds so far.

Hrm how does the sugar water make urself better? You don't have to take Diet Pills or anything that's pretty amazing.
I think that's much easier then the South Beach Diet. Looking forward to reading mroe things

Have been using oil for about two months and have noticed very little difference in me. Used sugar water also but would prefer to just use oil as I believe sugar water bloats me and trying to not use sweets anyway. Why is it not okay to drink coffee right after taking oil as it has no calories, like water. Don't understand why water is okay with no "calories" but coffee with no calories is not. I so much want this plan to work. Getting so discouraged. I upped my intake of oil to 4T/day just a couple of days ago. I read somewhere that if it does not work, up the intake. Is that correct? HELP!!

I have followed the plan for a week, and although i have noticed a change in appetite, this has not registered as a weight loss, but rather a few pound gain. I only have ten-fifteen pounds to lose and i am a careful eater, avid exerciser and have struggled with those last ten pounds for years. I have been doing sugar water in the morning (2 T.) and 2T oil in the afternoon. Any suggestions? Should I try for another week or consider myself one of the unsuccessful ones? I would appreciate any advice.

Ruth, the coffee still has flavour even if you drink it black. Water has no taste, so its ok. The thing you are trying to do is stop your body from associating taste with calories. Even if you don't get calories from the coffee, your body will think it did if you drink it right after taking the oil.

You might want to try drinking the sugar water again. For me it seems to help when I switch it up a little. After taking only the oil for a while, my body seems to get use to it. So switching it up helps my body not to get too use to the oil to keep the weightloss going.

Tori, how much sugar water are you taking? Does that mean 2 tablespoons? If so, you aren't taking enough. You need to have 6 tablespoons of sugar in 1 liter of water. it sounds like a lot, but read this it explains it well. Calorie Lab

Trinesha, thx so much for answering. I will try the sug wtr again. I stayed away because I thought perhaps it bloated me and I tend to like sweets too much anyway. Is this supposed to be refined oil? I finally found the magazine article where I first read about it and it said 'refined'. I talked to someone at the health food store and they said oil taken internally needs to be "unrefined" and that refined oils were not good for the system. What do you think? The article does say 'refined'. I want this to work so badly.

Tori

Trinesha...thank you for the reply. I am switching to oil today....the sugar water (yes, i was only putting 2Tablespoons of sugar in the water) was causing a lot of stomach distress. I will see if one T of oil in the morning and one tablespoon of oil in the afternoon does the trick. I will post results if i have any!! Tori

Well hi again gang ... It's been a while since my last post
I have been stickin to the plan - I have more trouble with the sugar water than the oil, I find the oil is just a breeze but the sugar I'm measuring it up and having it in hot water, just seems that I take it better this way

Now for the update

Oct 26th at 164.8
Oct 30th at 164
Nov 9th at 162.2

I also wanted to mention that not only is my appetite supressed but when I am eating my "smaller" portions I find I taste the flavours much better than before.

I'm still walking every day, drinking at least 8 glasses of plain water a day (in addition to the sugar water) and have 1 tbsp of ELOO 3 times a day. I just added some crunches (exercise) to my regime.

Short term goal now is to get under 160lb, then at 156 I can reward myself again. Last milestone reward was 4 movies (VHS) after losing 10lbs - this time I think maybe a trip to the theatre .... my rewards are never food related, just makes it easier to stay with the plan

Anyway all - have a good day and smile just cause ya can

I have over 100 lbs. to lose. I bought this book, and it makes a lot of sense in lowering the set-point. I have earlier learned about fructose (a la Ehret) and how good that can be for our bodies in breaking down the gook we all have clogging every tissue. So this diet made sense to me. The oil I decided to break into smaller portions, since I have long read Adelle Davis books, that the 3 essential oils (in oil) our bodies must have in tiny portions in order to break down our stored fat. I am going to stick with this oil or fructose plan no matter how long it takes.

Ok, so I haven't been on here in a while. I also haven't been following the diet as well as I should, but it is nice to see people still doing well with it. I am going to get back on track. I have been working out at the health club 6 days a week, and in one week (Tuesday - Saturday) I lost 5 and 1/2 inches. But I know if I start back up with the diet, my results will be so much better. Good luck to you all.

I have read all this with intrest and will start tommorow since I have to go to bed. I have at least 250lbs to lose and have literally tried everything short of weight loss surgery, which isn't even an option where I live and I can't afford to travel to get it. I hope and pray I can have sucess as I'm sick of being so heavy.

Hello All,

I was just put on this dietby my back surgeon. I'm
6'2" and I was 240 at time of surgery on Nov 28th 05'. I have lost weight on my own but the loss has stopped at 225.

Doctor found the diet and told me to go on it because he wants another 20 - 25 lbs off.

So today was the first. I started with the sugar water and will do the light oil this afternoon, and at night. I will try and keep all posted. Good Luck to all.

Had pneumonia, was put on cortisone for 4 weeks and gained 35 pounds in 4 weeks -- yikes!!! My joints hurt, and I'm exhausted carrying around the extra weight! Managed to lose 10 lbs with little effort when the cortisone ended, but have 20 to 25 to go. I'm 48, 5'1 and weigh 143 lbs. My goal is to get down to 115 and then maintain there! Wish me luck!

I found out about this when I read an old WW Magazine. I did some research online about the Shangri La diet and decided that I will try it. I figured that if it doesn't work I am only out a couple of TBS of oil. I started yesterday with a TBS and a half 2 times yesterday. I was quite surprised that it cut my appetite right away, might have been the feel of the oil going down (ewww!). Made supper last night the same as I always do, and had lots of leftovers. I ate about half of what I normally would, so that alone is very exciting for me. The oil was a lot harder to swallow this morning so I think I will try the sugar water this afternoon. I have lost 7 lbs since the beginning of November but am hoping this will help it come off a little quicker. I have a lot of weight to lose.

I was wondering if people would mind posting how much they have lost and how long it has taken. Thank you.

I tried the oil, but found it pretty repulsive, so I am now doing the sugar water. I tried the water cold and then hot. It goes down much easier (no gagging) when it is hot. I haven't stepped on a scale yet because right now that isn't the important thing. I know if my appetite is supressed then I will start to lose. I didn't realize how much it was supressing my appetite until we went out for a fast food lunch today. Usually I eat my meal, and then eat the kids left overs and am still hungry. I just barely made it through my meal, and actually was feeling a little uncomfortable. Made me feel really good.

I have just started this but am amazed at the results. I chose to use the walnut oil, which goes down easy enough for me. My appetite has decreased, which is amazing. I am what I call a "nocturnal nibbler" and I no longer feel the urge to snack .

Hi All,

I'm somewhat confused as to the proper dosages of ELOO and sugar water. Should I be taking 2 or 3 teaspoons of ELOO a day at different times and drinking a litre of sugar water? Must one to both? Is it more effective if you drink the SW and take the ELOO. Please help!

Thanks!

Keep up the good work, and keep smiling!! x
