The Shangri La Diet

The Shangri La Diet is absurd, ridiculous, and remarkable. It is quite simply one of the most unusual weight loss books ever written. Author Seth Roberts presents his radical ideas without melodrama or hype, and comes up with a weight loss diet that is both controversial and intriguing.

The technique is simple:

  1. Consume 100-400 calories of sugar water and/or flavorless edible oil daily.
  2. Consume the sugar water and/or oil before or well after meals - at least an hour away.

The sugar water (a mix of white sugar and water) should be consumed slowly (over half an hour). Sugar water is flavorless despite being sweet (unlike soft drinks that have flavors added). For the oil - Extra-Light Olive oil is recommended due to its lack of flavor.

That's it.

No calorie counting, no recipes, no forbidden or restricted foods, no meal plans, and no deprivation.

Set Point
Roberts believes that weight is regulated by a system with a 'set point'. If your weight is below your set point, then you will feel hungrier - and it will take more food for you to feel full.

It is possible to change your set point, and the basis of the Shangri La Diet is that set point can be lowered by eating a food that has little or no flavor - but still has calories.

Right about now your jaw will be hanging open like a fish gasping for water. The Shangri-La seems so farcical that any straight-thinking nutritionist might even dismiss it as a hoax.

Science?
The book explains - in some detail - the science and reasoning behind the diet, the authors own experiments, and various testimonies. The whole diet does in fact have the feel of an unfinished experiment.

Weight loss occurs because appetites are lowered, and the dieter is eating less. This book isn't about building muscle and attaining 8% body fat - but simply about eating less and losing weight. What's different to other diets is that the eating less is incidental.

A Bizarre Fad?
It's bizarre, and it's strange... but... I have an inkling that Seth Roberts just might be onto something.

The Shangri-La Diet is most certainly a paradigm-shifter of epic proportions. When our paradigms are challenged, we all too often respond with our own familiar dogma. Roberts ideas deserve closer attention - but they must not be allowed to turn into a quick-fix mass-market fad diet. When this occurs uninformed people can embark on foolish dietary regimes without batting an eyelid. Roberts is an experimenter - and the diet must be viewed as such - one person's experiments and ideas.

This is not a recommendation. The diet leaves some questions unanswered - it focuses solely on weight loss. What about the effect on metabolism or other health issues such as triglycerides or LDL cholesterol? How about diabetes?

Power to the Blogs
The Shangri La Diet frequently refers to the power of the so-called blogosphere - even as far as quoting blog comments (from Mark Schrimsher's CalorieLab).

You are most welcome to add your thoughts and experiments to this post.

gmornin everyone

I didn't have a great night sleepwise and was looking around Seth's site at the crack of dawn today. I hafta say that I have been having some real emotional problems this last week.

Finding out about this non-diet suppressant style of eating and drinking (ELOO and SW) has been like a light has suddenly come on. Thanks to anyone who comments (Ian gets first commenters place of honor) I really appreciate it and sad to say that at this time I just need it.
OK here's my little progress report:

I'm 45 , 5'5", weighing myself in the mornings:
Oct 4th at 176
Oct 5th at 174.4
Oct 6th at 170
Oct 7th at 169.2

If this seems like too much to you imagine how I feel - I just can't believe it and it means so much to me to hit certain goals - I though I'd never be under 170 again .... but here I am. I write this with teary eyes hoping that it just keeps off - I won't even mind times when there's no change or a few fluctuations but for right now - I'm just so thankful

Have a great day and smile just cause you can

Great Job Christine! That is excellent. I am glad you are having such good results doing the diet.

I want to know is taking the ELOO 3x a day too much? Right now I switch between SW in the morning and ELOO afternoon or just doing 2 tbsps of ELOO 2x a day.

Yes, the thought of oil straight sounds disgusting. However, I found that the flavorless oil, like Canola is fine. It wasn't as bad as I thought. So I'm going to give it a try as I read more than enough positive responses.

I have extremely high cholesterol. I was wondering if taking the oil would make my cholesterol go higher?

Hi ya friends

I'm not even getting on a scale tonite - but I will in the morning.

Trinesha
I'm pretty sure I read in a post that the amount of oil is also dependent or coincides with your weight. For me I'm taking the ELOO 3x per day - my schedule goes like this (except on thanksgiving lol)

ELOO 1 Tbsp upon rising
1 hour plain water
Brush teeth / light brekkie (1 slice of toast with ginger jam
1 hour plain water
1/2 L sugar water
1 hour plain water
light lunch - fruit and yogourt
1 hour plain water
ELOO 1 Tbsp
1 hour Plain water
1 Cup Green tea
Salad + protein
1 hour plain water
ELOO 1 Tbsp
1 hour plain water
1/2 L Hot Sugar Water

I really try to get in as much plain water as I can / 3 TBSP's of ELOO / 1/2 Litre Sugar Water

Gidgetgogo
I'm not having any trouble with Extra Light Olive Oil - but I read that Seth said the refined walnut oil is best - might be hard to find but I'll keep my eyes open for it

Well time for bed for me - I'm just going to keep thinking dreaming and visualizing a slimmer me

Will update tomorrow - even if there is a change for the worst - I know it will bouce back off in no time

Well I thought myself slim last night again and got on the scale and NO CHANGE ;)

I'm still 169.2 - doin a happy dance

I must confess tho that when the dinner was served I felt a bit overwhelmed. I come from a family that you leave no scaps so like a good girl I ate my dinner - I could have done with about half. My tummy actually hurt - I fell asleep in the car on the way home (no I wasn't driving...) and when I got home I just felt really uncomfortable. PS SKIP THE NEXT LINE IF YOU ARE ENJOYING EATING OR DRINKIN lol

I guess my tummy knew there was just a bit too much down there so ewwww some of it came back up.... just a bit. Then I felt a bit better, had my oil and off to think skinny in bed

Well that's all I've got say about that ....
I'm happy there's no change - todays is a fresh day and I already had by ELOO and I'm just drinkin warm water.

This is my 9th day and I'm not noticing any changes in my hunger, I'm actually hungrier. However, I have noticed that the bloating around my stomach has gone down considerably and I'm regular, going everyday without any extra help. I did skip the oil two days because I fell asleep before taking my second dosage. I'm still hopeful.

my mom talked me into trying this with her, i thought it was the most ridiculous waste of time and was too embarrassed to tell any of my friends i was doing this, but i tried it taking 1tblsp of extra lite olive oil and chasing it with the sugar water. i do this twice a day. 1 tblsp of sugar only has 45 calories, you get much more than that in a can of pop, so i figured it was worth a shot. it took about a week before my appetite was suppressed, but i did lose 5 pounds the first week, without dieting. i figure i will try a week at a time and see how it goes.

DIDN'T LOSE ANY MORE WIEGHT THEN THE LAST TIME
STILL 2 1/2 LBS DOWN NOTHING GAINED AND ATE VERY WELL
ON THANKSGIVING BUT MY PLATE WAS ALOT SMALLER AND STILL COULDN'T FINISH IT ALL.
SO THE FEELING FULL THING IS A HAPPENIN!
TOLD ALL THE GIRLS AT WORK AND NOW THEY ARE ALL GOING TO TRY IT. ONE OF THE GIRLS BOUGHT A BOTTLE OF ELOO TO LEAVE HERE SO WE DON'T MISS A DOSE.

I got through the Thanksgiving weekend (well, here in Canada, I guess the States' thanksgiving is much later?), without actually jumping on a scale. While I don't know if my weight is down, I notice that my hunger is reduced, and I actually stopped yesterday at only one desert! A first!

So, overall, I'm still encouraged by how this new pagadigm may actually allow me to reduce my 'set weight'! I'll check my weight in the next few days, but remain highly optimistic that we're 'onto something'!

Seth actually was/is really onto something, we are too but only if it works for us (tongue in cheek here because it's working for so many of us).

I just wanted to add or bring something else to the table (pun intended) lol

- feeling positive, receiving encouragement, giving encouragement these few things amongst many more all contribute to "feeling well"
- smiling in the sun, sneakin in a hopscotch jump or whatever it takes - we all owe it to ourselves to take steps to get us to where we are happy with ourselves, in ourselves (even if they seem like the baby steps)

Note to all - good job ... No great job, well done !! No matter how small the progress is it's in the right direction and "it's all good"

Have a great night all, and just try doing what I do: as you lay your head down on that pillow tonite think of yourself looking slimmer - see yourself how you want to look, think it, and dream slim

LOL. I think it's so funny how everyone is so quick to bash this idea. Sometimes the best solutions are the simplest ones. It's at least worth trying before declaring it ridiculous. Sometimes just a little switch is all you need to make big changes. Try it. What do you have to lose besides weight?

Christine, I am happy for you. I started on October 3rd.
My weight loss has been slower, but good

3rd - 250.0
4th - 247.0
5th - 248.2
6th - 247.6
7th - 247.8
8th - 247.6
9th - 247.6
10th - 247.0
11th - 246.8
12th - 246.8

So, its different for everybody. I wish I could get more results, but I have to learn to be patient. Jennifer, what are you doing along with your diet? Some days I do 1/2 a mile along with my diet. It has also curbed my appetite and I find myself wanting healthier food for the most part.

Trinesha,

I have cut back on snacking between meals, and increased water intake. Actually, as of this am I am down 1.5 lb. I am only taking the olive oil and continue to have better control over my appetite.

Hi All...I've been reading all the comments and thought I would add a few. I saw the WW article a few weeks ago and it intrigued me. The thought of drinking oil did not sound too good to me but I thought maybe I would try it. Family emergency put off the start until yesterday. Went to Barnes and Noble and enjoyed reading part of the book there and decided it was worth getting it through Amazon.com. Well...so I've only done the oil (grapeseed oil because I read it was healthier than olive) twice and the sugar water once (at Barnes and Noble while reading gave me free hot water and sugar). I have already noticed a big appetite reduction. Went to a church dinner today and normally eat a whole bunch while visiting. Not today! Was satisfied with very little and NO DELICIOUS LOOKING DESSERT! This is great! I've been on Weight Watchers and it has taken forever to lose 5 lbs. I think I like the oil much better and found that refridgerating it makes it easier to get down. Also, I put it toward the back of my throat and chase it with a little water. I was down already this morning but I know it will be a slow going thing but I am so encouraged. WE CAN DO THIS!!!!
God bless you all,
Arlys

I have been trying this system for just almost two weeks... I have lost just a little so far, but am still quite optimistic that I will lose a lot more in time.

In the past, it has always been my ravenous 'appetite' that has managed to even the score on any efforts made to lose weight... the harder I work or work out, the more I eat, and often the more I end up weighing, no doubt because my 'set weight' keeps going up as I increase my lean body mass.

Since starting the oil 'protocol' as I call it, my hunger has been much less of a 'tiger' and more of just a good old domestic 'house cat'... which I feel I may be able to control over the longer term, helping my weight to decline. I realize though that the protocol won't do it all for me- it will strongly support though, the other initiatives that I can and will take. And that is the help I am most in need of!!

Let's keep going gang! We can take this hill!

Hi,

I just wanted to clear up some of the confusion about this 'diet' which is not really a diet in the conventional sense. This diet is not based on nutrition or physiology in any way. It is based on Pavlovian conditioning and a particular theory of appetite regulation. The theory of appetite regulation is that your appetite is regulated by the association that your brain makes between the experience of flavor and the digestion of calories. When calories start showing up in your system but there was no corresponding experience of flavor to go with them the association between flavor and calories becomes weaker. According to this theory of appetite regulation, this weakening of the flavor/calories association causes the appetite regulation mechanism to reduce your appetite. The thing is though that thte calories can be anything. If you could puree an ideal nutritious glob and ingest it without tasting it at all it would manipulate this mechanism the same as the oil or sugar water. I am looking at feeding tubes for this purpose. I could then puree a perfectly healthy mix of highly nutritious food and ingest and get all my nutrition without any flavor thereby reducing my appetite. Of course I wouldn't dot this all the time but enough to keep my appetite low.

The blog reports and successes I've read seem fascinating. But I'm reluctant to plunge in for the following reasons. Since sugar is not good for your health, I'm reluctant to drink sugar water. Also ELOO is 2nd process and heated to produce the oil, unlike the extra virgin. So, I'm reluctant to ingest ELOO as well. It seems like one has to keep up this diet to maintain body weight, and I'm not sure if I want to keep ingesting 2 things that are not healhy.
Any wisdom about the 2 issues I have with this diet would greatly be appreciated. Also, could I replace sugar water with organic Agave nectar? Agave nectar is tasteless (to me anyway) and has 60 calories per tablespoon.
Lastly, could someone explain if this sugar diet would be harmful for diabetics? I'm not a diabetic but I'm just curious to know.

To PRISCILLA PARK and anyone else interested....

If you are worried abut ELOO because of the processing of the oil, try Grapeseed oil, it's flavorless and Grape seed oil is reputed to contain plentiful antioxidants, as well as to lower cholesterol levels. In a large survey published in 1993 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Nash showed in a sample group of 56 men and women using up to 1.5 ounces (43 g) per day, an amount that one can cook with, grape seed oil had the ability to raise HDL levels by 13% and reduce LDL levels by 7% in just three weeks. The total cholesterol/HDL ratio was reduced 15.6% and the total LDL/HDL ratio was reduced by 15.3%, which could be significant for those at risk of heart attack.

Vitamins in grape seed oil:
Vitamin E (0.8 to 1.2 g/kg),
Vitamin C and Beta-Carotene.
There is unconfirmed information that grape seed oil also contains Vitamin D.

I read about this in one of the Women's world magazines, and started with the oil yesterday after lunch. I figured if I can manage to gulp 2 tbs of nyquil, I can swallow a tbs of olive oil. We only have extra virgin, so it does have that flavor. I'm going to buy the light this weekend. WW didn't mention the sugar water, so I didn't know about it, nor will I use it. I know this sounds strange, but after taking the one dose last night, I had absolutely no urge to snack- which is my downfall. My goal is to lose 50 pounds which I've put on in the last 2 years of business travel. This morning, I took the oil, ran on my treadmill- drank a bottle of spring water, and am now drinking coffee with creamer and slenda. I won't have anything til lunch when I do a lean cuisine. I'll take the oil an hour after lunch and then no coffee til an hour after. Then a normal dinner with the fam. I was a little queasy this morning after the oil, but the run and water and now the coffee seem to have fixed that. I anticipate with the lack of appetite, I'll be able to actually stick to this- and it doesn't cost me the $ of Jenny Craig etc, and I can eat the regular food I have here. I expect that I will get the book at the library later to read the hype, but so far it makes sense. Of course, I'm an outside the box thinker...and to me the fact that something has never been done before means that no one thought of it.
Don't knock it til you try it! Anyone has any additional encouragement or ideas?

any substitutes for sugar water, that may work for those that are health conscioius? would water with stevia or agave nectar, which are both flavorless work as well?
sugar water is a concern for me, since i do not want to develop diabetes. anything that has white sugar, i try to stay away from.
i hear grapeseed oil could substitute for ELOO. what other healthy unprocessed/heated oils are flavorless?

Hey ladies, I am glad to hear things are going well for you both. I am doing well too! Still maintaining 246.8 (down from 250) I am getting annoyed though, and honestly its my fault. I let my appetite pick up a little, I have been taking my oil earlier (noon and like 4 or 5), and I wind up with cravings at night. I have been doing miles to keep some activity going, but I want to kick start my weightloss into high gear. I know nothing makes you drop 50 pounds over night, but I am so ready. Right now, my goal is to get below 230, then down to 135 (I'm 5'3 1/2 so that is considered a healthy range for my height). But, it is nice to see others hitting milestones, it keeps hope alive for me. Take care!!!!

Hey Trinesha

A journey starts with but 1 step
I didn't think I'd get under 170 again - but I did and my reward was I bought a couple of movies (4)

Don't be discouraged at all, the weight wasn't gained overnight - it didn't just appear on our butts, hips, thighs, stomachs, top of the arms, face - well you get the picture - it took some time

Just keep taking the small steps - any step is progress

I drank 3 glasses of white wine - ok so I splurged ;o(

Woke up a bit late today and just a wee bit fuzzy but got on the scale and the news is 165.6
Wow even I can't believe that - I hate late night munchies and cheated with about 10 roasted red pepper chips (my daughters - I don't think she'll notice lol)

Had my oil and water so far today but I think its gonna be a "quiet day" if you know what I mean (I usually don't drink - but they were gettin bought for me ... lol)

Good LUCK! It's sugar water, not salt...and I am not using that cause I don't like sugar water. I bought the ELOO on Friday- and for the first time in I don't know when, I did not gain anything over the weekend. I typically gain 2 pounds over the weekend and end up taking it off only to start over the next mOnday. So I'm starting today exactly where I was on Friday! Still down 1 pound and chugging along.
