The Shangri La Diet

The Shangri La Diet is absurd, ridiculous, and remarkable. It is quite simply one of the most unusual weight loss books ever written. Author Seth Roberts presents his radical ideas without melodrama or hype, and comes up with a weight loss diet that is both controversial and intriguing.

The technique is simple:

  1. Consume 100-400 calories of sugar water and/or flavorless edible oil daily.
  2. Consume the sugar water and/or oil before or well after meals - at least an hour away.

The sugar water (a mix of white sugar and water) should be consumed slowly (over half an hour). Sugar water is flavorless despite being sweet (unlike soft drinks that have flavors added). For the oil - Extra-Light Olive oil is recommended due to its lack of flavor.

That's it.

No calorie counting, no recipes, no forbidden or restricted foods, no meal plans, and no deprivation.

Set Point
Roberts believes that weight is regulated by a system with a 'set point'. If your weight is below your set point, then you will feel hungrier - and it will take more food for you to feel full.

It is possible to change your set point, and the basis of the Shangri La Diet is that set point can be lowered by eating a food that has little or no flavor - but still has calories.

Right about now your jaw will be hanging open like a fish gasping for water. The Shangri-La seems so farcical that any straight-thinking nutritionist might even dismiss it as a hoax.

Science?
The book explains - in some detail - the science and reasoning behind the diet, the authors own experiments, and various testimonies. The whole diet does in fact have the feel of an unfinished experiment.

Weight loss occurs because appetites are lowered, and the dieter is eating less. This book isn't about building muscle and attaining 8% body fat - but simply about eating less and losing weight. What's different to other diets is that the eating less is incidental.

A Bizarre Fad?
It's bizarre, and it's strange... but... I have an inkling that Seth Roberts just might be onto something.

The Shangri-La Diet is most certainly a paradigm-shifter of epic proportions. When our paradigms are challenged, we all too often respond with our own familiar dogma. Roberts ideas deserve closer attention - but they must not be allowed to turn into a quick-fix mass-market fad diet. When this occurs uninformed people can embark on foolish dietary regimes without batting an eyelid. Roberts is an experimenter - and the diet must be viewed as such - one person's experiments and ideas.

This is not a recommendation. The diet leaves some questions unanswered - it focuses solely on weight loss. What about the effect on metabolism or other health issues such as triglycerides or LDL cholesterol? How about diabetes?

Power to the Blogs
The Shangri La Diet frequently refers to the power of the so-called blogosphere - even as far as quoting blog comments (from Mark Schrimsher's CalorieLab).

You are most welcome to add your thoughts and experiments to this post.

I'm 5'6" and started out weighing 173 lbs. I've been on this diet for a week and I've lost 5 lbs! I use walnut oil and plug my nose, then follow it with a glass of plain water. I take a T an hour before breakfast, 2T in the middle of the afternoon. That's all. No sugar water. I walk about 4 miles a day.

I have no appetite at all, but I'm eating healthy, smallish meals. Judging from the way I feel now, I must have been hungry my entire life!

Reading the book is worthwhile, you get details that aren't on the blog. I just got some flaxseed oil that I'm going to use part of the time. In the book, Seth mentions that flaxseed, walnut and canola oil (containing omega-3 oil) are healthier than olive oil. He also gives startting dosages for oil based on your body weight: 2T a day if you are under 160 lb, 3T a day if you are 160-200, and 4T a day if you are over 200.

He also says that if you aren't losing, you can tweak the kind of oil and the amount.

I'm grateful that I'm so un-hungry.

I had the feeling that I'm never really hungry but always eating to make sure that I didn't get hungry. Or too mad, sad, etc. If this has worked for you in terms of your interest in food, perhaps it does work for emotional eating. :-) I'm just on my first day of this. I use the sugar water. Since one is to consume 200 to 400 calories of food without taste.
One hour away from taste (even tooth paste). Today I miked a lot of water with a 1/4 of a cup of simple table sugar. I've done that twice, wit one cup of sugar being 720 or 770 calories. Maybe one thing this is doing is widing the gap between eating for pleasure.

Hi I live in Japan, and recently saw the deit for the first time on a TV show over here.

I've been doing the diet for about a week now, and my weight is going up and down like a yoyo!

I get up at 5:30am take 1 1/2 tbs of oil(pure) and then an hour later, I have a banana for breakfast.

I only need to lose about 10lbs.

The other thing is I'm extremely constipated, so I'm guessing this has a lot to do with the fluctuation in weight.

My hubby is doing this with me and of course like most men his rate of loss is faster than mine.

I only take the oil once a day do I need to take it twice??
appreciate any feedback.

I read the book yesterday. I'm pretty sure twice was the way to go. Could be just before bed (an hour after last food of course) and early morning. Times not important. VERY FEW RULES.

Interestingly, I have been taking cod liver oil this week between meals where as before I was taking it WITH meals. This week I lost 3 pounds!!!! Based on this book and all of the testimonies I guess taking it before and between meals is working!

P.S. Please make sure you are using a healthy oil., i.e. fish oil, flax oil, cod liver oil, olive oil, coconut oil, etc.

Thanks for all of the valuable info!

I have dieted my whole life and eat very healthy; mostly vegetarian, low carb, no sugar and I exercise a lot; swimming, weight training, stairs, roller blading 5 days a week, etc. and yet I AM ALWAYS HUNGRY and am 20 lbs over my ideal weight.

What I LOVE about the Shangri La diet is that I am never hungry and hardly even think about food any more. I lost 5 lbs in the first 2 weeks because I ate even less of the healthy stuff I usually eat.

Hello! I've just learned of the diet and I am willing to try it.I havent weighed myself, as my idea is to use my clothing to judge what I've lost.

I have just bought the book off amazon for 4 dollars (includes shipping) and I took two tbs of pure olive oil at 11. Didnt eat anything an hour before. at a slice of lite wheat bread w/ a little mayo and two slices of turkey at 12:15.

What should I do for the rest of the day? When should I take my next oil?

the pure olive oil can also make loss weight? because its hard to find an extra light olive oil thats why ill choose to buy pure olive oil coz it has light & delicate.

OK...I've read lots of blog posts....none answer my question. I weigh 368.8 lbs. I started the diet yesterday and weighed 370.4. Which shows that I've already lost some...but whenever I watch my eating, because I'm so big, I lose pretty fast at first. My question is this....I have about 200+ lbs to lose...has ANYONE out there lost significant amounts of weight...how long did it take you and were you exercising, following another diet...etc....

For people who love to eat, the Shangri-La diet is a godsend. Basically, you can eat what you like. The principle behind this diet is that the body has a set point. The actual Shangri-La Diet is painfully simple by comparison: consume nearly tasteless extra-light olive oil, being careful not to associate it with any flavors before or after.

I just heard about this diet this morning from my Internal Medicine Dr. He himself has tried it and suggested it could be something I should consider. He told me to Google it; that's how I found this blog. After reading it completely and reading all of everyones comments and suggestions, I have decided to give it a try. What have I got to lose besides tonage? Wish me luck!

p.s. I put a shortcut to this website on my laptops' desktop.

Today is my 4th day on eloo and let me tell you i had to fidget with the amount i am taking, but it is working i was hopeing to never to eat again after all my stunts with food and dieting i was a complete vegan for about 32 days and all of a sudden after a 10 pound lost ( not my 1st time losing the same 10 pounds maybe my 100th) i got so hungry and it wasn't even really belly hungry it was you better eat everything in the house to fill the void) and i got depressed again and came across the SLD diet it has been working i can't say much for weight lost just yet caus ei dont have a ritual but i do have a beginning i didnt inhale my mcdonalds pancakes today or biscut ate about half of it. An i am telling you i think the vicious diet cycle has run its course cause i dont even have will-power anymore but this seems as if it is in the bag. This is not the 1st time i have used eloo for weight lost i just didnt know when i used it almost 7yrs ago it was one of the reason i lost close to 200pds.

For the skeptics at the top here, you don't know what you're missing and you shouldn't knock it. i'm doing it and it works! For the first while I Just did 1 tbsp. 2x per day. But, today I increased to 1 1/2 tbsp. per day and didn't eat anything I MEAN ANYTHING from noon to 6. I had zero interest in food, and was not hungry! This is huge!

I started this diet a week ago and have indeed noticed a significant decrease in cravings, for the most part. However, I was wondering if others have had similar issues with the following: roughly 1 hr. after exercise (most days of the week I run 3.5 miles at a moderate 8-9 min/mile pace), I am still extremely hungry. Usually I do 1T canola oil 1 hr after lunch (~ 2pm), run at ~3:30pm, then 1T canola 1 hour after dinner (usually around 10 or 11pm). Today I tried drinking 6T sugar dissolved in water (consumed over 30-min, as recommended) right after running to see if that helped (as oil right after cardio probably isn't the best). I think the sugar water may have made my hunger WORSE (stomach making noises loudly enough to wake up my office mates!) I don't know what else to try.. Thoughts / suggestions?

I just started the diet today, and after my first oil drinking experience I have to say, it's not that bad! Maybe I should thank all the Jager shots I took in college for my ability to get anything down! I am trying to lose 65 pounds and believe this might just be the way, updates to come...
