Aspartame and Cancer
There is no link between artificial sweetener aspartame and cancer - according to a new study. This large study involved data from surveys filled out 10 years ago detailing food and beverage consumption. This was then measured against those people that developed blood-related cancers. No link to aspartame consumption was found.
Recently, lab studies on rats showed a link between increased aspartame consumption and cancer.
So there you go. Trust the humans or trust the rats. Cancer scares come and go every year. I suspect many of our modern ailments are caused in part by a huge number of variables working in combination with each other. Everything from artificial foods, to pesticides, to chemical-enriched soils, to prescription medicines with unknown contra-indications.
Throw all that together and no study in the world could accurately replicate such an environment.
Many, many people blame aspartame for a number of health problems. This latest study is not the end of the story.
Don't forget that cancer is by nature a disease brought on by age. Back in the day, more people died from other causes, so many of them may have had cancer and not realized it or died from another cause. As we live longer, our bodies just wear out and the chemicals we encounter during our lifetimes take their toll. I'm pretty sure that there are MANY chemicals that could cause cancer, each of them have different potentials and act on different cells. Your best bet is to consume a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, since the antioxidants in them do a LOT to reverse the effects of external stresses to DNA.
ReplyI believe that determining possible health effects from food additives etc, is a very long term thing. That's why it's do difficult to really come up with emphatic answers to some of these debates. It may take a generation for something to show up.
ReplyI've actually been thinking about cutting as much sugar and artificial sweetener out of my diet as I can. both have made paranoid. It's kind of a challange though, since they seem to be in everything. I would have be a health food junkie (not too far off, go short grain brown rice!).
ReplyBe afraid. be very afraid.
So why don't people run like freaks from cell phones or tanning booths or fried foods or sunlight like we run from aspartame? The risk of developing cancer from exposure to those things is probably there as well...probably at a higher rate than aspartame.
ReplyThe studies were done on the poor SMALL rats. If we feed anything in large amounts to any living creature as small as the rats, of course, they will develop cancer. I would like to see them feed healthy nuts or olive oil in overwhelming amounts to rats and check if the rats develop any forms of cancer. Chances are, they might!
ReplyBottom line is, artificial sweeteners in our beverages or sweets are in such miniscule amounts compared to large amounts fed to small rats. Hence, it would be improper to speculate them as cancer-causing agents.
About 4 years ago i was tested for various food intollerances and aspartame was one of them. At this point there was very little known about the effects.
two years ago in october i reintroduced a small amount of aspartame into my diet - normal toothpaste and diet juice.
On January last year i woke up with no feeling in my legs and from going to the doctor was told that i had a slipped disk and was given treatment and physio rehab. I didn't respond to either.
I have mild Spina Bifida and the concern became that i was losing my legs - not the case.
Over a period of three months i was confined to the house because i couldn't walk and ended up at one point in casualty due to a fall.
I was referred to specialists at the hospital who ordered an MRI scan as spina bifida at the level i have it doesn't get any worse. They were totally baffled.
During this wait i had a thought to check out aspartame and when i did it was like a bolt of lightning going through me. I stopped the toothpaste and diet drinks and within 16 hours i had feeling back in my legs and for the first time in 6 months i could walk pain free.
It has been a long recovery and when i went back to the hospital they ran x-rays and various other tests and they confirmed that there was nothing physically wrong with my legs or back and if i had not diagnosed this they would never have thought about it. I'm still trying to rebuild my life. Aspartame attacked the nerves and ate the muscles in my body from the waist down.
I'm quite passionate about the fact that aspartame is a dangerous chemical and should be banned from all food, drink, and toiletries.

ReplyFokes, That's a LIE! Aspartane is a chemical that you should NEVER EVER put in our bodies. I can't believe that the FDA mad this s____ty excuse to keep better sweetners off the market. So F____ them and I am sticking with Stevia.
ReplyMakes sense. Our bodies run on chemical processes and reactions, so just because something can be created in a lab doesn't mean it's bad for us. Aspartame is, afterall, just two proteins we normally eat, plus some methanol (? If I remember correctly). The latter is a health risk, but you consume far more of it each day through good old fruit and veg than a couple of diet soda.
ReplyIf the aspartame isn't harmful, then why US pilots are not allowed to use it in their tea/coffee while they are on the air??!
ReplyAspartam has been forbidden in some counries.
Replymy dad is 56 and he uses equal in his coffee every day and oiom scared cause i lost my grandmother to a stroke and i dont wantto loose my daddy
