Splenda Side Effects Under Scrutiny
Advocacy group Citizens for Health are asking the FDA to revoke the artificial sweetener Splenda.
Consumers have begun to allege that they have suffered health side effects from use of the artificial sweetener. These grievances about health effects range from skin rashes, to headaches, to severe gastrointestinal problems.
Splenda (brand name for sucralose) has always been viewed as one of the 'safer' sweeteners (see more here and here). There is no way that manufacturers (Tate & Lyle) will wear this. Artificial sweeteners are a massive industry and Splenda is right up there.
According to the Reuters article
McNeil Nutritionals said more than 100 studies have found sucralose safe. But Citizens for Health said studies in people were never conducted with Splenda.Food-related health complaints are very difficult to track, and generally follow a carefully controlled elimination diet in order to pinpoint the offending foods. However, when anecdotal evidence begins to mount, then it is time to dig deeper. Just don't expect Splenda's owners (Johnson & Johnson / McNeil Nutritionals) to start paying for studies that show their 'star' product may have health risks.Laura Tarantino, director of the FDA's Office of Food Additive Safety, said there is a reporting system for food-related problems but it showed no evidence of a Splenda trend.
"It is very difficult to track these (problems) because when someone eats something and then has a stomach ache it's very difficult for anybody to know what it relates back to," she said.
Many people have allergic reactions or low-level intolerances to a number of foods; dairy, soy, wheat, nuts, eggs. When you have a problem with food - you just avoid it - but that doesn't mean everyone else should avoid it as well.
UPDATE: See exactly which sweeteners the FDA approves here.
I know of people that have bad reactions to Splenda, but I've never had any problems with it, so I use it. It's safer than aspartame, that's for sure. It passes through you undigested, so that could be why some people just get really bad cramps and stomachaches. The same thing happens with sugar alcohols as well. Did the people complaining of the stomachaches consume sugar alcohols (which are KNOWN to have a "laxative effect") along with the Splenda in certain foods? That's my question. I'd be interested in this elimination diet to see what the results are. It could just be psychosomatic too...the power of suggestion is very strong.
ReplyNo! splenda really does have a reaction to some people. I unfortunately am one of the people who have intestinal problems due to splenda. Its painful and not psychological.Just clearing that up. Keep using it like I did and im sure you will develop the same.It not a laxative effect like sugar alcohol. Its severe pain in the intestine/somach area.
ReplyInteresting, my husband has had complaints of horrible stomach aches but no one can tell him why. I have had bad headaches for sometime (which I never use to have) and I can almost bet it all started after we switched to Splenda. We're going to stop using it for awhile and see what happens.
ReplyI too have a problem with taking Splenda... at least my problem seems to have begun with trying to substitute Splenda for sugar in my one cup of coffee I have each morning at work.
ReplyMy problem is that I've been experiencing the worst, most atrocious and horrendous GAS of my life! Believe me that is very embarrassing here at work! I am going to have to stop using Splenda and go back to regular sugar and see if my body goes back to "normal" again.
For the past couple of days I've been drinking iced tea which contains Splenda and I've been eating ice cream that contains Splenda. I've started having terrible gas problems myself and I think Splenda is to blame. I usually use Sweet & Low and I don't have any problems with that. I'm happy that they eventually found that saccharin does not cause cancer in people. I think that saccharin is the safest artificial sweetener available now.
ReplyTHERE IS NO SUCH THING as a safe artificial sweetener. try using stevia instead. it is extracted from a plant. 100% natural. 300 times sweeter than sugar.
Replyit is not sweet and it taste gross!!!
ReplyStevia is tricky--even a smidgen too much and it is bitter. And some brands taste beter than others--do not shop by price
ReplyRecently Splenda has made me so sick to my stomach that by the time I get home from work I can't bare to eat dinner. This all starts whenI use Splenda in the morning in my coffee....lately I've been using Stevia, try it , on the shelf next to Splenda and ALL natural, no more problems since I started to use Stevia!!
ReplyRecently Splenda has made me so sick to my stomach that by the time I get home from work I can't bare to eat dinner. ReplyI really feel that any diet sugars are a must to stay away from
ReplyJust do regular sugar and moduration
Try and cut back a 1/4 tsp at a time
There are to many side effects when using diet sugars
and I really think that all the promblems in the world started with peoples eating habits.
If one looks back on their comsumption.
I have been using Splenda (or Walmart's knock-off) for more than 6 months without any problems. I use the kind that "measures like sugar" and have replaced all my sugar use with it. I can't tell any difference in taste in food or drinks. I haven't noticed any side effects, although the post about it causing water retention around the waist was interesting. I will use that as my excuse, whether it is true, I am not sure.
ReplyI do not have a laxitive effect from Splenda but it causes constipation and a very bloated feeling
ReplyI have been using Splenda addictively for about a year or so now. I've noticed that it is causing lots of problems in my large intestine. I couldn't figure out exactly what the problem was with digestion and constipation until I went on a cleanse, and of course, stopped using Splenda in my diet. My intestinal tract returned to normal. Then, after my cleanse, continued to use Splenda again after which, started having problems with my large intestine again. Splenda is definitely to blame - proves my theory.
Cheers
J
ReplyTry stevia. No side effects and it comes naturally from a plant leaf.
ReplyWhat is stevia?
ReplyI just recently bought Splenda and got away from sugar to lower my weight. Splenda made me terribly sick to my stomach, cramping and diarrea. (Sorry for misspelled words)
I am 52 and was diagnoised with Chrones at the age of 13 and Takyasus Arteritis since 16 years of age. This sweetner makes me sick within a couple of hours of consumeing it in my morning coffee.
Sincerely trying to find a new home for this sweetner,
Susan Elmore
Just started reading up on this costly sugar replacement and trying to find the side effects. There is something dangerous with this Splenda to do this to my colon and whole body. Yesterday I decided to give it one more trial and only used one teaspoon and one sugar in two different cups of coffee. It was about 8 hours before I could have any energy to even get out of my chair except for going to the bathroom.
ReplyI have found a very healthy alternative to Splenda, Nutrasweet and the bitter taste of Stevia. It's called Sweet'n It and it is safe and natural. It's a blend of sweet fiber, FOS and other natural sweetners. It prevents tooth decay and actually supports healthy digestion. I've been using it for over 3 years and swear by it. You can google it and I'll promise you'll love it. NO side effects! Tasts great.
ReplyWhere did you find this "Sweet'n It"?
ReplyHas anyone ever thought of using XYLITOL or AGAVE SYRUP instead of SPLENDA? I have been using splenda for a few years now, but every time I use it I have allergic symptoms about 20-30 minutes after using it. So, I have since stopped using it and have started using XYLITOL to sweeten my coffee. Hope this info helps someone. Thanks
ReplyHi I just wanted to let you know that I had liver problems from using splenda. It is known to enlarge the liver. I would have severe pain everytime I used it, once I stopped I was fine. I know another person who went to the doctor, and he was accused of having a liver that looked like someone who drinks a lot, and the guy doesn't even drink. Come to find out it was the splenda. Stevia is a natural sweetener made from a leaf. It's safe, natural and can be found in any health food store, try it!
ReplyI don't use Stevia, but FYI...I have seen it at Wal-Mart. You can get it there now and probably less expensive than at the health food stores.
ReplyMy blood pressure is the gold standard 120/80. 20 minutes after drinking anything with Splenda, it spikes to over 140. This is NOT a placebo reaction. I have had these reactions BEFORE I knew the product even contained the Splenda. In fact, that's (unfortunately) how I found out certain products contained it in the first place. I now read ALL labels very carefully. Avoid the Splenda lie. It's POISON.
ReplyI am a type II diabetic and have been for 14 years, I have controlled my blood sugars with my diet and exercise. When Splenda came out I started using that instead of the other sugar substitutes. A month ago I was on a long trip and realized all I had to eat for 6 hours was some candy sweetened with Splenda. By the time I got home I was having a full blown pancreatic attack, which was confirmed by blood tests. I had been being treated for stomach problems, possible ulcer for the last couple of years. that is when I started using Splenda on a regular basis. I still did not connect the two until today I was eating some sugar free cookies sweetened with splenda and ended up having another pancreatic attack. I realized that the only thing in common is eating or drinking something with splenda on a empty stomach was causing the severe pain and problems with my panceas. I then went online and started looking into side effects of Splenda and found this site. I know that Splenda is what is causing my problems and I have the blood work and diary of the things I ate or drank when I would get sick. I have heard wonderful things about stevia and I am now going to go to the health food store tomorrow and buy some to use in my green tea. I quit, as of right now, using any kind of artificial sweetners. It is not worth the pain and I hope there will be no long term affects.
ReplyI'm curious - what makes you think it's safer than aspartame? It's a chemical. Where did you get the information that it passes through you?
Sugar alcohols spike your insulin. They don't just pass on through without causing an effect.
ReplyThe reason I know it passes through you is because I'm aware of the chemical engineering process that went into the design of sucralose. The amylase enzymes in your body that recognize a sucrose molecule can only recognize the shape of the molecule if it has six hydroxyl groups on it. When they replace three of those groups with chloride groups, the enzyme can't "fit" onto the molecule and break it down for energy. Therefore, it just doesn't get digested at all and passes through your system. Which is why a lot of people may have digestive sensitivity to it, similar to a sugar alcohol. I personally have never had issues with it, but my brother can't eat the stuff without getting major gas and diarrhea, so it just depends on your individual system.
ReplyYesterday I tried Splenda for the first time. I had never heard anything negative about it, so even though they had made a mistake with my coffee and used splenda I figured, what the heck I'd try it. Other than a slightly different aftertaste, it wasn't bad. Approximately ten minutes later my stomach didn't feel too great.. Also started having some pretty intense dizzy spells and then my heart racing. I'm feeling almost back to normal, but not 100 percent yet.
ReplyWhat about the Japanese studies showing as much as 40% absorption in the body. There are very real concerns that the substance doesn't simply pass through your body...and if it doesn't where does it get "stuck"? Many believe it can clog your lymphatic system breaking down your body's ability to metabolize visceral fat in the lymphatic drainage areas (primarily midsection for men and also thighs and butt for women) causing the cellulite appearance. Anyone who has used these products to reduce body fat and then had the resulting water retention in these areas will understand this. As these chemicals (seen by your body as acids) clog your lymphatic system water rushes to the area in the body's effort to "neutralize" the acid causing water retention. I saw this after losing a significant amount of weight and lowering my own body fat only to find this area of water retention around my midsection. With less than 12% body fat I should have been sporting a six-pack. After discontinuing the use of sucralose (I never used aspartame) and using some detox products from France the water retention reduced and my skin firmed up. The only change at that point was eliminating the sucralose and detoxing those chemicals from my body. From what I've seen the only people who should be using these chemical sugar substitutes are diabetics that cannot metabolize sugar. The rest of us should stick to the natural stuff and work it off with exercise!
ReplyDr. Mike,
ReplyCan you tell me what you did to detox Splenda from your body? I've been having some serious stomach problems and migraines and now realize that Splenda was the cause. I want to feel normal again. Thanks.
Dr. Mike,
I have been trying to find out more about all of these artificial sweeteners, and came across your comments.
I have had a hard time losing baby weight and think that Splenda may be hendering my loss- I do consume quite a bit. I have noticed an onset of cellulite in the last 6 months. I am 35 years old so I figured age was setting in. Where can I find out more about the water retention and how to remedy it?
Do you also have an opinion concerning the effects on the GI tract? I have often wondered what the chemicals do to the villi in the GI tract long term. If they are unable to be absorbed could it cause some type of atrophy and thus cancer etc?
I started using Truvia yesterday. Do you think the retention will correct itself or should I take measures to correct it otherwise?
Thanks! Taylor
ReplyYOU NEED TO UPDATE YOUR RESEARCH DEAR. SPLENDA DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVEL.
ReplyWhen I was pregnant, I had gestational diabetes. My midwife told me that Splenda was fine as a substitute for my regular sugar. It was the only artificial sugar that she recommended during the pregnancy. Thank goodness this happened towards the end of my term.
A year later, I still enjoy Splenda in a cup of early morning coffee. I'm guessing that 1-2 cups per day won't harm me.
Oh yes, the baby is bright, good natured, and growing appropriately. So, it appears that she was fine during the gestational diabetes period.
ReplyCheck out Dr Joseph Mercola (mercola.com) who has researched this topic of Splenda, Aspartame and various other chemicals quite extensively - I would avoid both these if you can, and choose something like Xylitol or the herb sweetener "Stevia"... or try tasting more natural sweetness!!!
ReplyWhy do we fall for artificial substitues for food. There is no magic.
ReplyAspartame is broken down in your body to produce low levels of formaldehydes. They aren't harmful enough to really do anything in small doses, but if you consume enough aspartame, it could be bad. But so far, the only real evidence of aspartame being toxic is for people with PKU, a disease where your body can't break down phenylalanine, one of the amino acids in aspartame. Sucralose (splenda) is a sugar molecule that has had its hydroxyl groups replaced with chlorine. This prevents the amylase-type enzymes that break down sucrose from recognizing the molecule. So it doesn't get broken down or digested and passes through the gut.
ReplyHi, I am from Argentina, my name is Federico (20 years-old).I suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) but I had great improvement with alternative therapy a year ago. I was given Splenda (brought by some friends from the US) some months ago, and quickly began to have intestinal problems again. I admit that with IBS you have to be careful with everything you eat, even healthy food may start a stomachache, but I never had any trouble with others sweeteners. Splenda tastes good but unluckly is not for me.
ReplyI decided to try and loose weight by cutting out sugar so I started to use Splenda (and I to have IBS) well cutting out the sugar I started to loose weight but I also started to get gastroentestinal problems (really constipated) and the only change I could attribute this to was the Splenda because it isn't like I stopped eating all together because I'm still eating three meals a day with a snack in between and I'm excersing at least 5 days a week.
ReplyFederico, I too had severe intestinal pain and associated problems. I was diagnosed as having IBS, but later learned that bI actually had Celiac disease. What this means is that my body cannot handle wheat gluten. Wheat or wheat gluten is in just about any food product you can think of and some you don't think will have it do. Make sure that you do not have celiac disease because it is overlooked many times. There is a simple blood test to detect it. When I stopped eating wheat products I felt so much better it was incredible. Good Luck
ReplyI have been to the ER now 4 times with chest pains and what seems like a heart attack. I get numbness in my arms, some dizziness like I will pass out and my heart feels like it is pounding. After every cardiac test twice over, they have cleared my heart and believe I'm having panic attacks. I have no history of anything like this nor am i stressed. I'm 33 year's old and a very calm person. Why am i telling you all this? Because these episodes started about 6 months ago at the same time i started using Splenda in my Coffee. My entire life I have had my coffee with only Milk (never using sugar). A girlfriend turned me onto the sweetener about 6 months ago. At first I thoughts these attacks were caffeine related, but I've always had a lot of caffeine. I have on a couple occasions just poured my coffee (w/Splenda) on the ground, because i started to feel numb and dizzy with-in minutes of drinking the first sips. Trying to connect the dots I asked the doctors and they didn't believe there was a connection. Reading more about Splenda and possible side-effects I am starting to believe there is a connection. I'm absolutely stopping all Splenda to see what happens.
ReplyCraig,
Can you tell tell me if you have noticed a difference since quitting splenda? I too have been to the emergency room and have thought it was related to red wine not splenda. I have quit drinking red wine, but still have chest pain. I am now convinced it may be splenda. I am a healthy 43 year old who regularly exercises.
ReplyI have symptoms that are very similar to those you described. I also experience almost overwhelming anxiety that comes on suddenly. I have been to the ER with chest pains they could find no basis for. Thank you for sharing. Now I know I'm not going nuts. Im' a drinker of Pepsi One with splenda! Orene
ReplyIntersting you mention the heart attack feeling, I was rushed to the hospital because I too thought I was having a heart attack. I didn't think much about my diet at the time, because I eat very healthy. It wasn't until my sister in law told me about a student in her naturalpathic class that went through the same thing, and the instructor told her to remove splenda from her diet, and the pain went away. I too removed splenda from my diet and haven't experienced that pain. However I've been eating this yogurt and little did I know it contained splenda, after eating it for the past month and a half I've been experiencing excrusiating pain in my abs and MAJOR gas, and constipation. I'm a HUGE believer its the splenda I've been in taking (2-3 yogurt mini yogurt containers.) I've decided to remove it completely as I'm so incredibly bloated! This cannot be a healthy substitute! especially if your body is reacting this way!
ReplyWhat brand/type of Yogurt has Splenda in it?
ReplyDianne
Craig, please help me out here. I'm having some really similar problems, suddenly and out of nowhere. I'm a healthy, athletic 57-year-old vegetarian of many years and recently kicked up my protein intake with a powder that contains acesulfame potassium and sucralose. I noticed mild night sweats immediately and slightly increased pulse rate but thought nothing of it as it was mild. Two weeks later, I woke up in the night in a pool of sweat, heart pounding at over 160 bpm, cool-hot tingling sensation in my upper body and strange restless feeling, slightly dizzy. Sound like your experience? Do you still blame sucralose?
ReplyCraig,
I am a 51 yr old male who switched from aspartame to splenda about 4 months ago because I thought aspartame was causing my headaches. A week or so ago I began having heart palpitations (or PVC's). These seem to be worse later in the day after I've had 3-4 diet drinks. I exercise regularly and am otherwise a healthy individual. I am in the process of cutting back on my splenda/caffeine drinks to see if this helps. I don't know if there is a connection but it sure seems suspicious. I am beginning to feel that there is not a safe artificial sweetener.
ReplyI have heard estimates that as much as 15% of Splenda actually is absorbed. I have also read that the chemical structure is similar to DDT which is also disturbing. The advertising is certainly misleading – “made from real sugar.” I don’t think the jury is in, so to speak, on this one.
http://www.antiagingatlanta.com
ReplyI am a chemist and actually, the structure of splenda and the structure of DDT are nothing alike from a chemistry standpoint. Statements like this make information on this site seem untrustworthy.
ReplyI too have serious reactions to splenda. I swell up and have severe stomach cramps and diarrhea. My diet is extremely pure outside of Splenda and my body rejects it fiercely.
ReplyOne last comment on this one: I doubt it will be taken off the market, at least in the near future, no matter what problems the scientific community finds. It is used in too many high profile products produced by large companies.
http://www.antiagingatlanta.com
Replyloved this sweetner in hot foods as well as cold foods hope they never take it off the markets
ReplyI have to agree 110% with a few of you above about this Splenda product. Splenda, which I have used DAILY since my wedding in August 2003 to Feb. 2006, has caused me some great health related problems and I am certain. I have always suffered with IBS & Acid Reflux until I was put on 40 mg of Nexium daily. I was fine and have had no problems with using Nexium daily up until, I started using only Splenda, and products containing only Splenda. I almost completely stopped using real sugar except for those found naturally in foods. Anything requiring sweetness in cooking, etc.. I used Splenda only. Well let me tell you, Splenda I think has made my life a living nightmare and that is being NICE about it. I have been to visit doctor after doctor with side effects and have had test after test. Including various heart scans, blood tests and poked and pried on numerous of times. NOTHING was EVER found!!! I was released one night at the ER with having chest pains and other health problems with a clean bill of health! I have STOPPED using Splenda and all products containing Splenda sweetener. --- ALL health related issues have also completely STOPPED! If Splenda is so wonderful, --- Explain this, I'm very curious. My life is back to normal finally. I would love to see Splenda off the market and with good reason.
ReplyI decided to do a search on Splenda and the side effects because I have recently started using Splenda in more things and more often and lately I have not been able to sleep due to itchy skin. The only change I have made is to add the Splenda to my diet. I have been plagued with allergies all my life and have had to watch what I come in contact with. I am going back to sugar to see if things change.
ReplyI too am suffering from violently itching skin, apparently from using Splenda - the worst affected areas are over bones close to the surface of the skin - shins, arms, shoulders, spine etc. This would seem to indicate that chlorine originating from Splenda is reacting with calcium prior to being deposited in bones. Have you or anyone out there suffered similar reactions, if so, how long does it take to detox?
ReplyTen days after eliminating Splenda from my diet, my itching skin has gone. It is beyond doubt that Splenda was the cause. Had I consulted my GP, I might have been in a position to sue regarding the misleading advertising that this product is totally safe -fortunately for Splenda's manufacturers I have no concrete evidence with which to damn them. My advice to other sufferers is - get medical evidence of your condition so that you will be in a position to take action for damages through the courts.
ReplyWhy don't you sue for penicillin as well? Looks like you quite using the stuff and you're back to normal, what is your problem now? Many of us have no problems whatsoever with Splenda. Sounds like you're a gold digger!
ReplyI have been using Splenda for about a year. I am having higher levels of Chloride when I do blood work. I have also experienced the itching. I also take One A Day Weight Smart vitamins. I plan to stop consuming both to see if the Chloride level changes and hope the itching stops.
ReplyI've had off and on these HORRIBLE episodes that no one has ever been able to pinpoint their cause! I've even had a colonoscopy to find out what the cause was. Extreme bloating and intestinal spasms/cramps that feel like LABOR pains! They render me useless for about an hour and then POOF all goes away! I didn't think about it being related to Splenda until I started doing some internet searching! These episodes started when I was doing the South Beach diet and wanting to cut sugar from my diet. I had some of those sugar free chocolates with the same effects and thought it was from them. But I stopped having those and would still get the horrible episodes of pain every so many weeks or months! I'm pretty sure now the reason is Splenda because I'm using that as a sugar replacement! That will NOW stop and I will go back to good ol' sugar to see if things change! Hopefully once I stop, I have no more of these episodes again!
ReplyI've also had sever stomach pain and will go on for 5 days at a time none stop. My stomach has blown up like I was 8 months PG..............have had numerous tests and Dr. can't find the cause. My son had come over and told me about the splenda thing and now I'm stopping it to see if thats the reason for my pain. The pain is just sooooo horrible that sometimes I just want to die. I'm hoping that splenda is the reason so at least I have answers. God, help anyone else who is going through the same thing!!! GET OFF THE SPLENDA QUICK
ReplyI recently bought a few boxes of Orville Reddenbacher (sp?) smart pop popcorn with Splenda in it (it was the kettle corn variety). After a few days of eating it I found myself suffering rather severe bloating and constipation. I tried natural and regular laxatives to relieve the discomfort, but nothing worked. I stopped eating the popcorn because I started to wonder what the matter was. After I had stopped eating the popcorn for about 5 or 6 days the problem cleared itself, and rather quickly. I went from feeling miserable to "right" all at once. I didn't tie it to the popcorn that I was eating until I read this thread, but it makes sense that it was the likely culprit.
The pain was quite severe and the bloating was just terrible. It was like nothing I've experienced before. I won't be eating anything with splenda/sucralose again after this experience. It's just not worth the discomfort.
ReplyMy son can not tolerate anything with Splenda in it, I really just thought it was him till i started to read other peoples comments, if he drinks anything with it in it, he is in the bathroom for hours, and he is only 5..poor little guy. I unknowingly bought drinks for school that have it in it, I never thought kool-aid would use splenda-but they do, and he has diahrea since school started-I was tossing around the idea of getting the kid some tests, but didnt want to put him through a colonscopy or endoscopy to see what was wrong, then when i went to buy new drinks i looked, and low and behold-there was the culprit. I will take him off of all splenda for a week, and if this child gets better i am really going to be angry-no child should go through that much pain. and what i bought was the "healthy choice"-why cant i have an option without that crap in it? it isnt any good for you!!! it does the same thing to me! if all these people get diahrea and cramping, it is not an imaginary side effect. what ever happened to good old sugar in moderation.
ReplyMelody!
ReplyDo get back to us on whether or not removing Splenda from your son's diet is helpful. There are plenty of confounding factors going on with a young man in his first week off at school :-)
I have the same bloating, but i don't have pain,it is just like someone has inflated my stomach. I am trying to determine what food will trigger this. I USE TONS OF SPLENDA AND ALSO NUTRISWEET. BUT I CANT SAY THAT I NOTICE ANY BLOATING AFTER USE.
ReplyDude, people! Common sense! O.K we have four different choices of sugar stuff. Pure sugar, the Equal brand, Sweet n' Low or Slenda. 1. pure sugar- you need like a whole gallon of it to make your tea sugary + it never mixes in w/ the tea, it just sits there at the bottom of the glass. 2. cancer-causing, enough said, but then again what doesn't cause cancer these days. 3. My personal favotite, kind-of cancer causing, but I heard that it doesn't. Who knows. 4. I use this too, it has never given me any problems- ever. Maybe you people are just to old to handle it.- no offense. And maybe you are just eating the wrong foods with it, and get bloating and stuff w/ that instead, did you ever think of that? I vote go for Splenda. I mean cancer or some "digestive problems"
ReplyVery nicely put! Niice! Splenda fan as well! Don't forget how much weight you can lose with splenda aswell!!!
Replyraw honey is a great sweetener and isn't as bad for you as sugar, it is much sweeter than sugar as well. Also stevia is very sweet and is a natural product derived from a plant. artificial additives are bad no matter what for you and probably the reason we have so many children with ADD and adults too.
ReplyI'm definitely not too old. I'm 24yrs young and JUST found out that Splenda is the cause of my kidney pains. For the past week I've been having severe kidney pains, no fever chills, or nausea, so it wasn't an infection and there was no blood in my urine or discomfort while urinating so it was not stones. I ended up going to the doctors and they could not tell me what was wrong with me without sending off my results to another lab.
ReplyAnyhoo, while at work today, I had my usual cup of tea...right after, the pain intensified. I then decided to look up the effects of slpenda on the kidneys...Turns out that there are some studies that show that too much over a consistent period of time can lead to a swollen liver, kidney and/or a calcification of the kidneys. Interesting...
I always put splenda in my tea and I drink tea at least five times a week. This is going to have me start looking more closely at what sweeteners I choose to ingest.
Dr. Mercola is right. Splenda, saffrin, and aspartame is toxic, especially towards diabetics.
Stevia should be used instead.
ReplyHow do you know that Splenda is toxic to diabetics?
ReplyI don't know where you came up with this. But, I'm a diabetic and everyone of my doctors has said splenda is good for me, and since I started using splenda I'm off all my diabetic meds and control my diabites with my diet. The Doctors also told me that some prople's systems can't handle it and others self dianose themselves without knowing the real reason, but most can handle it. My doctor also said 95 to 98% passes through the body.
ReplyHey hello again!! So I heard that Sweet n' Low was safer than Splenda. I also heard that the scientists just got done with another huge study and found that aspertain(or I think that's what it is.) is actually not cancer - causing. When are people just going to find an overall cure for this. I blame it all on columbus and otherearly settlers because they brought over all of these diseases, but then again they couldn't have known what they were doing. Oh well, we are all going to die someday. My advice- live life to its fullest. I have missed so many oppurtunities because they could have had a bad consecence. LIVE YOUR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyThis is in response to Craig's posting. FYI, my husband has just gone through the same experiences that you have been dealing with. 5 trips to ER. Chest pains, palpitations and PAC's. Was told he was fine and that he may be having "panic attacks" and to "de-stress." He was also experiencing severe "digestive" problems and dizziness with heavy sweating among other unexplained reactions. This went on for about 18 months and countless doctor visits--Lots of "well you look good to me" comments. Finally last summer we figured out that it was the 2 packets of Splenda in his morning cup of coffee that were causing the problems. Once he dropped the Splenda (substituting raw sugar or nothing) he steadily improved. It takes a long time to work out of the system but a year later he is feeling "back to normal" again. BTW he has inadvertently eaten a few foods containing Splenda (a piece of Halloween Candy and a bite or two of sugar-free Jello) and the symptoms came back in a RUSH and lasted until they had cleared his system again...be careful! Just wanted to let you know that you aren't crazy or a hypochondriac. This was a very difficult time for all of us and there was no one out there to validate how he was feeling. Hope this helps. Stay off of Splenda and you will probably feel much better in a few months.
ReplyMan oh man, am I ever happy to read of others problems. I have been having the same symptoms as Craig. I have not went to the doctor, mainly because I didn't know where to begin. My primary symptoms reminded me of a heart attack, but they would pass and I became used to "dealing with them" and I became sure it wasn't an attack of that sort. I have been going to bed at night wondering if I would wake up. They also seemed sort of like a panic attack, but I didn't buy that either. I am certain that it is Splenda related. It coincides with me changing my diet and using Atkins bars of all sorts as a crutch. I had always drank "diet" tea etc. with some of this sweetener, but it occurs to me that I had been taking in huge amounts with the addition of these products. I am now going to figure out how to detox my body and see if I get well. I am convinced that I will.
ReplyEver since I was a teenager I have been treated for a couple of mental illnesses. Bipolar disorder, Obssesive Compulsive disorder and sometimes panic attacks. A few years ago my wife decided to switch us to splenda as a sugar substitute. All of a sudden I began having severe panic attacks. Constant anxiety and agoraphobia. Even tho I had managed to keep my bipolar under control I suddenly began having severe mood swings.
After several trips to my doctors and changing medications I began cognitive behavioral therapy. Nothing seemed to work. I would feel better for a few weeks or months then I would be back to feeling bad again.
I finally had enough and I realized that the one thing that was constantly coming and going was the splenda. We would use then run out of it and switch back to regular sugar then back to splenda. Recently my wife switched us back to a big ol bag of splenda. I have had constant anxiety, panic attacks, chest pain, stomach problems, head aches, muscle twitches and cramps, racing heart and funny heart beats, itching all over my body with no apparent rash, difficulty breathing.
The list go on and on. I have had every blood test and ekg I even wore a heart monitor for a week recording the racing heart. I have finally put two and two together. I wake up, I feel great, a cup of coffee with splenda, 15 minutes later, I feel like crap.

ReplyI'm curious to hear you say you had muscle twitches--my boyfriend eats about 40 packets of Splenda a day, maybe more, and sometimes just to be a jerk, he'll open packet after packet and consume the stuff straight up. Meanwhile, his arm muscles are so twitchy he can't sit still. His arms involuntarily fly off of his lap. His legs twitch all night long. He's sneezing and has a runny nose, and while yes, he does have allergies, he is also consuming not only this much Splenda but also drinking about 7-12 CANS
ReplyMy son has been experiencing tourettes like syptoms ever since he was using a protein powder that had splenda in it. Of all the research I have done and read about all the horrible side effects of splenda yours is the first infor I have run into that talks about the twitching and involuntary arms flying up. Can you share anything else with me about this I feel like I finally found someone else dealing with the same symptom.
ReplyThanks,
Kristin
I have never had stomach problems or a weak stomach. It is usually like iron clad. I recently had a smoothie sweetened with Splenda and had severe cramps, nausea, distended stomach, severe diahrea and body aches all over which lasted more than 24 hours. do some people just not tolerate it? and can it make an individual that sick. I was in bed for almost 2 days and am still weak and not at 100%. I will never intentionally ingest splenda again .
ReplyKaren
I have never had food alergies or any stomach related issues in my life. I have be using splenda daily since about 2003/2004. Up until about 2 months ago i have been having severe stomach problems, and also noticing itching on my shins. I can't seem to figure out what is causing this DAILY problem. I've eliminated the fact that its not daily, it's not wheat or eggs or nuts. The only thing constant in my daily diet is 6 packets of splenda. I know that there are alot of people who don't have any affects, as i never did for years. But everyones body chemisty is different, and our bodies change as we get older. I am cutting splenda out now to be sure.
ReplyI believe some people cant tolerate it. i drank it once unknowingly and within the hour i was in the bathroom the rest of the night. My son is the same way. Some of the people on here say we are not right for saying it causes such problems-but it is a true side effect for some people. And not for others.
Replythetruthaboutsplenda.com is a great website for info...The research area is particularly interesting
ReplyDoes Dr. Mercola sell Stevia? Just asking.
ReplyI've used used Splenda since 2003 and things have been fine.
"Natural" does not always equal "good" There are plenty of
"natural" things that can kill you. When speaking againts a sweetner

To Mrs. Pesimistic: Many of those contributing to this forum have done so because the Splenda appears to have adversly affected their lives. To "live life to the fullest", one must take proper care of him/herself. To say "Oh well, we are all going to die someday" is true but showing little sympathy for those who have suffered from the side affects of another FDA product which was not studied long enough to determine whether or not it is safe for long term use. I believe these people have a serious concern and am happy that they may have discovered the problem. As have many of those who have posted here, I have also suffered the side affects of Splenda and in order to "live my life to the fullest", I must take the steps necessary to feel good while I am alive! Christopher Columbus did not bring over the mind that discovered dangerous Splenda!
ReplyThis seems to be a differnt side effect then other are seeing. My daughter, mother and I all have problems with our mouths being sore after drinking using splenda. We all have had to stop using it.
ReplyI have had several problems over the last year and a half. Chest pains, and mostly horrible loud hiccups that are quite explosive when they occur. They have such an impact that my chest is left sore alot of the time. They are forceful and uncontrollable which casues loud noises as they occur. I have been to the heart doctor, as well as the hospital with chest pains. I am a 34 year old active phiysically fit female. I just realized lastnight after several tests, and alot of confusion as to why this could be occurring- that I started using splenda about the same time these symptoms appeared. I came in to work this morning with intent to just have a look if anyone else has experienced side effects from splenda. I was surprised to find this website. While I cannot confirm it is indeed spelnda as only today will I begin to cut it out of my diet. Will keep everyone posted.
ReplyI am a female, fitness instructor @ an all womens gym. Whenever I hear of one of my ladies are using splenda as a substitute... I go to this website and print them a copy to read, then let them decide whether or not to use the artificial sweetner. I recomend a natural replacement called stevia. Thank-you,Jo Mikell
ReplyFor the last 9 months or so I've used Splenda ( a lot of it) on my oatmeal every morning and throughout the day eaten other sugar substitute foods. During this time I've been experiencing muscle twitching under the eyes and itching skin of which both have about driven me crazy. I have tried to figure out what was causing it and now I believe it must be the Splenda or other sugar substitutes. I thought I was doing something good. I guess if it seems to good to be true it probably is.
ReplyHi. I just started the South Beach diet last week, and being a HUGE sugar lover am having a hard time just adjusting to the taste of the splenda. Coffee is just not the same....however what brought me here, is that I have been experiencing body aches. At first I was concerned I had Lyme disease again, but I am beginning to think it's the artificial sweetener. Thanks for the info, guess I'll have to keep looking. I have lost 5 pounds already though....
ReplyHi,I just want to say, I WILL NEVER USE SPLENDA AGAIN!!!. Craig you are not alone. I was having the same reactions as you were having. I also thought i was going crazy, one day healthy, 6 months after using splenda i was not healthy. I started on the south beach diet, you cannot have sugar. I was never a fan of artificial sweetners but when the commercial said it is made from sugar i believed this to be true. I was wrong!! I did not know at the time it was the splenda wrecking havoc on my life, it affected my job because of the panick attacks. I am a nurse and deal with people everyday. So can you immagine being normal and healthy one day and the next day you dont even know who you are or what happened. I was seen by specialist, had all types of test done. They could not find anything wrong. Then i was seen by a neurologist, he asked me if i have been doing anything different. I said i started a new diet 6 or 7 months ago, (South Beach diet) and added splenda to my diet. He said i bet that is your problem, you are having side affects from it. Splenda is not made from sugar. It is made up of chemicals. He advised me i was not the only one having these problems.
ReplySeems all the problems being caused by Splenda is like an allergic reaction. But the only way someone will know if they are allergic is to use it.
But that isn't any basis to eliminate Splenda or any other artifical product from the market simply because some people are reacting badly to it. Some people are allergic to peanuts (I'm guessing the oil) but we don't see peanuts banned from the market. Some people are lactose intollerant, but we still have milk on the store shelves. There are many people who can't use monosodium glutamate (I love MSG, adds so much extra flavor) due to bad reactions to it.
Maybe Splenda does have genuine health concerns for everyone after long term use (years of use), but until we know what they are, either don't use it if you fear the possible health hazzards down the road, or if you react badly to it. But to make all this noise about it needing to be banned BECAUSE its artificial and yet another failure of the FDA, is pretty silly to me.
Besides all that, nothing wrong with good ol' sugar...So what if has calories. Simply regulate how much you use or the foods you eat. Than you can enjoy a good tasting natural substance and not worry about unknown affects on the body.
ReplyOkay-you make sense-and I agree. My only comment is, so they should make the same kids products WITHOUT splenda as they do with the splenda. Give us more choices. They make special LActose intollerant milk, and foods without milk called PARVE foods, and on my kids school papers it asks us not to send in snacks with peanuts, even if they are not to be shared. So give my child the same choice as all the others (all i am asking for is capri sun water drinks and koolaid water drinks vs fruit drinks-the water drinks all have the splenda in them calling them a "healthy choice") so it is a matter of choice i guess is my thing. and i am only one voice, i get that. it just stinks.
ReplyI understand what a lot of you are going through. I started using splenda to help support my mother in her efforts with dibeties. I started having the chest pains and pain up my back. I have broken out in a rash. And just today my doctor called i have a problem with my liver because of Splenda ( and no it is not because of drinking because I rarely drink, only once a year on my aniversary.) before i got to the doctors figured it was the splenda bothering me, so i stop using it and the pains began to stop. but a couple of days after the pain stopped I had a low carb ice cream since mom was counting carbs for the dibeties. this low carb i cream was made with splenda and i didn't know. Because of the one ice cream I was sick and couldn't keep anything down for 2 days. The doctor told me to stay away from the splenda. But now i am going to have to have all these test to find out how much damage was done to my liver and find out if it can be reversed.
I am telling you this so you can take it in to consideration. Everyone has to make their own choice in life. But My choice is that splenda will not be in my home. I have 2 small childern to think about. If i end up having to deal with a health issue in the future where i have watch sugars i will do without any of the subsitutes. But that is my choice.
Any of you having problems with Splenda should also make sure your liver and kidneys are okay.
ReplyI was excited when Splenda hit the market, but like all things in existence, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. There will never be a substitute for the real thing. With that said, I have to say at first I was kinda weary to use Splenda (because of the whole too good to be true thing) and I started using it off and on in tea and coffee, you know, just like 1-2 packets a day. Well then my mom decided to start baking with it, and I started buying more products that had it......and well the last two days have been hell for me. I already have IBS (AND I'M ONLY 22 BY THE WAY!) and before these past two days usually other foods set my stomach off.
Well yesterday I had two cups of green tea which was sweetened with two packets of splenda (two packets/cup) and then later that night (about 3 hours later) I bought some berry Mentos that were sugar free (aka sweetened with Splenda....) ate a couple of those.....and then came the stomach cramps.......OH GOD!!!!!! First my stomach got bubbly like when you start to have gas....but then it progressively got worse where I could actually feel the bubbles rolling around inside my intestines.....and then came the burning sensation...my entire stomach and intestines felt like they were on fire......This lasted well into the night, until finally my mom gave me one of my dads stomach pills that settles it down and relaxes it. That was just enough to let me get some sleep. I honestly think those Mentos had a lot to do with it, I think they were like PURE Splenda!
Then there was today. First I ate a bowl of the NEW Cinnamon Toast Crunch with less sugar (because it's mostly sweetened with Splenda) I didn't realize this until after I'd eaten it either. I bought a can of DIET Arizona Green Tea. Of course sweetened with Splenda. (Again, I didn't realize it was Splenda sweetened until AFTER i'd started drinking it)and I ate like 2 of those damn berry mentos again also. It wasn't until I started reading that Splenda might be causing all of my digestive problems that I realized that I've been ingesting more than usual. Today isn't as bad as yesterday, but my stomach has the same bubbling and burning. I feel nauseated too.
I am 110% posititve that it's because of the Splenda and I'm cutting it out of my diet completely!!!! I'd rather eat the real thing then have to deal with feeling like this. It's to the point that it's debilitating! I'M ONLY 22!!!!!!! I shouldn't feel like I'm 60!!!!
Replyi CAN'T BELIEVE YOUR SO SENSITIVE TO SPLENDA-- I MEAN, 2 MENTOS AND A BIT OF CEREAL FOR CHRIST'S SAKE. I DRINK 2 OR MORE POTS OF COFFEE AND TEA A DAY (NOT CUPS ,BUT 12 CUP -POTS!)AND SWEETEN IT ALL PRETTY WELL WITH PURE SUCRALOSE DROPS (THINK OF SPLENDA WITHOUT ANY DEXTROSE OR MALTODEXTRIN, SEARCH FOR SWEETZFREE DROPS) i MUST SAY THE SPLENDA GIVES ME SOME MODERATE TO BAD GAS BUT NO PAINS. i GUESS WE ALL REACT DIFFERENTLY TO SPLENDA AND OTHER SWEETENERS.
ReplylET'S FACE IT, THEY ARE MAN MADE AND NOT NATURAL.
ALSO REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE SOME NATURAL THINGS THAT ARE POISONOUS OR TOXIC AS WELL.
i belive she can get that sick.i get sick from the slightest amounts.more violent.i get extreme cramps and diareah.the last time i drank splnda i lost 15 lbs in a bought of sickness.that lasted three days the onley times i get this sick is when i drink or eat splenda.
ReplyI started using Splenda when it first came out. I was going to Weight Watchers trying to loose wieght and this was the answers to my prayers so I thought. For 2 years I suffered with sever Vertigo. I thought for a while I even had brain tumors my headachs were so bad and the dizzyness was just unbearable. I went to the Dr. who gave me stuff to help my syptoms... alergy medicine, motion pills we tried everthing. Finally one day I was sitting in church literally wondering why I felt so horrible. Reached for a stick of gum... and it dawned on my husband. We got home and started researching and read that one of the side effects of Splenda was vertigo. He asked me to try to give it up for 3 days. Mind you I used it in everything... but I wanted to be healty more then to be thin. So I did within 3 days the spinning lessen... with in 3 weeks they were gone. I have not had many "episodes" of vertigo since. I word it this way because I am more careful then every now because I was at the store and "tried" some demonstration food... did not read the lable it had surclose derived from you guessed it Splenda with in 20 min my head was full congested and by that evening the room had started spinning again! Will it be taken off the market? Probably Not! Will I ever use it NO... my family has seen such a difference in my health that they will not use it either. Yes I have gained my wieght back... I'm still trying without the aide of Splenda. I loved the way it taste but hate the side effects. I write this only to inform people they also need to watch out for things like surclose and other items derived from Splenda. I understand many of you who read this won't ever had a side effect and be thankful becuase those of us who have understand. Those of you who are questioning... please please for you own health don't use if for 3 days and see if your symptoms don't go away.
ReplyI am wondering if anyone on here has had surgery on the intestines and is experiencing severe bloating due to use of Splenda? I had surgery for a bowel obstruction several years ago. After surgery, my stomach was supersensitive but that graudually subsided. A few years later, due to constant dieting, I started experiencing ridiculous bloating. Probably due to artificial sweeteners. So I dropped aspartame for splenda thinking it was more natural. Since I don't drink enough water and carbonated beverages caused bloating, I trained myself to start drinking flavored bottle water with splenda. I usually would drink 2 to 3 bottles of flavored water a day. Needless to say I am experiencing terrible bloating. Everyone thinks I am pregnant. I suspect it is the bottled water. Has anyone else with surgery of the stomach experienced this sensitivity post surgery, especially with artificial sweeteners? My doctor could not explain the cause of this bloating. It does not appear to be IBS. Dieting or not, I am dropping the artificial sweeteners.
ReplyI thought I was coming in contact with people whe had had a GI virus and until I re3d the comments on this website, I did'nt realize that my intestinal bloating, pain, cramps and loose stools could be related to splenda. I will not use it again and will relay another statement to you all, after a couple weeks to be sure that splenda was the culprit, which I am sure it is.
glad to have found this website
ReplyI have used Splenda since its debut on the market, what, two years ago? However, after reading 'here and there' articles on its possible side effects and detriments, I began to look inward at my own physical symptoms and quit using Splenda immediately. I'm embarrassed to admit that for over 2 years I consumed 14-20 packets of Splenda in my morning coffee regimen and continued dosing the product throughout the day with my "Splenda-sweetened" tea - a gallon of tea made with over 2-3 cups of the stuff. I would sometimes down 4-5 glasses a day of that! I thought I was doing a service to my body by staying away from sugar. I mean besides, wasn't this stuff "made from sugar?"
ReplyWhat stopped me was a slow progression of always feeling bloated. I felt like my digestive system was never "on track." I was also constipated very frequently, which was something new to me. I had never had problems with this before. These symptoms became more frequent and more intense over the past year. Also, I was often feeling "blah" and unfocused. After reading other people's testimonials, I decided to quit Splenda just to see what would happen with these "symptoms." I figured I had nothing to lose.
It's only been 1 week and I already feel so much better. I went back to using sugar, and I will start using something call Stevia to sweeten my coffee and tea from now own.
To conclude, I'm not sure what exactly Splenda does to the human body; however, I am sure that my own body functions better without the stuff. If you're not sure whether you're overall well-being is being affected by this product. I encourage you to cut it out of your diet for a week or two just to see if any improvements occur. What have you got to lose?
In response to those of you who posted about having chest pains directly related to Splenda use - THANK YOU! I am a healthy 38 year old woman who over the past 4 months has made 3 trips to the ER with chest pains so bad I could only assume I was having a heart attack. After a slew of tests, each time I was told that I was perfectly healthy...no signs of heart problems - go home. My doctor (probably) thinks I'm a nut because I've been telling him about this since it started. He says I'm having panic attacks - well, YEAH...when your chest, aorta, and left arm hurt so bad you want to cry - you do tend to get "panicky"! Anyway, I've been using Splenda (lots of it) for the past 5 months (one month before the chest pains started) and after reading the posts here, I have no doubt that this is the culprit. I'm throwing everything containing Splenda in the trash TODAY where it belongs. I can only hope that this toxin gets pulled off of the market before someone actually dies from it.
Amy
ReplyPlease help a newbie and thanks in advance! I had become completely hooked on 7up Plus made with Splednda and suddenly it was GONE of every shelf with no warning or explanation. Is this the reason?? Could the Splenda and the Aspartame be causing any skin problems?? I have to add that I have the genetic disorder of Multiple Sclerosis that has just moved into the secondary phase.
ReplyI also have Vertiligo (where the skin pigment dies out in circular batches wherever it decides it wants to). I am at my wits end with this weird white bumpy crap on the back of my arms and the tops of my thighs. Once the hair is free from the small whitish bump, the skin gets HARD and therefore perpetuating the problem!! Any guidance you can give would be so greatly appreciated!
Ali
it sounds like the white bumpy stuff is keratosis pilaris...it's a hardening of the keratin in your hair follicles...i, too, have it and my doctor said that there wasn't anything you could do about it...and that it was genetic... hope this helps.
Reply(splenda) is a sugar molecule that has had its hydroxyl groups replaced with chlorine. Its as simple as that. probobly one of the safest substances ever offered on the market. The sugar industry is backing most of the negative reports you see about this stuff and for a good reason. Its hurting their business. Now you have these hypercondriacs out there claiming its causing all these medical problems for them. Nonesense. I cook with it and drink stuff with it all the time. Modern technology at its best. And as far as the fear of a Chlorinated compound goes..... Hmmm can anyone say TABLE SALT.
ReplyMy ears have been ringing for the last couple of months, coincidentally I have been drinking Hansens's diet soda for the past two-three months. This is freaking me out. Are there are other sucralose users out there suffering from ringing of the ears?
ReplyAre you people kidding? You must have other health issues.. I've been using Splenda for a few years- NO problems.. however, when I was drinking coffee with caffeine, I noticed severe heart palpitations.. cut out the caffeine first before you blame all your health problems on Splenda lol
ReplyI am reading the comments here and and there are ones that are understandable, then there are the ones that are flat out ignorant. Not everyone can tolerate certain foods or food products. I am diabetic and I can tolerate most artificial sweetners, but yes, splenda does aggravate my system. That does not necessarily mean splenda is a bad product, it just could mean my it does not blend well with my system. Everyone should be alert to their bodies and what they can and cannot tolerate when eating food or non food products. What I cannot tolerate is the ignorant comments degrading people because they are having side effects from this product. Just because someone cannot use it does not make them a hypocondriac, nor does it make them mental, etc. I will say this, the FDA does not test products as thoroughly as they used to and due to this process we are ultimately the testing for a lot of them. I understand this is due to protocol changing, but it is also causing medications being recalled at an alarming rate after people have problems, food products being recalled, etc. My suggestion to you and to others is, be aware of what you use and injest. If you have proplems, then stop using it. Just because it works for someone, does not necessarily mean it works for you. If you are diabetic, use your head and talk with your health care providers. Do your homework, there are alternatives you can use in your diets. Adjust, stop being a lemming and teach yourselves what is good for you. And for all of the critics out there, look in a mirror and be greatful you do not have to deal with a condition you have to watch on a daily basis.
ReplyFor 2 years now I've suffered from a constant urge to urinate. Feeling like I have a constant bladder infection. I've been to the urologist off and on and underwent various testing to see what could be causing my problems. Many times I was up 6 to 7 times a night going to the bathroom. My bladder felt bruised and full all the time. I tried several different drugs for this. Nothing has helped. Never in a million years did I consider that the Splenda I used everyday to sweeten my coffee or tea or in the homemade salad dressings might be the cause of my problems. Last Sunday after a particularly bad night, and thinking that I'd used quite a bit of Splenda over the course of the weekend. I got on my computer and did a search of Splenda's side effects. I was shocked when one of the first searches said that if people had any bladder irritation, to immediately stop using Splenda. It's been a week now, of not using Splenda at all and I feel so much better. If my symptoms don't come back within the next couple of weeks I will know that it was indeed the Splenda causing all of my pain. It will be a huge relief if that is the case because my symptoms were very frustrating for a 35 year old woman. Very scary!
Reply3 months ago I started drinking diet soda, with splenda in it. Shortly after, I started getting ringing, buzzing in my ear. I went to the dr., who flushed out my ears, didn't help. A month later went to another dr. who prescribed steroids for a possible blocked eustachian tube. Didn't help. Saw a ENT today, who is puzzled. Then she asked if I use Splenda. I lightbulb went on. I will give up my diet soda with splenda and see if that is the culprit. Meanwhile, I am scheduled for hearing tests and a slew of bloodwork. My guess, it's the splenda
