The Baby Food Diet

Menswear designer Hedi Slimane creates slim-fitting clothes - probably because he is rather thin himself. The Telegraph reports that his 'secret' is baby food.

"The less I chew, the better," he tells one interviewer. Chicken, according to rumour, is his favourite flavour.

The Telegraph writer then goes on to try his own baby food diet.

As I trawl the baby-food section of my local supermarket, I have no sense of impending doom. Fisherman's pie. Vegetable hotpot. Fruity chicken casserole. Banana and cookie crumble. Yes, it's baby food but the labels on the bottles sound reassuringly like real food. Organic baby food seems to outnumber non-organic by two to one.
Hey... whatever works I guess...

The results:

I have lost 4lb over the weekend, according to the bathroom scales. But the inside of my mouth taste's like cat's fur and my head aches. I would not recommend this regime to my worst enemy.

Uh, gross. Cold pureed green beans and "meat". Icky. ALthough, Gerber makes a really good apple pear sauce that's kind of a yummy dessert. But yeah, how could you not lose weight eating pureed carrots? GROSS!!

I have heard of weight trainers eating a couple of pots of baby food right after a workout too as a quick fix! Not sure if it is one for me though!

I think that if I were going to go the "I don't want to chew" route, I'd use a food processor to puree the food, and be able to spice it up the way I wanted it.
Still, the whole idea sounds a little distasteful to me!

If all I had to eat was baby food I would probably loose weight too. What's next - the adult breast feeding diet?

I have tried it... when I couldn't chew anything for 3 days. I did lose a couple of lbs. But I could only eat the fruit and dessert varieties and had to supllement my diet with a protein powder smoothie every day.

The issue here is that unless someone wants to eat baby-food for ever, the diet will ultimately fail in the long term when they start eating 'normally again. Weight 'yo-yoing' practices like this put our bodies under huge stress and we can end up with a bigger problem than before.

James is absolutely right to suggest finding a lifestyle plan and sticking to it. You don't need diets. And his plan looks good, there is just one thing I would clarify for other people James...

You include sunflower oil as an oil to be avoided, but it is possible to get organic, unrefined, cold-pressed sunflower oil which, along with many other cold-pressed oils, is absolutely fine.

I would also question the 'need' for red meat, but agree that if you are going to eat it, grass fed, organic (ie. free from anti-biotics, steroids etc.) is the way to go. Otherwise I'd say eggs, chicken (both free range, organic), fish (non-farmed) are all fine.

As for dairy... butter and yoghurt from cows' milk is okay, but soy, rice, nut or goat milk and a cheese from goat or sheep are preferable because they are all easier for humans to digests.

Plus, there are so many fantastic plant proteins which you haven't mentioned - tofu, chickpeas, beans, seeds, lentils, quinoa etc. - which are all absolutely fantastic for weight loss. And if you chew properly and reduce your sugar intake, you won't get any embarassing wind with it!! ;o)

Just make gradual changes in your lifestyle and slowly try to cut excess sugars and saturated fats. Also start adding more veggies, fruits and whole grains. That's all there is to it. No secret. All that really matter is how calorie taken in and how much you exert. So that means exercise plays a role in weight losss and muscle tone. Make the calories that you intake quality and nutritous. No Gimmicks. Gradual changes and moderation on foods, not eliminating is the key to a healthful and energetic life. God Bless you all!

(IN RESPONSE TO CLAIR)

The reason is to why to avoid sunflower oil, as for now, is because it upsets the Omega 6-omega 3 ratio. You need to keep it as 1:1 as possible. Also, I would choose olive oil over sunflower oil, because olive oil has a high smoke point, and has less potential fats that go rancid when it comes to cooking. You DON'T want to have any omega 3 nor omega 6 fatty acids in the oils, as heat damages the molecues, and that good fat will become bad.

And you have to think about it. Some red meats arn't bad for you. What red meat to TRY to avoid is lot-fed beef cattle, as they have an unhealthy fat ratio and bad quality protein. What I DO suggest eating sometimes is bison, ostrich, and emu. They have more nutrients, have a better polyunsaturated fat ratio, as well as a balanced monounsaturated fat-saturated fat ratio. They are extremily low fat, anyways, and have less cholestrol and saturated fats than even in chickens. Afterall, all red meats arn't created equal. And I am clarifying it: Certain red meats are bad for you, and the ones that you should avoid, again, are badly fed, badly treated and drugged, corn-fed lot-fed cows. Stay away from them.

And I have to stress this: Chickens are one of the worse treated animals in the US. Try looking at factory farms on the internet. I am just appalled on how they are treated. They get drugged, they have their beaks chopped off by a hot blade, they are fed a poor diet, and eating meat fed a poor diet will make YOU sick. So for now, don't buy store-bought chicken. My restaurant that I take out now, I usually take out Hobo Salmon topped with unions with cucumber salad and steamed, flavored vegtables, but I just can't wait till they release bison on the menu.

But as allways, make HALF your animal protein intake in fish, and make 75% of it oily fish. Salmon is low in mercury, too. There's a new hawaiian fish that's comming out that's even lower in mercury and is even oilier than salmon. And since Americans are Omega 3 and magnesium deficient, it's a great time to add plenty of fish into the diet.

But there's one that should NEVER be on anyone's diets. They are: starchy vegtables and grains (like white potatos, white pasta such as macaroni, spaghetti and strogenoff), fried foods, sugary junk (like eating ho-hos or ring dings every day), pastery, and doughnuts.

And as allways, GO ORGANIC! New research shows that pesticides are deep in fruits and vegtables and could lead to health problems like heart cancer (Yes, heart cancer is on the rise), blindness, nearve problems, miniral deficiencies, and even brain tumors. Pesticides are also polluting the soil, polluting the streams, and are even causing calcium deficiency in birds which causes them to lay eggs with very thin shells. Factory farming is now contributing to global warming.

But, I accept GMO foods with nutritional pluses and animal domestication and faster production, but please, reject GMO foods designed for pesticide resistancy and termination seeds, as these types of GMO is a danger to the enviornment.

are some of the foods deadly if your baby is over weight?

Reply
Carrie

the baby food "diet" only works if you substitute your current desserts with 100 cal. jars of banana pudding baby food, etc...
it is just as easy to slice a banana and freeze it tho--for a good dessert.

Baby food is great for traveling, some of the fruit stuff and some veg taste very good. Not a bad idea to include it when camping or long journeys. Better(on a few levels) to eat a jar of sweet potatoes than a bag of doritos. Overall I think it is probably too sweet. I have never tried the meats (which would need heating to be palatable)

If you ate it often, INSTEAD of your regular healthy food, of course it would make you ill... psych & phys both. My sister eats the desserts all of the time and she is no baby--she has had a few so she knows what is tasty and what is not.

The baby food diet does work I have lost 23 pounds in 3 in a half weeks ,but I only eat a large jar of baby food for dinner the meat sticks are the best mixed with mustard (no calories or fat) I have 1 slim fast snack for breakfast and a green salad with chicken or turkey meat on top and use that new salad sprittzer for dressing for lunch. and for dinner a jar of baby food I only eat the dinners though I dont buy the vegtables and sometimes I have a yogart for dessert. It doesnt sound like alot but after a week you get use to it.

I exercise and just can't seem to shift the bulge around my stomach and thighs so I'm taking the last resort really. I'm only doing it for 2 weeks though.xx

i read that you eat 2 baby food meals and then eat a normal third meal..but some people go all out and eat 3 babyfood meals and then just drink lots of water and juices..fruit juices, diet coke or whatever.

Don't do anything you don't LIKE. Any diet plan requires your feeling satisfied with what you eat. I personally like baby food and I eat it often because I'm too busy to cook. I'm not overweight. In fact, I'm extremely heatlhy, which doesn't happen by chance. I have always eaten well, tried to stay away from restaurant food, and I exercise daily for about thirty minutes. Lots of people scoff at the idea of eating baby food, but I think it is ironic that the same people eat stuff that is much more unnatural; our culture has accepted certain things and the masses have blindly followed the leaders by ingesting oddities like cheese, candies, ice cream, fried foods, etc. If you really think about it, baby food is about the least strange or odd kind of food. For most of human existance stewed and crushed foods have been the mainstay of our diets.

When you eat baby food, hm... In small quantity you receive a lot of calories. Then you will eat something delicious and everything will be transformed to the fat.

I found that if you eat baby food every other day, that you will still lose weight, and not have the headaches that you get with eating it everyday. So far, I have lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks. On the baby food days, I only eat baby food and salad. It keeps the metabolism up. On non baby food days, I eat whatever I want. I am going to start incorporating exercise next week, I just wanted to see how my results would be without it. It works.

You do realize baby food is fortified with vitamins. I coundnt eat very much for several months because of a stomach tumor and my Drs had me eat baby food and drink only water. I never had and deficiencys and I had alot of blood work done during the process.

I'm lazy about chewing, so I have to confess I regularly eat what people feed babies and toddlers - not baby food in pots, but I eat porridge made with farina aside from the regular oatmeal one, applesauce, peach applesauce, mashed bananas, stewed prunes (although this one also feeds the elderly, haha), soup that I have blended, and creamed/pureed vegetables like spinach, carrots, corn, and pumpkin. I'd also trade any grown-up dessert for a bit of cold porridge made with Nestle's farine lactee (I don't think you have this in the US - it is like a sweetened mix of farina and powdered milk sold for babies).

Other than the price, I wouldn't mind snacking on the fruit baby foods. The applesauce I buy, although refrigerated, does have a baby on the lid. The spiced-up grown up one near the sauerkraut is sweetened, the baby one isn't.

After 5 pregnancies I am ready to lose weight again(after my 2nd baby was born I lost 100 pounds drinking slim fast and 2 hours a day of aerobic exercise).I think I will try this diet and add exercise to schedule as well.Does anyone know if we eat the small baby food jars or the large ones?I am also breastfeeding my youngest. How many more jars should I eat so that my milk is also nutrienty packed for him? Please email me at :Born2BearBabies@aol.com with your response in case I don't get back to this site again.

Trish, I think you should definitely check with your doctor if you want to do this diet while breastfeeding.

Reply
Jan74

Nic is right. You need to follow a breastfeeding diet, similar to a pregnancy diet, given to you by your doctor, midwife, or dietitian. You cannot go on any weight loss diet, this or any other, because you need to eat a variety of nutrients, just like you did when you were pregnant, to nourish your child.

I am 30 this year and have put on 30 pounds since my last child who is 7 now (I currently weigh 140lbs now). I don't work out on a regular basis but have all the facilities to do so. I started the baby food diet today. Had a jar of Turkey for breakfast, some veggies for lunch and will have a Chicken and rice dinner for dinner. I hope to work out for at least an hour 4 days a week to start. I don't mind the food and hope to use this to kick off my weight loss goal of 25 to 30 pounds. I am only 5'5 so 140 on me makes me feel like a whale. Wish me luck and send me any advise that you have about loosing weight on this diet plan!! Thanks

I think that you are all crazy, "the baby food diet" i have 2 children and all the food is mingin, wouldnt you just rather starve yourselves for like two weeks. Its called baby food for a reason, its for babies!, do you know, they are them things that cry and wear nappies. Grow up, your not babies, just go on a controlled diet and except your problem, i wanted to lose weight and i ate healthy (adult food) cut out all the snacks and did exercise reguarly. Your body is gonna be so unhealthy.

Reply
Jamie

Wow Samantha. calm down. If they want to go on this diet, and it really works for them, then who are you to tell them to grow up? I do agree that eating ONLY babyfood EVERY day seems a little weird, but incorporating it into your diet isn't going to harm anyone. Baby foods are packed with vitamins and minerals, and saves your body from having to break down foods every now and then. So using baby food as a healthy snack every now and then won't hurt anyone. If it was that harmful, would you be feeding it to your babies? probably not. baby food in moderation will not hurt you.

I am currently on a baby food diet by force because I had some dental work performed and I don't want to cause any infections. As a suggestion you can add seasoning such as Mrs. Dash which has No MSG so that that the food is not so gross to the pallet. Happy dieting!
