Drinking Water With True Lemon
Every year consumers spend billions on flavored beverages. Yet nearly every one of us in the developed world has easy and cheap access to fresh water. Whether it's about taste, hip-ness, or sheer drinking pleasure - plain old water always ranks low.
This week Culture Captioning sent me some samples of True Lemon ("Crystallized Lemon Substitute") and True Lime flavor sachets. They were adamant about me being completely honest. So I will be.
When I ripped open the first sachet, the aroma faintly reminded me of a cheap can of fly spray - no doubt some awful lemon-scented concoction I'd foolishly used one summer. However, after that false start - it was time for the taste test.
The Taste Test
True Lemon and True Lime are true to their word. Get the portion of water right and it tastes just like you've squirted some slices of lemon in there. I honestly found myself reaching for the water bottle far more often than I normally would. If you are drinking tap water - sometimes there can be some "interesting" tastes - even if it is filtered. The strength of the "Crystallized Lemon Substitute" can certainly make water more drinkable.
Ingredients
I was expecting to see some of the usual suspects - such as Aspartame, or Splenda, or Ace-K - however there are no artificial sweeteners - just some sweet and sour ingredients - in very small amounts:
Citric Acid, Lactose, Lime Juice, Lime Oil, Maltodextrin, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C).
0 Calories, 0g Carbohydrates
(I suspect the carb value is somewhere between 0 and 0.5g)
What's with the lactose and maltodextrin?
According to the site: "Maltodextrin and lactose have no taste or aroma and are used as all-natural bulking ingredients, which aid in the flowability..."
What else?
Some people seem to use the lemon and lime substitutes for all sorts of things (facial scrubs?). Watch this space for some further experimentation.
True Lemon currently offer a free sample. See what you think.
I was always told that lactose and maltodextrin were forms of sugar.
I happen to love water. That's all I drink except for coffee in the morning.
ReplyWouldn't it be easier (and healthier) just to throw some lemon slices in your water??
ReplyDoes it make the water taste sweet? Or just lemony? If if just makes it taste lemony, I think I'd rather just buy a few lemons, slice them up, and put those in my water. But for convenience, this True Lemon stuff might be kind of neat.
ReplyIt is just lemony with no sweetness I can detect. It is convenient and handy when you don't have lemons.
ReplyYeah well I don't think I'd be drinking Corona with a sachet of True Lemon shoved into the bottle... But... limes (and to some degree lemons) are not always accessible or affordable (at least where I live).
ReplyI think it's REALLY great how alot of companies only offer free samples to the US states! I love it! I mean, c'mon people, how much extra can it REALLY cost to ship a little packet to Canada? Its a big turnoff from products. This is probabaly a great item, but I'll probably never try it now.
ReplyHello:
I hope this is not some huge faux pas but I am happy to read everyone's comments. I also wanted to let the last post know that we do send samples to Canada. Please send your name and address to customercare@truelemon.com and we will send you samples. (Right now we have very little distribution in Canada so if you like the product you can purchase it online through our website at www.truelemon.com.)
Sincerely,
Heidi Carney

To respond to an earlier comment, lactose is the sugar that naturally occurs in milk products.
However, there does not seem to be very much in True Lemon. I am VERY lactose intolerant (no dairy, no cheese, no nothing!) and adding this to my water doesn't seem to affect me.
It's great to be able to keep this in my desk drawer for the afternoons when I feel like I need more hydration but am totally bored of plain water.

ReplyThanks so much for clarifying that. For the first time, someone actually responded to a commnet like that! I love that kind f great service. Thanks for your help, I will email for some samples.

I have tried True Lemon and it's okay, but if your craving for variety and you want to get all your water in for the day, you should try Water Sensations. It's a not powder. It's a clear liquid flavor (6 yummy flavors) and it also comes in little packets, so it's really convenient to take anywhere.
ReplyI guess the big difference is that Water Sensations contains artificial sweeteners (Sucralose/Splenda)...
ReplyI tried Water Sensations and did not really enjoy it. The liquid packets were messy and the flavor was so so. There are so many sweetened products out there, especially with artificial sweeteners. I like the idea of a all natural non-sweet item that I can add to my water. Thanks, can't wait to try True Lemon. I just signed-up for a free sample at the website.
ReplyWell I have been a faithfull user of True Lemon since I found it on the shelves last year. I don't drink carbenated drinks and I go no where near the artificial sweetners. I have always been a water drinker but there is so much clorine in water that the lemon hides it. At home I can cut a piece of lemon but in my car or at work True Lemon packets are very convinent. I find myself on this site because I havn't been able to find the product in the stores and I'm running low. So I'm trying to find out where to get it.

Linda, check out this page at True Lemon - you can find a store based on zip code, or order directly from the site.
ReplyI like the lemon and the lime flavors a lot. I especially love the fact that there is no sugar or artifical sweetners but I guess I'm greedy, couldn't you guys come up with at least a few more fruit flavors. Then maybe offer a variety pack of those flavors.
ReplyAs a matter of fact, True Lemon will be coming out very soon with another flavor. I believe that it is True Orange. In there recent newsletter, they've asked people to make recommendations for other flavors they'd like to see produced.
ReplyI was excited to try this product at first but the powder in the packets was very clumpy and I couldn't even scrape it out to put it in my bottled water. It also smelled really strange so I think I'll stick to buying fresh lemons. Seems like a good idea-I'm sure that's not how it is supposed to come out-I was expecting more of a powder...maybe they have quality control issues?
ReplyJess,
Give True Lemon a call and tell them you had this problem. I am sure they will help and send you a new box. They have great customer service. It is possible that something could have happend during shipping to the stores or the product was mis-handled at the grocery store. The boxes I buy are always great and the powder is free flowing. Their toll-free number is on their website www.truelemon.com
ReplyTrue Lemon is fantastic! I love love love it! It taste just like adding fresh lemon to your water and 100% all natural with no sweeteners. Thanks for sharing this product information with me.

ReplyI love True Lemon. I got hooked on it through my husbands work. It's convenient and has a wonderful taste. Yes, when it gets a little old it can be clumpy and they need to know that. But it still taste's good. I've been using it now for 3 or 4 years and carry it in my car and in my purse. I'm seldom without it and soon plan on taking it to Costa Rica with me. My grandchildren love it also and ask me for it in their water all the time. What can I say, we are sold on it. Send me more True Lemon, Please!!!!!
ReplyI like True Lemon a lot and use it every day in my water. I have bought some that were clumpy and wasn't in a powder form when I went to use it, so I wrote to the company and was pleasantly surprised they sent a free box, along with coupons for several more free boxes. I think that when it is clumpy, it is because the box is old. I can't wait to try True Orange.
ReplyI assumed it to be TRUE lemon. Not so. Lemon juice is the third largest amount. When I added it to 9 ounces of water, it had the hint of a citrus taste but not of a lemon aide-type drink with sugar added. The bottled Real Lemon is much better but still not equivelant to fresh sqeezed lemon.
ReplySorry but I just don't understand why you would think it would taste like a lemonade. The packet and box clearly say there is no sweetener whatsoever. I personally like having the option of having a clean lemon taste over the brands that insist on adding artificial stuff.
ReplyMy son & I love to use True Lemon in tuna and chicken salad as well as on fresh vegetable salads. It is very convenient to keep on hand for use when I don't have fresh lemons, which is too often. I've even sprinkled it on fish.
Unfortunately, I can't find the shakers in stores anymore so I order it online. This is a wonderful product and I hope they NEVER stop making it.
ReplyHi I tried to order samples, and was told that samples couldn't be sent to Canada...so I sent an email voicing my disappointment. I received a very nice reply telling that I could receive samples, with directions as to how to obtain them. I followed the directions and ordered the samples. Today, I received another email telling me that I have to confirm my email address by following the link on the page...the link isn't working...what do I do now? Truelemon really sounds good, and I would really like to get away from the aspartame I'm consuming with crystal lite.
ReplyHi it's me again, I tried the link again today, and it seemed to work this time. I'm looking forward to trying the samples, hopefully they will arrive soon.
ReplyI never ever drink water. I can't stand it. My cousin sent me True Lemon a week ago and I have to tell you honestly it has changed my life. Not to get dramatic here, but I am now drink 5 -- 17oz bottles of water a day. I was lucky if I ever even drank one! My skin is better, I am not bloated anymore.I can't believe the difference. I have more energy. I am not making any of this up. I must have been dehydrated my whole life! If you are a water hater like me, try this I promise it will make all the difference!
ReplyI also never drink water. Pretty bad, considering I work in the Health and Fitness industry... I just hate the taste! Since I have been using TrueLemon, I drink about 100 ounces a day and I feel so much better! Thank you thank you thank you TrueLemon for making a product that gives my water a better flavor without loading me down with artificial sweeteners. Since the taste is so light, I never get sick of it. Convenient, too!!
