Porridge is Hot
In amongst all the junk food hype, oats are steadily becoming popular. BBC UK reports that sales of porridge and oatmeal have nearly doubled in the last 5 years. That is a huge increase.
"The success of porridge is almost entirely due to its convenience and its healthy positioning," said Mintel's senior market analyst Julie Sloan. She said porridge's popularity would continue and it was challenging more adventurous breakfast cereals.
Despite extensive advertising of cold cereals (on TV) - the cold cereal market grew by just 13% in the same period.
It's an oat revival.

Great news cause I luv oatmeal!
ReplyWell, if it grows in popularity, it could also increase in price. Anyway, getting them in bulk at a cereal market is cheaper than buying those teeny-weeny boxes.
ReplyThe key is getting your children used to them at a early
Replyage. I feed oatmeal to my son and he loves it!
Oatmeal is great. I never tire of it! I never buy the brand name. I buy Great Value, which to the best of my knowledge must belong to Wal-Mart, as that's the only place I ever see that brand for sale.
Sometimes I drop a tablespoon of diet grape jelly in it just for a change. I'm glad I like it so well, 'cause it's so good for me.
ReplyVern, Great Value is one of the Wal-mart brands indeed. You're right.
Now I gotta try it with grape jelly. I always make it with fat-free milk and sprinkle cinammon in it, then I chop a banana or an apple, or use raisins if I'm out of fresh fruit.
ReplyOatmeal is awesome. I eat it almost every day for breakfast...a habit I picked up from my dad. It's cheap as all get-out and it's healthy too. I'm glad it's becoming more popular.
ReplyOatmeal made with with a couple of drops of maple extract is also very tasty! Just add it to the water.
ReplyAll grain products took a hit during the so called low carb craze. Those companies are now spending billions marketing themselves as diets. I'm not an oatmeal fan.
Cereals hot or cold usually are sweetened. Appealing to our sweet tooths sells.
ReplyI add ground flaxseed to my oatmeal for added protein and Omega-3's. It gives it a great mutty flavor, as well.

Ripley I've made it with sugar-free maple syrup (made with Splenda, and if someone is gonna tell me it is gonna kill me, you can save your fingers: I've been to Dr. Mercola's website), and it is very tasty, but there isn't maple extract on sale here. I should try to get it from the same place I get the syrups.
I like almond extract sometimes instead of cinammon.
ReplyI love my steel cut oats in the morning. I too add flax to my cereal but in the form of flaxmeal.
My local grocery, Publix, carries this brand, Bob's Red Mill ( http://www.bobsredmill.com ) for both...it's much cheaper than some of the tin can varieties.
Replyterrific news. cooked with soy-milk for the phyto-oestrogens, adding either a mashed banana or some berries, protein powder, and "drowned" in cinnamon. Yummy
ReplyFor once I was ahead of the trend! My breakfast every day is a half cup (dry) Bob's Red Mill Rolled Oats (made with water), one cup of frozen wild blueberries, two T. slivered almonds, and a splash of skim milk. Keeps me going through lunchtime.
ReplyWell, let's don't wax too enthusiastic about grains. They ALL do elevate insulin levels to unacceptable levels and carry fat into our cells.
Replyoatmeal is pretty much amazing. i found that adding a spoonful of peanut butter makes for a delectable bowl of oatmeal, morning noon or night :)
ReplyWhilst on a low income I ate porridge as it was cheap and filling I lost weight which I needed to five stones in all and also have found that porridge is great for the libido too
