Lynda...the machines you're referring to are just called "roller massagers". Most of them were the barrel-type with 16 hardwood knobby rollers and came in a couple different options. The first and most common was the floor or "pony" model where the unit sat on the floor and in order to use it on your tummy, you would rest across it while on your knees, or would have to prop yourself up on it to work your butt.
The other, less-common type looked like a floor roller, but it was mounted to an adjustable frame and with a small servo motor, could be raised or lowered to the proper height for a standing user to just lean into it. A lot easier to use because it didn't require a lot of stooping or squating and you could adjust the height of the rollers for the application you needed. Very few of these exist anymore and you only pretty much find the Vitamaster or Walton floor roller massagers on places like eBay and Craigslist.
does anyone remember an excerise machine called a stoffer. my mother had one. there were two flat parts about 2' wide and 3' long with a smaller section in the center that moved, kinda shimmied. there were striups to put your feet in so your legs would stay stationary with the center moved your hips from side to side. i think to make your waist smaller. sounds wierd i know but my mother had one. it was pink vinyl.
I used to belong to Elaine Powers in Ohio back in the 70s and used the wooden drum roller machine. I hope there is someone out here that might still own this machine or can tell where I can purchase one. I would be eternally greatful.
I have been looking for one of those rollers forever with no luck. Do they even make them anymore? Do you still have yours and if so what condition is it in? Please get back to me and let me know.
Thanks
Marci
Shiela, they do work very well for lots of purposes other than weight loss. If you want to smooth out a couple bulges, this is your machine. If you're trying to drop 30 pounds, it's helpful, but not going to be the reason for your weight loss.
I have had my machine for many years now and still use it fairly regularly. I remember the adjustable roller machine DH was talking about above. They had one (maybe two or three?) at the Venus DeMilo salon back in 1979 in Oregon.
Hi Carla, can you let me know where the sites are where I can find one of the roller massagers. I would love to have one. I agree with Lisa "they are great at losening tight muscles and improving circulation"

Which I was about to clean up (dust off) and put up for sale but could not think of what it was called then I found this site. It is a Sears and Roebucks model. It has 2 extra belts. Email me at homecareaide@buffalo.com if anyone is interested. No pics yet but should have them in the next couple of days.

I have one of the belt massagers. It is vintage.(And it works!!) If you are interested or want pics...Let me know. My Email is Mallory058@yahoo.com...
Hi again, just curious as to the consensus on this board about the effectiveness of the two different machines discussed here. Of those who have used the two, which is better? The belt massager or the roller machine? I have a belt and still love it and use it regularly, but I don't know much about the rollers. Is one better than the other for wt. loss or exercise?
I would love to find one of those roller machine with the dowls that roll arround and you sit front or back or side and it does help break the fat down. I used one at a Gloria Marhalls back in the 70's. If anyone has any info, please e-mail me at donaldstumpy@aol.com.
Thanks in advance for any help. Esther
In response to Carrie's question...both are great, but I think the belt is far more comfortable and easier to use. Rollers hurt like hell when they hit something other than a really fleshy part, but otherwise, I think they're great! I just prefer the belt massager! Keep using yours :)
I'm new to this forum so forgive me if my request isn't "kosher" but due to so much interest in the "roller machines" why not simply list the websites or sources for them within your comments instead of asking for private email address?
I HAVE A VIBRATING BELT EXERCISER....GREAT SHAPE!!!!!! MY GRANDFATHER STORED THIS FOR YEARS IN HIS BASEMENT. I HAVE SEVERAL PICTURES! IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED PLEASE EMAIL ME AND I WILL RETURN EMAIL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE...Thank you, Joel!

Hi, If you have a belt vibrating machine please email me at kajt4@yahoo.comReply

Eskasizer was the name of the one my mother had.
Some of them had two belts.
My mother used this machine at Elaine Powers, she still thinks it works. I am now looking for it. I like it too as a kid. It felt like it went 100 miles an hour.I would like to buy one for $50.00. lol
I just bought one of them jiggling belt things tonight. How and where? I ran a free ad on craigslist.com Just find your closest big city and put an ad in the wanted section. Wow, the same day I got a responce. Paid 50 bux.
I love it. I will use it after my treadmill workout. Sure got my blood moving. Good luck
There are always tons of people who drop by this site looking for belt massagers and there are two machines on eBay right now!
Of those who used these things in old health clubs and salons, how many did they typically have? I only remember a place in California that had four belt massagers and two of the roller machines with adjustable height and another three of the floor models. There was always a wait to use a belt, and typically you were limited to only 10 minutes at a time.
I work for a morning news program looking to investigate weight loss pills, gadgets, etc. We are doing a segment Monday 11/19 and would love someone to try a body wrap to see if it works. The company claims a 90% success rate and helps people lose inches within minutes... (Clearly seems too good to be true, which is why we want to test it...)
Thanks. You can reach me at morning_show@hotmail.com with any questions, etc etc.
the staff wore them. my mother actually managed a number of these salons in the mid 1970s. tacoma seattle area. i dont remember the navy color. i remember the purple ones. she had some canary yellow one i think was used for a promotion thing. no matter what you might think about the salon it did generate more awareness for health. let me tell you it was fun times playing on all those machines when i visited my mother at work. does anyone know when they phased out?
Vicki said: I recently purchased a Elaine Powers leotard at a flea market. It is navy blue and has white trim around the collar. It has Elaine Powers and the logo in white letters around the neck area. Does anyone know if this is a collectors item. Also who wore them the staff or clients?[...]
i just spoke to my mother she claims that the leotards actually could have been worn by clients as well. they didnt have to though. she thought that maybe different stores had different colors. they started with the maroon/purple color.as far as the logo goes they werent on the leotards when she worked for them. the logo is the apple with a bite gone yes? also in response to the comment about the weight being anounced if they didnt loose anything, she said they didnt anounce it alloud.
I have one of the vita master roller massagers. Great for foot massage, but not practical for a living room. Way to big and bulky not to mention very dangerous for little kids to get fingers in if it got turned on. The only way to describe it resembles a barrel that has a bunch of spinning rods that spin also as the whole thing spins if that makes any sense. Brand name is vita master
I'd like to find a barrel-roller massager, any brand. The ones I know of are Vita Master and Walton, but there's another brand out there that is better, and I don't know what it is. I used one in an exercise club years ago, and it sat right on the floor, not up on a "cabinet" like the Vita Master and Walton units I've seen pictures of. It was *wonderful* - you can sit on the floor and lean against it for a great upper back massage, straddle it for an inner thigh massage, or sit on it (without putting your weight on it!) for a butt and upper thigh massage, and lots more. Can anyone help?
Hi, I have a vintage extremely hard to find commercial style wooden roller massager that sits on the floor and you straddle it type thing that works perfect. It was used in the european health spa before it closed down and we bought it from that. It has a metal plate on the front describing the model as "since 1893 Mac Levy Exercise and Reducing Equipment" along with a serial number. Email me at thefurloft@shaw.ca if anyone is interested. It is very heavy duty, strong and runs fine. I am unsure how to ship it, a wooden crate perhaps and we are probably going to list it on ebay.
I'm looking for a massage roller machine, I read your comments dated April 2008. Do you still have the machine available? I can be reached at wedobeefright@ca.rr.com
I bought one today at Goodwill. It's made by Sears. I got it for only 3.75. I cleaned it up and it works good. I'm trying to find out what they are worth.
I would like a newer machine that's like the Elaine Powers Vibrating Machine for the Stomach. I've see some cheap vibrating belts. Has anyone used any of them (like the As Seen On Tv) and what's your opinion on things like these?
I am looking to buy an old time or up to date vibrating belt machines that used to be popular back in the 60's and 70's. Like the picture on this blog page. please contact me ar : kisha.carter@hcahealthcare.com
Hi, we have both the belt machine and the thigh roller machine. If interested in making an offer please call 530-272-7643 before 9pm CA time. or email Julia at yosemite_3@yahoo.com
Will have photos to email on request.
Will go on CA Craigs List on Feb. 25, 2008
We have both the roller massager and the vibrating belt machine that
your chats sounded like you were interested in purchasing.
Here's the scoop:
Previously owned by a nurse, not brand new, but not in less than really good condition.
Both units work at this very moment, just ask my hip bones : )
Will send photos on request, right now I need to reduce their size, the files are huge.
Please email us an offer and accept that the buyer pays the shipping.
I have measured and weighed the items and here is the information if you want to go to get a shipping quote:
Roller machine
45 lbs raw weight, add 3 for packaging materials and carton
24 x 20 x 12 dimensions
Belt vibrator (we will loosen two hex bolts to lay the head flat against the foot platform to make is smaller and more
manageable for shipping)
52 lbs. raw weight, ditto on packaging
16 x 42 x 18 dimensions
do you still have the vibrating belt? I'm not clear on what the rolling thing is that people have mentioned on this site.
Please let me know if you still have the vib. machine,
thanks so much,
diana

I worked for Elaine Powers for 5 years as a fitness instructor and then went on to another gym a few years later - quit in 1999 and have packed on the pounds.
I remember losing 30 lbs. quickly using the Elaine Powers program and their silly little food list, which had smiley or sad faces for how you did each day. I wrote down everything I ate on it and it really worked. Anyone have a copy of that old food list? (I know I can write anywhere but there was something "magical" about that food list:-)
I am cleaning out my Grandmothers house and have one of these old vibrating belt machines, it is in good shape, if anyone is interested in it I will be happy to send a bunch of pictures
