Special K Diet: Cereal for Weight Loss?

Over the last few months there has been a lot of cereal promotion going on. Kelloggs' Special K brand have been promoting their very own Special K Diet Challenge (for a number of years now). Not to be outdone, Kraft have "lose 10 pounds" emblazoned on virtually the entire line of "Post" brand cereals (called Eat 2 Lose 10)

Both cereal "diets" are bold and upfront with their claims: "Lose up to 6 pounds in 2 weeks!" shouts Special K. Is this for real? Is it valid?

The Special K Diet

• Eat a serving of Kellogg's® Special K®, Special K® Red Berries, Special K® Vanilla Almond, Special K® Fruit & Yogurt or Special K® Low Carb Lifestyle Protein Plus cereal with 2/3 cup skim milk and fruit for two meals a day.
• Eat your third meal as you normally do.
• For snacks, choose from fresh fruits and vegetables or a Special K® Bar.
• Consume beverages as you normally do.

Special K claim that the diet is "based on valid research conducted at leading universities". In typical hard-sell fashion, they fail to provide the reference or provide a link to the "valid research". After some digging, I found the aforementioned study.

Yes - People Lost Weight
It made interesting reading, and effectively backed up some of the claims from Special K. According to my reading, the mean weight loss was less than 2 kg (4.4 pounds) in the 2 week period.

A basic low fat diet
So what's the magic? There is no magic. The women in the study ate less than they normally did. According to the study, the women in the Special K group were eating about 2200 kcals per day. When they started substituting the cereal meals they dropped daily intake by about 640 kcals per day. Furthermore, a lot of those calories were from fat (~39 grams or 351 kcals).

Good or What?
Personally I think incorporating some cereals into your diet can be good - but there are some caveats here:
Satiety - From experience, I've noticed that wolfing down a bowl of cereal doesn't always curb the hunger pangs. However having a bit more protein in the mix does keep the pangs at bay.
Nutrition - The simple truth is - Special K is better than what most people eat, but it still contains such gems as High Fructose Corn Syrup. Serving for serving, it has less potassium and fiber than oats, and more sugar. Compare here and here.

The Claim

"Lose 6 Pounds in 2 Weeks"

The Interpretation
"If you currently have a poor diet, but substitute it with our cereal - you may lose 4.4 pounds over the first two weeks. You will be probably feel very hungry while restricting your calories, and will may find eating cereal for dinner or lunch to be untenable after a while. Boredom could well set in. History shows that a low-fat, higher-carb diet can work, but in the long run it may backfire".

That said - you could do a lot worse than eating cereal, skim milk, and fruit - it's a lot healthier than the average American meal...

I love special K cereal but found it boring and I was hungry, I did it for a week and my goal is 7lbs. If your body is overly hungry, it is being deprived in a very bad way.

Instead what I did and am losing weight (1lb weekly) is the most common sense thing, cut portions back and eating healther meals. I found on this diet (SK) that it was not sustaining me and I actually felt weak.

Going forward, in the morning I have my cereal, Special K or Honey Bunches of Oats. Lunch, I will have a sandwich with wheat bread and deli cut chicken/turkey from the lunchmeat isle at the grocery store. Replacing mayo with mustard. I will also at times for lunch have 1 slice wheat bread, cut up a hard boiled egg. Also, Campbell's soup has good soups that are more sustaining than cereal. I have found that these have no more calories than cereal and are more sustaining and healthy, except for the egg if you have high cholesterol and you have to watch the sodium on the soup.

Dinner time, I bought myself the pack of portioned chicken breast from Perdu which is low in fat and calories. I also buy the Steam Fresh vegetables, using about a cup portion of the veggies and container the rest. When I really crave pizza, I get Lean Cuisine pizza's, they are good and filling and not over over 350 calories. Actual pizza, you can only have 1 piece on a diet but it is very greasy.

I do not limit myself to these but various things can be mix matched to create delicious meals that are lower in calories, if you want to take the time.

I think we all want a quick fix, if we just eat cereal, we will loose a quick 6lbs. Don't forget, in the beginning of most diets, that 4-5lbs is water weight and not fat. True weight loss takes time. It did not get there overnight and it won't go away overnight. It takes dedication, time and patience.
Once the weight is off, you don't go back to the same ways that put you in that position. If you ask most people that have had a substantial weight loss why they have gained that weight back, it is always the case, over eating again and again unless they have a medical condition.
People become comfortable with their new weight loss and take it for granted and think they can start eating again and control it when it gets out of control.
If your 20, one thing, over 30, watch, watch and more watch your eating habits. People that keep the weight off, exercise and do not eat for two at one sitting.

Also, the problem with cereal dieting is once you loose the weight, the chemical balance in your body has been changed and once you start eating "real" food in place of the ceral, it sends your body into shock and your body needs to learn how to process these foods again and it views it at too much and stores as fat.
Also, eating out, food at restaurants are loaded with extra calories and junk.

People wanting to loose more than 10 lbs. should change their eating habtis and avoid ceral diets. People that are extremely over weight should avoid cereal diets altogether because it is unrealistic in reaching significant weight loss because it is not healthy.

God Bless

THE SPECIAL K DIET IS THE WAYYYY TOO GOO. NO JOKE I LITERALLY LOST 4 POUNDS IN 5 DAYS. I USUALLY JUST EAT A BOWL OF SPECIAL K FOR BREAKFAST, THEN 2 HOURS LATER I WOULD EAT A LIGHT SNACK MAYBE SOME FRUIT OF SORT. 2 HOURS PAST AND I EAT ANOTHER SMALL MEAL,NOT HEAVY. A SMOOTHIE OR SO. THE POINT WELL BEING IS THAT I EAT BASICALLY 6 MEALS A DAY WITHOUT GETTING HUNGRY AND THAT IS WHAT I CALL A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. I ALSO EXERCISE FROM 25 MIN TO AN HOUR A DAY, DEPENDING ON HOW BUSY I GET.

P.S. KEEP AWAY FROM JUNK FOODS SUCH AS CHIPS & CANDY, BUT HAVING A BAR OF CANDY WON'T KILL YA:) JUST MAKE SURE YOU WORK IT OFF LATER ON DURING THE DAY.

Hello everybody! I have also been reading everybody's comments and I'm wondering. I have tried a few things to lose to 15 pounds. But so far nothing works. I weight 140 and i am 5'4. I am considering the Special K diet. But is it really going to work for me. I know everybody is different thats why I am wondering. Right now I eat 3 meals a day. I eat a cup of fruit or a cup of yogart. Then I don't eat small portions for lunch and dinner.

my problem is even after eating a whole bowl of cereal for lunch or dinner I'm still hungry and craving for carbs (breads more specifically). I have to have a sandwich of some sort in order to feel full. I'm exercising 4 times a week for half hour. I need to loose 5-8 pounds and my belly fat. Any tips?

I did the special K diet and it worked for me. I lost 9 pounds in 3 weeks of the diet. I also cut out sodas while on the diet. The key to making this diet work is to utilize the snacks you are allowed to have. Special K bars are surprisingly filling... and by all means, eat one when you start to feel hungry but it's not meal time. Also, gradually you find it easier to go meal to meal with fewer snacks inbetween. I did and I lost 9 pounds. The weight stayed off for a while until I started eating very unhealthily again about 3 months later.

I didn't think I could do this diet because Special K keeps me full for maybe an hour and then my stomach's growling again. There's not enough protein and fiber in the original. I picked up a box of the Special K Protein Plus, and it's got tons of protein and fiber in it, and one bowl kept me full for about 3.5 hours. There's also less carbs, so that's a plus. The PP box is smaller and it may be a little more pricey, I'm not sure, but I def think it's better than the original. I just started 2 days ago, so we'll see how it goes!

I don't see how people are posting negative comments saying this diet is a joke. Everyones body reacts differently, so if the diet didn't work fro you, that dosn't prevent it from working for the next person. I am going to start this diet tonight. I don't anticipate on losing alot of weight. 5 - 10 pounds at the most. I am optimistic, and I'm sure with the reccommended 2 bowls a day, fruits, vegetables, and some excercise I can reach my goal. =)

I just started the Special K diet, and I like it a lot. They just came out with new waffels. I am finding it very easy to eat the waffles or cereal for breakfast, a meal bar for lunch, and a well balanced dinner. They say you can eat whatever you want for dinner, but I still try to eat healthy so I can lose more weight.
This diet can be stupid depending on how you look at it. If you do this for two weeks, and then expect to start eating your old junk again your going to gain weight AND lower your basal metabolic rate, which will make it harder for you to lose weight next time you try. If you are like me and you are using this diet to help you get started losing weight, then you will lose weight and learn to change your eating habits. IF I get sick of the bars for lunch or the cereal for breakfast, I will just switch to another healthy ceral and eat a very healthy small portion lunch.. Thats really all their is too it. I am using Special K to get me started and it's working great :-D I am also takin a multivitamin and fish oil every morning.

K so Im 15 5'5" and currently 128. Ive lost about 10 pounds doing my own little diet. So I was 126 and gained 2. I really really wanna lose 6-8ish pounds by may cuz I was gonna wear my cute ripped jeans(theyre a little tight) to a concert. So...Ive decided to try this. I also run 5 miles a day and was planning to do this on special k as well. I know Id only be eating about 1100 calories which is about 100 calories less than what I was eating.

Although the average person should eat roughly 1300 calories a day to survive, you are below average weight-wise. You MAY be okay only eating 1100 calories a day, but you should definitely take a women's vitamin each day to make sure you are still getting the proper nutrients. After you run, MAKE SURE you drink plenty of water. Not only will it keep you hydrated, but muscles need water to heal properly, and your muscles will probably heal faster, making you tone up faster.

I love this diet. The cereal portion is a little more than the average cereal at 3/4 cup instead of 1/2 cup. The cereal fills me up! I usually feel so full before I finish the bowl, especially if I pair it with fruit. I have one of their protein meal bars for lunch and two of the snack bars in between breakfast and lunch, then between lunch and dinner. I drink the protein water as well, and I stay full all day long. Dinner is whatever I choose, and that has been like a lean meat and vegetables. I haven't had fast food in weeks and I feel so healthy. I won't stay on this forever, but it is a great way to get some results to help me continue to do what I need to do to lose more weight.

I've read a lot of posts of people saying this won't work for various reasons...and I know it's a marketing ploy, but I'm going to go for it anyway. I am not necessarily starting this diet because I want to lose weight, I want to lead a healthier lifestyle, and if that means I eat two meals of cereal for a month or two, I'm cool with that. Everyone keeps saying they'll get sick of it...but as a college student, I could pretty much live off cereal; I love Special K! Having so little time between classes and everything, it is hard for me to make oatmeal (unless it's instant oatmeal, which isn't really healthy anyway) or cut up fruit to put in a whole-grain cereal, so this will have to do for now. I think, though, that working out on a regular basis (which i do) and eating two bowls of cereal and fruit for snacks and a healthy dinner won't bother me until the end of the semester when I can go home and have more access to healthy (and still easy) foods.

Eat things like a serving of unsalted nuts after you work out. If you drink a glass of water with them(which you should after a workout anyway) and don't wolf them down, they actually fill you up pretty well. Plus they will give you protein and help you build muscle. =)

Sometimes, they even make me feel like I ate too much, even if I only ate one serving.

BE WARY!!! -
I have just finished 3 weeks on the special K diet with a bowl for brekkie, one for lunch, and a proper dinner. I am slightly overweight with a BMI of 26.7. Yet really feel yuk after doing this diet! The last few days I actually put weight on as I was really badly constipated! It is a man made food and my body has had a hell of a time trying to break down the rough flakes!
Plus I felt dizzy and light headed, and have come out in a really bad outbreak of spots on my chin - which must be the chemicals and additives from its ingredients!
In all I have not lost that much weight - going to the gym has toned me up - I lost the most amount of weight this morning when the laxatives I took before bed worked (sorry to be so graphic!)
Overall this diet has not worked for me - I was hoping it would be the cheaper way to diet - but it has made me realise that fresh fruit, veg, chicken , and fish, nuts, pulses, and seeds - combined with the gym - Are the only way forward when it comes to losing weight!
Many thanks
Sarx

I'm a female and I want to join the army. I need to lose 10 lbs, so I have been doing cardio and taking the Special K challenge. It seems to be working. I have been doing this for 1 week now and I have lost about 4 lbs. I also cut out all soda, diet or regular, all fruit drinks, and all alcohol. I only drink milk, water, and a cup or two of coffee (with only 1 tbsp sugar)each morning.

I have been sticking to the serving size, and using a half cup of whole milk in my cereal instead of the skim it says to. I seem to get hungry only when it is meal time, or after I work out. Then I eat a 100 calorie pack or something.

You NEED roughly at LEAST 1300 calories everyday just to keep your body out of starvation mode. If you eat only 700-1000 calories a day, Your metabolism will slow down as much as possible and save every precious calorie as fat.

I have actually have trouble eating enough calories throughout the day. I eat a serving of unsalted peanuts or something when I see that my calorie count is too low. I have not cut out indulgent items out of my diet completely. In fact, I had a Drumstick Ice Cream cone last night(190 calories).

But hey, everyone is different.

I have also been keeping a food diary. I write down everything I eat and the calorie count. Since I eat a normal dinner with my finance, I try to guess how many calories dinner was. I usually guess about 300-800 depending on what we eat. (Grilled chicken one night vs. pancakes and bacon the next)

I am also taking a Women's One a Day vitamin, which I recommend women take regardless of if they are dieting or not.

So whether or not I am losing weight because of the Special K diet or not, I think the most important thing is you have to have motivation.

I want to be in the army more than anything, and this is what I have to do to be there.

Good Luck! =D

Well so far I started the cereal diet not for the DIET purpose, I did it because like its claimed compared to the normal american diet its healthier. I came to the USA 5 years ago, and in those 5 years I gained about 20lbs and Im not HUGELY over weight Im still in my normal weight for my height. But when you are 120 and turn 140 in a period of 5 years you have to consider what has changed. I notice that all that really changed was the poor eating habits of the american diet! I remember back at home I used to eat in a fast food 1 a week and only occasionally. Fast food was like OMG I can't believe Im eating at Mickey Ds for a change and the meals used to be small nuggets and stuff like that. I always had a home cooked normal meal with the family and lunch wasn't a full meal like they do here. I found the problem from the 20lbs gain. I was relaying in fast foods everyday for lunch and dinner sometimes. Skipped breakfast and I even tried the frozen lean cuisine meals for lunch to stop spending money on lunching out.

The truth on the cereal, for me implies to drink MILK which I don't like and I will personally not purchase if it wasn't for the cereal. I like having breakfast and lunch as cereal keeps me light during the day and I don't feel sleepy at work over a heavy breakfast or a heavy lunch. I vary not always for lunch I take it as dinner sometimes due to the fact that lets face it who has dinner before 7pm all the time! Life is hectic and sometimes my dinner its at 9pm so cereal its great those days.

So far after a week of special K 2 times a day I can see my face looking less chunky! Yeap my face its what normally shows Im loosing weight. I'm not expecting to drop tons of pant sizes and to look awesomely good. But I feel great knowing that I'm drinking milk and eating fruit which I normally dont do on daily basis.

With the cost of food products these days going sky high Special K diet is the way to go in saving money at the grocery store. The way to do it is great when they have buy one get one free and you save so much. In the average week I will spend 30 on a week supply of food. Now with special K I go to the store buy milk, bananas and cereal and Im all set on my shopping list. I eat crackers wheat and fibers if I want a snack. Keeps me full! Nothing sugary because I don't crave the sweets anymore.

If you read this you may understand that if you want to do it because of other reasons then yeah it works. Now if you want to do it as a lifetime method to lose weight it wont if you like to eat! My sister joined Jenny Craig I think is supper Expensive but for her lifestyle and eating habits it works and she has lost a lot of weight. I personally dont like Jenny cause once you stop their food you gain weight!

With special K you teach your stomach to receive less food and get satisfy with small portions. For me it works!

I am trying this diet, and it's GREAT!
Whenever I get hungry in between meals, I eat an apple, an orange, or a banana.
The protein drinks are REALLY tasty, too.
I eat the cereal for breakfast, and lunch. I keep fruit with me at nearly all times.
Then I eat my normal dinner. I'm eating all the food groups, and I have a lot of energy.I feel AMAZING!!!!!!!

It's "lose" weight people, not "loose" weight.

Anyhow. Again I am going to say this about those of you who have decided that it's ok to use this as an excuse to eat a couple of bowls of cereal and a bar every day:

This is starvation plan. You cannot maintain this "diet" without making yourself sick. You should not lose more than 1-2 pounds a week. And if you are more motivated by vanity than by health and common sense, then consider this: once you stop this diet and go back to "regular" eating, then you will gain the weight back. If you don't believe that then you don't know anything about human metabolism.

If you want to lose weight by eating cereal a couple of times a day, go for it, as long as you are getting enough nutrition from fruits, veg, etc daily. But you owe yourself at least 15 minutes in the cereal aisle to check out the nutritional labels on various cereals, and I'm sure you will find PLENTY that has more nutritional value and less sugar than special k or any of its spawn.

Katie, I know what you mean about needing to find something easy at college, but you do need to get that fruit in somewhere. There is PLAIN instant oatmeal that's pretty decent for you; add in some raisins or dried berries. Or find something like a museli that you can just pour milk or hot water on that already has some nuts (protein! good fat! yay!) and dried fruit (fruit! yay!) Bob's Red Mills Organic Museli is a good choice. Scoop some yogurt on top.

If you want to be healthy slim person for life, then look for REAL food, not processed, and have a PLAN you can stick with for life, not a DIET. It's not as exciting or dramatic or easy, but it's what works over time.

Kaitlyn

if people do it right then they ARE NOT STARVING
you need to stop saying that and find something betetr to do with your time. =] thanks

And you need to learn to read. I never, ever said people who followed this correctly were starving themselves. As I CLEARLY stated, my comments were directed to people who are using the diet as an excuse to eat very little, not to people who were following it properly. If you take the time to look over the pages of postings about what some people are doing, you will find many (young) girls trying to live on the calories provided by a couple of bowls of cereal and a special k bar or two. They list their food for a day and there is no protein source, no fruits, no vegetables, no healthy fats. Some people are quite pleased that they are losing more than 3 pounds a week.

I also said that I agree that you could lose weight in an appropriate way if you follow the diet correctly. However, I pointed out that for the most part Special K is basically a source of empty processed carbohydrates. Don't believe me? Check the nutrition label - for instance, there is no fibre. Where will you get your fibre from if this is all you eat? (and fibre can help you lose weight) There are some vitamins and minerals they've tossed in but less than what you'd get if you just took a good multivitamin every day. So my suggestion was that if you want to follow a diet where you rely heavily on cereal, you could find cereals that used whole grains, and that were not higher in calories but much better for you and have good results, but be healthier in the process. I have seen people get really good results eating high fibre cereals, but they also ate a nutritionally balanced diet as well.

So, sorry if reasonable advice and concern bothers you, but for the sake of the people who might do themselves some serious harm, I think it's worth saying.

If you are exercising with this diet which would be a good idea as you will obviously loose more weight and feel alot better in your self - also keeping busy will take your mind of food, even if its just a 15min walk everyday, also i find exercise videos are very good but a decent one, not one by some celebrity trying to make a bit of extra cash!

Do not measure your wieght loss by scales! as you all know muscle weighs more than fat therefore a better option would be to get some old jeans that dont quite fit anymore and set a goal to slim into them - replace the scales with the jeans and watch them become looser untill they eventualy fit ! :D

i thought this needed to be mentioned as some people sometimes forget this and when they jump on the scales at the end of the week and see no loss, then they are put off by the dieting, when in actual fact the diet is working =\

im starting the diet again on monday but with bran flake simply because i dont like the taste of special k =] also if you get sick of eating the same cereal, why not change to a different one?

i lost almost a stone last timne i dieted and this was all down to eating healty(NOT STARVING YOURSELF) and exercise.. its the only way if you want a permanent weight loss!

You need a really good support group. First of all you have to tell yourself....
IT'S NOT YOU. IT'S THE MORONS IN YOUR LIFE!
If you don't want to go out and talk to anyone, then try an online support group. theirs tons of them and their free. As far as your weight, if you don't like your weight then do something about it for YOURSELF. Not to keep someone in your life. Remember it's not all about the diet, it's about the exercise too. Good luck to you.

So, I started this diet today. I'm 18, 5'9", and weigh 245 lbs, so I know that I really need to do something, especially with diabetes running in my family. Diets are just so hard to stick with. I lost about 15 lbs when I went vegetarian. I kept trying to figure out how it was so easy to stick with vegetarianism, but so hard with diets. I realized though that vegetarianism is a lot more black and white. Diets are so hard, because you have to keep up with so many things to get them right. What I needed was a set out plan of what to eat. I figure with special K having such a variety, but still some degree of black and white, I can at least stick with it long enough to get healthier. I'm doing the cereal with light soymilk though, because, even though I'm not vegan, something about skim milk makes me die a little inside. I'm also going to make it a point to exercise daily for at least 30 minutes. I'll let everyone know if it works. :]

Dani, if your fizzy drinks have sugar in them, then it would be better to cut them out of your diet rather than starting to diet at your age.

You don't say what you weigh, or if you are actually overweight. If you aren't overweight, don't try to lose weight.

As for whether this diet would work for you - well, no reason why it won't, any diet should work to lose weight. The key to losing weight is very simple - you just have to take in less calories than you expend every day. There are better ways to do this though, than by eating processed carbs like special k. How about eating some unsweetened oatmeal and berries, something with some fiber?

I have done the Special K diet about two years ago and I did lose 5 lbs. And I'm considered overweight. I think I'll try it again. IF I can just go down two or three pant size I would be okay.

I'm 16 years old and have been on the special k diet for nearly 2 years i eat about 6 servings of it a day maybe even more lol and am never sick of it all in all i have lost 6 stone. so I think special k diet really does work and the best thing about it is that there are so many different types out there so i never get sick of it although i must say special k bliss chocolate and strawberry is my fave as i love chocolate and go through 3 boxes of it a week lol!
