Special K Diet: Cereal for Weight Loss?
Over the last few months there has been a lot of cereal promotion going on. Kelloggs' Special K brand have been promoting their very own Special K Diet Challenge (for a number of years now). Not to be outdone, Kraft have "lose 10 pounds" emblazoned on virtually the entire line of "Post" brand cereals (called Eat 2 Lose 10)
Both cereal "diets" are bold and upfront with their claims: "Lose up to 6 pounds in 2 weeks!" shouts Special K. Is this for real? Is it valid?
The Special K Diet
• Eat a serving of Kellogg's® Special K®, Special K® Red Berries, Special K® Vanilla Almond, Special K® Fruit & Yogurt or Special K® Low Carb Lifestyle Protein Plus cereal with 2/3 cup skim milk and fruit for two meals a day.
• Eat your third meal as you normally do.
• For snacks, choose from fresh fruits and vegetables or a Special K® Bar.
• Consume beverages as you normally do.

Special K claim that the diet is "based on valid research conducted at leading universities". In typical hard-sell fashion, they fail to provide the reference or provide a link to the "valid research". After some digging, I found the aforementioned study.
Yes - People Lost Weight
It made interesting reading, and effectively backed up some of the claims from Special K. According to my reading, the mean weight loss was less than 2 kg (4.4 pounds) in the 2 week period.
A basic low fat diet
So what's the magic? There is no magic. The women in the study ate less than they normally did. According to the study, the women in the Special K group were eating about 2200 kcals per day. When they started substituting the cereal meals they dropped daily intake by about 640 kcals per day. Furthermore, a lot of those calories were from fat (~39 grams or 351 kcals).
Good or What?
Personally I think incorporating some cereals into your diet can be good - but there are some caveats here:
Satiety - From experience, I've noticed that wolfing down a bowl of cereal doesn't always curb the hunger pangs. However having a bit more protein in the mix does keep the pangs at bay.
Nutrition - The simple truth is - Special K is better than what most people eat, but it still contains such gems as High Fructose Corn Syrup. Serving for serving, it has less potassium and fiber than oats, and more sugar. Compare here and here.
The Claim
"Lose 6 Pounds in 2 Weeks"
The Interpretation
"If you currently have a poor diet, but substitute it with our cereal - you may lose 4.4 pounds over the first two weeks. You will be probably feel very hungry while restricting your calories, and will may find eating cereal for dinner or lunch to be untenable after a while. Boredom could well set in. History shows that a low-fat, higher-carb diet can work, but in the long run it may backfire".
That said - you could do a lot worse than eating cereal, skim milk, and fruit - it's a lot healthier than the average American meal...
I lost a lot of weight in Highschool and then after having my son I gained at least 40 pounds of it back... its so miserable being FAT. Anyways I'm starting this diet at full course tomorrow. I started to slowly stop eating red meat and I'm staying away from sweets and I will excersize DAILY wish me luck I'll be back in a month to let you all know how it all went!
ReplyHi, well im a 316 pound 16 year old and my friend and i want to lose weight, were starting our diet on new years eve. we'll go exerecising at the YMCA 3x a week, and i'll do the special K diet, my wishful goal weight is 175, but not for a few years, my short goal is to lose 25 pounds by june, i hope this special k diet will work, maybe Ill lose more than 5 lb.s a month this way. Do you think this diet will work for me or not someone please help
ReplyI am at 102.
I don't want to be.
I am going to try the special k thing.
For the next two weeks I will have
breakfast- special k
dinner- whatever
((and no junk food)
Then when I go back to school I will take it for lunch as well.
Wish me luck!
ReplyI needed to lose 25 pounds a few years back and did it in about 2 months with the Richard Simmons Move, Groove and Lose program. What's really great about it is that you get a balance of all your major food groups which you really need to stay healthy. With that and working out 3 - 5 times a week it was a perfect combination. The first few weeks I lost 3-4 pounds a week. So if you have the will you can do it!
ReplyI'm beginning this diet tomorrow. I believe it is only intended to be used as a "jump start." Personally, I find it most convenient while running from school to the gym to work every day. Takes the work out of meal planning, packing, and shopping until I can refill my pantry with new healthy foods after the holiday.
ReplyI've tried lots of things to lose weight. Ate smaller portions of food, cut back on sweets, ect. It never worked for me. I've even thought the only way i could lose weight was to skip a meal or two.. But I've decided to try the Special K diet.. and hopefully it works. I've been reading all the other comments and it sounds like it does, as long as you stay with it. I'm determined to lose weight. I exercise and i'm constantly moving and walking around, so hopefully I will succeed with this.
ReplyI'm 13 and 100 pounds and im like 5'6 and people tell me im skinny but i do have a little pudge on my stomach and i've been wanting to try this diet so bad and after reading peoples things im inspired i just want to loose like 5 pounds to look good in a bathing suit!
and i really need to know what i should do.
this is what i think .... a bowl of cereal for breakfast .... a bowl of ceareal and a snack bar for lunch ...
lots of water and then dinner. am i correct.
it's my new years resoluytion and i hope it works :)
help (:
ReplyCarly:
You're 5'6", 100lbs and want to lose weight?
Do you realize that a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index) is 18.5 or higher? Your BMI is 16.1. (To get to 18.5 you'd need to weigh around 115lbs - don't freak out about being that "fat" though.)
Since you're concerned about looking good in a bathing suit, work the "pudge" off. You'd be losing the body fat you may have (although more than likely you're the only one who sees it) and you'd be gaining the weight you desperately need. So, you'll look amazing in a bathing suit and you'll be healthier! It's a win-win situation. Just try not the think about the numbers themselves too much, you'll psych yourself out. A lower weight doesn't necessarily mean a healthier person.
Oh, and I'm sixteen, 5'6" and weigh around 115lbs.
Trust me, it's the best. I was 100lbs for awhile but while I did get compliments a lot, they were always from girls or guys who are attracted to anorexics.
Now that I weigh 115lbs (and my body is all muscle, it's not "pudge") I feel way more confident about myself. I love my body in a bikini (and so do all the guys!) it's so wonderful I can't explain it.
If you really were to go down to 95lbs I would be worried for you. I know what I'm talking about, I was exactly the same way (and weigh, lol).
ReplyShannon knows what she is talking about.
Also, losing weight does not make you confident. You'd either then think you need to lose even more, or hate your hair, your nose, whatever. It won't change the other things going on that make you feel unconfident, like having your body change as you become more mature.
Replyi am planing on going on this challenge. i believe i am a little over weight and would like to lose a few pounds. do you think this will work or not?
Replyoh and carly.
Replyi am 13 5'5 and 120.
i believe that you are fine with your weight.
i mean you are taller that me and my same age but weigh 20 pounds less.
how lucky is that
i wish i were you.
most girls in my grade are only 103 pounds.
im 120.
not healthy.
You are still extremely skinny, Britnee. You can't know what most girls in your grade weigh unless you personally weighed them all - and even if they all were 103lb, they'd all be underweight for their height, which can be explained by not having changed from their kid body to their woman body yet, and maybe you already have.
You could weigh 10lb more than you weigh and still be thin. You don't need to lose weight.
ReplyI'm fifteen years old, and my stepmother and I want to start the diet. She's put on weight (from having 3 kids) and It's not that I'm fat, I just hate how I look. We both want to lose like 20 pounds. Any suggestion as to how we should do this?
ReplyWhat the hell is going on? this diet id for people OVER 18 AND WITH A BMI OF 25 AND OVER!!! YOU LITTLE GIRLS NEED TO GET HAPPY WITH YOUR BODIES AND STOP BEING SILLY!! KIDS TODAY AND IM ONLY 22 THE WORLDS CHANGED TOO MUCH AND YOU ARE GROWING UP TOO FAST
Replyi agree with u josc, it is true that they never tell u that it is half of what u regular eat, and that is how they make u loose weight. It isnt really about the type of cereal, it is about how much u are consuming.
ReplyMY BABY IS NOW 7WEEKS AND I'M SO READY TO LOSE THIS BABY WEIGHT! I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IF SPECIAL K WORKS FOR ME!
ReplyOk the moms who want to go on this diet weeks after giving birth are scaring me more than the teenagers. They are kids and you are parents so you should know better.
If you are breastfeeding, I'm positively terrified of you and the other new moms there going on this starvation diet.
Replyhi i'm brittany i'm 16 and i'm very athletic. i play varsity basketball and made it to state in varsity track and i do high school rodeo, but i never seem to cut weight. if anything i'm gaining. i want to fit into size 3 pants which i'm a 5 now. but nothing is working!!!!!! i always seem to be hungry... HELP!
Replyi think that if people like cereal (and special K IS pretty good, even as breakfast cereals go; it's tastier than eating yogurt and plain oatmeal 2 meals a day or something) then this is actually a good diet for them. I like it cause its atleast an idea that might be easy to stick to, and you don't have to go with the vague instructions to 'eat better'. Its a meal plan that you know will help you lose weight, so why not? the problem is, you will need to keep on with eating well after it is over or you'll most likely gain it all back and more. and this is certainly not a diet for someone wishing to lose serious poundage.
Replyi have started the diet today and i like it exept the milk this is what i did
Replyi had a meal bar for lunch then i came home from school and had a bowl of cereal then for dinner i had two taco's is that bad?
I've tried the Special K diet for a week. I haven't eaten anything not suggested by the diet, I eat 3/4 cup of cereal and I haven't been hungry or tempted to snack. I do cardio everyday and circuit training evert other day, I have lost only 2/10 of a pound and my body fat percentage has not changed at all. I am very disappointed with this diet.
ReplyME AGAINN!
i need information
this is my routine ....
a tiny bowl of special kay cereal with fat free milk.
a special kay snack bar for snack
the special kay protein bar for lunch
then maybe a special kay snack bar again
then dinner
is that what i should be eating to loose weight.
Replypleaseeee i need your help.
thanks
car
your cereal really does work I think it's easier to be healthy then sorry
ReplyTo heck with cereal! I've been doing the Atkins diet for 4 years now. I lost 50 pounds, and have been able to keep it off. My cholesterol is low,and my blood sugar is normal. I one tried the cereal diet(before doing Atkins), and all it did was make me gain weight! When I exercised, I just maintained my weight. Carbohydrates do nothing but make me gain weight. Atkins was right.
Replyi thought that I would loose 3 pounds a week..
Replybut CRAP.. i'm loosing it fast.
i'm on my 4th day & i just lost 4.5 pounds.
It's not like all I eat is cereal though.
I still eat ice cream, chocolate cookies, bbq chicken, and steak. i'm happy. i just don't know how to maintain it because once i get out of hand.. it REALLY gets out of control. by the way, my weight was 158.
Your weight loss isn't out of control. You probably just lost some of your water weight. About 10 pounds of your weight is water weight which changes your weight from day today. That's why to know if you really lost weight it takes some time. It's better to focus on how your body looks and feels compared to how many pounds you weigh.
Replyhmmm, i just want to lose weight and i dont think eating cereal is gonna work becuz its just taking away all of the food u eat, ur basically starving urself 4 no reason, starving isnt the answer
ReplyI'm just curious, I am looking into trying this special k challenge. I enjoy the cereal and the snack bars and such, however I am not nearly satisfied with the serving amount nor do I like skim milk but I am desprite need to lose weight, I am 17 years old and I used to be so skinny but with being skinny I was young and stupid and didn't relize the ways I ate were going to catch up with me...Now I am just completly uncomfortable with my body. Does anyone have any suggestions, maybe a diffrent diet plan I could try I need structure, and satisfaction.
Replywell, I am trying out this Special K Diet Challenge. I don't consider it unhealthy due to the fact I usually don't eat breakfast and my lunches are sporadic and quick which means grabbing what ever on the go. So actually this will probably be more healthy for me and easy to maintain. Hopefully it will "kick start" my metabolism back in gear and I can lose the weight I've gained from sitting around with a broken ankle. WIsh me luck
ReplyPs
I'm a 39 yr old mother of 6. So losing weight is tough but this is a healthy meal that even my kids don't mind me eating. My 9 yr old son thinks its better than those liquid shakes. :)
I have been doing the Special K diet for 1 week and 3 days. i was 11 stone and i am now 10 stone 8lbs. I think its great. I start to feel bit hungry late afternoon but I don't give in because i know i will be going home to have my dinner soon.
It does get a bit hard watching everyone at work eating junk food, but you will think that on any diet. When you know you can't have something, the more you want it. Its all in your head!
I have never lost this much weight in just over a week. i have been struggling with my weights for years. i have never found anything that works as well so who cares if i get a bit bored from time to time. i know I would much rather lose the weight than eat a bar of chocolate or a burger and be unhappy with my weight.
some people will hate the idea of this diet but it works for me and if it works for me and is making me feel happier everytime i step on the scales and have lost another lb, its well worth it.
Anyone doing this diet...good luck :)
ReplyI lost about 50 pounds on Nutra Systems, but have gained baout 20 back. Am thinking about trying this, rather than spending another $350 for another box of food. A few boxes of cereal would be a lot cheaper.
ReplyFor Kat,
ReplyIs the smell because of all the extra going to the toilet, or is it for the general smell of special k. i dont think special k smells so bad it warrants the use of oust...
I started this diet a couple days ago and have lost two pounds. I am not living in the states so i cannot get to buy the water or cereal bars. i hope it works though because i want to lose 40 lbs.
ReplyI'm doing this diet and I love it. I have never felt so good. I don't feel like I'm starving at all. The special k diet is no longer just cereal. They have waffles, snack bars, snack bites, and protein water. You are allowed to drink whatever you would like, which is great because I'm a caffeine addict. I'm going on my second week and I've already lost 8 lbs.
ReplyOK, $7.00 every 2 weeks plus the cereal/protein bars...let's say another $7.00. That is $14.00 for 2 weeks. If you would eat out those 2 meals that would be about $10.00 per day average. If you would buy groceries and eat regular cooked breakfast and lunches (even sandwiches) the cost would be a lot more than $14.00 in 2 weeks. If it is a marketing strategy, then it is a pretty good one at telling people they can lose weight on it (if it works---I just started it today) AND save a lot of money in 2 weeks....GO KELLOGGS!!!!!

Replyhi i have some questions. i weigh 148 pounds and im only
13 years old would this diet really work for me? please andwer my question and email me back.
thankyou!!!!
Gabby,
If you started out at 114 pounds, I wouldn't suggest trying to lose much weight! You can maintain your seemingly healthy weight by eating healthy and being active.
Reply
Kamal,
You say you weight 148 pounds, but how tall are you? As long as you are "in proportion", as they say, then your age isn't really a factor. Personally, because you are so young, I would not suggest a diet like the Special K. You need to make sure you are eating plenty of vitamins and protein because your body is growing and developing. I would suggest staying active and exercising, and eating a diet of lean mea with plenty of fruits and veggies. Special K would be a fine breakfast, but I don't think you should restrict yourself to eating mostly cereal. The key to maintaing a healthy weight is truly exercise.
ReplyCarly,
T you and the other young girls writing similar comments..I am truly concered for you. If you are 5'5 and weigh anything less than 130-140 pounds, then you have NOTHING to be concerned about. You sound like you are quite thin. If you have a little bit of 'pudge' you'd like to lose, like around your belly or love handles, you can't do it by dieting. Doing crunches or running...exercising in general..is going to tighten you up. Weight loss is not what you want because frankly, your first few pounds will be shed in places you DONT want to see smaller if you know what I mean! Most of the time, even skinny people have a bit of extra pudge around their belly. It isn't because they need to lose weight, it is because Americans eat too much sugar (pop/soda..even diet) and are not active enough. Try cutting out the pop and doing some crunches and see what happens.
ReplyHey everyone,
ReplyI have been on this challenge for about a week. I didn't think I could stay on it this long, but I have. I have found myself very hungry at times, but thats because over the holidays I ate so much, even when I wasn't hungry. I have enjoyed special k before it became popular among dieters. Two summers ago I stuck to it and lost about 15 pounds while training for volleyball. For a while I stopped working out, or eating right. You know what happened. I am now regulary exercising, waking up with Special K and sticking to it. I am now a sophomore in college and I haven't weighed less than 150 since I was a freshman in high school. I want to lose my first 10 pounds and then keep going from there. Special K will hopefully jump start things for me with regular exercising. I really want to feel great and fabulous again. Go for it women! -AKN
You can eat 200 calories of anything to replace big meals. A chicken breast and a salad could be replaced and you'd have more protein and more fiber. You could do this with capn' crunch. You'd be hungry but you could do it. If you can't stick to a "diet" for the rest of your life you will eventually fail.
ReplyOkay so i do think that the substitution of a meal with cereal can work and did 4 me but it is also a lifestyle change... u cant expect to eat the cereal for 2 of your meals then make the 1 meal that u do eat CRAP!!!!! you need to eat healthy and exercise!!!!! and also stick with it.. no u dont have to keep eating the cereal 2x a day but once u do start exercising u instinctively start to watch what u put in your body on a daily basis!! i aslo think that weighing yourself everyday helps too!!!
ReplyMm, after taking this diet, i've realized that not only have i not lost any weight, but i've started to want to eat more and more since the cereal was not filling me up properly.
Not a good choice for me i suppose. Might obviously depend on the person taking the diet!
ReplyThe KELLOGG DIET and not the compromised, "Special K diet" will extend your life into the 90s if you start early enough. Watch the movie, "Wellsville", with Anthony Hopkins. If you know the history, you would understand a lot of why this diet works...it's a lifestyle diet not a fad. Dr. Kellogg, while arguably insane (and portrayed hilariously in the movie), believed that a reduced calorie diet with no animal fat can be sustained if you simply eat the right foods. He did not believe in adding sugar to the cereals, but his brother, the cereal industrialist, realized the addictive qualities of sugar and implemented them in the marketable "Kellogg's" Brand.
I have personally adopted this lifestyle diet, starting a week and a half ago, and have dropped from 231 to 226, but I modified it slightly. I enjoy granola bars or oatmeal bars when I don't have time for cereal in the morning. When I do have time I eat 2 servings of Cheerios, with skim and I dump a serving of Quaker Oatmeal in the bowl and I feel full for hours. When lunch rolls around, at work, I eat 2 servings of Cheerios with skim, or no-fat milk. For dinner I eat burritos, salad, apples, bananas, spaghetti and sauce, green, yellow and red peppers, a serving of yogurt on a rotating basis and then, most importantly, 3-12 mixed nuts. THIS DIET DOES NOT WORK WITHOUT THE NUTS FOR ME.
I heard that you can survive on 6 nuts a day for years if required, and I believe it wholeheartedly. The yogurt balances out the beans and I have noticed I feel much better all the time. I quit drinking coffee, as my breakfast, and I realized I have much more energy throughout the day, although the headaches took about 2-3 days of tylenol before they subsided. The other thing that is important is to go to bed at a reasonable hour. I only binged 1x and it was at 1 in the morning...I ate a whole box of granola bars, which isn't really that bad, but I felt gross about it later.
This weekend I went to a family gathering, and there was tons of food, which I figured I deserved to try because I didn't want to offend anybody by not eating their food. I ACTUALLY GOT HORRIBLY SICK (INDIGESTION/DIARRHEA). Getting sick by eating what I used to eat all the time is what convinced me that this lifestyle change is awesome.
The best part of the diet is it is inexpensive, super easy and ultra-flexible because you almost always feel full. I have noticed that other food always left me wanting. It's weird, but I still have the habits of wanting to eat, but I am so full all the time that I am literally turned off by all the other foods (that are not on the diet). I think those habits will subside soon and the diet will be even easier than it is now.
ReplyOk so in a way I am following this diet but I change it up a bit to meet my needs.. I see all of you complaining about having to eat cereal.. so don't do it! I eat a full bowl of special k cereal in the morning with almost a full bowl of milk... so I eat more then what it says to.. and then on my 15 minute break at work I have a protein bar but then lunch I'll have either a peanut butter sandwich or some oatmeal and a special k snack... and eat my dinner like I usually would then later in the night I'll have a smaller bowl of cereal and drink water or juice throught out the whole day, all I have given up is the massive amounts of fast food I used to eat and soda and I fell great, at 21 yrs old I weighed 132 2 weeks ago, yea I know most of you would say I didn't need to lose anything but I want to feel better about myself and feel better cuz all that fast food was getting to me. In exactly 2 weeks I'm down to 126 and I feel great and I eat more then the box says to and I can see my body toning up pretty fast. So you don't have to follow the instructions exactly to get the same effect, you just have to quit trying to take the easy way out by fast food, I'll eat some pizza here and there for dinner or some chicken nuggets and it didn't affect anything else, plus I haven't worked out this whole 2 weeks because of my work schedule... so it all really dpends on what you eat folks, don't blame the company, it may not work for everyone and if you don't like it... don't do it!
