Special K Diet: Cereal for Weight Loss?

Over the last few months there has been a lot of cereal promotion going on. Kelloggs' Special K brand have been promoting their very own Special K Diet Challenge (for a number of years now). Not to be outdone, Kraft have "lose 10 pounds" emblazoned on virtually the entire line of "Post" brand cereals (called Eat 2 Lose 10)

Both cereal "diets" are bold and upfront with their claims: "Lose up to 6 pounds in 2 weeks!" shouts Special K. Is this for real? Is it valid?

The Special K Diet

• Eat a serving of Kellogg's® Special K®, Special K® Red Berries, Special K® Vanilla Almond, Special K® Fruit & Yogurt or Special K® Low Carb Lifestyle Protein Plus cereal with 2/3 cup skim milk and fruit for two meals a day.
• Eat your third meal as you normally do.
• For snacks, choose from fresh fruits and vegetables or a Special K® Bar.
• Consume beverages as you normally do.

Special K claim that the diet is "based on valid research conducted at leading universities". In typical hard-sell fashion, they fail to provide the reference or provide a link to the "valid research". After some digging, I found the aforementioned study.

Yes - People Lost Weight
It made interesting reading, and effectively backed up some of the claims from Special K. According to my reading, the mean weight loss was less than 2 kg (4.4 pounds) in the 2 week period.

A basic low fat diet
So what's the magic? There is no magic. The women in the study ate less than they normally did. According to the study, the women in the Special K group were eating about 2200 kcals per day. When they started substituting the cereal meals they dropped daily intake by about 640 kcals per day. Furthermore, a lot of those calories were from fat (~39 grams or 351 kcals).

Good or What?
Personally I think incorporating some cereals into your diet can be good - but there are some caveats here:
Satiety - From experience, I've noticed that wolfing down a bowl of cereal doesn't always curb the hunger pangs. However having a bit more protein in the mix does keep the pangs at bay.
Nutrition - The simple truth is - Special K is better than what most people eat, but it still contains such gems as High Fructose Corn Syrup. Serving for serving, it has less potassium and fiber than oats, and more sugar. Compare here and here.

The Claim

"Lose 6 Pounds in 2 Weeks"

The Interpretation
"If you currently have a poor diet, but substitute it with our cereal - you may lose 4.4 pounds over the first two weeks. You will be probably feel very hungry while restricting your calories, and will may find eating cereal for dinner or lunch to be untenable after a while. Boredom could well set in. History shows that a low-fat, higher-carb diet can work, but in the long run it may backfire".

That said - you could do a lot worse than eating cereal, skim milk, and fruit - it's a lot healthier than the average American meal...

for my science fair experiment for the ninth grade I am having my mom do the Special K Challenge and my dad eat Whole grain cereal. With my brother eating a sugary cereal with them all eating the same amount of calories a day to see who will lose the greater percentage of weight overa two week period. through all of my research I now think that my mom will win. It seems as though Special K really is the best taste wise and health wise. If anyone has any advice ir data to share please post it, I am interested to see how other peoples experiments go and if they agree with the claim by Kellogg's and my conclusion!

Congratulations Lizzie I just read your comment and 16 1/2 INCHES is a big deal especially for only 9 days. Be careful I hear that losing more than 2-4 pounds a week is dangerous. Again CONGRATS and enjoy your new body!

Brittany, that is very interesting. What kind of whole grain cereal is dad eating?

It would be interesting too if you could have one of them eating Special K, which does contain sugar, and the other eating the same calories and amount of milk but with oatmeal and artificial sweetener. That would sort of prove if ingesting or not ingesting a small amount of sugar without any other changes in diet makes a difference.

Does this diet work or NOT???

This is disgraceful- Eating just 2 bowls of cereal all day of course you're going to lose weight but HOW UNHEALTHY and UNREALISTIC.
Special K - I am ashamed of you!

Reply
Jan

Turbomer, you misunderstand. Those 2 bowls are breakfast and dinner. You still eat lunch as you normally do.

it says its better than what most ppl eat but old fashioned oatmeal is better 4 u. + it contains gems such as hIgh fructose cornsyrup, less potassim and fiber than oats but more suger HMMMMMM..... LETS GO WITH OATMEAL

My best friend was exactly like you. She could not get under 140 to save her life. She excercised relentlessly & dieted for months. Then she stuck to The Special K plan & is , at the moment at 138. It got me motivated to start! I hope I do as well as she is doing!

JM, there are some things you can do, but mostly, I think you should ditch the scale and get a tape measure instead. 5lb is not what is important, 1" matters much more.

You could start weight training or if you already do, kick up the intensity. And you could clean up your diet, reducing the amount of processed foods. Both work great. Oh yeah, and eat 6x a day instead of 3x.

in response to josies comment..
" I need to actually lose about 100 pounds-so do ya'll think this will work for me since I need to lose so much? Or is this diet for the ones who need only to lose no more than 20pounds?"

the special k diet is only supposed to last 2 weeks and lose your 3-6 lbs.
so..no i dont think it will help you lose 100 pounds..
you should eat healthy (there are lots of suggestions in other posts here) and exercise and that is the key to weight loss..not some stupid marketing fad diet.

No I did not misunderstand at all! Not one bit- Having 2 bowls and cereal and then just one meal is nothing less than starvation.
Get a grip - any of you who want to do this- you must actually find a way to be realistic if you're going to keep weight off long term. I would bet my life that 99 percent of the ppl out there- maybe 100- could never keep up long term.
As I said, Spec K should be ashamed of themselves.

I don't do this diet or even eat cereal at all. But your original post said "2 bowls of cereal a day", not "2 bowls of cereal and a meal". If that meal is a fast-food one, it could have more than enough calories for the entire day there, plus the 2 bowls of cereal plus the milk. So this diet is providing many more calories, potentially, than something like the Subway diet - 2 small subs with no dressing, at around 400 cals each, + 1 apple (80 calories). Now that is a starvation diet.

I agree with you it is not a realistic lifestyle change, but heck, no diet out there is. Any diet that says "eat this at this time and that at that time" is not realistic. Very few programs are feasible in the long run.

I had tried the specail k diet about 6 months ago. I only stuck to it for 5 days BUT amazingly lost 4lbs. I didn't even exercise. weird. Anyways, im sure i have gained it back, and im sure even if I didn't, them 4lbs wouldn't even be noticeable...not to me at least. Anyways, I just started a new job as a receptionist so i get alot of time to just sit here and do almost nothing. They have a popcorn machine right next to me and it's so hard not to eat it, so full of fat. Then I started thinking that I need to quit that craving and eat something a little better. just this past weekend I decided I was going to start the diet again. It's tuesday now and I started on monday...I really don't believe it keeps the wait off unless you constantly eat it and exercise. It's hard for me to stick to something...but if i do lose more than 5lbs in two weeks...guarenteed I will be looking towards the long run. Im not going to give up this time.

hey, i can go alot of pilates, but not as much weight training ( i can get to the gym once a week) but i do excersises at home every day.
i eat small snacks through out the day like apples all the time.
i feel like if i pick up the intensity anymore i wont have any time or energy left to do anything else. does it get any better? i mean if i have to continue picking it up as soon as i reach a goal (if i ever do haha) i will have to either stay doing that much or pick it up to remain that way. frankly that makes me very... sad :S

For all ya'll who think this diet doesn't work, it does. My sister started this special k diet weighing 290 pounds. She was on the diet for a month and now she weighs 220 pounds. She is now losing more weight. She has encouraged me to do the same because I was weighing 201 pounds. Now I weight 172 pounds due to the diet. All we did was eat two bowls of cereal a day. Eat fruits, vegetables, drink water, eat smart one's dinner, and exercise-every day.

Its my 10th day on the Special K diet.. Having my breakfast is the toughest part of the day cause i never did take breakfast.. i havent lost any weight.. im still the same, but people do tell me that i have started giving a thinner look.. but i feel extra fat right now!!! i started off with 57kgs and i'm still the same.. im gonna wait another 4 day[...]

The weight difference of 2 Kgs a day is possible, provided you eat a lot of fibre, drink a lot of water. Once you dump in rest room, this can happen. I tend to drink abut 2000 ml of water before noon. I goto karate class in the evening, where no intervel is allowed to use rest room/ drink water. If I drive back home after an hours time I weigh about 1 kg less. Generally the less weight is original weight.

Dona, unless you are 4'8" tall, 95lb is underweight. Why do you want to lose weight?

So far I have purchased the cereal and the ceral bars for snack. My diet calls for special K for breakfast, special K snack, lunch special K, then another special K snack, and finally dinner. My problem is trying to control my portions, my urge to eat whenever I'm bored or upset. So I'm going to give it 2 weeks, see how it all works out, and if I like it I'll continue with the Special K Plan. I'm 23 yrs old weighing 150 lbs, I use to run 10-14 miles a week, once i stopped running my muscle turned to fat, now I'm taking charge!

Yes I know this diet works. I have sticked to hit for 2 months and lost 30lbs. I was at 230 and now I am at 200. I know this will work for you. You have to be strick and stay at it. Also try eating the SPECIAL K bars during the day with breakfast and lunch.

If you do not stay with it you will not succeed. Hey it works.

Two years ago I was 35 pounds overweight and tired all the time. I began walking and eating Special K for lunch. I still do and have kept the weight off. I like Special K for lunch because it doesn't make me feel tired or heavy after lunch plus you can spruce it up with blueberries, strawberries, bananas or cranberries. I am hooked for life!!

Obviously this is a marketing tool, in order to stay on the diet for 2 weeks you would eat 24 bowls of cereal, the average box has about 11 servings, therefore you would go through over 2 boxes of special k cereal in two weeks, costing you about 7 dollars every 2 weeks just for cereal. Then there is the special k bars, protein waters, etc also costing more $$$. So you may lose weight but unless you find a bargain on the cereals its going to cost, just eat healthier and exercise, funny how the diet doesn't mention exercising.

I have been on the Special K diet for 4 months now. I've lost about 7 lbs. I find that it's more of a lifestyle for me than a quick 2 week diet. I have a bar for breakfast and a bowl for lunch and then I eat WHATEVER I want to for dinner. I use it mainly to maintain my weight. I can go to dinner and order a steak or greasy burger and not be guilty. I actually love the taste. I have tried all of the flavors. I was trying to change it up a bit throughout the week but I personally prefer the Red Berries. I think that if you are considering it you should try it. If you miss a Special K meal and replace it with an unhealthy one it won't effect you in the same way as if you were always eating bad. I love Special K!

I my self love the Special K diet I've been on the diet for a few months and I've already lost my goal and i'm sticking with it, But just like every other diet if you stop or change your eating habits your going to gain weight a diet is for life not a couple weeks. I'm not sure about the whole drink what you normaly would because coffe, sodas etc. are not a good idea I drink milk and water. I know what some of you are thinking yes I did get tierd of eating ceral but that was intel I looked into all the special k stuff they have, they have more types of ceral's,ceral bar's, drinks so many I can't name. I would recommend this diet to someone who is willing to keep the diet up and not to expect to lose 6 pounds in 2 weeks then just stop and then go to M-D's and get a double burger!

Catherine, are you going to be able to eat this specific cereal and cereal products for 2 meals of the day, for the rest of your life, without getting bored? Cause if so I admire you. I could never do it.
