Special K Diet: Cereal for Weight Loss?

Over the last few months there has been a lot of cereal promotion going on. Kelloggs' Special K brand have been promoting their very own Special K Diet Challenge (for a number of years now). Not to be outdone, Kraft have "lose 10 pounds" emblazoned on virtually the entire line of "Post" brand cereals (called Eat 2 Lose 10)

Both cereal "diets" are bold and upfront with their claims: "Lose up to 6 pounds in 2 weeks!" shouts Special K. Is this for real? Is it valid?

The Special K Diet

• Eat a serving of Kellogg's® Special K®, Special K® Red Berries, Special K® Vanilla Almond, Special K® Fruit & Yogurt or Special K® Low Carb Lifestyle Protein Plus cereal with 2/3 cup skim milk and fruit for two meals a day.
• Eat your third meal as you normally do.
• For snacks, choose from fresh fruits and vegetables or a Special K® Bar.
• Consume beverages as you normally do.

Special K claim that the diet is "based on valid research conducted at leading universities". In typical hard-sell fashion, they fail to provide the reference or provide a link to the "valid research". After some digging, I found the aforementioned study.

Yes - People Lost Weight
It made interesting reading, and effectively backed up some of the claims from Special K. According to my reading, the mean weight loss was less than 2 kg (4.4 pounds) in the 2 week period.

A basic low fat diet
So what's the magic? There is no magic. The women in the study ate less than they normally did. According to the study, the women in the Special K group were eating about 2200 kcals per day. When they started substituting the cereal meals they dropped daily intake by about 640 kcals per day. Furthermore, a lot of those calories were from fat (~39 grams or 351 kcals).

Good or What?
Personally I think incorporating some cereals into your diet can be good - but there are some caveats here:
Satiety - From experience, I've noticed that wolfing down a bowl of cereal doesn't always curb the hunger pangs. However having a bit more protein in the mix does keep the pangs at bay.
Nutrition - The simple truth is - Special K is better than what most people eat, but it still contains such gems as High Fructose Corn Syrup. Serving for serving, it has less potassium and fiber than oats, and more sugar. Compare here and here.

The Claim

"Lose 6 Pounds in 2 Weeks"

The Interpretation
"If you currently have a poor diet, but substitute it with our cereal - you may lose 4.4 pounds over the first two weeks. You will be probably feel very hungry while restricting your calories, and will may find eating cereal for dinner or lunch to be untenable after a while. Boredom could well set in. History shows that a low-fat, higher-carb diet can work, but in the long run it may backfire".

That said - you could do a lot worse than eating cereal, skim milk, and fruit - it's a lot healthier than the average American meal...

crap, I just brought a whole 2 boxes of this cereal and it doesn't work? *sigh* It's expensive cereal too. Companies will do anything to sell their product. I really hate how a lot of products aimed at women play on their insecurities and claim to make them feel better about themself. It's awful because it makes women feel even worse watching some slim woman in a bikini eating Special K. They feel they want that body and get upset when they are unable to achieve it.

So ive been on the special k diet for 4 days and lost 2 lbs already! I have tried and failed and the diet about 2 other times because i love food and sweets but this time i am sticking to it! I always found excuses to eat junk during the diet. I told myself enough excuses!

I have a bowl of multi grain cheerios in the morning with fruit. A special k snack later on. Then for lunch i have a protein meal bar (the double chocolate tastes like a candy bar!) and i have another special k snack between dinner. I eat dinner as i normally do but just keep portions under control. I do a lot of walking and lifting at my job and i count that as excersise and i do go for runs and walks also.

Some tips i have to sticking with this diet is to get all the supplies at once so u have them on hand and its not out of your way to go get more special k food and cereal. And write down why you want to lose the weight, how you plan to do it, and when you want to accomplish your goal by. Good luck!

I'm a college student majoring in nutrition and during my first year I didn't gain weight, but I maintained my weight. Over the summer I began working out more because I had more time and I began eating special K. I do not eat their cereal twice a day, but I will eat their bar and a yogurt for breakfast instead of things like grits. I have lost about six pounds, but I wouldn't recommend just eating cereal twice a day because losing weight is a lifestyle change not a temporary change.

I am relatively thin, but I have a "bagel" on my tummy and wanted to get rid of it, so currently I am on the Special K diet. I know it won't keep the weight off but once I lose the inch off my waist I can keep it off, its just getting it off that is my problem.

I admit that the small serving size makes me hungry, but whenever I get hungry, I just go get some carrots or some blueberries, etc to munch on. Helps you live a helthier life if you follow the diet. I drink mostly water throughout the day, but I do have a cup of coffee with creamer in the morning and sometimes have a diet coke at night.

I've lost 3 pounds so far, and I am on my 8th day. I doubt I will lose much more because I am pretty thin already. I have been excersising, about an hour on a statoinary bike, plus muscle training EVERY DAY, so i probaly could have lost more, but I know I am putting on some muscle. The cereal is starting to get old, but the new variety of cereal helps keep me focused. Although it is a "quick fix" it does help you change the way you eat because after the 2 weeks I will continute to eat the small serving size for breakfast (which I always measure) and I will eat a healthy lunchand dinner AND choose veggies and fruits for snacks rather then chips, etc.

My best friend did the diet and lost 15 pounds. She works out 3 days a week. Once she reached goal weight she does cheat once a week. She said the cereal keeps her full during the day and she does not feel hungry all the time. She eats Special K but also buys the organic cereals. I am starting it tomorrow, I have 10 pounds to lose. My friend never lost this much and kept it off, she looks good. I am excited to start.

hey guys i used to be overweight but i was able to loose about 20 pounds each month for 2 1/2 months but after i lost the weight i tried to mantain my eating with Special K but it doesn't really work unless you get some cardio each day

Reply
Jaclyn

Yah, you def HAVE TO exercise. Not only is that a necessity to keep weight off it is a must to stay healthy, especially cardio, good for your heart :)
I am only 20, I weigh 130lbs and when I went to the Dr. 2 weeks ago he told me I NEED to do cardio 5 days a weeks for at least 30mins, so I do 5 days a week an hour each day, I give myself a break on the weekends :D maybe this is why I am so hungry in between cereal bowls?

Diet may work or not but the last box of Kelloggs Special K with red berries that I bought made both my son and me violently ill -- and since it was the only food we had in common we know that was definitely it. I reported it to the FDA but Kelloggs of course had a wait on THEIR customer service line. So be careful if you have a lowered immune system. I've enjoyed a lot of Kelloggs cereals over the years, but I'm feeling pretty wary about them right now.

Yea this worked for me, I weighed about 265 LAST around the middle of august, then i stopped at the end of september, i went from 265 to 235, people all saw the diference and so did i, i dropped alot of weight and went from a size 46 to a 36-38, then i quit my diet, i said, "Ehh since i dropped 30, im gettin gurls now anyway even at 235" then i let it getto me, its almost a whole year later, and ive gained back all that weight i lost, im at 260, i DO look less fatter, but im WAYYY more flabby and about 2 inches taller then before, so it helps my apearance seem less fatter. but yea today ive started my diet, its august 6th and i plan to keep doin the diet till decembre, but this time im GONNA work out, the last time i did this diet, i worke out for about a week withlots of liftin weights and situps, then stopped, but ima continue this, ill prolly lose alot more, and be more toned up, AND be able to keep the weight off unlike last time.

I have gained a noticeable amount of weight over the summer. I'm 15 years old 5"2 so I'm not very tall and I'm about 130 pounds I don't even want to weigh myself anymore. I really want to lose weight like maybe 10-15 pounds. I do exercise regularly and I do have some muscle on me. I got so sad when I realized my clothes stopped fitting me about a week ago and I starved myself which is no good I know. I did see results but I know that is just because my body has been eating away from itself. So now I am starting the special k diet hoping to lose weight, I already eat the cereal regularly and I like it so I don't think it will be that hard.

I tried the Special K Diet for the full 2 weeks and even though it worked for the time I was on the diet as soon as I stopped the weight was straight back on again! Great for short term weight loss but not so great if you want long term sustainable weight loss.

Try Kashi brand. It tastes so good and is more natural. Add some fresh fruits and veggies to the diet, drink lots and lost of water to aide the fiber from the cereal do it's job. Also, don't eat the same type of cereal every time. That way you won't get bored. When you eat cereal your fiber intake is higher. That way your body is cleansing itself and getting healthier. You will loose some weight as well as improving your overall health.

you can not, and will NOT lose more then 5 pounds a week, in a healthy way. starving yourself, or puking yourself, that's a way you can lose 10 pounds in one week. but in a HEALTHY, diet and exercise way. you will NOT lose more then 5 pounds in a week. if you really want to lose weight you need to diet, and exercise. what most people don't do right, is what you eat. a piece of fruit that has 200 callories, to a candy bar that has 200, ofcourse people would reach for the candy bar. but there is GOOD callories, and BAD callories. good callories are in fruits, vegies, fish, some chicken. bad callories is in bred, junk food, unhealthy foods. You need to get in a diet, and KEEP it. ask your doctor how many callories you should consume, if you were to take a diet, and then consume that. When you exercise, I recomend walking, alot. because once you reach your weight goal, people gain weight back on after because once they've lost all the weight they wanted, they stoped dieting, and stoped exercising. NO human can keep it off without doing anything. being thin takes alot of work, it sucks, but that's just how it is. if you want to keep the weight off, go on a good diet that you can stay on for the rest of your life. and, do exercises you can also do for the rest of your life. as in, walking alot. the day you stop dieting and exercising as much as you did when you were on the diet, you will slowly start putting the weight back on. so keep on a good diet and exercise.

I'm really interested in trying this diet. I want to lose about 10 pounds, at least. The problem is for me, anytime I eat cereal with a decent amount of fiber, it goes right through me. Not to sound gross or anything, but that can be a major problem if I'm eating this for lunch or something at work. I mean, I guess it's technically good for me. I just see it as being a potentional problem, especially with all the fiber Special K probably has. BLAH.

Hey, I'm 17 and I weigh in about 203 [last time I checked] and I'm about 5'4". Yes, I know I'm over weight. But any way. I use to be skinny, not extremly skinny but I had a nice body, does that make since?

Well,I have depression and insomia. My depression pills work fine, but I came to not give a crap about anything anymore [signs of the pills working you may get more depressed, nice.] and my sleeping/emotional pills made me sleep-walk/eat. Now I stopped taking those pills like,a year ago. But I still sleep-walk/eat.

So my question is..

What should I do about sleep eatting? I was thinking of putting a few specail Kay bars on my nightstand. I mean its better then eatting half a cake again, right?

I will go back to working out, you know daily jogging, hitting the gym when ever I can, and gym at school. But the food is what I'm worried about.

I just started on Special K last Friday. I have decided to incorporate it as part of my transition to a healthier lifestyle by replacing my usual bagel with butter, choco chip muffin, high sugar cereal with Special K chocolately Delight for breakfast.

So I stick to only Special K for breakfast, with fruits/veggies for snacks and a low calorie lunch and healthy dinner. I don't eat out, I don't eat fast food - so we'll see how it goes.

Nutrition wise, its better than the 450 calories from a large bakery muffin.

Dear Ladies,

Now I know we live in a society that expects us to be perfect and beautiful, BUT...

Don't any of you know anything about losing weight?

It is physically IMPOSSIBLE to lose 20 pounds in a week ~ even if you ate nothing! One pound is equal to 3,500 calories, so times that by 20 and you get 70,000 calories that you would have to burn to lose those 20 pounds. I don't know of anyone that can shed that many calories in a week.

It is healthy and safe to lose 1-2 pounds per weeek - maybe 3 when you first start, so it should take 10-12 weeks to lose your 20 lbs. There are so many fads out there and that's why they are fads - they don't work! That's why you all gain your weight back. You have to realize that there is only ONE way to lose weight! CALORIES IN

You could kick start your weight loss routine with the Special K Diet because it definitely reduces your caloric intake, but it is not a long term solution, it is simply meal replacement.

Women should be eating no less than 1200 calories a day for your internal organs and energy levels to function properly - and since most of us burn well over 2000 calories a day by just existing and living our daliy routines, you will lose weight! There are many programs out there that replace 2 of your daily meals with replacements, Slim Fast is another example. And yes they do work to get you started beacuse they are portioned meals.

Go to www.nutritiondata.com and really start researching the foods that you are putting in your body ~ and hopefully that is all you will need to direct your food choices! Also research your daily caloric need to really pinpoint your needs, then reduce those by 1000 calories a day to lose 2 lbs per week.

It's all numbers!

Good Luck to all of you and please do your homework before you decide to try the next fad!

...almost at the end of my Special K Challenge (has been 12 days). I feel great and way slimmer. I wasn't really big to begin with, but I was overweight for my height (I'm only five feet tall). The worst part of this diet was the first couple days, but every diet is like that. The best thing was the you get your third meal however you like.

I ate my cereal for breakfast and lunch and then got to have goodies like steak or pizza... my usual meals anyway, for dinner. The Special K snack bars, cereal bars, and protein bars are really good and they tended to at least make me not starving while I waited for dinner to arrive. The diet also made me eat a lot more fruit, which my old diet lacked.

I've read most the comments above, and everyone has interesting opinions. I found this site because I'm on the Special K diet for the second time and am not losing a thing. Last May I got on the diet to give me those last few pounds right before my wedding. I was also exercising 6 days a week and sleeping about 5 hours a night (you try to sleep a week before your wedding, ha ha). I'd dropped about two pounds in the two weeks, from 120 to 118. Over the month after my wedding, despite continueing to exercise 4 days a week, I flew back up to 125 (still a normal weight, but not my ideal of 120-122). Now I'm coaching and teaching and am crazy busy, watching my weight creep back up from lack of exercise (literally have no time). I decided to give the Special K a try again hoping to keep my self at 125 until the season is over. No dice. Not only that, but I'm getting depresed and frustated over the fact that I can't eat anything but stupid cereal and candy bars. Lack of serious exercise is making me look fatter despite the fact that I'm hardly eating during the day. It is devastating. Now I am nearly 130 and wish I had a million bucks for lypo. I end up stuffing face at dinner and probably eat more than I would normally for dinner. For me, the key seems to be exercise, and I feel like the psychological effects of seriously denying yourself a variety of foods is not worth it. I'm changing to a whole grains/fruits and veggie diet and praying for the four weeks to pass "weightlessly" for me to get back in the gym.

A lot of the people that have commented are making me feel terrible, I weigh 198 lbs not the 145 or 132 some of you are complaining about! I don't look any bigger, but can't fit in anything but sweats,I need help, but people aren't taking me seriously due to the fact I look the same as I did 50lbs and 1 yr ago, so please don't complain about being a size 3 instead of zero or you could end up in extra larges, and have your ENTIRE body covered in stretch marks like me, and I'm still in highschool.
