Special K Diet: Cereal for Weight Loss?

Over the last few months there has been a lot of cereal promotion going on. Kelloggs' Special K brand have been promoting their very own Special K Diet Challenge (for a number of years now). Not to be outdone, Kraft have "lose 10 pounds" emblazoned on virtually the entire line of "Post" brand cereals (called Eat 2 Lose 10)

Both cereal "diets" are bold and upfront with their claims: "Lose up to 6 pounds in 2 weeks!" shouts Special K. Is this for real? Is it valid?

The Special K Diet

• Eat a serving of Kellogg's® Special K®, Special K® Red Berries, Special K® Vanilla Almond, Special K® Fruit & Yogurt or Special K® Low Carb Lifestyle Protein Plus cereal with 2/3 cup skim milk and fruit for two meals a day.
• Eat your third meal as you normally do.
• For snacks, choose from fresh fruits and vegetables or a Special K® Bar.
• Consume beverages as you normally do.


Special K claim that the diet is "based on valid research conducted at leading universities". In typical hard-sell fashion, they fail to provide the reference or provide a link to the "valid research". After some digging, I found the aforementioned study.

Yes - People Lost Weight
It made interesting reading, and effectively backed up some of the claims from Special K. According to my reading, the mean weight loss was less than 2 kg (4.4 pounds) in the 2 week period.

A basic low fat diet
So what's the magic? There is no magic. The women in the study ate less than they normally did. According to the study, the women in the Special K group were eating about 2200 kcals per day. When they started substituting the cereal meals they dropped daily intake by about 640 kcals per day. Furthermore, a lot of those calories were from fat (~39 grams or 351 kcals).

Good or What?
Personally I think incorporating some cereals into your diet can be good - but there are some caveats here:
Satiety - From experience, I've noticed that wolfing down a bowl of cereal doesn't always curb the hunger pangs. However having a bit more protein in the mix does keep the pangs at bay.
Nutrition - The simple truth is - Special K is better than what most people eat, but it still contains such gems as High Fructose Corn Syrup. Serving for serving, it has less potassium and fiber than oats, and more sugar. Compare here and here.

"Lose 6 Pounds in 2 Weeks"

The Interpretation
"If you currently have a poor diet, but substitute it with our cereal - you may lose 4.4 pounds over the first two weeks. You will be probably feel very hungry while restricting your calories, and will may find eating cereal for dinner or lunch to be untenable after a while. Boredom could well set in. History shows that a low-fat, higher-carb diet can work, but in the long run it may backfire".

That said - you could do a lot worse than eating cereal, skim milk, and fruit - it's a lot healthier than the average American meal...

well i am sorry to hear that i have been reading the special k diet for awhile and i lost 30 pounds by eating only when i am hungry and by that is eat when yourstomach startsto gurgle..alot fo times we eat cause its there, thats what i was doing..i still eat what i want but i do excercise 3 to 4 times a week, i eat in moderation and each motnh i am taking out more of my fattening food and replacing it with healthy..this is my last alternative before i decided to get surgery cause i am 200 overweight, but so far its working for me and i have been seeing progress in my clothes and have alot more enrgy..also i try to keep a calorie intake of 2000 a day and also now i think before i eat and when i go into the store i actually pass up junk food and think do i really want that bag of chips now sometimes i have a taste for my fav snack i will eat it but in moderation according to how much i plan to eat that day

hey everyone one.my mom is on the special k diet and so far has lost 20 pounds in one month she has inspired me and has also put me on the special k diet.i have so far lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks also with the help of exercise.i hope you try this diet and hopefully it will work for you.if not its ok bc maybe this diet isnt for you.good luck to everybody out there who is trying to lose weight and kuddos to those who have.

i did the special k diet last summer and it worked but by winter time i stopped but it really wprks i am starting it back up you just have to stick to it and eat healthyeat a sensible dinner HAVE FAITH!!!! it does make you a more energitic person and keep u full

I am thinking about trying the special k diet. I'm 19, 125 lbs, but with high cholesterol. Ha imagine that. I don't eat fruits or vegetables, but since I found out I have high cholesterol I realized that I needed to change my eating habits. I'm joining a gym this week to start exercising more. I want to lose maybe 5 or 10 lbs, but mainly just tone up a little bit. But I still don't know if these foods would be good for my cholesterol. For the past 4 days I've been eaten a lot of cherrios. lol. Let me know if you think this would help me and my situation.

More than likely, The cheerios will help you much more. I dont think there is any link to special k and cholesterol. Stick with the Cheerios! My dad did it and lowered his cholesterol

im mandy im 17 yrs old i just had my son a yr ago. i weigh 152 as of right now i started the speical K diet yesterday and i weighd 154 so i already lost 2 pounds n one day! with excerise of course. after i had my son its been rlly hard to get under the 150 mark and i excerise everyday and still nothing. but see alot of the females on here say there starving..not me i feel like im over full and i hope i can lose the weight still i used to eat once a day n now i gotta eat 3 times a day so i feel rlly full n sick but i lost 2 pounds already so i hope it keeps going i would b happy if i lost enough to be 140 i got a fiance and my baby boy i got noone to impress i just wanna look good for myself. so wish me luck and ill post my results n 2 weeks. try this diet.

but question..ive been workin out everyday ne ways and only eating once a day and now im eatin 3 times a day im worried that it will make me gain it caz my bodys gettin more a day and is just gonna suck all the calories n fat up, but then i was thinkin since its heathly food mayb its wat my body needs to lose more weight..better nutistion. ne one got a input on this? id b happy to hear it. thanks

I have been on the Special K diet since only Friday. I don't know if I have noticed a change yet, but I'm hoping to soon. I love to play sports and I ride my bicycle to work, so fortunately, excercise is not a problem. I have to say, it was a little difficult for me to think about eating two bowls of cereal a day in replacement for meals. I have a sort of sweet tooth, and I love having a little chocolate in the day, which unfortunately, is not part of the plan. However, in response to this tiny detail, I have decided to ween myself down on the sweets each day. So hopefully, by the end of a couple of days I will not have to have that craving for the half of the Hershey's bar that my boyfriend has in the fridge. I am currently about 165 and about 5' 6"; and I do not have a scale. I'm trying not to worry about the number of pounds I lose; I am more focused on the way that I look, because let's face it: Who isn't in this for most importantly the health, but also the look?

P.S. Any digestion problems since starting the new diet?

It's amazing to me that half the people complain about having to eat cereal for 3 days and complain about the servings but still want to lose weight. Being healthy and in shape is a sacrafice and takes work. It's not all fun and games until the weight finally comes off and you're feeling great about how you look....finally. Stop complaining and make some effort.

I did Special K in 2004 and in 6 months I went form 171 to 115. I did the cereal, water & diet drinks, no fast food and very little exercise. It works you just gotta stick with it!

i started the diet and hit was going pretty well but then i gave in to temtation=[ oh it was terrible i gave in n i paid for it all my hard work gone i gaind wat i lost bak and i gotta start over. so im starting the diet fully again today and im rlly gonna put my foot down n knucle to it! when they say once u wat normal u gain all bak its the death awful truth lol so ima start again and b strong n do it! ill post sumin later around my deadline.

I didn;t have a problem eatting it . I never ate breakfast before so it was prob best. Either way it is good for you so what exactly are you complaining about . Eat better and feel better . You loose good if not exercize more.

hi, iv just started a diet very similar to the special k one...
Because Special K is high is sugar im doing a Fruit and Fibre diet instead, still 2 bowls 2 weeks ect but with a different cereal.
Maybe if you changed your cereal type once a week you wouldnt get bored so quickly. Coco Pops would make a difference and still healthier than burger and chips (fries)

I did the special k challange for 6 months and lost a total of 60 pounds. i walked for 20 minutes a day for my excersis. the weight just fell off.

You are idiots if your saying this won't work or saying its high in sugar blah blah blah. This diet does work as long as you stick to it! Its not boring either. A serving size is 1 cup but you will be suprised with skim milk I find the texture of the cereal makes me feel like I'm eating a lot and I'm full off of 1 cup. I eat fruit for lunch and cereal again for dinner varying dinners with chicken and veggies or cereal every other day. Don't talk badly about things you don't know about. If you cut cals you will lose weight plain and simple. Yay special k!

I was on this diet for a week and lost 5 pounds but was so hungry all the time-i increased portion size and ate lots of fruits. Couldnt stretch it longer.

I am not really over weight but me and my boyfriend would like to try something to lose just a few pounds and tighten up. I think this is a great diet to start with and lose some weight but obviously in the long run you'll end up eating the cereal for breakfast only or cheat bc you cant do it anymore. I think if you want to really lose weight start with this but after you lose those few pounds just start eating healthier and exercise (at the gym,walking,swimming, running, or anything that keeps your body moving) this way you should keep the weight off and feel better. I think thats the only way to do it, because doing this diet for more than a month just seems crazy BUT if it works for you then more power to you. Well I hope the best for everyone and i'll be sure to tell you if it works for us!

ive heard negative comments about the special k20 protein water because it has 8 grams of sugar and 5g of protein in the premixed bottle--but i bought the powder that you add to your own bottle of water in pink lemonade and it has the fiber and protein but 0 grams sugar--it tastes great and really does help cut hunger --i drink one at my desk and i can usually skip a meal with it. tastes great too

Okay I just started the diet today. I was wondering since some people eat their cereal with fruit (I don't do this), if instead of eating my breakfast and dinner bowls with fruit if i could do something like this..
Breakfast- bowl ... Snack- some grapes.. Lunch- something reasonable, turkey sandwich or something.. Snack- a banana.. And then Dinner- a bowl of special K. I'm 20 years old, 178 lbs, 5'5. I'm a college student and I usually eat mostly cereal anyway, but its something like fruit loops and its a huge bowl and then chips for snacks. I'm going to try this diet because it seems to be something that I could easily do.. I'm a cereal fanatic anyway...

Hi I eat my fruit as a snack if you buy the special k with red berries or creamy yogurty bits then you find that the cereal is more interesting i love the honey and oats Id like to know who lives in america and what kinds of special k you have over there?

yes actually you could do that lose you need to exercise at least 30 min a day i went on a diet for 6mths this is what i did i ate cereal for breakfast honey combs actually and for lunch a sand or lean cusine dinner something baked i went to gym 30 min a day then 1 hour and it seem like it took forever on weekends i went out to eat nice fat food and people said diet through week then eat whatever on weekends its not possible to lose weighht but i did 38 pounds lighter now i am over weight again years latter because i had a baby so i thought about doing special k morning and lunch then lean cusine for dinner good luck

I'm fourteen and I've been on this special K Diet for almost 2 months now. I eat two bowls a day (one for breakfast and dinner) each with either sliced Banana or Strawberries. Let me be the first to say I was always a little heavy. Now I'm getting thin all thanks to this diet. I do cheat on it here and there eating maybe a not so healthy third meal such as fries and Chicken tenders, but i know once in awhile its okay. An important thing to remember though on this diet is eat Lots of fruit! I have been eating nothing but fruit when i want a snack and it taste good and is good for you too! Good luck to all who try it and Remember you need to not cheat and be dedicated to losing the weight! :D

I've been on the special k diet now for about two months, i have 12 pounds. I have always eaten cereal for breakfast, so it was just a matter of replacing a regular meal for lunch with cereal.

Since starting the diet, my appetite has decreased and smaller serving sizes fill me up. I also do not crave junk food any more, just regular food. I get my regular food for dinner each day. I do not feel deprived of anything. I think the special k diet is great, I plan to stay on it until I lose about 15-20 more pounds, which should be approx 3 more months.

I am a 34 year old mother with one teenage son. We are starting this diet tomorrow, because we are both overweight. We have been exercising 3-4 times a week for the last four months. We do activities like spinning class (60 min. per session), treadmill, elliptical, and basketball. We both are over 200 lbs. The pain that we both experience from insensitive people is excrutiating. We plan to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and lean protein with the plan for dinner. Neither one of us have lost any weight from just exercising and we are struggling with food issues. I will check back in with everyone on day 10 to let you know how we are doing.

Hello everyone. I have been on the special k for a week now. Im loveing it! I feel so much better than what I use to. Last time I went to the dr I was weighing 182, I knew I had to do something but couldnt change my eating habits. I always ate junk food. Breakfast would be a debbie cake every day, coffee all day long loaded with creamer. I ate fast food almost everyday. Drink soft drinks in between. I love chocolate. I work in drapery and ulphostery so my job is either standing in one spot most of the day or just sitting at a sewing machine. So I dont have much time to exercise. Plus I have Fibromyalgia and im just not able to do much activity in a days time. So thats why I would eat most fast foods in the evening because I would be too tired and in too much pain to come home and cook a dinner. Then last sunday I had to go to the grocery store, I was on the cereal isle and started looking at special k and saw all the different cereal they have out now. When I saw the chocolatey delight I got very excited and grabbed a box and read what the plan was. I was like wow I can eat my sweets most of the day and still lose weight??!!?? So I went and found the snack bars and saw they had chocolate in those also! I love cereal and use to eat it as a night time snack. All the ones like I use to eat as a kid though. So I said I would give this a try. I started on June 22nd, didnt have a scale so I dont know what my weight was the day i started I just knew a few months ago I was at 182 and my height is 5'2 so I was in the obese range. On wednesday my husband notice a difference in my waist, so I went out and bought a scale and I was down to 176. So I said I would keep up with my weight lost from the day I got the scale. Today is 1 week later and I am now 165!! :) I use to never drink water and now I drink it all day long until dinner and I will drink a soft drink. I still allow myself 1 a day. So I think most of my weight lost this fast must have came from water weight. But hey thats still weight off of my body! My jeans are looser on me. I would always have to walk around with them unbutton most of the day because they would hurt my waist. But not now! Im very happy with the special k it has made a big life change for me in just a weeks time. And also, my husband and 2 teens are losing weight also and they arent dieting. I have a box of honey comb and frosted flakes and they wont even touch them because they like the flavors of the special k. They eat my snack bars also. I switched my white bread to wheat, whole milk to skim, dukes mayo to dukes light, (1) 2 liter of mountain dew a day is all thats allowed in the house. Went from regular cheese to fat free. I bake or grill my meats. I still have french fries but I bake them in the oven now. My daughter has went from 151 to 148 in just a few days, husband has went from 215 to 203 in a week, son who is ADHD and very active has went from 190 to 187. So for those who doesnt think it works trust me it does! I have had no craveings for sweets because im eating so much sweet during the day that im ready for a meal when evening comes. I tried the special k diet last summer and it worked fine for me. I also exercised. I walked 3 miles per day 5/6 days per week. I lost 17 pounds in 2 months. I'm going to start back on it tomorrow. I did not get tired of the cereals. I ate fruits and the special k bars in between meals if I got hungry. The weight took a while to come back but yet, I still did not gain all of it back. It's up to you and what you are willing to do to get the weight off and keep it off. The cereal will not do it alone. It does take discipline.

My son and I started the special K diet on 07/02/08. He and I have both lost 2 lbs. so far. I was almost in tears, because neither one of us could get the needle to move on the scale except in the other direction. I changed the plan slightly and we eat cereal for breakfast with fruit and soy milk, a big healthy lunch, and cereal for dinner. We are still hanging in there with exercise and in fact, our spinning class is improving our endurance. I just bought a treadmill and I can't wait for it to be delivered. I told my son we would walk on the treadmill everyday in addition to other exercises. We do not feel hungry, because we eat a good healthy lunch with the snack products and fruit. Also, we added a fiber supplement each meal. I will check in with everyone again next week.

I have been on Special K Diet for quite awhile now. I tried it cause they said that you can lose weight by eating this. I became obsessed just eating cereal all day, everyday. Up to this point that's all I've been eating. I used to weigh 110 lbs and it dropped down to 97-98 lbs. It really works, though sometimes I have cravings. Like right now, haha a vegetarian burrito sounds good. I don't do much exercise but I do walk alot.

I ate cereal (special k, plain rice krispies, plain cheerios, wheat chex, etc.) for 3 meals a day and within 4 months i dropped 3 sizes in jeans and have kept it off for the past 9 months and still going strong. Now i still eat cereal in the morning but have salads and chicken for lunch and dinner. All my snacks are fruit, veggies, yogurt, or almonds and I do about 2 hours of cardio each day.

I am on day 10 of the special k diet and have lost about 4-5 lbs (without exercise). While I do not believe this is a good long term diet I think it's a great "jump start." I feel more confident and in control of how much I'm eating and thrilled that I am enjoying fruit as a daily snack. I plan to start working out more and continue dieting & eating healthy in general. I say give it a shot if you enjoy the taste of the special k foods and want an easy, short-term diet that does not require too much planning, etc. Also - drinking water only (and the occasional coffee with skim milk no sugar) which I think helps. And keep that 3rd meal as healthy/reasonable as possible!

Hey, I'm Josiee. I'm 15 and for the last 2 weeks and 4 days me and mom have stuck to the special k diet. My health and social care teacher at college told me it didn't work, however we've totally proved her wrong. My mom has lost an amazing 36 pounds in that time limit and I've lost 23 pounds. All we do it eat special k for breakfast and tea, for lunch we have a normal sized meal such as a jacket potato, or pasta, also we tend to eat a special k bar through out the day. I don't get bored of the special k diet because there are so many special k cereals to choose from. It's great! I don't see myself as overweight but I still want to have that perfect look! GO FOR THE SPECIAL K DIET,, IT WORKSS.

I'm a retail manager who often see regular customers. This gal who I havent seen in a year came into my store today looking very very good. A year ago this woman stood about 5ft 3in. and weighed about 240 pounds. She looked amazing today -- flat stomach, she lost her big chest, face was thin. Very nice. She told me she went on the "Special K Diet". Because she was a large woman she ate 1 cup of cereal for breakfast, snack, then lunch. For dinner she only ate portions no bigger than her fist. WOW! I'm going to the store and picking up a few dozen boxes myself!

I've been on the Special K diet for the 2nd time. The first time I lost 3 inches off my waist line. Then I quit the diet. Now this is my 3rd day and I've already lost 5 pounds. I eat fresh veggies and 2 bowls a day and I walk my dog daily. I dont know,every body has different bodies and matabolisms. I love Special K. Not a fan of the varieties--too much sugar. I eat 1 cup as they recommend.

Ive been on this diet for about 2 week but have already got extra boxes to keep going!! Im losing a pound every other day and feel great!, I workout just doing my recommended 10,000 steps a day I have a weight watchers dessert 3 times a week as my treat as they taste divine and only have 150 calories each for a good sized treat, I have four meals a day two normal bowls of cereal then two bowls of fruit till Im full then during the day Ill have 2-3 snacks which are the special k bars they have new flavours that are very yummy like raspberry and dark chocolate!! only 99 calories!

I'm 18 years old n just about a year ago I weighed 135 pounds looking great because I'm tall but I went to college n now I weigh 175 pounds n I was just diagnosed with thyroides which is suppost to be the reason I gained so much weight but I've been on the treatment for a month and I still weigh the same...I'm going to start this diet on monday n see how it works out, ill keep u guys posted...if anyone knows of a diet that might work for me please reply to this comment...

I am going to start the diet today as well. I'm a bit nervous. I have celiac disease and was never overweight until i had to take gluten (wheat) out of my diet. This cereal does have wheat in it. But I exercise daily and watch what I eat and I see myself gaining weight. I am willing to try something that will potentially hurt me, and stop at the end of the diet, if I can start getting me back.

Oy.
