Buy More Diet Products... Why Should I?
There are days I am overwhelmed by the number of products that are peddled, pushed, and promoted - all in the name of losing weight. There is some good stuff out there. But the sheer volume and frequency of new "things" is mind-numbing. Particularly as there is not really any new thing at all - but the same information and ideas tirelessly re-packaged.
Every single day many comments are deleted from this blog. These comments amount to nothing but thinly-disguised sales-pitches. It seems everyone has got something to sell. There's nothing wrong at all with having a business, and what better way to earn your income than by helping people?
But what would happen if every single commercial diet product, potion, program were to suddenly vanish? Right now. Would it make any difference at all?
If I were to take a punt at what to spend money on - I would say, forget the endless new books, the newfangled gimmicks, or the latest diets. Spend money on behavioral coaching/counselling and good food. Eat less and exercise more will always be the answer - but the outworking of this will require some help. Spend money on tools and skills to enable you to accomplish this.
The trouble is, who do you trust?

That is so true, you want to make a buck, put the word diet on it. I do like reviewing all of the diet gadgets though. I don't like being confused and too much to choose from presents that problem. I just don't trust the repercussions that could happen, that sometimes are not found out until a very long period of time. You see it in the field of medication many times. I'm thinking cost overhead here. Why spend so much money on diet foods that need to be produced, when the foods listed from the pryamid are natural, less expensive, taste better, more reliable, and can be programmable to fit only you. Each one of us is individually different.
ReplyMost "diet" pills are pretty much the same, I think...a combo of a stimulant, a laxative, a diuretic, and some herbs to make it sound like an ancient Asian formulation. Different companies put different spins on it and market it and make tons of money. When sales slip, they can change the formulation a bit and call it "New and Improved".
And diet food pretty much means it has either no sugar or no fat. Pretty soon (maybe it's already happened) there will be a "diet" version of everything out there. And companies can charge extra for it because it's "diet".
Jim's right...nothing ever really changes or is new, it's all just new marketing techniques.
ReplyGood point on the post above and the reply from the first person. The only thing I gotta say is fruits and vegt. aren't as cheap anymore. They are costly in all truth but if u buy those bars they probably cost a bit more overall for a week, depending on the type. From all the things coming out right now it seems organic is better and raw unprocesssed is better than processed (with higg fructose corn syrup) and steriod altered, dangerous pesticide fruits and vegt, eggs, meats, etc. If u really got the money it seems better. I don't really think it matters as much with fruits or vegts. I can't recall where I read a report on is it really better to get organic for some categories of food - oh, yeah it was in men's health journal.
ReplyI have to join in with you on this, Jim. I'd like to have all the money back I've spent over the years on books about diets.
ReplyI'm glad I finally realized that diet is a four-letter word, and just started eating right and moving more. It works, and it doesn't cost me a bunch of money!
The only "diet" food that I use is Diet Coke. This is an addiction. This time I'm eating regular foods. Diet foods are just small portions, you can do that on your own. They cost more. If I hear of some wonder diet item I'll pay attention, but there isn't one out there now.
ReplySorry for the negative rant. Sometimes the unending attempts to promote the same old diet products becomes tiresome.
Vern - I agree - but, as a previous commenter notes, decent food does cost more. Sure you can get hold of basic staples such as oats etc quite cheaply - but organic fruit and veg? now that's a different story.
ReplyI agree that it can get old.
This whole "low fat" thing is kinda ridiculous in my opinion. Ok, I'm going to eat fat free foods, I'll start drinking beer and cokes because they are fat free! Throw some extra sugar in there, its fat free! This dressing is low fat, let me just use about 2 cups on my salad...
It really is about calories in vs calories out. Eat less, exercise more. It's hard to accept, I know, I wished for an easier way for a long time, but there isn't one. No pills, no miracle foods, nothing.
Personally, I feel more satisfied eating less of the real thing than gorging on 'diet' stuff. It's about making changes you can live with for ever. Now I love chinese food, beer, coke, etc. I couldn't just decide to never have any of these things again. So, I just eat chinese less often, only have a few beers on weekends, and a coke every once in a while. This is a change I can live with forever.
I still need to get into the habit of eating breakfast. By lunch time I'm hungry and have to control myself not to over eat. I'm trying to start having 2 eggs and a slice of whole wheat toast every morning.
How do you have your oats? Plain? I always see people eating oats in a healthy lifestyle, but never really understood in what way the used them.
ReplyI lost 56lb 5 years ago only to put 28 of them back on when I gave up smoking 2 years ago. In the last 2 years I have tried again and again to diet and am still the same weight.
I have finally decided that dieting does not work for me and although it is a big relief to stop and eat normal food, the lack of control that I feel after years of logging what I eat can be a little scary! I am enjoying eating full fat but healthy foods ensuring I get enough good fats, fruit and veg and feel so much healthier for it.
The weight loss has yet to come but getting off the diet treadmill is a start. My next goal is to start moving more, I was doing quite a bot of exercise about 6 months ago but it has gradually trailed off.
I hope that in general people start moving away from the damaging 'diet' mentality but I have a feeling that it will only get worse as it is such a big industry.
Oats - I have them with milk for porriage or add them to my home made museli. I love oats and flapjack is my favourite but I make it rarely as it is too tempting to eat the lot!
ReplyIt can be hard to buy healthy food on a budget, but it can be done. I shop at Aldi and I get produce for a very reasonable price. And a box of oatmeal cost literally pennies a serving, as opposed to processed cereals. I buy frozen boneless chicken breasts when they are on sale and I buy frozen veggies if the fresh ones are too expensive. Fruits...I buy them in season and if money's tight, bananas are super cheap. Canned tuna in water and eggs are good cheap protein. Drink skim milk...it's fat free AND it's cheapest at the store.
ReplyOats? I cook'em in the microwave for breakfast. I add rice milk and throw in a bit of Stevia for sweetening. That sounds a bit overly picky I guess.
I used to mix flavored whey protein in with the oats (after cooking). That was tasty. However at that time I was overdoing the dairy a bit (that's another story)...
ReplyI think the biggest problem is lack of knowledge and disinformation. And while there's a lot of knowledge available on the web, there's even more "junk" that's not meant for truth, but for profit.
And yes, it is tough to "filter" all that junk. You need a point of reference where you can start from. For example:
You may have noticed that the fundamental ingredient of more than 95% weight loss supplements is green tea. Green tea makes your metabolism go faster. Your resting heartrate goes form 59 to 63. Thus you start burning maybe 8% more calories daily, that is, 120-150 kcal. The same effect can be achieved with 5-7 min. jogging (incluiding "afterburn"). Congratulations, you just replaced 95% of weight loss supplements.
As Nathan already said: It's all about calories in/out balance.
ReplyThere's a concept we all need to know; "life time value of a customer". That means, how much you will buy of - for example - diet foods after you have made the initial purchase, or signed up for the diet club.
It would be difficult to overstate what a cheat these 'diet foods' are, viciously overpriced for what they are, bland and full of chemicals, but holding out the hope that they are magic foods that will make you thin. These outfits can provide all sorts of inexpensive-sounding things: meetings, counselling, and so on, once they have got you started buying their 'diet products'. It's a scam.
Replyi totally agree with you and up until very recently had vowed never to try another product or diet again- tried too many products to mention and diet including atkins and weightwatchers.. recently however all that has changed! i started noticing many of my friends literally melting away and when i asked them they all responded with the same answer: LighterLife. i'm about to start my journey with lighterlife and have so much faith that this diet will be successful that i have started a blog dedicated to tracking my success. come track my success and support me at http://suesse-mylighterlife.blogspot.com/! hey remember- this is not a sales pitch! i dont get anything if people do this diet or not.. i just understand what it feels like to be desperate to lose weight and finding no way of doing so.
good luck and happy slimming!
ReplySuesse - I've let this comment through - for now. As you can imagine the comments feature is abused on a daily basis by those looking to promote a product or website.
Sometimes it is simply 'viral' marketing - with no direct financial benefit, but the building of a brand. It is still self-promotion however.
ReplyNathan-a couple of ways to have oatmeal---1/2 c. to 1 c. water with a dash of salt--put in micro approx. 2 min.s I put mine in 2.30. Then, sometimes, I put in 2 tbls. of peanut butter and have a 1/2 c. of skim milk to add and 2-3 packs of splenda. That can usually last you for a while and you can lessen the p. butter to 1 tbls. or 2 tsps. Kerry
Replydiet is a scam. just eat right, cut down on those prepackaged goodies and sodas.
the weight will melt off in a while.
it's a strange weight loss to if you're not active and sit all day working on the computer.
first you will lose weight.. very small amount.. then put alot on... then.. centuries later... (for me it took half a year (sticking to the diet that is) suddenly (i had given up checking on my weight said the hell with it i'm eating right so that's all i need) i began to have trouble with my clothes.. getting larger.. larger.. looking better.. mid section getting WAY SOFT AND PLYABLE... was like. oh well wait a holdit let me see..
i lost 40 pounds just like that.
i feel better.. don't feel suffocated, poisoned, fuzzy, dizzy, weak, tired, lazy.. it's ok.
diet is just small servings of mainly fresh produce, cereals.. soy milk blah blah.. no more sodas.
water, fresh juices or close to as fresh i can get..
crap like that. nothing big deal nothing to write home about just stopped the frozen dinners, snacks, fast food... anything else prepackaged... sodas....
bang all gone now.
