Goodbye KFC
KFC has more than 11,000 outlets in 80 countries. There is just one problem: bird flu.
For many months now we've been completely set-up by over-zealous reporting of the impending doom. I am no prophet and truly have no idea what may or may not happen. The great irony is that in many developing countries, people are already dying from preventable illnesses and malnutrition by the thousands - however there is no great panic about that.

French Flu Fear
Despite reassurances that it is safe to eat cooked poultry, sales in France have dropped by up to 30%.At this point France has some sick birds. What will happen when there a sick people (where there is a 50% chance of surviving the influenza virus)?
Japan and Hong Kong have already placed embargoes on French imports of poultry.
Where will this lead? I would imagine that outlets like KFC - who specialize in chicken - are facing a grim future indeed. French president Chirac tried to reassure consumers by gobbling down some cooked chicken in front of the press. Unfortunately there has been over a year's worth of scaremongering - and as Chirac says "Unfortunately you can see a completely unjustified sort of total panic developing".
Goodbye KFC?
Can you even get bird flu from eating chicken? It was my impression that you had to be around live poultry that had the virus in order to catch it. Maybe I'm wrong. Now googling to find out the truth....
ReplyQ. How do you catch bird flu?
FAQ
From Jerry Kennard,
Your Guide to Men's Health.
A.It can only be caught by touching infected birds or their fecal matter. Those who are most at risk are people who work on farms and in animal markets. The virus is not killed by freezing the chicken or bird so there is the potential to catch bird virus from chickens purchased from infected countries prior to January 1st 2005. A number of countries are therefore banning exports of them until the outbreak is contained.
There are concerns that bird flu virus is mutating. If the virus changes, mutates, and is able to be transmitted by human to human contact then fears of a world wide pandemic become a reality.
There have been a few isolated cases of people believed to have caught Avian flu from a person with the virus; however these cases are unconfirmed.
ReplyPrecisely - the H5N1 virus is (apparently) killed when the chicken is cooked. But this hasn't stopped the French from suddenly buying 30% less poultry.
ReplyKFC has so much chicken in the deep freeze, there will be no hiccups for chicken once the flu comes.
ReplyRelax! (for the time being) Currently only birds get bird flu from one another...and have not transmitted it to humans.
The concern is that one day the flu may develope into another form of virus and infect humans...but that has NOT yet happened. When it/If it does...THEN we can panic about a pendemic.
Until then...if you see a bird with the flu...just give it some asprin and chicken soup. Second thought, probably not a good idea.
ReplyKFC can hold a great business only if they support Organic free-ranged chicken, and not deep-fry them anymore. I tell them, throw away that poisonous vegtable oil and use palm or coconut oil for baking instead. Make sure that instead of fries, have some sauteed vegtables in a cup instead. That way, you can still have that juicy, nutricious chicken instead.
ReplyWow, I just thought that the high fat fried food in these restaurants were the problem. Now it's bird flu too. Can those germs live through high fat deep frying? Can we?
ReplyJust a quick note concerning James' post.... palm and cocnut oil have WAY too much Saturated Fat in them and are not good for you in much quantity. If you want to change oils, switch to olive or canola
