The Real Grapefruit Diet

The so-called grapefruit diet is one of those mythic fad diets that seem to come and go every few years. It is a terrible diet - very low in calories, nutrient deficient, and cannot be sustained beyond a matter of days. You might lose some water, some muscle, and a bit of fat - then gain it all back again.

In 2004 the Scripps Clinic made a press release claiming that the humble grapefruit does assist in fat loss. However the study seemed isolated, and it was unclear just how much support came from the Florida citrus industry body.

A further study has been undertaken, and has found that red grapefruit "significantly decreased blood levels of triglycerides." The grapefruit was consumed by patients who "had undergone coronary bypass surgery and had found that Zocor, or simvastatin, was ineffective." (to be published in this journal)

...the study's lead author, said that eating red grapefruit would "most probably" help anyone with high cholesterol, not just heart patients. The star ruby grapefruit has a yellow peel with a red blush and an intensely red pulp. It is very sweet, and has few or no seeds.
So what does this prove? That the grapefruit, like many other fruits and vegetables has excellent healthful properties.

There will, however, never be a quick-fix diet based on a single food. That's a fantasy.

Hi,
What's the longest a person can be on this diet. I see ppl on here saying they lost 65lbs in 4 months on this diet, but I didn't know you could do it for that long. Please advise...

It's a 12 day diet. I believe you can be on it as long as you want until you reach your goal, but you need to take a 2 day break between each cycle (The break helps to shock your metabolism when you go back on the diet). So when people say they have been on the diet for 4 months, they have likely done about 9 cycles in the 4 month span of time.

Ive been dieting for some time now and have to say that the rotating of diets seems to work for me. I tried the 6week body make over and it worked...dropped 30 pounds, switched to 2 courses of the cabbage soup diet...lost another 20. Now Im doing the grapefruit diet and I love it. This is really easy and seems to be successful. I have dropped 5 pounds in the last 3 days. I think this is my favorite diet of the three I have tried. I might stick with it and lose the last 50 lbs. on this one.

Hi Everyone Lucky to find this website.
To be very frank I had tried all moost all the diets, but not able to loose weight.
No reading all your comments I going to start GF Diet from tomorrow (May 8th, 2009). I am 169lbs and my goal is to reach 128lbs.
Before start my GF Diet I wnat to make sure that the grape fruit or Grape juice we have to drink before eating our meal or after we eat our meal.

It's Grapefruit juice, not to be confused with Grape juice. I alway take it before I eat my meal, and If I have time I try to eat/drink it 5-10 mins before my meal, If i dont have time I just eat it with my meal. Please make sure if you get the Grapefruit juice that it is 100% grapefruit and not diluted w/ water/sugar. I use Tropicana (Ruby Red) Grapefruit juice and rotate it with 1/2 Grapefruit. Hope that helps!

Hi Everyone,
I forget to ask from my yesterday posting that in the Grapefruit Diet we have eat Meat in ur lunch and dinner, and Egg in ur beakfast but my problem is that I'm totally vegetarian I can't eat meat and egg, but I can eat dairy products.
So, instead of meat and egg what else should I include in my Grapefruit Diet Plan with Salad in my lunch and dinner.
Plz Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm... I believe the basis around the Grapefruite diet is minimal Carbs and lots of protein. Essentailly you are trying to get your body to a state of Ketosis which results in your body eating up fat rather than carbs sugars because there is little to none in your diet. This is what causes rapid weight loss. Ketosis usually takes 3-4 days to occur. I am not a vegitarian and really dont know anyone who is, so I don't know what high protein-minimal carb options you have... Can you eat fish? That maybe an option... I would suggest going to the grocery store and checking the nutritional facts on the back of the packages to see what your options are. You wont technically be on the Grapefruite diet but rather a modification of it. I'm not an expert on this, but i would say as long as you are keeping you carbs minimal (20-100 grams/day) you should be good, and reach ketosis in a matter of days....

Oh, and on the same note of carbs, I believe the majority of carbs will be coming from the grapefruit. I thinks its around 20g/ serving

I can't even eat fish. But I will eat lots of tofu, sya, stir fry or raw vegetables. As soon as I will get the results I will post it.
Today is my second day on Grapefruit Diet Plan (May, 08,2009).

I began the grapefruit diet on May 4 - today is May 12 and I've lost a total of 5 lbs since. I'm hoping I lose 5 more before my 12 days are up. If i don't I have a feeling I'll be continuing for a while.

I was just wondering, would anyone know if you lose weight slower when your closer to ur goal? I'm 130 and my goal is 120ish. The last few lbs seem to be the hardest!

I'll be back to update once my 12 days are up!

Just like any diet or even excercise routin, the closer you are to your ideal weight the harder to lose the weight. You will hit a platue and usually you need to change what you are doing to over come it. I'm not sure if u are excercising along with your diet, but if not I am willing to bet that will do the trick, and if you have been exercising, then maybe you haven't been mixing up your workout routin enough or even pushing yourself hard enough to lose those last few pounds. I was at 150lbs when I started my the grapefruit diet, I am on day 10 now and have lost 5lbs. My goal is 130lbs. I will take the 2 day brake and start it up again. I'll let you know what my final numbers are in 2 days

Today (May 14th, 2009) is my 7th day on Grapefruit Diet and I lost 5 pounds. I start with 171 Pounds on May 8th, 2009 now I am 162 pounds. ).

Now I will post my weight on 19th May which is my last last (12th Day of my Grapefruit diet.

im back to give an update. i began at 136 and at the end of 10 days...i was at 129.4lbs. i didnt pull through for the entire 12 days...but i will be going back on the diet starting today.i need to lose another 10lbs. im pretty short...5'2. so my weight makes me look heavy.

So I just started a second cycle of grapefruit diet. Friday 5/15/09 was day 12 of my 1st cycle and I lost a total of 6 lbs putting me at 144lbs. saturday and sunday were my regular diet days, I am now starting second cycle of grape fruit diet. I will keep you all posted. My goal is 130lbs.

HI EVERYONE,
I COMPLETED MY 12 DAYS, AND I LOSS 7 POUNDS IN TOTAL. TO BE TRUE I STRICTLY DID MY DIETING ONLY FOR 9 DAYS. AFTER 9TH DAY WE HAD A FAMILY GET TOGETHER AND I EAT PIZZA, NACHOS, ETC.....
NOW I AM GOING TO START MY DIET AGAIN FROM TOMORROW (MAY20, 09). NOW I AM 167 POUNDS, MY GOAL IS TO REACH 130 POUNDS.

Well "peches" i didn't exactly followed the diet plan.

i did it as following

breakfast:
water
half grapefruit
any power bar or protein bar

lunch:
water
half grapefruit
salad with breast piece of chicken
just something with salad beans, beef, spinich,vegetables,but in small portions

dinner

water
half grapefruit
chicken with vegetables
or beef
or soup homemade

i just drank lot of water
and unsweetened green tea
also no bread of any kind and no rice of any kind

Yes that did help me. I know I wasn't suppose to weigh myself 4 five days but I have already lost 4lbs.

Start Date 5/22/09

Start Weight 219
Goal Weight 150

I drank a little over a gallon of water daily. Water is key :-)


Here are some more volume conversions

8 oz per cup, 2 cups per pint, 2 pints per quart, 4 quarts per gallon.
1 gallon = 4 quarts
4 quarts = 8 pints
8 pints = 16 cups
16 cups = 128 ounces

no not really.

just regular stuff like cleaning house and cooking.

but thinking about doing 30 mins of running, as soon as the rain stops i;ll starting running. or at least walking.

but nothing now.

and yea i have cheated a lot.

Well I am excited!!!!!!!!!!! I am not going to weigh until next Monday. The scales are lethal for me. If I have lost then I think I can cheat and if I've stayed on my diet perfectly, then I'm upset that I haven't lost more. :-) Sooooooooooo, I'm staying clear of them. I completed my first day and feel great already.

This diet is honestly a good diet I think. We can do this. Miss Cassie, I know you had to be from the South as I felt a kindred spirit. I'm from Kentucky. Go Cards! I'[m going to D.C. for 5 days and leaving June 27th. Want to get 10 off by then.

Good luck fellow GF plan eaters. Weekends are tough but we are tougher. Hang in there!!!!!!!!

Well I'm going to try this out. I bought 3 grapefruits now and just to save money I'm going to eat half of a grapefruit a day. I think I'll help myself prevent horrible consequences by eating healthy, drinking water and green tea, eggs, and other vegetables and just living my life like normally. I don't plan to give up any food that I've always eaten, just breaking it down. This should help prevent low blood sugar and other stuff, right?

Hi, my name is Felicia and I live in Philadelphia,Pa, current weight 218 lbs - goal 190 lbs. This 12 GF diet dose work, I did it back in 1998 when I got married. I did 2 - 12 day intervals and I lost about 18-20lbs, however I tried doing it throughout the years and wasn't able to stick to it. I just started back on the diet yesterday and I'm now on day 2, it's not easy but I'm determined to stick to it and do about 3 intervals of the diet(12 days for 3 sessions), I just have to stay focused on the goal. I'll update my results when I hit day 5 or 6.

How long did it take you to see results?
Does it really work or is it just a waste of time and money?

Hi i am really upset, i tried this and it didnt even work i was 185 pounds and the very next month i was at 210 pounds i tried to do my best infact i skipped a meal every week nothing woked and i am so very upset i thought that this would help i guess i was wrong THIS DOESNT WORK :(

Hey,
I have a few questions maybe someone wouldnt mind helping me.

Questions:
Can i have cheese with my meal?

On some sites it says I can have a little bread like in the morning a slice and no other carbs the rest of the day is that ok? Sometimes I dont have time to make breakfast so i grab some bread so is that going to affect me from losing weight?

Also, it says i can drink coffee can i put some milk in it or half and half. If i dont follow the diet EXACTLY how it says wil i not lose weight?

What i've been doing is eating either eggs with bacon/sausage or getting a crossant in the morning. For lucnh and dinner its just meat with salad/veggies. And grapefruit juice with all of them. And usually on school days (I'm a college student) I have coffee with half and half. This is my third day so before i keep going I'm wondering if what I'm doing will make me lose weight even though I'm not doing it exactly as I should.

*I hope someone is going to actually read this because i know i wrote alot but if anyone helps me i would really appreciate it. Thank you
