The Real Grapefruit Diet
The so-called grapefruit diet is one of those mythic fad diets that seem to come and go every few years. It is a terrible diet - very low in calories, nutrient deficient, and cannot be sustained beyond a matter of days. You might lose some water, some muscle, and a bit of fat - then gain it all back again.
In 2004 the Scripps Clinic made a press release claiming that the humble grapefruit does assist in fat loss. However the study seemed isolated, and it was unclear just how much support came from the Florida citrus industry body.
A further study has been undertaken, and has found that red grapefruit "significantly decreased blood levels of triglycerides." The grapefruit was consumed by patients who "had undergone coronary bypass surgery and had found that Zocor, or simvastatin, was ineffective." (to be published in this journal)
...the study's lead author, said that eating red grapefruit would "most probably" help anyone with high cholesterol, not just heart patients. The star ruby grapefruit has a yellow peel with a red blush and an intensely red pulp. It is very sweet, and has few or no seeds. So what does this prove? That the grapefruit, like many other fruits and vegetables has excellent healthful properties.
There will, however, never be a quick-fix diet based on a single food. That's a fantasy.
really??? so, when did you start to see results?.. I started it on Monday and I am hoping to see some type of weight loss by Oct. 31

ReplyHi Guys, Today is 11/9/2008 and it is my first day on the "Grapefruit Diet". I feel ok, But I am really craving some carbs right now! But, I am not going to cheat! I really need to lose the weight! It is about time! No more procrastination for me! I will definately keep you guys updated!
Starting Weight: 220 LBS, 11/9/2008
Wish Me Luck! And thanks for posting your successes! It makes it all the more encouraging!!!
ReplyI began drinking about a 1/2 cup of grapefruit juice before every meal about 2 weeks ago. I started off weighing 220 lbs. Now I am 213 lbs. I do not exercise a lot. In fact, I have only walked about 20 min. 2-3 times a week. I plan on increasing the time as my endurance builds up. Oh, by the way I have not been starving myself. I still enjoy some foods I like, but I do not overindulge.
Replywell your not really suppose to excersise on this diet.
ReplyOk, so today is 11/21/2008 and I weigh 210 lbs! I've lost 10 lbs! I am in shock! This diet really works! I am a testiment to that! I have to admit though that I did cheat a little. I had two tablespoons of brown rice with my salad at lunchtime! Just the fact of knowing that there was rice in the food, made me feel "ok". But I still managed to lose 10 lbs! Today is my first "day off" and I had regular food, just not too much and still drinking my graperuit juice before my meals and also after and when I get thirsty during the day! (I'm having some right now!).
What I did though was, I bought regular grapefruits at the fruit stand (3 for $1.00). So I got like 15 grapefruits ($5.00) and I invested in a citrus juicer, ($15.00) and I juice my own grapefruits! I get a large bottle and a half filled! It is so worth it! At least I know it's fresh, there's no preservatives and it is not sweetened! It is so good!
I will continue to keep you guys posted! Also, google low carb recipes, I'm positive you will be able to find lovely dishes you can create for lunch and dinner!

ReplyHi, This is my 7th day on the grapefruit diet and I've only lost 3 pounds. I don't know if to give up or continue. I made a few revisions on the diet though and was wondering if it was affecting the weight loss. Instead of bacon, I am eating ham in the morning because bacon makes me sick. The nutritional content is very similar. Also, instead of a coffee, I am drinking one diet coke a day.
Does anyone think these changes are affecting the weight loss?
ReplyInstead of diet coke, you should do tea since you don't like coffee. One of the rules with the diet is to follow it exactly as it is. Trying not to stray from it. Good luck!
Replyyes you would be suprised but ham and bacon are different even though they come from a pig. It is something in the bacon that works very very well with the grapefruit. Those are the main things that you should not miss or skip along with the salads. So bacon, salads and grapefruit dont skip or change

ReplyHey everyone! Tomorrow morning I will be starting the diet and I will let you know how my progress goes! I work out every day for about 40 minutes and I have been trying to get back into my gymnast shape so I can start training soon. I am 19 so it gets harder to get to where I once was, but hopefully this will be a jump start to what my body used to be
ReplyBy the way, tomorrow will be--- January 3rd, 2008!! =]

ReplyI started the diet today 1/10/09. I had a headache all day, but I stuck with it. Actually I didn't find it hard to stick with the diet today. Due to my headaches I only worked out 20 min. I hope tomorrow goes better!
ReplyHey guys I started this diet on 1/08/09 and I lost 6 lbs in the first week. The first two days were tough because I was eating really bad before I started so I felt super hungry. But now I only get a little hungry and I have tons of energy. I don't know why people nock this diet because you're eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day wich is alot more than most people do. Also you're getting alot of protein wich is good too. Stick with it I'm seeing results already! Good luck!
Replyooops I meant to say I started on 01/01/09! :)
ReplyI started this diet last Monday, January 12, 2009. I have lost 6.6 pounds since then - only 6 days! Like almost everyone else who has tried this diet, it was really difficult for the first couple of days, chock full of headaches and exhaustion. I learned this past weekend that I should not drink coffee - for some reason it hindered my weight loss for the weekend even though I took it black. I think I'm be doing a totally of four 12-day cycles in order to lose some weight before I get married. After I come off of the diet, I plan to start a diet that introduces more food variety but is very low in carbs.
Thanks for everyone's input, this website has helped me feel more confident about what I'm doing - and good luck to all. You can do it. TRUST ME - if can, so can you. I'm a nanny and am around sweets for the kids all day every day. Just ignore the sugar and fixate on your cute future :)
ReplyI heard you are not suppose to have caffeine intake too. However, the headaches were impossible for me to deal with. So what I do is drink a half a cup in the morning and maybe half a cup at supper, depending on how I am feeling. So far it works for me, but everyone is different.
Replyim go to start the grapefruit diet to you guys because im over weight and ive heard nothing but positive things about the plan. Im 14 and 240 pounds and i want to get down to 170 or 180 to live a healthy life and i recommend every try it. =)
ReplyGood luck. keep us posted.
ReplyI started to diet today, 1/22/08. My bf's mom went on the diet and lost 54 pounds over a couple of months. She recommended it to me.
My weight now is at 146.5 (I'm 5'2) so I need to lose at least 20 pounds. I want to get back into the 120 range. I've been a size 2 jeans nearly all of my life, but recently I'm pushing an 8...Which I feel is big since I'm short.
Today the diet hasn't been so bad. But of course, I'm having carb cravings (which I'll take care of on my 2 day break from the diet with a small bowl of pasta).
Lucky for me I like veggies and salad, since that's what I'll be eating for awhile!
Best of luck to everyone! I'll keep the board updated :-)
Replyhow much meat and salad do you eat
ReplyYou're supposed to eat as much salad and meat as you can, until you are full.
I had to actually go off of the diet because it triggered my migraines.
ReplyHope everyone else has better luck than I did! Its a quite simple diet to follow. Wish it had worked out better for me!
I am on my third (12 day cycle) I started out being 284 this morning (after my 2 days off) I weighed 270. Now when i weigh myself tomarrow I know I will lose around 5 pounds of water due to it being my first day back from 2 days off. i love this diet. I feel better my clothes fit better. And one other thing, its nice to see progress when I get on the scales. I am probably eatin better and more nutrious on this diet than I normally would. and i am def getting enough water intake now. Don't let others bring you down. The grapefruit rocks!!!!!!
ReplyWhat can you have to drink on this diet?
ReplyI'm getting married in May 2009 and just want to lose a couple pounds and hopefully change my eating habits. This seems like a great way to kick-off changing your eating habits b/c you will see results and even if you don't like grapefruit you will like seeing progress- and because of progress, you will be more mindful of your eating habits and lifestyle because you like the results (Even if you don't stick with the diet)
I plan on starting today--Hey-What do I have to lose?... besides pounds! Plus the support from others from this website and having a positive attitute will always keep you motivated. I will keep you posted!
A lady at my job (noticeably)lost a lot of weight in a few weeks and introduced the grapefruit diet to me--so it just might work.
Replymy co-workers and i started the Grapefruit Diet on 02-09-09. We are on day two of this diet and we're doing so well. Replydid u continue on with the diet? if so how much did u lose, and are u having trouble keeping the weight off?
ReplyHi I have been on the diet on and off for about 1 month now not really sticking to it. I have lost some weight though but I really need to lose about 20 pounds in 1 1/2 months. Im in a wedding and I really dont have a choice I cant fit in my bridesmaid dress anymore well mainly in the bust area. I read in one of the grapefruit diet plans that you can drink 1 cup of coffee with your dinner well i work graveyard shift so i drink about 2 to 3 cups. I do everything else just like i suppose to.I need to know what you guys think about my coffee drinking and will it knock the whole diet out the box
ReplyThe Grapefruit diet works!!!!!!I tried it on 2/22/09. By day five I had lost exactly four pounds. I also cheated with Batman snacks and brownies 3 days. I am starting again today, and am committed to sticking to only whats on the diet. After being off the diet for the last two days, I have still managed to keep off 2 of the four pounds I lost. I am going to WIN this!!!!!!!! Goal weight is 135 pounds. WE CAN DO IT! Will post again after the twelve days are up!!!!!!!!1
ReplyI started this diet 2/23/09, this is my fourth day, I'm not seeing any weightloss yet, but I will keep you guys posted. Starting weight is 160 (I'm only 5'2) I would like to get down to 135, so we'll see!
ReplyOkay on to day five got on the scale this AM and lost a total of 3 pounds, honestly I was expecting more (I've excercised every day), but will stick to it and see what happnes at the end of day 12.
Reply3/03/2009 I'm 5 pounds down. Honestly I feel it's going slowly but hopefully on Saturday (the start of my 2 days off - YES) I'll be down another 5 at least.
ReplyHi Guys!
I am 26, 5ft9 and weigh 11 stone two... I really want to get to ten stone (loss of 16lbs) I am starting this diet tomorrow.
ReplyI am thoroughly determined and certain I can do it!
I will let you know each day what I weigh.
I don't know if I'll lose 10lbs because I don't have a huge excess of weight to start with (technically not overweight) but I'll keep you posted...
good luck!
Right! 11th march 2009
ReplySo DAY 1, I got on the scales and my weight is actually 11.3, not 11.2 as I had previously thought...

ReplyWas good today, so hopefully I can get on track again!
here goes...
Starting the grapefruit diet 3/23/09. Im 5 feet at 131. I want to lose between 15-20 pounds. Will keep you posted. Wish me luck!
ReplyI did the grapefruit diet a year ago, for one month. I lost 25 pounds and incorporated a work out program and lost 25 more pounds. Even after I stopped the diet I never gained the weight back. If you are interested in this diet you should try it. If you feel bad while you are doing it then stop. Find the diet that works for you. This one worked for me and now my husband and I are doing it again. You dont have to eat so unhealthy as is sometimes described in this diet. You can eat more vegetables- thats what I did.
ReplyToday is my first day on the diet (4/2/09). I'm 23, 5'5, initial weight: 143.5 lbs. It's 9pm and I found it a little trying during the day, not eating between meals. Also.... I had a few questions that I haven't been able to find the answers for. Can I use olive oil to cook the veggies in, or just butter? Also, it says to eat until you are stuffed but after I had 2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon I was hungry 2 hours later... if we are not supposed to eat between meals, can I eat more than that for breakfast, sticking to the designated breakfast foods? Good luck to everyone! I'm excited about this!!
ReplyToday is my first day on this diet. I have a 4 yr old daughter whose father was killed two years ago. Iam currently 100 lbs overweight and desperate to lose it, because if i dont im scared i wont be here much longer. Iam very excited and motivated!! Good luck to everyone!!!
Replyi've been on this diet for 4 days and im down 6 lbs, however i hate eating the eggs in the morning, can i substitute the eggs for something else?
