The Real Grapefruit Diet
The so-called grapefruit diet is one of those mythic fad diets that seem to come and go every few years. It is a terrible diet - very low in calories, nutrient deficient, and cannot be sustained beyond a matter of days. You might lose some water, some muscle, and a bit of fat - then gain it all back again.
In 2004 the Scripps Clinic made a press release claiming that the humble grapefruit does assist in fat loss. However the study seemed isolated, and it was unclear just how much support came from the Florida citrus industry body.
A further study has been undertaken, and has found that red grapefruit "significantly decreased blood levels of triglycerides." The grapefruit was consumed by patients who "had undergone coronary bypass surgery and had found that Zocor, or simvastatin, was ineffective." (to be published in this journal)
...the study's lead author, said that eating red grapefruit would "most probably" help anyone with high cholesterol, not just heart patients. The star ruby grapefruit has a yellow peel with a red blush and an intensely red pulp. It is very sweet, and has few or no seeds.So what does this prove? That the grapefruit, like many other fruits and vegetables has excellent healthful properties.
There will, however, never be a quick-fix diet based on a single food. That's a fantasy.
I started this diet on 8/27/07 and I have lost 12.6 lbs. I cheated twice because of Labor day and I went out with friends ( i didn't overeat, but I had several beers)It seems like it only set me back a couple of pounds. Overall it works for me because I like meat and vegetables anyway. I will keep you posted on my results.
ReplyI started this diet on 9-9-07 and I've lost 10lbs. No cravings at all. My friend started on 5-15-07 and has lost a total of 65 lbs. This diet really works. I have cheated a couple of times this weeks and still have lost 10 lbs in 6 days and I feel great!! I have a lot more energy. One suggestions also,,,,,,GNC.com sells the Grapefruit Diet pills,,,,it's like grapefruit in a pill,,,,90 pilss for 9.99. I've been using these when juice is not available and the diet still works. Alot of people can't drink grapefruit juice all the time, so the pills can be substituted with the same results. Good luck everyone!

ReplyI went on this diet back in April 2006 and I lost 10lbs in 10 days. I had to lose the weight to pass the Army weight standards. If you do not watch what you eat you will definitely gain it RIGHT BACK! I gained it back within 3 months PLUS 20 MORE LBS.. now I am on the diet, started on Monday, and Im waiting for the weight to come off. This time I am gonna change my whole diet and excersize routine altogether. Hopefully I wont gain the weight back. But this is a 10 day diet for the most part. Who cant take 10 days out of each month to maintain a good weight for themselves? I can, so thats my plan.
Replywow, your friend lost 65 pounds in 4 months? Holy crap. I started this diet on September 10, and when I weighed myself on the 17th, I had lost 5 pounds. And I've been cheating a little (had an iced coffee from mcdonalds, skipped on the bacon the last couple of days b/c I only eat Kosher and I have to make a trip to the kosher market) I'm getting a little sick of the eggs, but I can deal with it. I'm also working out everyday, for atleast 30 minutes. I either get on the treadmill, or on the elliptical, and I do crunches and pushups every other day. I'm eating alot of chicken, either grilled or baked, and I've been using PAM cooking spray instread of oil or butter (since it doesnt really have any calories). I want to lose atleast 40 pounds, hopefully 50 by the end of December. I'm going to post my results on here every week. And I really love reading about everyone elses successes and failures. And yes, just like any other "diet" you will gain the weight if you start stuffing your face with pizza, cookies, chips, fried chicken, sodas, etc. Once you've lost the weight with a diet as extreme as this, its important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. And that includes making smart choices (fatty foods just as a treat, not as an everyday thing) and working out. Good luck everyone!
ReplyThe Grapefruit Diet is just about low calories and low carbs. I would reccommand the South Beach Diet. it has an excellent diet plan and you can lose up to 30 pounds. Isn't that amazing!
ReplyI started the grapefruit diet on 10/1/07 and as of today I have lost a total of 12 lbs. I try to walk about a mile 5 days a week. I had a hard start for those 1st two days but now it's much better. I always cure my sweet tooth by chewing plenty of sugar free gum. They also make lots of sugar free mints and I noticed my weight still continues to come off.
ReplyI forgot to add that instead of recomnd butter I use extra virgin olive oil when preparing my vegetables in the pan and cooking my eggs and turkey bacon.
ReplyI have now lost 21 1/2 lbs since August 27. My weight loss stopped for about 3 weeks and I started working out and have started losing again. I'm averaging about 3 lbs a weeks which is cool with me. I have a goal of 140lbs.
ReplyOkay even after my cheat weekend my total weight loss thus far is 13bs. I also walk about a mile at least 3 x's per week. I drink my water as recmnd but 4 some strange reason it always waits til the late evening to wanna come out so I've been missin out on a lotta sleep lately. I 1st found out about this diet by my Aunt who's doctor gave it to her before she had surgery and she lost her weight so I know it's tried and true.
ReplyOf course everyone will lose weight! It's obvious from this diet that your intake of calories drops dramatically, so weight loss is the resulting factor.
It's not due to the grapefruit and it's not a miracle fruit.
Like any "diet", it's not healthy to continue with this long-term. You don't get the balance of protein, carbohydrate and good fats that you need to stay healthy and I'm not surprised to read that some people are developing wrinkly skin!
Why do people insist on trying out these silly fad diets. As soon as you stop this diet, all the weight will pile back on.
ReplyIt's always interesting to me to see people pissing on other peoples parade. So let me put my two cents in. Ok lets sum up an average person's diet, there's some form of fast food in there somewhere. Anyway, the point I am making this diet has fruit, has veggies, has protein. Well it doesn't have fiber, however there is fibe in a McDonalds cheeseburger. So to say that not having fiber in your eatible diet is bad when if taken into concideration that most peoples eating habits aren't giving them fiber. Well, if you are only here to piss about the diet, please go somewhere else. I see a lot of support here. We don't need people like you discouraging others.
ReplyI started this diet May 29 07 and have lost a total of 80 lbs. I was off of it for 2 mths due to surgery and only gained 5 lbs. this works for me

ReplyI started the diet yesterday[2/2/08] and plan to stick it out for 12 days. I have 50 lbs to loose. I don't understand why this diet is no more unhealthy than the Atkins diet, medifast, etc... at least this diet has a healthy fruit and vegetibles.

ReplyI have been on the grapefruit "Mayo Clinic diet now for 11 days- I have lost 9 lbs. so far. I have not cheated or strayed from the rules one time. I started at 197.5 and 11 days later am now 188.5. I am 5'9. I want to get down to 145. I haven't experienced the 2 days off and re-starting so I will keep you all posted. I am guessing I will have to be good for two days or I will gain it back.

ReplyOk Im back with results... After day 12 I lost a total of 10.5 pounds. I did not cheat once during that 12 days. On my two days off I ate chicken fingers, steak and potatos and had some wine. I gained 3 back. I will let you know how fast that comes off. I will keep you all posted after the next round of 12 days.
Replyhi i was wondering if someone could recommend some of the exercises that they did while on this diet. i plan on starting this on march 1 and my goal is to lose 80 lbs! i cant wait to start. my mother did this diet after she had me and she said her meals consited of 1/2 a grapefruit and water only. she didnt include the other stuff. i cant wait to start! wish me luck!

my 17 year old son did this in aug and lost 25 lbs in one mnth and so far has kept it off ....
so i thoght I`d give it a try I need to loose between 25-30 lbs due to high blood presure..

i started my grapefruit diet 5 days ago, i am not going to weigh myself. instead i am going to go by my pant size. i am in a size 10 right now and i want to get down to a size 6. i figure if i drop to a size 6 then i will lose about 25-30 pounds. i have to walk at least 2 miles a day to get to and from work also i have a dog that has to have his walks. i also work out to carmen electra strip tease work outs. it sounds bad but she will make you dance off the pounds...plus it is fun for someone my age.
Replymy future mother inlaw was on this diet before and she has lost 45 lbs. now a few more years later she wants to lose more. she has given me the will power to stop eatting bad food and see what good food i have missed out on. in return i am giving her the will power to stay on the diet because i believe in her. in her first 12 days she has lost 12 pounds. her back was hurting her and now she has no pain.
i want to lose weight because all of my life i have been a bigger girl. i am in college and i want to look good. i will be getting married in a few years so i want to be able to fit into the perfect dress.

Hello everyone! My fiance and I are going to be starting this diet on monday. We are getting married in July and both really want to lose weight. We are both around 240 at the moment. I was scared when i read the article above, but I was reading everyones reviews of the diet and felt better. I will keep everyone posted on our results! As for the people who are saying its not a good diet, you will gain back weight after ANY diet if you don't eat the right way. That's how I got to this weight after being on a good plan from my NUTRITIONIST! Soooooo. we'll see :)
Replymy mom went on this diet and lost a lot of weight. im going to start it too. my mom didnt exercise or anything. all she drank was grapefruit juice ALL the time, and ate bacon and eggs at EVERY meal for weeks and she lost crazy weight! mind you this is a bigger lady. definitly try it!!
ReplyHey! I noticed that it says "make sure you eat until your absolutely full." So does that mean for EVERY meal? It seems kinda strange eating as much bacon and eggs till I am full cause I know the 2 eggs and 2 pieces of bacon were no where near enough filling me up.

ReplyI am so glad I have found this website! I have found most of the articles on the web very discouraging. Despite those articles I decided to give the diet a go as I am desperate to lose some weight. I've been on the diet since the 6th of April and feel fantastic.My clothes are already fitting better, I am full of energy and I have no problems following this diet. I have done Atkins before, with great results so cutting out all carbs is no problem for me and I always drink around 2 litres of water per day. So basically the only change I really made to my diet was adding grapefruit and cutting out snacks! Plus I have upped my excercise and do at least 30 minutes of Tae Bo each night. So hopefully this'll get me where I want to be! Good luck to everyone!
ReplyI've actually been on this diet for about four days now and I have lost about five pounds already I wanna believe that its my fat flushing out but in a way I just really think its all waterweight and once I stop the diet all the weight will come back. Although I don't crave for sweets or ever get hungry anymore I can't wait to see results if there even is ! Doesn't hurt to try right?

ReplyI started this diet on the 21st, and so far, 6 days later, I'm down 7 lbs. I was a HUGE soda and sweets fan, but I haven't had any cravings for my sugary f(r)iends, instead, I had some cravings for bread early on. The grapefruit must kill the sweet-tooth! LOL
Had one little cheat-spell when the restaurant added croutons to my salad (it would be rude not to eat them!), but that's it.
I have quite a bit of weight to lose...started out at 252.5lbs. Not expecting a miracle diet but something that'll help me see what life's like under the 200 mark....and go from there!

Replyokay well hello everyone. i too am glad to have fouind this website. i started this diet barley today. im 15 yrs old, and yes i've heard all the "you're too young to be getting on diets". well i run at least 1-2 miles everyday. im extremely athletic and play volleyball, which will be starting sometime in august, and i need to lose some weight. does this diet really work? i did something similar to this last summer it consisted of only eating tuna and oranges, only. so if you have any advice please email me back. thanks.
ReplyHi, my name is Pebbles. I did this diet several years ago and lost about 40lbs. w/ exercise. It took about 4 1/2 months with alittle cheating for special events. I have since gained the weight back due to poor eating choices. I currently weight 271. In January, I weighed 293. I was doing an every other day diet I found in a magazine. It works pretty well, but this diet has faster results. I will post my results when I start. I need to lose 73lbs before Dec. This is not a bad diet b/c ,you are eating protein, vegetables and fruit.

NO,I do NOT recommend Ocean Spray fot this diet.I looked at the ingredients,and it is only 22% grapefruit juice.Hmm,wonder what the 78% is?Corn syrup? Eww.I recommend TexSun if you can get it.It is 100% juice.Wacth for some of the carton that say unsweetended-even some of those are misleading.
Today is day 3 of my "diet"-I am a carb addict,and for me this diet has been a breeze.No cravings,and I decide when I am full...LOVE it! Good luck.
ReplyI tried having 2 grapefruits a day for a week and ate my regular food without salt and lost 9 pounds in six days.. then after that went back to having very little salt with my food and contained my weight for about 5 months now.
