The Real Grapefruit Diet
The so-called grapefruit diet is one of those mythic fad diets that seem to come and go every few years. It is a terrible diet - very low in calories, nutrient deficient, and cannot be sustained beyond a matter of days. You might lose some water, some muscle, and a bit of fat - then gain it all back again.
In 2004 the Scripps Clinic made a press release claiming that the humble grapefruit does assist in fat loss. However the study seemed isolated, and it was unclear just how much support came from the Florida citrus industry body.
A further study has been undertaken, and has found that red grapefruit "significantly decreased blood levels of triglycerides." The grapefruit was consumed by patients who "had undergone coronary bypass surgery and had found that Zocor, or simvastatin, was ineffective." (to be published in this journal)
...the study's lead author, said that eating red grapefruit would "most probably" help anyone with high cholesterol, not just heart patients. The star ruby grapefruit has a yellow peel with a red blush and an intensely red pulp. It is very sweet, and has few or no seeds. So what does this prove? That the grapefruit, like many other fruits and vegetables has excellent healthful properties.
There will, however, never be a quick-fix diet based on a single food. That's a fantasy.
I think you have to be careful though, because grapefruit juice and some medications don't mix.
ReplyWhat about a diet based around fiber?
ReplyThere is a new one coming out by Steven Schnur MD, "The Reality Diet" or is fiber not a single food?
Interesting how red grapefruits get more respect than their white counterparts. I wonder, if red tastes better and has better health benefits, why the heck would anyone eat a white grapefruit?
ReplyGreg: fiber is not "a" food. Whole fruits and vegetables and whole grains (oatmeal, bulgur, barley, brown rice, etc) are excellent sources of fiber. Processed foods such as candy and energy bars are not great sources of fiber. For good health, it is recommended you get 20 to 25 g of fiber a day.
ReplyI don't think I made myself clear. I meant fiber being one food or food group -- is that still looking to one source as the clue to weight loss.
ReplyI am having a difficult time explaining today!
I guess I\'m still not getting you, Greg. Fiber is important from a dieting perspective, because foods high in fiber tend to be both bulky yet low in calories. So high-fiber foods tend to help you feel fuller. But it\'s just one component in a healthy diet.
ReplyLet me try this. Take a look at the book I mentioned above on Amazon.com read the description.
ReplyDo you think this wouldbe a valid way of eating?
Dietary fiber is an essential part of any healthy diet. The ADA recommends about 25-30g per day. A number of weight loss books have been based around dietary fiber (such as the F2 plan). The Weight Watchers points system also includes fiber as a factor.
However healthy fat loss is always about a combination of approaches rather than just focusing on a single food group (the "grapefruit" diet being a case in point).
Greg - a brief look at the blurb about the Reality Diet - it looks remarkably similar to the F2 Plan by Audrey Eyton.
ReplyJim- what diet books/ways of eating do you recommend?
ReplyBy the way, not to be offensive but what is your background? Are you a nutritionist/Dr./Average Joe?
Thanks!
To agree with "not so much," eating grapefruit or taking things with grapefruit extract can interfere w/ the absorption of some meds. These include blood pressure drugs and sedatives.
ReplyI'm absolutely an average joe. See the About and Disclaimer pages (on the right sidebar). That will help to explain my POV.
I make it clear that this is a blog - it's full of opinions - which you can take or leave! Hopefully you will find some useful stuff.
ReplyMy mother tried the Grapefruit diet a few years ago, and it made her sick because she wasn't getting enough nutriants. If one would like a diet to jump start their weight-loss program, I recommend the Cabbage Soup Diet. I have done this diet a few times, and each time I did it I lose the maximum weight. In fact after doing the Cabbage Soup Diet, and losing weight, I got pregnant with my son. The good thing with the Cabbage Soup Diet is that it incorporates all of the food groups, so you don't suffer from malnutrition.
ReplyHello...I have an question.Exactly what is the Grapefruit diet? Cabbage Soup? If you could, please e-mail me the details. At siskia89@yahoo.com I am going to be a senior this upcoming fall and I want to be healthy and in good shape for my senior pictures!

ReplyThe best thing that I have found for a diet is the Mangosteen Fruit and exercise.
You may not have heard of the mangosteen fruit. However, it has been used for centuries in Cambodia and South East Asia in folk medicine. Also, much mangosteen research has been carried out in laboratories and universities around the world over the last 30 years. Alternative health practitioners have used the mangosteen fruit to treat a wide spectrum of health ailments and conditions with great success, which has produced a wide spectrum of testimonials. The research that they have completed has increased what we know about the real world benefits the mangosteen provides to the human body.
The amazing testimonies from many people that were helped by this "Queen of Fruit", piqued the interest of scientists and health professionals. These testimonials compelled scientists and doctors to investigate whether these health experiences were merely anecdotal or if in fact there was real scientific proof to support them. Due to the mangosteen research that has been completed, what folk doctors and personal testimonials have shown for centuries is now being recognized, for its validity, throughout world by scientists and medical professionals alike. The mangosteen fruit is truly amazing, and has tremendous, all natural, medicinal advantages. If you want more inform let me know....
Reply>>>>>>>>>the grapefruit diet does work, no it is not the healthiest way to lose, but i assure you that it is better than most products out on the market or starving yourself, i lost 17 pounds in about 1 1/2 months with excercise and plenty of water, i did this to join the military because you had to be a standard weight to get in, i do not recommend it as long term, but it is not as hazardous to your health as most methods people use. it did however give me more energy and doesnt leave you hungry after meals, seriously, try it before you knock it.
Replyoh..... i forgot to mention that i lost this weight in september of 2005, and have since kept it off eating well balanced, and will probably get back on it before summer to get into my 2 piece !
ReplyMy two cents: I did this diet in 2002 and lost 20 lbs. in 1 month! I started on it yesterday and will be posting my results shortly. I am taking vitamins, drinking plenty of water, and I'm exercising. I have 4 months to lose 50 lbs.
Replydoes anyone have the grapefruit diet? I would like to know what it is? I remember back in the 70's there was a diet that consisted of grapefruit, eggs and spinach, if anyones knows that one please let me know. jmelder52@aol.com
ReplyGrapefruit diet menu I was told:
Breakfast:
1/2 GF
2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon
Lunch:
1/2 GF
Meat and Salad
Dinner:
1/2 GF
Meat and Veggies/Salads
Bedtime snack:
glass of milk or tomato juice
Take this for 12 days (and you should lose max 10 lbs), then go back to normal diet for at least 2 days before restart, if you so choose.
Replyyea i think everyone here should not talk about a diet you know nothing about because obviously none ofyou have ever tried this diet before. maybe it does work....
ReplyWhat is the grapefruit diet? What can you have and what can't you? Could you please e-mail me the details at truely_yours22@hotmail.com . Thanks
Replyi want to know if drinking the grapefruit juice (concentrate) that u buy in the grocery and eating the grapefruit itself, would u get the same results?
ReplyI've been on the grapefruit diet for a week, and I have already noticed results. My clothes, which were getting too tight, already fit better and my tummy already looks much flatter. I am going to weigh myself at the end of the 12 days I've committed to this program. I only want to lose about 10 pounds, so I don't think I will be on the diet for much time beyond that.
I have to admit, I have a sweet tooth. So, this diet was TOUGH the first two days, but by day three it wasn't so bad. In fact, I have discovered that switching things up like eating chicken breast one day, tuna the next, a burger "protein style" or even sashimi (sushi without the rice) really keeps it interesting. Basically, just remember no rice, no noodles, no bread, no potatoes!
For those of you who are interested in which program I'm doing, here it is:
Breakfast:
Coffee
1 8oz glass of UNSWEETENED 100% grapefruit juice (if you prefer, you can have 1/2 an unsweetened grapefruit)
2 slices turkey bacon
2 eggs any style (hardboiled or scrambled using real butter)
Lunch:
1 8oz glass of grapefruit juice
Large Salad
Meat / protein any style (I favor baked chicken breast, fish, etc.)
--Be sure to eat enough salad and lean meat until you are full
Dinner:
1 oz glass of grapefruit juice
Lots of veggies (use carrots sparingly, no potatoes). I try to eat the veggies with the most nutrients -- spinach, broccoli, etc.
Meat / protein any style
Before bed:
8 oz. of skim milk or soy
Remember to drink a lot of water and take your vitamins!
I will not lie to you. The first two days were HARD! I craved sweets and bread so much! I also felt tired and headachy. But, starting with the third day, I have ENERGY! I don't feel hungry.
What helped me during the first days of the diet was to keep my goals in mind. I knew that experiencing the cravings meant that my body was running out of that "junk fuel" and I was going through the hardest part of it.
Also, be sure to incorporate walking and some mild to moderate exercise just so your body starts revving up for the time when you get off of the diet. I've been walking and following some yoga dvds, and everything is firm and I am not exhausted like I think I would be if I tried something too strenuous like running.
This is also a good time to read articles from dieticians and others so that you can learn good tips that will help you keep your weight off.
I don't think this would be a good diet for long term, all day every day because you don't get enough fiber. However, I think a healthy person with 10-20 pounds could do it for a month or so. It's more like a "jump start" to weight loss.
If you can discipline yourself to stick to this program for 12-30 days, then you have already demonstrated that you have control over your body and can make a more balanced approach to weight loss work for you.
ReplyUpdate -- I finished the Grapefruit Diet Friday. After 12 days, I lost 8 pounds. The diet says 10 pounds in 10 days, but I only weighed 125lbs to start, so it makes sense that I didn't lose all 10. My fiance, however, is 6'2", and he went from 210 to 198 in 12 days. I now fit into all of my skirts and jeans which had gotten too snug.
We are now practicing more portion control than we did before the diet, and we're eating a normal, but healthier, diet.
ReplyThe grapefruit diet really works if you stick to it. I did about 3 years ago and lost 80 lbs. in 7 months. It was really hard at first but once you got used to the lifestyle it wasn't hard. Even the 2 days I was off of it I did not crave sweets.
ReplyIs it good to drink grapefruit juice instead of water?Because i drink grapefruit juice by every meal like 2, 3 times a day.Plus i eat allot of vegetables(brocoli, colyflower, carrots) plus fruits (appel,watermelon,melon)...im on this dieet like 15 days, do you think i can lose weight like this ??Plsss give me ur advice how to lose fat, by doing dieet and situps and no work out ??let me know at arubianscarnaval@hotmail.com...THANKSS
ReplyI just started the grapefruit diet two days ago and I am glad that I found this website! I was having doubts after reading research on other websites that basically said that this diet was a waste of time. It is so encouraging to find people who are or who have tried this diet. I haven't been a big eater since my pregnancy (my daughter is now 6 months old) but I still haven't lost any weight. I would really like to lose the remainder of my pregnancy weight (about 20 pounds) before the summer so this seemed like a good thing to try.
I don't have time to do alot of exercise so for now I'm only doing about 30 min. everyother day of aerobics. Is that enough or should I increase the time I workout? Would someone who has knowledge of this diet please email me and let me know exactly what you did as far as exercise? As for everyone else I wiill continue on with this diet for the remainder of the time and hopefully after the 12 days I will have positive feed back regarding this diet.
ReplyYes. 30 mins every other of aerobic exercise is good. Because you've decreased your caloric intake a great deal and adding exercise will just burn off more calories...in short, you'll lose weight. Good luck.
Replyhi everyone, I have started the diet today, I have desperately tied to lose like 5-6 kgs for the past 2 years but in vain, it was because of no proper motivation. But now I reaaly want o get back in shape an i hope 12 days from now, i will feel a lotbetter and be able to get rid of the 5kg....i will let you know how it goes. I did the diet once 2 years ao and it worked but i could not do it or 12 whole days.
ReplyHi there again...as promised, here i am with an update of how my diet is going. Its going great, i am satisfied, today was the fifth day and i already lost like 2.5pounds. I really have the intention to continue for 7 more days. will you guys updated. See ya
Replygiselle, please could you tell me if the grapefruit diet you did was exactly th same as Lisa described it in her posting a couple of messages after yours? Many thanks, I wish to start this diet in 3 days! I will also post the results.
ReplyI have started the Grapefruit diet yesterday on July 22. I weight 209lbs. My goal is to reach 180lbs by the end of August. So I will keep you guys posted. Reading your posts has really motivated me!!! Thanks
ReplyI am going to begin the grapefruit diet on tommorrow 8/1/07. I have read some testimonials with excellent results. One was a guy who did it for six months straight and he lost 150lbs. That really motivated me. I also read that someone did it and looked really dried out and pruned. That is what I am scared of. I am going to give it a long shot. I am going to keep myself hydrated with plenty of Crystal Light because I cant stand plain water. Everyones body reacts different so im going to see what mine does. I plan to exercise every other day. I want to continue with a long term goal of the end of December. I have to take it one day at a time and not think about my long term goal. I currently weight 285lbs. Wish me luck and good luck to everyone else trying to lose. If you have any tips let me know. Anything can help.
ReplyThe grapefruit diet does work. I know from experience, but if when you stop tne diet you do not start a modified diebetic diet or very carefully watch what you eat you WILL put the weight back on plus some. It due to built in survival instincts. Once you've lost your weight talk to a dr or dieticien to find out how to keep it off.
ReplyWell, I am starting this Grapefruit diet tomorrow 8-2-07. I will come back and post my results soon. I need to loose at least 80 lbs.
ReplyI started the grapefruit diet on July 18th. I'm on my second round ( 12 days on 2 dyas off ) and I have lost 9 pounds. I kinda cheated and drank a few beers so I'm sure I could have lost a little more had I not done that. I think it is a great diet. I don't get hungry at all and I drink tons of water.
ReplyI'm down 14.5 pounds now. This diet is pretty easy. I think on your 2 days off you really need to watch what you eat:)
ReplyHello there everyone,
Uh, are you all from England? I hope that doesn't sound rude. I live in America. I suppose I'm asking because I have no idea how to convert kgms? At any rate, I've heard of the grapefruit diet and I think I already am on this diet. In fact it is a part of my life. I love grapefruit so much I eat one every single day! I've noticed some changes but I haven't really given up the sweets all together (that is a real tough one for me) but everything else I already do. For breakfast I have 3 or 4 eggwhites and (okay, you can slay me if you'd like) a 1/2 of green olives (from the organic food store) and 1 big blonde grapefruit and a tiny piece of dark chocolate. (I gave up the Mocha cappucinos though...yay!)
For lunch, uusally some beans (I know, it's pretty gross) but I usually force myself to eat them. And then for dinner a piece of fish with veggies and then another bite of dark choclate (to be fair it is usually an oz or two) and of course I love tea so I drink that in the morning (usually white tea). I will try to give up the sweets too and see how it goes then I'll get back to you all. I hope everyone is having a blessed day!
Love ya!

Hi,
I am starting the diet today. I started last week, but had to stop on day 5 b/c of a boat trip where bacon was not available. I didn't weigh myself, though. I did find that my cravings were gone after the third day. The second day I was ready to get off it, but I ended up being able to do it. I was not hungry, but the only problem I had was that the grapefruit made my teeth hurt, so I am switching to grapefruit juice through a straw. I do have a question: it says you can have any dressing, and it doesn't have to be diet. Doesn't that ruin the diet if it has sugar or carbs, like thousand island dressing? I am eating salads w/ the dressing but feel like that is hurting the weight loss. Can anyone comment on this?
I am 144 pounds, I'd like to get back to my weight of 123 pounds. I will post results in about 2 to 3 weeks.

ReplyI am starting the grapefruit diet in a couple of days. The reason being I have personally saw results from a co-worker. He lost 39 lbs. in four months... and he cheated a couple of times (using cheese on his brocoli). I weigh 1811/2 lbs. I want to loose 30lbs by Christmas. I have also signed up for gym and palates. Will keep you posted,

Replylike all other diets, won't you gain all the weight back as soon as you go off this diet?
