Fried Food and Chocolate: Staple Diet?

The Scottish Daily Record has a "success story" about a 26 year old man who lost 70 pounds simply by changing diet (and what a diet it was!). The article seems to be a thinly veiled advertisement for Weight Watchers - but is inspiring all the same. In a strange irony - the "business insider" sidebar reports that chocolate-maker Cadbury have had their best sales performance in a decade.

At 277 pounds, Gavin reported feeling chest pains and being out of breath. This implies that poor cardiovascular fitness was the culprit. 277 pounds isn't so wild as one might think - Gavin is 6' 2" tall. Once again, it is health condition that is the issue here. Take a look at his diet:

Breakfast: Fried breakfast
Lunch: Toast with cheese
Dinner: Burger and chips or pizza
Snacks: Crisps and chocolate bars
I suspect that such a diet is quite normal among many. His weight loss diet is this:
Breakfast: Toast or cereal
Mid-morning snack: Apple
Lunch: Soup with bread
Afternoon Snack: Apple or banana
Dinner: Chops with boiled potatoes and veg
In other words, he ate less, and started eating more fruit and vegetables. Nothing complicated. I've noticed that people who have very poor diets see good results from relatively small changes to diet - such as simply dropping soda, chips, or sugary snacks.

It is this simplicity that so often gets lost. People rarely, if ever, would think that his original diet was healthy and his new diet is outstanding in comparison.

Sometimes the best approach is to follow common sense - refined foods, junk foods and sugars are less healthy than fresh fruit, veg and salads.

Throw in some simple, aerobic exercise and you are away!

And a nice juicy steak or some lamb chops!!

The diet sound like an extreme to me. It's ok to have a little sugar or fat on a diet...just as long as they're not the mainstays. If you totally deprive yourself it seems like you would crave that stuff.

Claire I agree. Unless his portions are quite big, that isn't a lot of food other than at dinner, where he's having his largest meal. I'd be starved by dinner.
