We Are Lazy

This picture caught my eye (over at the hilarious Stumptuous website). I had to rub my eyes. Escalators going up to a gym? What in the world is going on?

Our bodies are made for moving. If they don't move - they slowly seize - just like a bicycle left out in the rain.

The accompanying article makes some interesting thoughts about weight training and fitness.

In an emergency, especially a long-term one, health and strength are more important that any equipment or supplies. The whole experience made me rethink some of my own training priorities: strength endurance proved much more useful than raw strength, and having a lot of muscle mass was almost a liability. Pavel suddenly seems a bit less insane to me now.
With our sedentary day-jobs and nightly pursuit of the perfect physique - we tend to forget that our bodies are allowed to be useful - not just objects of vanity.

We're all quite lazy. Our property and yard sizes are shrinking. We have more labor-saving devices than our ancestors would have dreamed of.

Forget the elevator or the escalator. Take the stairs.

Eh... not so much

You know, when Hubby and I go on a cruise, we try to take the stairs and skip the elevators as much as possible. We still gain weight, but not nearly as bad as it could be, and I think stairs help. When your cabin is on the 9th deck, and you have to go down to the 5th deck for meals, 4 flights of stairs times several climbs a day... it makes a difference!

Hey, they could have older clients too who need the stairs to minimize inpack on their knees and hips. Or maybe as u mentioned they could have guys who weigh 300 or more who are all muscle and can't freaking climb them. Still I think it would be fine cause some people in the mid range age wise really need this stuff and when in the gym use low impact equipment for a reason. By the way, where the heck is the easy access enrty for those who are disabled?

After a particularly vigorous workout, I could see myself in need of an escalator to get out of the gym....

Come on, escalators to get into a gym?? The only reason I could see that being reasonable is if the place has PT facilities and they have people with torn up knees or broken ankles coming in to do rehab. Other than that, people should get off their buns and move a little bit. It never hurts to take stairs whenever possible.

I agree with Spectra but still stand by my previous comments, cause of circumstances.

lol

My initial thoughts were, maybe they are a stipulation under disability laws or something - but then I read 'joker here's' post "By the way, where the heck is the easy access enrty for those who are disabled?"...and it struck me of course that they would have to be ramps for wheelchairs, not moving stairs!

By the way - great post title! Out of all of the blogs in my feed reader this one got my first click without any hesitation!

'Forget the elevator or the escalator. Take the stairs.' Amen to that!

I know exactly where this 24 hr gym is - it is in an area of San Diego Called Point Loma. Sorry to tell you these people, but the San Diegans at that gym are very fit and trim. San Diego is a fit town. I think that 24 hour had no choice but to be built there as that was the design of the mall.

That it funny. I have visited many gyms but have never seen anything like this. Could you tell me where this gym is?
