BodyGem: Accurate Metabolic Rate
Determining your resting metabolic rate (RMR) by using a calculator is flawed. Even the best formulas are really only a best guess (see more here). Healthetech have an intriguing device called the BodyGem that determines RMR by measuring oxygen consumed while at rest.
This seems to be one of the few ways to accurately measure daily maintenance calories. The device itself weighs just 5 ounces, and can be synced with software (The BodyGem Analyzer) via a cable.
Of course, at a price of $799 it's more suitable for doctors and fitness trainers than for an individual.

Just a comment about why we get fat. I agree with the reasons Blogger Jim said but I thought he should also add gaining weight because of thyroid problems which is causing me to have gastric bypass, maybe. Thanks Jim, you are right on top of Xenical!
ReplyJudith, I hear you - I gained over 100lb with untreated hypothyroidism in 1 year, and I ate around 1 meal 1 small snack during that time, since I barely got out of bed. Not the healthiest foods since my husband had to cook (ww pasta with tomato sauce, soup, or chicken or steak with vegetables and rice, or an omelet and rice), but around 600 calories a day, and gaining weight fast. That would not make a non-hypothyroid bedridden person gain weight at all, and look what it did to me.
There is also genetics, PCOS (I have that too, I am so lucky! Sorry for the sarcasm...), Type II diabetes, and a ton of conditions that require taking esteroids. All can make a person gain weight and have a hard time losing it.
ReplyI agree. If you have a weight problem it is always best to start with a thyroid level. A low thyroid is very common. Half the world is already on synthroid for god sake!

I have 2 body gems so I would be willing to sell one. It is a great tool to have and really motivates you when you can see improvement with life style changes.I have increased my RMR by 300 calories over the last couple years and that was while I was going through menopause.
ReplyYou can not reuse the mouth pieces because the saliva residue would be unsanitary and makes the reading less accurate. Please contact me if your interested. Cindy
Good thing, but expensive.
ReplyOn some Internet shop I saw alternative, the price was hardly more than 500 dollars
