Xenical Over the Counter: Big Mistake?
Xenical (orlistat) may become the first non-prescription weight loss drug. This follows the pattern in other some countries. On the MSNBC site, there is an overwhelming vote of confidence for the drug. Of over 132000 votes 59% say they will try it because "...I can't lose those last 10 pounds." Of course these results are very skewed as the people reading the article are people with an interest in the drug.
Even so, these results are concerning. I strongly believe that a drug such as this must be prescribed by a physician. This move will simply enforce the quick-fix mentality. Xenical is already guilty of a series of aggravating ads in Canada - attempting to associate glamour with the drug.
And then there are the side effects:
When taken with meals, orlistat blocks the absorption of about one-quarter of any fat consumed. That fat — the equivalent of about 150 to 200 calories — is passed out of the body in stools, which can be loose or oily as a result. Other side effects include gas, incontinence and oily spotting. About half of patients in trials experienced such side effects, the company said.
Xenical blocks fat. That's all.
Of course, you could just opt to eat less fat.
UPDATE Jun 2007 : OTC Xenical has been renamed Alli (pronounced all-eye). The pill can now be purchased on-line without a prescription.
HI Cris,
I just got my starter ALLI kit today. I agree with you I have realistic expectations about it and really hope it gives me the extra boost to stick to my already pretty healthy eating lifestyle. :)
Reply
Hi,
I just purchased the starter kit today! I started a weight loss program last month and lost 5 pounds, but stopped walking and gained it all back within weeks. I need something to jump start my diet and I hope this does it.
I tried ADIPAX in the past with ATKINS and liked that it curbs appetite so that you don't think about food. Can the two(ADIPAX and ALLI) be taken at the same time? Anyone know the answer?
ReplyThis new drug is going to have its 15 minutes of fame as the new diet drug for everyday people, only to become the next fad that was forgotten. Blocking a quarter of the fat that your body absorbs is an impressive direct effect for a drug. But this drug is nothing new. Xenical has its flaws because it is our diet that is the problem, not our body. I won't bother with the diet and exercise bit.
All the unused energy or calories in your body is stored as glycogen. Glycogen that is unused is eventually stored as fat.
So even though Alli/Xenical directly blocks fat that you digest, it does not block the carbs that will be stored as glycogen. The sad reality is balancing our amount of calorie intake with our energy output
Having Xenical or its baby brother Alli leaving build-up of oil in your colon leaves you at risk for many problems in the future. Consider how excessive red meat consumption leaves many people with problems down the road. That is with healthy proteins. Excessive fats in your colon leaves to unhealthy buildup. Most of your body's water absorption is in the large intestine, which will also be affected. Lipids like fat are not soluble in water, so a coating of oils in your large intestine can cause great imbalance to your water absorption to the rest of your body. That in turn can lead to a change in your body's blood pressure as well.
If this drug is planned for long term use, there are too many health risks involved with the digestive system. If this is used for a desired goal to reach in weight, an increase in exercise and diet should be sufficient.

ReplyI have been using Alli for 3 days now. Today will be my 4th. I have not experience any side effects. I been watching what I eat and staying within my calorie and fat intake.
I too used to use Xenical. I never experienced a side effect on that either. I think that only happens if you exaggerate on eating greasy or fatty foods.
WOrd of advice:
Eat a low fat diet. This is not a miracle pill. It is simply an aid.
ReplyI have struggled with my weight now for about ten years. Since I have had my last child. I have a very low metabolism and can't seem to loose the weight even eating low fat and with exercise. I order xenical and we will see if it makes a difference. I am 5'5 and weight 280. Wish me luck and as soon as I start loosing the weight I will jump back on here and let everyone know.....Good luck to the rest of you.
ReplyBy boyfriend is about 70-80 pounds overweight. He is already having health problems due to his excessive weight. I am glad there is something like Alli that will help him get on the right track to loose weight. He sits all day at work sometimes 10 hrs plus. By the time he gets home he is extremely tired and hungry. Alli will teach him to eat more apropriately and get the incentive to start walking after meals. He just started this program I'll let you know of his progress.
ReplyBy the way I kinda see Abdullah's point of view. I guess there must be something out there to clean your vowels with to avoid further damage to the rest of your body, right?
A relative of mine has been on xenical for approximately 3 months and lost quite a bit of weight - 35 pounds. Sounds great? Well, maybe not. She recently had a liver function test and her results were alarmingly high, requiring an ultrasound. She is nervously waiting the results. Her physician said she might have NASH (non-alcoholic liver disease) which can lead to cirrhosis of the liver. Because of her successful weight loss, I had asked my doctor on two different occasions about it, and he refused to put me on it. Thank God.
ReplyI'm going to try Alli. I need to lose 65 pounds and I am hopeful that this product will HELP me do that. After reading this blog it is clear to me that this pill is only an AID to weight loss. I'm going to have to do the work (low-fat diet, exercise) if I expect results. For me, losing the weight quickly inspires me to keep at it. And, I'll pay the price for pigging out on fatty food. Good Luck to all.
Replyhi,
I started taking "alli" last week it takes about three days for it to get into your system. The first two days were fine, well come saturday everytime i went to the bathroom there were Orange oily spots. Sorry to be so descriptive. I do not eat fatty foods i am also doing weight watchers. when you do the combination i think you have more of a chance of it staying off.
FYI- Costco/BJ'S has it really cheap.
ReplyI recently started taking alli and I really like it. The side effects are not as bad as some said they would be. I'm sooooo glad to have something that works. After just one week I've lost 2 pounds which is incredible. I'm very happy with the product I just wish it was cheaper.
ReplyI bought alli last week. It took about 3 days, as mentioned before, for the "treatment effects" to show up. And I certainly don't trust myself to break wind, even when alone, because I don't trust that only "wind" will be passed! LOL!
But I will try that metamucil trick to minimize these "treatment effects".
It makes me wonder if 120mg is needed when I am seeing something at 60?
I would say that my dietary habits, other than alcohol, are like most normal thin people....my daily diet isn't high in fat, but it is high in fiber and low in simple sugars. But, I'd say there is usually a day in there, usually Friday, when I get on a fried food high. Usually it's dinner with the girls... So I am hoping that alli will minimize the damage of these weekly therapy sessions ;)
I never had a problem with my weight until my thyroid went bad at age 24. Before that I easily kept my weight at about 130lbs. After that I've really battled, and lost, and now weigh a little north of 2 bills. I'm 5'5". I exercise about 3 times a week and I am an avid gardener, so I am active.
But I've been unsuccessful with weight loss. The only time I was able to lose weight was the year I lost my job. The stress and anxiety made me sick to my stomach and I probably ate only twice a week. For real. Over the course of 5 months I lost 30lbs.
But when I got a new job and the stress went away...I started eating like a normal person....and all the weight came back in about 3 months, plus an extra 10 because my metabolism was shot.
Starving yourself, as a plan or as a reaction to major stress, is not good for you....and not sustainable!
So, I hope that alli can help deprive my body of a few extra calories so that I can at least stop GAINING weight when I smell food... ;)
Good luck to everyone!

ReplyMy wife and I started talking it last Wednesday. Its working and we are already losing more weight slowly. Side effecs aren't as bad as we thought. it makes us more aware of how many grams of fat we are taking in each meal. We are also walking every day and so far we like it.
Hey,
ReplyI just have a quick question, I have had my gallbladder removed, can I still take Xenical?
Thanks,
JoAnne
Hi. I have been on Xenical about4 days now...not too many problems here. Although, I am 5'8 and 170 lbs...I always thought this drug was for "obese" people. I absolutely mean no disrespect with that term I hate that term actually. My doctor gave it to me recently. I had my 5th child in 2005 and just couldn't lose the weight. I weigh the same now as I did 8 months pregnant for an 8 and a half pound baby! So I am hoping this works. All though my mom who is a nurse is concerned. She thinks someone like me doesn't need it. Any thoughts?
ReplyHiya,
ReplyI am on Xenical 120 mg and just started it around 4 days ago and nothing has happened yet. I expected big major Poos but was constipated this morning and feel kinda bloated right now. Am I doing something wrong?? I expected all the fat to just come out! Please let me know if I should follow a specific diet or something? I live in the UK as well, but got the pills of a friend for free without going to
a doctor or anything.
Please let me know
thanks :)
hey... i live in the uk too
How much fat do u eat per meal on average ?
Carrie
ReplyOk no offence intended but... why is anyone EVER taking pills that are not prescribed for them? That is dangerous and not very smart. I understand the desperation of trying to lose some weight and you can't but, that is really not a good idea for any kind of drug.
Go to a doctor and see if you have any allergies, or conditions before taking anymore. All drugs have potential side effects. If you have not been alerted to these you may not know what to look for in event of a reaction. If they aren't yours don't take them.
ReplyI recently started the Alli diet pill. I was going good and then I hate some high fat pork. The next morning I had bright orange and red oil in the toilet. I couldn't tell if this was normal or was I bleeding?
ReplyThis is normal expulsion of the fat. That is how it looks. If you have any pain or anything like that contact your doctor. However, the orange oil etc is totally normal. Stay away from the pork! LOL
ReplyI am in florida and Alli just came out. I have hypothyroid problems. Does anyone know if this will be a problem? I am also on anxiety and depression meds....being fat is a wonderful thing. You are depressed and then the docs give you more meds to help depression and you gain weight..what a life>>
ReplyONe more thing...what about this gall bladder issue? Why is this a problem? I have gall stones somewhere down there in my tummy...but stay away from foods that irritate it...
ReplyJan, I am not sure myself what the connection with the gallbladder is. I know others here must know. I am really sorry for your issue with your other meds. It must seem like a real Catch-22. You want to lose weight but, your other meds make you gain.
Have you consulted your doctor regarding the hypothyroidism? See, I have no clue how it would affect that. I know that rather than work on the brain like other drugs, it works on the GI system ...hence the charming side effects.
Still, you wouldn't want to chance any drug interaction. I will try to find out what I can for you from reputable sources if that will help?
ReplyLD, Update 7-12-07.. 3rd week and I'm losing weight and inches around the mid section! Taking 3 times a day..
ReplyThe only way i have found xenical to be affective is to eat alot of fat with it, everything comes right out so of course you are going to lose weight, its like taking a laxative.
ReplyI have been on xenical 3 weeks and lost nothing! I dont eat much fat and I hardly ever get the orange oily stuff.
Has been a waste of money so far
Replyso if you dont eat a lot of fatty foods you wont get the side effects? and does everyone get the side effects? what do you do when you're at work??
ReplyI had to stop taking it because of the *cough* anal leakage. What happened was one night I went to a party that was outdoors - very hot out etc. I wore a panty liner and everything like I always do on the stuff. Anyway between the drinking and sweating and horse play etc (pad shifts around when you move around) The oily discharge aparently spread to places that it shouldn't and I ended up with a pretty severe urinary tract infection. It's not a pretty story but it IS a real concern for women if you are unable for any reason to change your panty liner often!
ReplyI have lost 15 pounds with Alli. However it is more my diet than the pill. That is the purpose of the pill- to be used in conjunction with a LOW FAT, reduced calorie diet. . would have only lost 10 without its assistance. It just helps remove any excess calories that MAY be present due to any fat in my diet.
The ANAL LEAKAGE? Thats nasty. You dont even want to consider eating fat with a consequence like that. You should not be having oily discahrge and if you are you are not taking the pill the way it was meant to be taken. It is no magic pill. You canot eat fat & sugar and expect the pill to do its magic.
It works. I am proof of it. Bit in truth, I would have lost the weight anyway bc of my eating habits and going to the gym. It just maded the results a little faster.
ReplyI took this medication when my Dr. prescribed it. I chose not to continue it because of the leaky side effects, and most of all "sharting". I definitely liked the days of phen-fen instead. I felt it was the best thing I ever took, although not right for anyone with preexisting conditions with heart or bp. As for me, it was the absolute best. I absolutely love to exercise, but I also love food and constantly feel hunger.
ReplyIt's good to read all ur comments and personal experiences bout xenical.. Im getting really depressed but my weight problem, it's increasing non-stop!
Thanx guyzzz...
Replylost 2 stone with xencal in 2 months.... i also go to the gym 5 days a weeks...It definetely helps with exercise.. Good luck to all the dieters
ReplyI've been taking this drug or also known as orlistat i have taken it for about 5 days now, about two a day with my meals containing fat.. as it directed on the bottle. and the results have become quite concering considering the circumstaces.. it blocks the fat by sending it out a diffrent way and oily spolts have occured.. this concerns me and ive decided to lose weight the healthy way! They should inform us of the side effects.. because ive decided to stop taking it now!
ReplyI have been taking xenical for a week now, but I can't go to the toilet, as anyone else had this problem while taking this drug.
Replyi have lost 14lbs in 3 weeks and am on the drug i have not had any side affects i have changed my whole diet .i used the drug before and had oily side affects which is not nice but this time on the right diet its working for me and this time am not cheating.
ReplyI my self have just started taking Xenical and would like to hear from anyone who has been taking the drug and has had any results....or indeed if u have had problems with the drug i would also like to know.
Could you please e-mail me charlene47@hotmail.co.uk.
Thanks x
ReplyI'm far more worried about the effect this is going to have on me - namely, that I am going to be forced to breathe the air polluted by some fat schmuck who has been shitting himself a little bit every single time s/he/it farts.
This is an environmental disaster of unprecedented proportions when it comes to indoor air quality. Toxic Black Mold will seem like a fond memory if this drug becomes commonplace.
ReplyJust wondering....I am 5'6 and weigh 158lbs, I have been struggling to lose any, I work out (burn 1000cal a day) eat under 1400cal a day and my fat ntake is less then 10 a day. I went to a walk in dr and he gave me one month....but afte reading everything....I am wonderingif it will een get me going.
ReplyUnless you're training for the Olympics or something, it's unlikely you're actually burning 1,000 calories a day through exercise. Don't trust what the readout on the machine tells you. If you're doing tons of cardio (which it sounds like you are), try cutting back a little bit and adding some strength training to build muscle and boost your metabolism. Also examine your diet -- it may not be the amount of food but the type of food you're eating that's holding you back. 10g of fat a day is not enough, and you may be eating way too many carbs.
ReplyHello everyone! I am 5'3 and weigh 145 pounds. 145 pounds may not be very much, but I have a very small body structure so it is definitely too much for me. My doctor informed me that my ideal weight for my body type would be 125 pounds. I started taking Alli (orlistat 60mg) and so far it hasn't seemed to do anything for me. I was wondering if Xenical, being twice the orlistat would work better? I mean, if I took two alli pills instead of one wouldn't it work pretty much the same as Xenical? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
ReplyOk, I am about sick to death of the posts I have read. Most of the advice against Alli is coming from:
1- People that have never taken it, so shut the f%#k up.
2- people that have no weight problems due to the chance happening of good differing genetics, so again, shut the f%&k up.
3- People that are overweight, and take Alli, and go eat three whoppers. They promptly crap themselves to near death and then whine on and on about how terrible it is. Once more, shut the f@%k up.
Read the label. Take stock of what you are eating. Get some activity and you will loose 20 lbs in one month with minimum side effects.
No leakage, no gas, no spotting, just some oil in the toilet.
Actually Alli works in two ways. First it blocks the fat, and if you are not a stupid bastard, it works like Antabuse for fat.
If you take Antabuse and drink, you are going to feel like crap. If you take Alli and eat two double whoppers and a large french fry, well guess what?!?! I does not take a rocket scientist to figure out what is going to happen!
As for any ungodly smell, see the above paragraph.
Alli works WITH a change in habits, not in spite of them.
As for the people in #1 and #2 (above) despite what you think or what, I am on my way to joining the skinny people's club, albeit through the back door so to speak.
Who will you bash on and hate when the "fatties" are gone? Smokers, of course. But those are on the way out with Chantix. You might have to get back to your root and go back to hating African Americans and Asians.
Better get your sheets dusted off and dry cleaned. Your true colors are showing..
ReplyI've always thought that "Antabuse for fat people" was a good analogy for Xenical/Alli. It's definitely something that's designed to make you change your habits. It's not a magic pill that will allow you to have your cake and eat it too (well, I guess you could, but the results would probably be pretty nasty).
Incidentally, I've never tried Alli, but I did manage to lose around 90 lbs and overcome my family history of fat relatives by changing my habits. I don't know if having Alli there to "force" me to not eat cheeseburgers would have helped me or not, but if you use the stuff properly I don't think it's something that's terribly dangerous or anything. You just have to be aware of what you're getting yourself into before you jump in.
ReplyArgh, I am so confused, its 50/50. I just got back from the doctors and he recommended xenical and I was going to try it until I read all of this.. I work at a call centre, I would rather be fat then completely embarrass myself with "oily spotting", I would never lift anything heavy again, my god! Is there ANY way to avoid this!!??
I was deciding to take "duromine", but I've read its "legal speed". I just want to lose weight!
Heelllp
