Death By Junk Food
This is a tabloid special - but apparently 20 year old Briton Scott Martin died from "bad diet and malnutrition."
He was told a transplant could save him but he was too frightened to have the operation and carried on eating his favourite McDonald's French fries, sliced white bread and tinned beans, all high in salt.
Scott had cirrhosis of the liver, and had also contracted auto-immune hepatitis.
"The specialist found he had cirrhosis of the liver. We were baffled because Scott was not a drinker. He did not go to pubs, he was a real home boy. But we found out cirrhosis could be caused by bad diet and malnutrition.Even British nutrition expert Patrick Holford added his opinion saying: "Scott's diet was 'recipe for death'... A processed and refined foods diet can lead to an early grave. Young people are at a vital stage where a good diet is a must."
I don't believe that french fries and white bread will kill you - but - for someone who is already ill, such a diet is disastrous. Too much fat certainly does have an impact on the liver (fatty liver disease).

Fast food as the cause of death – who knows? Did the fast food complicate matters – probably.

ReplyBuy the video, "Super Size It" for a real eye opener. It was a 30 day journey of nothing but fast foods for a journalist. His health almost made him abandon his assignment, he gained 19+ pounds and he made a documentary that will shake you up, whomever you are!
ReplyI've read this on another site earlier this morning. True, it's probably not the ultimate cause of death (I mean, there are many people who eat almost as crappily and don't die of cirrhosis at 20, probably he already had a fragile liver before), but it surely didn't improve anything. Considering the 'nutritional' value of these food choices, I'm not even that surprised.
I'm more surprised by the attitude, though--I guess that between getting a transplant/drinking the nutritional stuff (it was mentioned in another article about this case) and dying, the choice would be ovious... albeit not for everyone, it seems.
ReplyIf all you ate were fries, canned beans, and white bread, I'd pretty much guarantee that your liver enzymes would be pretty out of whack. All those highly processed foods have (besides hardly any vitamins/nutrients) tons of additives that keep them shelf-stable like BHT, propylene glycol (antifreeze!), lots of sodium compounds, nitrates, and other things. Eaten in small quantities, they probably won't do much harm but if that's all you eat for 20 years, the effects may just add up.

ReplyFolks, have we as a nation lost ALL commonsense? It does not require Einsteinian neural networks to figure out that there were other problems here? For thousands of years, many people subsisted on not much more than rice or bread and water and lived well beyond their 20's. Fast food is becoming the whipping boy of the "Take No Personal Responsibility" set now that cigarettes are banned most everywhere. What ever did happen to personal liberty and responsibility. If this kid wanted to eat himself to death by the age of 20, he should have had that right.
