5 Diet Cliches That Never Come True

We read these claims so often, that they become like wallpaper. Do these dieting clichés that adorn our books and web sites really come true?

  • Eat Your Favorite Foods and Still Lose Weight
Great - that means I can still eat 3 BK Triple Whoppers a day!
  • Watch the Pounds Melt Away
    Since when does fat melt?
  • Lose Weight Fast
Rapid weight loss is rare, and often never lasts.
  • Lose Belly Fat First
Tummy fat normally hangs on for dear life. There is no such thing as spot reducing.
  • No More Hunger Pangs
Let's see, if you go from eating 4,000 calories per day to 1,500 per day - I suspect there might be the odd hunger pang until your body adapts.

If your fat did melt away
it might look like this.
Not a pretty picture.

About the belly fat thing, I know you can't target just one area of your body but don't you lose belly fat faster than fat in the thighs or hips? I had read that this is the reason men can lose weight faster than women. Men typically store most of their fat in their belly and have an apple shape to their figure, whereas women store it in their belly, thighs, butt etc. to support a child if they become pregnant.

This seems to be saying that vigorous exercise (such as 20 miles a week of running) reduces visceral fat (behind-the-belly, around-the-organs fat), but a close reading of the article doesn't really reveal if they mean that the belly fat is being more quickly reduced than other fat -- although it seems to imply that.

You lose weight first in the spot where you gained it last. For me, that happened to be my face, chest, and belly. The last place it left was my thighs/hips. So it's different for everybody. And yeah, the only time I've ever seen fat melt was in a pan ;)

When it comes to dieting, "losing" and "fast" never work out for me.

i've lost about 15lbs and gained some muscle with a good diet and consistent 4 days/week at the gym since Sept 05. my problem area is my tummy area. it won't go away! i guess i just have to keep on running harder.

Agreed the fat melting picture was not something to admire. I am starting my new diet again this week. But I am trying something new, eating right and exercise. Imagine that all these years of dieting and I think I will try this. So what do you think, could this be the diet that works for me?? I will need support though and I hope I can count on all of you..

"Eat Your Favorite Foods and Still Lose Weight". This is true. It's the *quantity* of your favourite foods that counts.

These are false???? Damn. I lose bust fat much slower than any other. I think I lose fat in my toes faster than my bosom which I would love to be a lower size. I know, men, you view this differently.

Whitney, the only way to lose it is to lose fat overall. That or having dangerous cosmetic surgery, of course.

Spot Weight loss depends on body type and genes-my problem area is my stomach as well and I have to work extra hard to get rid of the flab there.Found a great way by cutting out all carbs, much as I love fruit I dont touch it if I need to lose the fat.
I suspect thats also because I also cut out all bloating foods.

"Rapid weight loss is rare, and often never lasts."

Nor does it stay off. It also could mean an illness, which is always bad.
