Flavor Point Diet

The Flavor Point Diet is a new book written by Dr David Katz. Dr Katz is associate professor at Yale University School of Public Health. He also is a columnist for Oprah Winfrey's "O" magazine and for eDiets. The Flavor Point diet is based on the premise that by optimizing flavoring in your food - you can achieve satiation or fullness without overeating.

The book contains over 40 daily meal plans, 100 recipes, a shopping guide, and of course, the strategies behind the diet. The author has a set of glowing endorsements from many other diet book contemporaries.

In an article in newspaper The Courante last year, Dr Katz is quoted:

"It starts to become downright unconscionable for adults to keep turning to silly, quick-fix diets for themselves while their kids are developing chronic diseases,"
Whilst I'm not implying that the Flavor Point is a silly, quick-fix diet - it does appear to be a traditional weight loss diet of reduced portion-sizes and calories. Daily calories on the diet appear to be in the 1200-1600 range, and immediate weight loss is realized by dropping refined carbs and other fats out of the diet. The concept of optimized flavoring seems a nice idea, but also somewhat gimmicky.

Flavor is most definitely an issue. We eat foods high in fat and salt - because they (mostly) taste good. There is no reason why you shouldn't strive to maximize flavoring when cooking healthier meals at home - but can you make a whole new "diet" out of the concept?

Anyone who has had experience with this diet is most welcome to comment.

Thanks for the update Rebecca.
I have been back on this way of eating and doing very well. Having simple food, correct flavor combos is not that hard and it really does seem to quiet the appetite.
Moving more outside and at the gym plays a big part too but we all know that!
Thanks!

For the past week I have been cooking all my meals from the recipes provided in this book. Out of over 21 tried recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner & snacks there were only 2 that I didn't care for. That's amazing to me. I've never tried a new recipe book let alone a diet book that has given me 19 new great recipes in just one week. I'm amazed at how delicious the recipes are, how easy they are to make, and of the difference it's made in my life. The book has taught me how to eat healthier which in turn has helped me to have more energy during the day. I am a mom of a one year old and I'm thrilled that the extra baby weight is finally melting away thanks to my new way of life. I've lost 3 pounds this week and have 8 more to go but I'll be eating the Flavor Point way for the rest of my life! For anyone who is interested in eating healthier I would recommend you give this a try!

I've read the book and tomorrow (Sunday) I will shop and cook and begin. The only reason I'm proceeding is because 1. the theory makes sense to me and 2. the many positive things everyone has said. I don't like to cook but I will commit to this for six weeks and pray that along the way I will get hooked. I have a good exercise history, the one missing piece is my diet, although not terrible (occasional junk food and binging), I just eat too much, to fullness and beyond. I don't gain but I never lose despite all my jogging and gym visits. I weigh 162 and really should weigh not more than 135. Please wish me luck.

Hmmmmm......

I bought the book and read it, but wanted to see if the concept worked before I went to the trouble of complying with the diet.

Initially, I simply bought a bottle of any vending machine drink (grapefruit juice, ginger ale, coke, OJ, anything with a distinctive flavor) and drank 1/3 of it with each meal. This definitely affected my appetite. It was a very curious sensation I don't think one can fully appreciate without actually doing it. I would never have thought simply drinking the same flavor with breakfast and lunch would kill my appetite for dinner (when I am usually the hungriest.)

Secondly, I did the same thing except I only ate sweet/bitter combinations all day, or salty/sour combinations, along with a similar drink. Being a real sweet eater (carb type) I never would have thought one Hershey bar with a cup of coffee late in the evening would almost make me throw up. This is how much it killed my appetite.

I will try this a little longer just to experience the full effect, then go in for a weight loss kill. I am already fully convinced it is the jumping from one new taste sensation to the next that increases the amount we are eating in America today; too much stimulation for the brain.

Dr. Katz has made a breakthrough, although most (as this blog testifies) will not be able to wrap their head around it.

My family of 4 agreed to try this plan for the 42 days. My husband, an 18 yr old, a twelve year old and myself have collectively lost 36 lbs in two weeks. We have stuck to the plan in an effort to see if there was any truth to the claim. At this point we are very impressed with the results. Not only with the weight loss but also with the satisfying meals. Each of us have been completely satisfied with the flavor and quantity that most of the meals provide. We are especially surprised with how little it takes to satisfy the sweet tooth that each of us has. Over all we are encouraged and satisfied.

I tried this diet after reading an article about it in my local newspaper. The idea of it was intriguing and seemed so simple to stay the course on a themed day.
To make a long story short - I lost 35 pounds doing this diet and it inspired me to study nutrition. After much school, I am now a practicing Wellness Coach and Nutritionist.
I fell in love with how easy it was not only to follow but to encourage my clients to try as well.
It has the nutrional facts and science to back it up along with the delicious recipes and menues. I hear clients say all the time "I didn't even know I liked...(lentils) (bulgar wheat) (plain yogurt)" etc. I also hear "The meals are SO tasty and easy to make, I actually enjoy following this plan!"
The plan follows what most nutrionists will recommend: High fiber, Low fat, Moderate lean protein while avoiding all the "bad" chemical substances found in commercially prepared foods.
You owe it to yourself to try this "diet" I refrain from calling it a diet when it's actually a guide to eating right - for life!! You can eat healthy and eat good with The Flavor Point.
