Lindsay Lohan: Bulimia Exposed

Lindsay Lohan in Vanity Fair

"I was sick. Everyone was scared. And I was scared too. I had people sit me down and say, 'You're going to die if you don't take care of yourself.'"
The February issue of Vanity Fair is quoting actress Lindsay Lohan. She's talking about the confrontation and exposure of her eating disorder - bulimia.

Back in June I wondered "One can only imagine the internal mental strife that goes on within actresses such as Lindsay Lohan - who can turn into a waif in a matter of months." Now I have a fair idea.

Mia the Thief
Bulimia (or "mia" as some refer to it) is a deceptive beast. All the denial, all the secrets, all the shame, all the blame. "I've been exercising too hard", "...just losing puppy fat", "I just haven't been eating properly". The sad truth is - many young women who become so desperately thin - have become entangled with an eating disorder.

Bulimia is like a private 'survival kit'. All the angst, all the stress, - it all gets poured into the next binge-and-purge.

The only trouble is....

  • the fainting spells (electrolyte imbalance)
  • cramping joints and muscles (very low potassium)
  • irregular heartbeat (very low potassium)
  • the tormenting mood swings and bouts of depression...

It all starts one day - with one episode. That first time in a fit of rage - the food is vomited out - with all the pain and the shame. From then on, Bulimia will want to get its claws in - and never let go - until it has stolen some of your life away. It may destroy your relationships too, or even put you in a hospital bed... or a coffin.

Don't Copy Them
Don't try to emulate the Hollywood divas. Since when does money and fame buy you health and peace of mind and peace of spirit?

Lindsay Lohan - I wish you well in your journey to evict bulimia from your body and from your life.

NOTE: For eating disorder support - see Something Fishy - or a (very personal) story at Living on Empty.

UPDATE (12th January): Ms Lohan claims the Vanity Fair article was untrue, and that her words were misused and misconstrued (via TeenPeople). Who knows what the truth is? Does it matter? What matters is that the advice regarding bulimia remains the same. Eating disorders are thieves - don't give them a chance to get started.

On the news tonight dealing with Lindsay Lohan, they also mentioned that she admitted to not only Bulimia, but meddling around in Cocaine experimentation.

This entry is not shedding light to the entire picture, only that she had finally admitted to an eating disorder that many had expected.

I also struggle with bulimia and I am so proud of Lindsey for admitting her problem and seeking help. Eating disorders in and of themselves are like an addiction and need to be dealt with accordingly. Good Luck to Lindsey and her family during this healing time!

i am also dealing with this illness.I am fed up and want to get rid of it but do not know how

can we share something?

I do wonder if Lindsay's equally-skinny friend, Nicole Richie, will also come out and say she has an eating disorder?

Reply
Jan

No April, Nicole just lost her "puppy fat". She doesn't have a problem, and neither does Kate Hudson. Kate will sue if you say she has a problem.

If you go to http://theskinnywebsite.com/site/ (it is a blog about celebrities and weight), you'll be disturbed at the comments (and the blog owner her/himself) saying that Hilary Duff "doesn't look too thin" or that Nicole "looks great".

I think it was pretty much inevitable that Lindsay had an eating disorder. The pressure to be thin in Hollywood is just so intense that if you don't know the right way to shape up, you go a different and seemingly easier route. Celebs like Jennifer Garner or Uma Thurman got in shape by working out and eating healthy foods, but that is a lot to handle for a lot of people. It's much "easier" for them to throw up their food or take an appetite suppressing drug like cocaine or speed. I'm glad Lindsay's getting some help now though.

Lets talk about the drugs. This girl was on the fast track to death. Bulimia and drugs, not a good combo. I always figured she was on them. I can't think of any actor or actress that has not dabbled in drugs at one time or another in their career.

Its sad that there doesn't seem to be anymore clean cut role models out there for young people. While it is good that Lindsay is seeking help and treatment, what will all of her young fans think now? "Oh Lindsay did it, so why don't I" It is a shame what these actresses have to go through just to stay in the spotlight.

Wow, Jan.... some of the somments on theskinnywebsite.com were really disturbing. I felt compelled to write this little rant and post it into one of their discussions:

As much as you *seemingly* condemn those you feel are slightly more gaunt than the rest of the celebrity bag-of-bones brigade, there is no getting around the fact that you are still perpetuating the thin obsessed agenda. Fixating on celebrities weight fluctuations; laudation for women who "look fabulous" after "bulking up" by putting five pounds on their 90lb frames (still leaving them grossly underweight); these things merely continue the cycle of self-loathing and regarding emaciated as fashionable. Let's praise these women when they get back to a normal, HEALTHY weight. A weight that includes menstrual cycles and is free of visable ribs and heart palpitations. And let's not constantly criticize the ladies who actally weigh three digits and look like women as opposed to pre-pubescent little boys. Bulimia might be a quick way to that Karen Carpenter body, but bile-rotted teeth and lanugo aren't too sexy, people.

daaamn i'm feisty tonite haha

You guys need to realize that the website (theskinnywebsite.com) is a humor site that is making fun of the whole stick-thin celebrity thing. The person running the site realizes that the whole thing is ridiculous, so she decided to make a site that makes fun of it all. Don't take it so seriously, people!

Reply
Jan

*k*, that is exactly how I feel. Thank you for writing that. I posted the link to "The Emaciation of Hilary Duff" when the blog owner posted that Hilary was looking perfectly normal. No she isn't!

Julie, while the purpose of the site might be humor, the commenters who are praising the stick-thin celebs aren't doing so in jest. It is a reflection of their thoughts. My commentary was equivalent to Jim's shock at the posts at the Brazilian Diet Pills topic here. It is shocking to read that. And yes, I do take it seriously, just as take all the "I'm 13 and 5'7 and 115lb and my belly is so fat! I know I'm gross, how can I lose weight?" posts here seriously.

Reply
Julie

Yeah, the obsession to be thin and emulate the celebs is getting out of control. I'm scared to see how many teens will follow in Lindsay's footsteps and "become" bulimic to copy her.

I knew from the very begining that Lindsey had an ED because there´s no way you can be that skinny in such a very short time of period, I mean, I suffered from bulimia too it´s a very complicated Ed..I am just glad that she came out because is her the one that suffers and her family..congrats Lindsey,I hope that your confession helps other celebs like u to come out and admit their problem

Reply
Jan

Julie, you have no idea. In another post just here someone said that they were 5'7" and a beginning weight of 120lb, but with "self-control" she was now 93lb. Of course it didn't take long for someone to ask for details on how she did it.

It is on the post about Biggest Loser Club: Free Trial, if someone wants to see it for themselves.

Eating disorders are serious medical conditions and require professional treatment.

Cocaine users, while they tend to loose their appetites, do not necessarily have eating disorders.

it was so so clear that she was bulimic, as someone stuggling with it at the moment i KNOW the tell tale signs, and when she showed up to red carpets with those obvious sores at the courners of her mouth there was no disputing it!

Reply
Nicole

Yes, Olivia- when you know the signs it's so easy to tell, isn't it?! (I'm struggling with bulimia too). The first time I saw pictures of her and her glands were all swollen I though "Oh crap..." I don't really care for her acting or personality but I definitely wouldn't wish an eating disorder on anyone.
I think it's likely she also had something else going on, whether it was drugs or anorexia, because it's not common to lose that much weight that quickly with bulimia. Although everyone is different.
I hope she does get better.

im bulimic.
i find it sick and disturbing that lindsy told the world about her problem.
people copy their idols.
i wonder how many mini lindsy's will be throwing up their guts and snorting up coke now?
builima is serious, it's individual to every person who has it, different reasons, different methods.
you can not categorise it.
so please don't.

Jan

Alanah, good luck in your recovery.

Jim - have you seen the latest development, where Lindsay says VF misconstrued her words, and she denies having admitted to an eating disorder and drug use?

My cousin died of bulimia last Thanksgiving. She left behind her new husband and 8 month old son. She wouldn't seek help and hid it from the family until it was too late. If you have an eating disorder, seek help immediately and take responsiblity for your actions.

Im a 15yr old male and I am a big fan of Lindsay Lohan In the 8th grade i lose like 35lbs in one month ,but as i got to high school i became obsessed im depressed every day about my weight and i think that the only way out is Bulimia. I kno i might need help but i just cant deal with being fat!! or even thinking im fat!!

Reply

Hey everyone i'm posting this comment not because i'm a big fan of Lindsay but because I'm a fan of health. For three years i've been battling bulimia and spouts of anorexia and its so incredibly painful mentally, emotionally, and physically the more you get into it and become trapped. Treatment is critcal so if all the rumors are true about Lohan, I wish her, her family, and her treatment team well and that she will recover far easier than me and many others. It's a deadly disease I pray that no young fans will decide to follow in her dangerous footsteps.

It's cool to see people having healthy, balanced discussion about this subject. Yeah, it's time more people talked about all the downsides to ed's. When I was struggling for more than a decade with various types of disordered eating, I was very triggered by celebs slimming down so quickly. I would look at them and think 'that's what I need to look like.' Today, I'm healthier in my thinking (and my eating) and when I see pics of various celebs who are essentially walking skeletons with beautiful makeup, hair and clothes, I see the world of pain that's going on behind their beautiful eyes.

So, yes, let's keep thinking about and praying for those who are trapped in an unhealthy cycle of disordered eating, negative body image, and hopelessness. And let's keep our eyes open for those who buck the trends, and are comfortable in their own skin.

I think it's bull that she is now saying they misconstrued her words in vanity fair and what not. The signs for those of us with and ED are completely there the glands the sores the expression on her face the only thing that disappointed about her finally admitting the truth was that she turned around to deny it again

Reply
Jan

Seeminglyme, I agree with you. I think that besides the eating and drug issues, she is also a compulsive liar. I wish her mother would parent her, instead of cover up for her behavior (like with the elaborate "flying tea cup down the stairs" story to explain another hospital stay). I just hope that one day she can do the right thing for herself, like Drew Barrymore did, since it doesn't look like she'll get any parenting from that mother of hers.

I think Lindseys problem was no one elses business, until she spoke about it. People were trying to get the news out of her but that probably only mad it worse.

Uh yah ...I wish these girls are reading this webiste and seeing the photos of themselves...if they can honestly go out into reality, terrifying peoples sight with their mind boggling skinny appeal...Drives me mental....Then you (As in you "Celebs") just give everybody more incentive to go out and party til they drop, OH and of course your oh so important exercise! Yah Im starting to think that your idea of exercise is completely different from mine, see mine idea is involving somewhere along actual working out.....Not Bend, Sniff, Puke and Spit.... then tell myself that was so hard go and light a smoke get into your BAzillion dollar car go home do the same thing and call it a night....yah I have no sympathy for celebs..... your just richer then most who are just as fake and brat like as you.boowooo I have a million dollars...and I cant eat.....WHATS wrong with me!? OK here goes...I am BULIMIC and have been for over 5 yrs!! That's the first time I've ever confessed, so please don't be too harsh. I tell myself I'll stop everyday and then.....I do it again. I'm almost more scared of being fat than of dying from bulimia. I weigh myself everyday to make sure I stay within 115-117lbs and I'm 5'6'. If I get to 118 or more I tell myself I'm a fat cow and need to be punished. What's wrong with me? What do I do? I don't want to die from this sick obsession!! Does anyone have any suggestions??

Hi Beverly.
First of all I am bulimic too (recovering) and I understand what it's like to tell yourself you will stop and then not be able to. Please understand that this is not something you can force yourself to simply stop any more than a person who is depressed can just stop being depressed. Can you go see a counselor or a therapist of some kind? I did this and it really helped me a lot. Also this is a great website: www.somethingfishy.org
The woman who runs it is a recovered anorexic.
Good luck.

I struggle with Bulimia as well. I really look up to the ones that are strong enough to get help. I have tried to help my self by taking the step to tell my husband and really close friends around me.
This is an addiction and people that are not going through this, it is hard for them to understand. It's a part of your life, it's something that you really don't even think about, you just do it. I am embarrased and ashamed of my problem. Most are, by trying to hide it. It only hurts to hide it. My husband has thrown my scale away and he is ready to take off all door knobs to the bathrooms in our house, he wants to help. I want to help myself as well i am so scaried of gaining weight.

Thank you so much Nic and Jessica!! I'm been doing better since my confession. I've stopped weighing myself since 08/11/06, binged/purged 3x(pretty good for me) and I am seeking professional help.My next step is to tell my family. Thank you so much for the words of encouragement.

Lyndsay has way many more problems then just Bulimia.

Lindsay must be experimenting with some sort of drug in order to get that thin so quickly. Bulimia will slim a person but it would take years apon years to become so thin from bulimia. Its the pure starvation that causes a person to become emaciated. Usually with bulimia the stomach swells, and people rarely get all the food purged out. So either she's EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified, which would imply starvation as well as binging and purging) or she's on drugs at the same time.
