10 Free Tools for Weight Loss

Everybody likes free stuff. If you know where to look, there is an abundance of free weight loss tools to be found on-line. Weight loss tools are suitable for people who like numbers, and like keeping track of things. Some of us prefer to just "wing it".

Enjoy.

  • FitDay - An extremely popular on-line diet tracker.
  • NutriDiary - Tracks food, calories, and weight.
  • ExRx - Animations of hundreds of exercises (by muscle group)
  • SparkPeople - Diet and exercise program that has now removed its fees.
  • PeerTrainer - Diet and exercise program - where you become part of a group.
  • Weight Loss Calculators (caloriesperhour.com) - BMR, BMI, RMR, etc.
  • Weight Loss Calculators (freedieting.com) - macro-nutrient ratios, body fat %, etc.

Nutrition info:

  • NutritionData - Has comprehensive information on most foods.
  • DietFacts - As well as the standard foods, has manually-entered data from many restaurants
  • CalorieKing - Has comprehensive nutritional info, but their Portion Watch tool is unique - it has photos of different portion sizes of many popular foods. (Note that CalorieKing's diet program is fee-based).

If any of these tools are no longer free - please leave a comment below.

I truly appreciate the information you share in this blog. It is so helpful!

Concerning CalorieKing, I use their portion watch tool all the time. I also bought their book with all the info on so many foods. If someone buys it, I suggest you get it at a book store. I had to wait a long time, buying from them, then found out most bookseller have it, and if you have one nearby, no shipping & handling!

Hi!

Great list -- I'd also like to suggest our website: Calorie-Count.com

We offer one of the largest, searchable, organized food nutrition databases (more than 40k items) coupled with a food log, activity log, personal weight loss journals. You can communicate with our more than 70,000 members on the forums and by making friends with similar interests.

In addition we have just released the "Eat Meter" toolbar for Internet Explorer and Firefox which helps keep you on track with your daily calorie goal.

I've used NutriDiary for the past 5 months and have found that's it is easy and quick to track my meals. In addition tracking individual foods you eat, you can also create "meals" that you have often and simply click the entire meal to be added to your daily log. For instance I often have a dinner of grilled chicken breast, small baked potato, carrots and broccoli. Instead of entering each of those food individually, I just click that dinner/meal item I created and it's added to my log.

It also tracks all the nutritional information for your daily intake. Which has proven to be useful several times. A month ago my Dr. suggested I take a calcium supplement so that my total intake would equal 1200mg. I was able to pull up the report of my last 10 weeks and found that my daily average of calcium was already at 600mg, so I just adjusted the supplement accordingly.

Check it out, it's really easy and oh so helpful!

I'm a big FitDay fan myself. It's great if you like to track your progress and input your food and activities for the day. I also like CalorieKing...awesome list~thanks!

Fitday is great --- especially for weight tracking, I think - because it's good to see that you're in a better place from one year ago, definitely helps with the motivation!

Erik, I love calorie-count.com The database is probably the best out there. I have a similar site but in Portuguese, and I aspire to have a database as great as yours. Mine is still the most comprehensive in Portuguese, so if anyone who speaks the language wants to check it out:

And yes, it is 100% free.

hey i really am kind of off he subject but i need some help to i need to loose 10lbs quick for a bikini comptiotion what do i do ????

Trisha: quick loss is water loss. Absolutely no salt, no carb, and tons of water. From what I hear from people who do these competitions, they live on chicken breasts with lemon and herbs, lettuce, celery, and a gallon of water for like a week before the day. Then the day before it, they take diuretics or drink distilled water to lose even more water.

I'd like to add our new site to your list, if you don't mind.

NutriMirror is a completely free diet, exercise, and nutrition tracking system. The site also has Body Mass Index, Resting Metabolic Rate, and calorie calculators, and a food database that's searchable either by food name or nutrient value.

There are no social networking features, as we've designed the site to be extremely easy to use without any distractions. There's nothing to get between you and your goals. Check it out if you get a chance:
