Detox Diets Don't Work

Detox diets are popular after the holiday season. Detoxifying is a huge business - there are hundreds of books, pills, supplements, and kits that go to make up a multi-million dollar industry. The BBC News Magazine calls it all "empty promises".
A recent study by American researchers also concluded that detox diets do no more than the body's own natural system to get rid of toxins. They said most modern books and detox kits serve up "empty promises".
Maybe it's semantics - what exactly is detoxification anyway? An authentic detox is more like a stomach pump after a drug overdose. The human body has it's own mechanisms to filter out excessive toxins anyway.
Fewer headaches, for example, is probably the result of being fully hydrated due to drinking so much water and better skin may be due to eating more antioxidant-packed fruit and vegetables. The concept and principles behind a detox are good - it's all about cleaning up a junky diet. But what's the point in cleaning up a poor diet for 3 days - just to return to your previous excesses?
If in doubt, stick to one of the simplest and best detoxes - lots of water.

"Exercise is not recommended during the 3 Day Fruit Flush because of the very low calorie intake, but is encouraged afterward, when dieters move to a higher-calorie diet, Robb says."
"If you want to try the 3 Day Fruit Flush, add a daily multivitamin, make sure you get at least 50 grams of protein per day, and check with your health care provider first to be sure it's safe for you"
ReplyI did the fruit flush twice. The 1st time I lost 11lbs and the 2nd time 9lbs. I did not use the J.Robb powder but instead brought "Metabolic Reset" at my local Whole Foods Store. I am planning to attempt the diet again this week, but this time I brought J.Robb's powder just because it was cheaper than what I had been buying. Both times I did the diet I didn't 100% stick to it in that on all 3 days I didn't drink the shake with my last meal but instead used 6oz protein...specifically the salmon pouch by Bumblebee. I lost weight both time but gained it back. You have to be prepared to maintain once you lose the weight & I wasn't ready. Hopefully this time will be different. Good Luck to all of you who try it.
