Detox Diets Don't Work

Detox diets are popular after the holiday season. Detoxifying is a huge business - there are hundreds of books, pills, supplements, and kits that go to make up a multi-million dollar industry. The BBC News Magazine calls it all "empty promises".

A recent study by American researchers also concluded that detox diets do no more than the body's own natural system to get rid of toxins. They said most modern books and detox kits serve up "empty promises".

Maybe it's semantics - what exactly is detoxification anyway? An authentic detox is more like a stomach pump after a drug overdose. The human body has it's own mechanisms to filter out excessive toxins anyway.

Fewer headaches, for example, is probably the result of being fully hydrated due to drinking so much water and better skin may be due to eating more antioxidant-packed fruit and vegetables.
The concept and principles behind a detox are good - it's all about cleaning up a junky diet. But what's the point in cleaning up a poor diet for 3 days - just to return to your previous excesses?

If in doubt, stick to one of the simplest and best detoxes - lots of water.

I have adjusted the Fast Track Detox diet (Anne Louise G) and have not only been on this new detox diet for myself but have had 2 friends also try it. Results were:
Myself - lost 26 lbs in the course of 2 attempts over a 2 month period on a reduced calorie diet, no lactose and exceeded the amount of water intake, made a few meals as juicing meals and integrated a daily wheatgrass shot. First attempt lost 13 lbs and 2nd attempt lost 13 lbs
hardest part was the sequel for me but have found positive eating habits have followed. My friend did detox diet (regular)and lost 11 lbs. Another friend lost 9 lbs and has gained back 3. I see that if you deny dairy and stick to a low calorie diet it works best and keeps your will power strong. I did adjust my supplements for the loss of dairy and have since subsituted almond milk and olive oil where dairy once was and have increased vitamin D, calcium and potassium to compensate for my dairy extinction.

Hello all! I have read every single article so far on this page. I am on day one (1) of the fruit flush diet, and let's just say, I CANNOT wait until tomorrow so I can eat!!! I am usually not the "dieting type", so going all day without eating so far has driven me crazy and I cannot wait until dinner tonight...

Even though most of the people that have posted on this site will never read this (their entries were from January 2006, and this is now October 2007), I was encouraged to keep going! :) I hope to start watching my daily diet, and drinking lots of water. Just wanted to say thank you for all the motivation, and good luck to followers in the near future!

Hello all:
Getting ready to start the fruit flush detox. I am in the medical profession and have really odd hours. My first "meal" is at 3 in the a.m. which would make my last at 1 in the afternoon. That leaves 5 to 7 hours open before I retire for the evening at around 8 p.m. Any suggestions on how to adjust this to fit my schedule?

Hello!
I began day 1 today. I'm not so so hungary and it's already 12.15. I keep thinking about that salad though... I'm 5'7 at 155lbs hoping to get back down to 135. I've read all of these stories and I cant wait to see my results on Wednesday! I'll post how things go.

About the diet details- all you really have to do is google "fruit diet". Some newstation in Baltimore did a story on it and it has all of the instructions there.

Good luck all!

Oh my it's day 2 and I'm feeling much better. Last night I was starving! I couldn't even wait until 6 to eat my salad. I ate at 5.30. I didn't even feel so full afterwards so I went to bed a little earlier than usual.

So today the fruits are great! I'm not getting really full but it's ok because it doesn't bother me much. I actually feel like I have so much energy! I've been working really hard and again can't wait for that salad.

Hi everyone, I've done the 3 day fruit detox a couple times before, and since it worked pretty well (lost 23 lbs in total last year), I decided to graduate to the 14 day fruit diet by Jay Robb. I just purchased the e-book for the official "The Fruit Diet," so if anyone is interested, I can email it them.

In return, I'd really appreciate it if someone could email me the e-book for the "3-Day Fruit Flush" plan. I lost mine when my computer crashed.

My email is falling.right.side.up@gmail.com

Thanks, and good luck to you all!

Help, please! January 08 First Magazine, 4-day detox plan. Day 1 started with cranberry juice/water/flax seed, I think, boiled. There were beets and artichoke hearts involved. The ENTIRE issue had awesome articles (mercury toxicity with fillings and the right hair cut for your face), but the thing I want most is that detox plan. I'm getting ready to call/write the publisher, but if you can help, please write me. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Don't know when you typed this but I too was in search of this amazing detox that I had done last spring. However, I couldn't remember the magazine I had seen it in. Afetr reading your comment I went to myfirstforwomen.com, clicked on the shopping list, at look in the archives for past issues, and January has the ingredients for the detox. It doesn't give you the plan, but I can guess at it, it also gives the name of the book they pulled this from. Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Hey Fruit Flushers!
I'm currently living in Hong Kong and without a credit card after having to cancel mine because an online buy went sour and thousands of dollars were charged to my card.
Would anyone be so generous as to mail me the Fruit Flush Diet? I have it on my computer at home and the last bthing I want is to ask my mom to to my apartment, heaven knows she loves any reason to snoop.

The flush works like a charm if you just need a quick clean. I always feel so revitalized after and my bathing suit just fits better. It's only $5 and when trying to lose weight a little good Karma couldn't hurt right?

You'll hear from me in 3 days then I hope.

can anyone please answer the 3 following questions. 1) I am assuming there are obviously no appetite suppressants/stimulants allowed, right? ie: lipo6. Did I not also read no multivitamin? 2) time of day you have shake/fruit not important as long as they're in 2 hour intervals? Thank you so much!!!!!!!

Hello all! After reading everyone's comments about the fruit flush, i'm excited to start today!! I am about to drink my first shake and I am carrying a ziplock bag with powder because I am classes all day and I won't be back to my dorm til 5:30 tonight, so right before salad time! And I am definetly willing to go to sleep early tonight.

My question was if I was to do the detox this week until thursday, when can I do it again? Like how long should I wait before doing the detox again? Should I wait a couple of weeks? Or if i do it the following week, how much affect is it going to have if my body is already detoxified from this week?

And i realized after all the liquids I'm going to have to drink, I think sitting in the back of class near the door is the best idea.

Help me out! Thanks!!!

Samira.

i think the book said depending on your weight and health you can do it for 3 days every 12 days for no longer than 2 months.

started today. on my first shake. i am 112 and want to be 108 (i know i may sound vain but i have been on a diet for months and find that the last few pounds are almost unshakeable, i am very petite (under 5 feet) and want to look a bit more proportional. will post on saturday to tell you what happened.

ps these shakes taste pretty bad (the vanilla anyway)

do not take anti-hunger pills or anything like that. this is a "detox" so i am giving up my vitamins for 3 days because after all, they do have chemicals. u need to take the shkes and then the fruit on day 2 and 3 every two hours, thats the secret so that you dont go nutz at 3 pm and eat something. even if you are fulll you are supposed to take she stuff ever two hours.

Hello fellow dieters! I know I am not the first to ask this, but I cannot find the 2 day detox juice flush that was in Woman's World magazine last fall. I would really like to do this again since it worked so well the last time. If anyone could tell me what the recipes are or exactly which issue it was so I could maybe find it at the library I would be very appreciative!! Thanks

I haven't heard about this fruit flush diet, but I will tell you, that the best diet in the world is to eat balanced meals with very low fat, no wheat, fruit, no salt and lots of water. The meals should include 2oz of lean meat, 1/2 cup of rice/potatos, lots of veggies. The meals should be frequent, every 2-3 hours, comprising real food. Food you would eat naturally, making sure to choose low fat meats and keeping it a 2oz for women and 4 oz for men. This diet is Michael Thurmans's Six Week Body makeover. It is remarkable in that you can lose weight quickly and sculpt your body easily without killing yourself with too strenuous exercise. In fact, the exercises must not be strenuous, e.g., walking as opposed to running or the ellipitical keeping the heart rate in the fat burning zone. This way of eating is natural, do-able, and can be sustained over a life-time while ocassionally treating yourself with off-plans indulgences, which all people will do. But then back to your regular routine. You will lose so much weight so fast and you did it with balanced food, with the major exception of not eating any wheat. I found out through this diet that wheat caused many problems for me, including joint pain, bloating, rapid weight gain, and feelings of failure or lack of control. I found out that I loved wheat, but it did not love me and when I began to eat it again, I experienced the above symptoms. I think a lot of people may not realize that they have a wheat sensitivity and may need to avoid wheat or eat it sparingly. Every diet will work temporarily, this way of eating is so easy to transition into a lifestyle that it shouldn't be called a diet. But it works and it works for a lifetime and for every body type. After trying them all, this one did the trick.

Which body 'type' where you following on the 6-week body makeover? I've looked into it but it's so expensive I haven't purchased it. The online test shows me to be a 'D'. I'd like to have an idea of what foods I'd be allowed to eat before I spend the money

Just found this blog. I am day one on the fruit flush after reading about it in First. It will be a good way to kick start weight loss. I have to say it is not too bad so far though I am doing a few things differently. First, I am not giving up my coffee. Also, I need more energy mid-day then in the evening so I will be eating the salads during the day. After the three days I plan to continue with the South Beach Diet. My mom has been on the SB diet for a month and lost 20 lbs.

I've done this program three days per week for a month and have continued to drink coffee; it has not stalled my results in the sligtest. Please post your results with the salad mid-day; I'd love to hear how that works for you. I lift weights every morning and I'm considering having a protein shake prior to and immediately following my workouts then just having the veggie salad for dinner. The protein around the workout really helps build muscle more effectively. I'm anxious to see if changing the order of the "meals" still yields good recults.

Tomicha

Thanks for the information. You're right, drinking coffee did not seem to make a difference. I just have to have my coffee! Also, eating the salad mid-day did not make a difference. On the third day I split up the 6 cups and had 3 cups at lunch and the rest at dinner. I also exercise often and therefore extra protein is necessary. How has it been doing this every week for a month? I may try that or at least one day a week do day #1 of the diet (protein shakes and salad).

Tomicha

Well, after day one on the fruit flush, I have lost 3 lbs. I believe this is mostly due to not eating "bulky" foods and eliminating waste from the body. I do feel better. Drinking coffee does not seem to make a difference (I even use creamer). I am not trying to detoxify but just jump start healthier eating. Correction from my last entry, my mom has been on SB diet for almost 8 weeks.

Okay, I was down 8 lbs. after the third day of the fruit flush. That is encouraging and I feel good. So for two days I have been eating healthier (1 protein, 1 card, 1 fruit or 2 servings veggies at each meal and light snacks throughout the day). So, after two days I expected the scale to go back up a few pounds but it hasn't! I plan to stay on this healthy eating trend to drop the remaining weight.

I have lost 90lbs in the past 11 months. I occasionally do Ann Gittlemans 3 day detox with juice.. I only do the 24 hr fast tho and feel wonderful afterwards. I had to get back to the basics of food. Nothing processed nothing white, very little beef and pork but lots of chicken and seafood. Tons of fruit and veggi's, low sodium and high fiber.

I log my food each day, plan my meals and eat clean. I feel like a new person.. but I also think a short fast is wonderful for your body..

You can find everything you need to learn how to eat healthy at Sparkpeople.com and the site is free. It is composed of teams of people working together to lose the weight online. They provide all the tools you need.. nutrition logs, exercise videos and menus if you want them. I know they have changed my life and I am 52yo now. I weighed 330lbs when I started and could barely walk for 10 minutes.. I now walk miles each day and hike on the weekends. Come get healthy with me..

I just started the flush this morning with a Genisoy protein powder....YUCK! We cannot add anything to it can we? As far as I can see, it does not contain those two ingredients that need to be avoided. My question is can I take tylenol or something to help alleviate the headaches?

Thanks.

Reply

the author says no on both counts. i personally have modified the plan to suit my needs/wants in a large number of ways, so i might not be the best source of advice. the herb stevia is okay to add to the shake; it's an herbal sweetener with no calories. i personally hate it b/c it tastes like aspartame. most protein shakes are miraculously improved by blending them with ice; i don't get why, but it's been true in my experience. if you're going to take any kind of pain killer, i would take asprin or ascriptin (which is asprin coated in maalox so it's safer for your stomach) b/c tylenol & advil are both really rough on your liver. that's just my little opinion; disregard any component of it you'd like to.

Hi all, I am in the cycle Lindsay described, and it does feel nice to hear someone else describe it and know I am not alone. I can also really relate with Yvonne - my husband is on a 15 month deployment to Iraq and I have 3 little ones at home. I had a baby while he has been gone and I am the heaviest I've ever been and feel horrible about myself. Sometimes I don't want to go out in public because I think I look so horrible. I have put on weight through 6 pregnancies and being quite the sugar addict. I have tried numerous times to eat healthier and exercise but never stick with it long enough I guess. So, with my husband due home in about 8 weeks, I have renewed willpower and am trying to really make it this time and lose 50 pounds (not before he gets home of course). But I have already fallen several times with 1/3 box of Oreos, 4 cupcakes one day or even just by eating too many wheatables. I fit into quite a few of the statements on the Overeaters Anonymous page but I don't want to continue this way and don't want to be fat. I came here while researching the "fruit flush" and it sounds like it could work for me. I am not trying to shortcut but could use a jumpstart to a healthier lifestyle. I've hired a babysitter for 2 hours a day so I can exercise and have been eating mostly fruits and veggies anyway for 2 weeks now but haven't seen any results. People tell me it takes at least 3 weeks to see any results sometimes so I am trying to hang in there. Thanks for this forum!

Hi there Jenn. If you are exercising, make sure you're eating something more substantial than just fruits and veggies; you need to get some high quality protein in on the days that you work out. Hang in there! You can do it!

Hi all,
I am at the end of Day 2 of Detox Fruit flush diet and, like the person who said he's a trainer, I don't want to lose a lot (5-6 lb). People say I am skinny (I'm 5'8" and weigh about 130-133 lb. I used to stay around 124 lb only because this is the weigh that allow me to be the most energetic, not feel tired and slugish. After Day 1 I had 3 lb less. Today it was tougher than yesterday but I also did not rest or "take it easy" at all.. maybe I should've. I cheated yesterday by adding salt on my meat/just a touch though/ and today by replacing two of the fruit meals with a protein smoothy mixed with skim milk instead of water.. life got in the way of being disciplined and eat every two hours. I am planning to post the final result after tomorrow. My question: I LOVE EATING hence I watch waht I eat in order to stay the way I am. I am afraid that after this deprivation I will eat anything in sight just because "I deserve it". Hmm.. thanks for your comments, very useful to read some feedback.

What exactly is a detox or cleansing diet? Their advocates say our bodies are constantly overloaded with toxins from pollution, cigarette smoke, alcohol, caffeine, and processed foods. The thinking is that, as these toxins build in our bodies, they can be responsible for a number of health problems, such as weight gain, energy loss, and dull skin. You then rid your body of toxins by following a special diet that significantly restricts and reduces food intake. ----------------
