Detox Diets Don't Work

Detox diets are popular after the holiday season. Detoxifying is a huge business - there are hundreds of books, pills, supplements, and kits that go to make up a multi-million dollar industry. The BBC News Magazine calls it all "empty promises".
A recent study by American researchers also concluded that detox diets do no more than the body's own natural system to get rid of toxins. They said most modern books and detox kits serve up "empty promises".
Maybe it's semantics - what exactly is detoxification anyway? An authentic detox is more like a stomach pump after a drug overdose. The human body has it's own mechanisms to filter out excessive toxins anyway.
Fewer headaches, for example, is probably the result of being fully hydrated due to drinking so much water and better skin may be due to eating more antioxidant-packed fruit and vegetables. The concept and principles behind a detox are good - it's all about cleaning up a junky diet. But what's the point in cleaning up a poor diet for 3 days - just to return to your previous excesses?
If in doubt, stick to one of the simplest and best detoxes - lots of water.

I started the fruit flush diet today. Day 1 was ok, didn't really like drinking the shakes but I wasn't hungry. I've had bad headaches though. Hopefully Day 2 won't be too bad. Good luck with the flushing ;) everyone.
Replyi just started the flush today - it is 2:44 and I am hungry. I even had a small salad with just lettuce and tomato and a small amount of Olive oil at 2:00 because I was soo hungry... I have little will power though and I am a snacker, but hopefully I will stick it out best I can and this will still be a beneficial 3 days. We will see-
ReplyDay 2 today, was really busy at work and forgot to eat my fruit at 4 pm. Oh well, I hope it didn't mess things up. I went running for a bit...too tired now. Having my salad but may add fish instead of the shake tonight. When I weighed this morning I was down 2 lbs. Good luck everyone.
ReplyDay two today and down 2lbs. For dinner last night I had a salad with lettuce, tomato, avocado and shrimp with lime juice and it was good! I too may have a salad with shrimp again instead of the shake...
ReplyJ.R. congrats on the 2 lbs lost.
ReplyIt was day 3 today no weight lost still only 2 lbs down. Couldn't stay on track today. Ate very few fruits (4 oranges and 1 apple until dinner). For dinner had fish instead on the shake, avocado, tomato and baby carrots. I will weigh tomorrow, hopefully should be few more lbs down.
The 3 day Fruit Flush is really easy. On Day 1, you pour 1 1/4 cups of Jay Robb's Whey or Egg White protein into a quart container, and add 32 oz. of water. Throughout Day 1, you drink 6 oz. at the following times: 8AM, 10AM, 12PM,2PM, and 4PM. At 6 PM, you can have 4-6 cups of plain lettuce, preferably mixed greens, romaine or spinach, with all raw vegetables (cucumber, peppers, sprouts, onion, carrots, etc.) Then add 1-2 Tbsp. of olive or flaxseed oil and 1/2 juice of a lemon. You also may have 4-6 oz. (measured raw) of lean chicken, fish or beef added to the salad.
Day 2-3- FRUIT, FRUIT, FRUIT!!
You may have 1 serving of fruit (about 100 calories) every 2 hours- 8AM, 10AM, 12PM, 2PM, and 4PM. (A serving is roughly 1 medium banana, or 2 small apples, 2 small grapefruits, etc). At 6PM, you may have a large raw salad, like on Day 1, however no meat! Instead, you add 5 Tbsp. of protein powder to 12 oz. of water and drink slowly.
That's it!
ReplyOkay i read on the website that excersing may make you lose less fat..so its really up to you

I did the Jay Robb 3 day fruit flush/detox diet. I did it back to back for 2 months and lost 30 lbs! I have been able to keep it off by just making better choices. Of course I cheat, but have not varied more than 3 lbs either way. After the first couple days I really didn't even crave anything! Good luck to everyone, this WILL work. And keep in mind you can do anything for 3 days!!!!! Even NO coffee!
ReplyHave you ever considered using a far infrared sauna for detox?
ReplyI believe Diet-Blog has been there, done that :-)

I found it when I was looking into buying a sauna. Call me a dinosaur, but I'm buying the old-fashioned, original, been here for thousands of years, Finish kind.
Hey,
I am currently doing the sacred heart diet. I am in the 3rd day and after the first day lost 3lbs - which is not unusual according to the diet. Hopefully will loose between 10-17lbs in the 7 days of the diet. Didn't weigh myself yesterday but will tonight and will should have lost between 5-7lbs by day 3. Its not very hard at all I havent been hungry so far its the easiest diet ever and my trousers are looser too... fingers cross I loose over 10lbs!!
Lu
ps im 5ft 4" weigh 126lbs and am a UK size 8-10 i think this is american size 4-6.
ReplyLu - How much weight did you loose on the Sacred Heart Diet? I hope the results were as expected (10-17 pounds)? I'm on this diet with my wife and on the 2nd day. No loss on the 1st day :-(. Any words of advice?
ReplyI'm currently on Day 3 of the Fruit Flush plan. It has been very easy so far, but I have cheated in a number of ways. First, I have maintained my coffee consumption on all three days, but have limited myself to two cups (I normally have 4 or even 6). Also, I have been drinking diet soda, which is obviously not good for the detox component of the flush, but I'm doing this for weight loss above anything else. I had two extra servings of fruit on Day 2 because I have continued to exercise (somewhat strenuously) while on the plan, though that is not reccommended by the book. Despite these many varied deviations I have lost 5.2 pounds so far (I started at 147.4, and don't really have that much to lose) which I consider to be a great success. I know that most of that is just extra water, but so is the weight you lose at the beginning of any new plan. However, carbohydrate actually causes the body to hold more water, and there is s huge amount of sugar in fruit, so I would expect that at least some of that weight is actual fat (I hope it is). I plan to repeat this as suggested in the book (3 days on, 4 days off), and use the Slim 4 Life plan on my days off. I used Slim 4 Life starting in January, and lost a lot of weight quickly, then less, then I suddenly gained 10 pounds without deviating from the diet. I thought it was a fluke, but the weight hadn't dropped off again after a week, and I decided to shake up my diet by adding in the Fruit Flush. So I'm half way back to where I was before the sudden gain. I'll be elated if I can get back to my lowest weight by the end of the second fruit flush cycle. Well, wish me luck!
ReplyI too lost the magazine with the fat flush diet....I lost 13lbs and then went the the weight watchers diet...gained 6 but have done great until the last month...help
ReplyJoane: someone was kind enough to detail the fruit flush extensively on one of the first few pages of this topic. Search through and you will track it down, or just go to jayrobb.com and down load it for five dollars.
I'm really excited because Jay Robb released a new e-book just yesterday. It's a lot like the fruit flush, but you eat more fruit and you can exercise. I think the plan is 14 days long, and you can download it from his website.
I extended the fruit flush by a day and lost a total of 7.4 pounds in four days on the plan; I wear a size 10, and I'm not huge so this seems like a lot of weight to me. I know you are only supposed to do it for three days but I completely bastardized the plan from the beginning (keeping coffee and diet sodas), so I figured I might as well get an extra day out of it. I acutally ate at a restaurant on the last night and had a salad with roasted eggplant and roasted red peppers (not raw, so off the plan) which was quite salty, so I'm sure my weight loss would have been even greater without the salt.
Before everyone starts railing on me about water weight, let me remind everyone that water takes up space, so even if it is only water weight, my clothes are quite loose now, so I don't much care. I think it will be great if half of this weight stays off after I resume normal healthy eating. I'll probably try the new Fruit Diet and see how that goes.
ReplyHi,
Need a Fruit flush buddy. Starting Sunday 1 April.
cheers.
Replyi need a copy of the 3 dayfruit flush diet i lost my copy when we moved
ReplyIs there really any benefit to using 1 tbs. of flaxseed (ground) each morning and night?
Replyhey could anyone maybe give me some details on what the 3 day fruit flush diet consists of?? I am interested in doing it but cannot find the book at any bookstore. I am tight on cash and was hoping someone might be able to give me a brief overview. Thanks! My email address is ashleynicole74@hotmail.com
Replyoh also can you exercise while doing the three days or no??
ReplyI am starting the 3 day fruit flush Monday 04/09/07. I have recently lost 133 lbs since the birth of my triplets. I have kept that weight off for 1.5 years with exception of 17 lbs I regained when I had to change meds, and had some stress. I am hoping to get the jumpstart I need to get the 17 (hopefully 20) lbs off again and keep it that way. I worked too hard to lose it. Hoping the Jay Robb chocolate whey stuff is good. My husband is planning on starting the 3 days as well but over a weekend. Wish me luck... Will check back in. Only had one question though - I read about all these headaches people get first few days. Are you able to take advil or anything for them? I usually get bad migraines sometimes and need advil. If not I can try to live through it LOL. Let me know - thanks and GL all!!
ReplyOk my 3 days is done. My first day (monday) I started out at 142.5, woke up Tues at 139.5. WOke up Wed at 138.5 and ended up this morning at 137.5. So 5 lbs. NOT bad! My lowest is 122.5 when I lost that 133 lbs so I still got a little to do but hoping this gave me the jumpstart for Weight Watchers again. I been good today counting points again so keeping fingers crossed.
THe first day of shakes I was SOOOOOO full I could barely eat the salad let alone hte chicken but I did. The salad dressing combo was YUCK in my opinion. BLAH. THat I struggled with a bit. I could never eat 3-6 full cups cause I was so full which was weird. The Jay Robb CHoc powder was only ok. Tasted like watered down choc milk - like WAYYY watered down. But It was fine.
Days 2 and 3 were way easy with the fruit. SO that wasnt a problem at all. I always usually have headaches so they werent any worse then normal. I slept great the first night (i have insomnia) I still had to take my unisom though. THe past 2 nights SUCKED. I took unisom but was awake the whole night. Tossing and turning. PRAYING i get some sleep tongiht. I will also be napping with my kids today from 130-415 as usual but I have to work a few hours tongiht (not overngihts this time). So i just really pray I can get some sleep as the next two nights I DO work overnight. SO this is my last night of overnight sleep until Sunday.
My husband going to start the 3 day on Sunday. I want to do it again soemtime not sure when though. It wasnt hard but like last night we went to my parents for supper and they had my favorite so that was sad but I did take leftovers for today. I wish I could afford to try it again in 2 weeks, but maybe next month. Hopefully by then I might be 8 lbs less then the 137.5. Going to make it a good effort anyway.
So there is my LONG update.
ReplyCan anyone share the details about the 14 day diet?
ReplyI just discovered the 3 day fruit diet while researching Jorge Cruise's 3 hour diet. Can someone give me the details on this? Also, I am nursing my 6 month old. Is it okay for nursing Moms? I have 10 lbs. to go to get back into my pre-baby jeans.
ReplyHi! I have been considering the fruit flush diet. Are any of you over 50? I have had to diet since I was 13 and I have never let my weight get as high as it is now although I am only about 124 lbs and I look great at 110, but I am almost in a freefall right now - none of the thing I have done to stay thin over the years seems to be working now. I run and do pilates, yoga, aerobics, yard work, etc. at least 5 days a week. I too am not a fruit fan - I tried that pineapple diet a couple of years ago that a friend lost 25 lbs on - I gained weight. So it kind of scares me. The only thing that usually comes close to working for me is low carb, that stops working after a few months. I refuse to give up!
ReplyHi, I did Fruit Flush since November 2006 and quit on January 2007, Im doing again the fruit flush today, and what I do is, 3 day fruit flush an fat burning diet the rest of the week, that way I notice I lose like avarage 2 lbs per week, and I could eat whaever on saturdays night, I want a buddy to share the diet and follow and share recepies, and ideas, I lose like 15 lbs last time and I felt great, I really try many other diets and this one is the only one that give me cheat time and detox time and actually make me feel healthy, If you have the books and you are following the diet let me know to motivate each other and give us advice If necesary. Good luck and good day!
ReplyI would definitely NOT do this diet if you are nursing. I don't think it would be anywhere near the amount of calories you are supposed to take in.
ReplyI just finished up the Fruit Flush Diet yesterday. It was pretty tough, but I didn't cheat at all. I lost a total of 8 or 9 lbs, but I don't feel that great. I thought it was supposed to make you feel really good because of being detoxed. I just feel very tired and shaky from lack of food. I followed it exactly, so I'm not sure what I did wrong. From this point on, I'm just going to try to eat smaller portions of more sensible food. I hope to keep this weight off and hopefully lose some more.
ReplyHi I have tried the 3 day diet 3 times. Last year I lost 25 pounds. This year I am trying it again. I am on day one and of course I am starving but it is all worth me looking great on my trip to Mexico next week. I suggest everyone try it at least once! The first day I lost 4 pounds and then 3 each day thereafter. It was great!
Replythis is our first day on the fruit flush diet; it's so hard. By the time 6:00 came for our dinner we were savages. all we want to do is rip open the bag of fruit for tomorrow and inhale it all. is it supposed to be this hard? also, we cheated tonight. we each ate one baked dorito and 2 mini marshmellows. does anyone think this is a big deal? Should we press on or just give up now?

ReplyDieting isn't good for the body. If you want to have something work you'll have to have long term change.
Dieting is a spurt and after the spurt, you'll be back to the same old habits.
In other habit breaking programs there has been much success, decades of research results, on cessation method of forming new habits and ridding of the bad.
With the smoking habit, to gradually ween yourself of the habit, giving your body the time to adjust to not craving the chemicals has been shown to be successful. You'd ween yourself off a one pack a day habit by cutting down over time thereby having the body adjust to dependency less and less until you can fully quit. You also would slowly introduce good habits. You will not instantly go to a gym and become Jane Fonda, but instead take regular baby steps until your body has adjusted and learned. Then you eventually become a Jane Fonda.
This should be applied to dieting.
Slowly ween yourself off the bad while introducing and building the good.
Say you intake high fat foods five times a day including snacks and do not exercise.
Why not slowly cut out the fat and add a fruit or veggie in its place? If you snacked on fat three times daily, first substitute one of them with a fruit or veggie until you formed the habit, then grow that into two and so on.
Take baby exercise steps, start at three minutes and after the habit forms increase it to six and so on until it routine at the recommended amounts.
I haven't found an actually plan like this but it would be called a cessation diet plan, taking incremental steps to lower the bad habits and form the good in its place.
ReplyHow is the new 14 day fruit diet. Any one read the the book ? Look forward to comments.
ReplyI've read quite a few of the previous comments about Jay Robb's Three Day Fruit Flush -- very interesting. I've done his fruit flush four times now since I heard him speak about it June 2006 (I've always used his powder). The main benefit I have found from it is maybe something unusual. I am 54 and menopausal. When I have done Jay Robb's fruit flush it has completely stopped my hot flashes for 2 - 3 months. The first time I did it was July 1, 2006 and I had been having 10 - 20 hot flashes a day. After doing the Fruit Flush they stopped entirely until September, when I did the fluit flush again and the hot flashes stopped until December. It has worked amazingly well for me! Each time I stuck w/ the program pretty much 95%, so almost no cheating. I found that the second day was the hardest for me; I didn't have much energy. At the end of the three days I always feel quite good. I generally have a pretty good diet most of the time anyway, but I did get hungry at times during the three days. Hope this helps other women. Try it! :-)
ReplyHi,
How much whey do you guys use to make the drink each time. Today is my day 1 and I had my first drink with two tablespoon of whey powder and 300 ml water.
Many thanks for the input by Sandra. If it so much helps with hot flushes, I guess this detox would be good for women of any age as it seems to be normalising the hormones : may be an overdose of folic acid is the reason behind. Anyway, good to hear the benefits other than weight loss.
If I dont eat chicken / fish what else I can make day 1 salad with. Is tofu allowed ?
Thanks a lot.
ReplyHi All,
I just finished my last meal of day 3 on Fruit Flush. I will weigh myself tomorrow morning and let you know the results.
I have not cheated except on day 2 I had 1/2 serving of extra fruit after my salad.
Cheers.
ReplyAnd I lost 4 kg in 3 days. Thanks Jay Robb. Day 1 was the hardest, as I had a ver bland whey protein and I had to gulp down the shake. Good luck to all.b
ReplyHow much protein powder do you need to purchase? If I am going to buy it from Jay Robb's website, how much do I need to get? 12 oz. or 24 oz. etc.?
ReplyHi! I started on the 3 day fruit flush diet and currently on day 2. Day 1 was ok. But today, I've been having migraine all day long. Can I take excedrin or any kind of pain reliever? I have to say that I am just getting well from flu last week, and I am still a little bit congested so I cannot really say that my headache is because of the diet. Please, if anyone can let me know if I can take a pain reliever.
