Detox Diets Don't Work

Detox diets are popular after the holiday season. Detoxifying is a huge business - there are hundreds of books, pills, supplements, and kits that go to make up a multi-million dollar industry. The BBC News Magazine calls it all "empty promises".
A recent study by American researchers also concluded that detox diets do no more than the body's own natural system to get rid of toxins. They said most modern books and detox kits serve up "empty promises".
Maybe it's semantics - what exactly is detoxification anyway? An authentic detox is more like a stomach pump after a drug overdose. The human body has it's own mechanisms to filter out excessive toxins anyway.
Fewer headaches, for example, is probably the result of being fully hydrated due to drinking so much water and better skin may be due to eating more antioxidant-packed fruit and vegetables. The concept and principles behind a detox are good - it's all about cleaning up a junky diet. But what's the point in cleaning up a poor diet for 3 days - just to return to your previous excesses?
If in doubt, stick to one of the simplest and best detoxes - lots of water.

I'm so glad to have found this site. I found the women's world mag. about a year ago and have done this diet twice during the last year before trips to get bikini ready. It has worked both times to help trim those pesky 5 lbs. I gave my mag. to someone else to try and couldn't remember the exact fruits etc. I was happy to see that E made a great post on the first page of this blog with the requirements. It's summer and need to get rid of that pesky 5 again! (I did consume some plain coffee in the past- didn't realize that was off limits)
ReplyHi All, after reading all of the comments I am very much interested in trying this diet. Can someone please email a copy of it to me at csunlimited@hotmail.com. Thanks in advance.
ReplyI am finishing my third day on the Jay Robb Fruit Flush, and it has been very instructive. Unlike many of the posters, I am a very seasoned, in shape, already healthy near competitive distance cyclist. My specialty is climbing hills in endurance races, the ones with names like Son of Death Ride, and Breathless Agony. My 164 lbs of muscle, on a 5' 7" frame makes me downright portly in comparison to the folks who climb 10% grades with pencil arms!
Anyway, despite a 3000-4000 calorie per day diet of sushi, Whole Foods, Clif Bars and soymilk I wanted to try a shock to my system, and to return to my marathon weight of a few years ago.
The first day, I dropped from 164 to 160.5. I have never urinated so much in my life, and cutting out all of my supplements seemed to give me a royal headache. The protein powder was not enough, and I wolfed down that evening's salad. Went to bed early, to avoid coveting the shrimp my wife was eating!
Yesterday, I loaded up on strawberries, bluberries, cherries, apples, plums, raspberries (the joys of living in San Diego in the summer!). I felt great. I weighed 162 when i woke up this morning! However, i do feel much thinner, and attribute the massive amount of water in my body to the gain. I expect my calories yesterday were 1200-1500 from fruit and a massive salad in the evening.
Today, have been a bit stricter, and feel strong enough to take a spinning class (I won't spin hard). I exercise every day, often twice a day and three days off is torture. This Saturday I am climbing with friends in the Borrego Springs desert, a tougher day in the saddle than any one day in the Tour de France. I was hoping to do it at 158, as I have a big event I am training for on Aug. 26th. It will be interesting to see what happens. I have been well neigh worthless at work. Distracted. hungry. But not grumpy! I feel awesome. I also feel thinner, despite the scale. I can not pinch that quarter inch.
BTW, I was 207 lbs five years ago, at the time of my divorce. Once my ex-wife left, and I took a sane job (much easier to feed one mouth than two mouths and one shopaholic!), took up marathon running (slowly) and have never been above 164 since. Even with my beautiful new wife's fantastic Thai food. The key is, avoid ANYTHING fried, mostly uncooked whole foods, nothing after 7 PM, and tremendous amounts of time enjoying some sport. Cycling is a great blessing, and spending whatever it takes to eat well is another. $180, every three days at Whole Foods for two of us (and my beautiful 8 month old daughter) is an extravegance, but better than the other dumb things people waste money on.
Rock on everyone, and thanks for the info!
ReplySome follow up. it feels GREAT to eat some salt! Went to bed fragged last night, the last night of the 3 day fruit flush. VERY foolishly, i went to my local LA Fitness to spin. Woe is me, I thought I would die one hour in to this torutre. No strength, and I was sweating pure waterin lieu of my usual salty glow. With 15 minutes left, felt like I would pass out. Went home, and was too tired to eat the required protein drink and salad, so i had 12 boiled shrimp, and a fresh mango. Went to bed at 8 PM.
Woke up this morning, voila...158! Ate cereal, soymilk, a few rice crackers (ahhhh, salty!), a couple of raw almonds (ahhh, FAT!) and went to work. Have had a few Clif bars, durian and sticky rice for lunch (a sort of sweet, fatty and ugly avocado-like fruit from Thailand). Couple of apples. Rode an hour in 97 degree heat at lunch as well, which felt bloody awful.
My summary of the 3 days? I will do it again in two weeks, prior to my big event of August 26th. For athletes attempting it, this saps your strength like all get out. Tomorrow morning I will find out how badly, as I throw my trusty Colnago at Montezuma Valley Road in the Borrego Springs desert. Supposed to be 114 by 12 pm. Good thing I am so pre-hydrated!
Good luck folks. I understand it is much harder to exercise on the East Coast and in the northern MidWest. However, you have to learn to love your sport. And it needs to be a level of exercise longer than an hour, and hard enough that you occasionaly can't speak. Build to that.
One final thing. The average American diet is lethal. I lived in Thailand and Japan for some time. Very few lard asses there. While they may not have the productivity numbers we enjoy in the US, they have high quality of life. Do not EVER step foot in any fast food restaurant. The sodium, sat fat, and overall quality of the food is poor. Do not smoke cigarettes, why the hell would you? Jealous of trailor trash? Do not drink alcohol, unless you can afford '89 or '91 Chateau Margeaux! At $500 a bottle, you won't want to get soused on it.
Finally, get your butt off the couch. Watching most TV or movies is what keeps you stupid and fat. Buy a bike. Go for a walk. Do some pushups. Read Stendhal or Cerventes. Exercise your mind. In short, be me. I rule.
ReplyI would very much appreciate any and all information that I can get on the 3-day fruit flush. I would love to try it. Thanks-you very much. Jan
ReplyWould someone please send me a info about the 3-day fruit flush that was in the first magazine,I need to lose 100 lbs.Thank you.
ReplyI have read five pages of this blog going back to January 2006. Very inspiring stories. Many people have asked about where to find the protein (because Jay Robb's was expensive.) Just google "Jay+Robb+Protien" and you will be unindated with information about "discounts" on his product, and a list of sites with comparable products at a lesser price.
ReplyHello Everyone,
Well I stopped by grocery store yesterday and bought the Jay Robb's whey protein and the fruit flush book was free w/ purchase. Would someone or anyone share what type of salads they made while on diet? Thanks

Hi Everyone,
If you would like some information about the fruit flush 3 day detox program, then email me. I have a copy of the book that you can only get through his website. I bought it for 5 bucks but I do not mind sharing with everyone. Have a great day and good luck! I have just started the program today and I will let you know how it goes. I am doing the program to help me restart another program that I am on. I went on vacation to Paris for a week and definitely need a detox before I lose any other further weight.
Good luck!

After reading everyone's post - I have deceided to go ahead and give the 3 day Fruit Flush Diet a try.
Day 1: Start weight 148.5 lbs. Didn't feel hungry or deprived at all - did get sick of drinking protein shakes and by 3pm I was dying for something crispy to chew on. Sorry, had to cheat a little in the morning - need my early morning diet coke - I get up a 4 am - Not a good reason but oh well! Couldn't do the raw veggie salad for dinner - so I made some lightly steamed green beans and spinach instead. I love the crisp green beans - really satisfied my wanting to chew. Don't know if I jinxed myself as I don't get to weigh in till tonight at the gym. I did manage to go ride the bike for about 32 minutes on a level 5, so I kept it nice and light. I found the hardest thing to deal with on day 1 is drinking the water durning the hour in between the protein shakes. I felt pretty waterlogged at one point! Did not get the headache like many other people were talking about - thank goodness. I have really bad sinuses and to compound that with a headache - UGH!
My background - I am a 36 yr. old Female and was very active and fit until last year when I was put on tyroid suppression "therapy" to deal with an enlarged lobe. Caused me to gain 20 lbs in about 5 weeks even though I ate as little as possible. (I continued to gain a little for as long as I was on the thyroid medication.) Yes, thyroids can do that to you! Couldn't successfully work out due to a baseball size uterine fibroid causing me to have very heavy cycles 24/7 for the year. Both conditions brought on my too much estrogen. 2 surgeries later, everything healing nicely - but I have only lost about 10lbs since February. I am doing this to try and "jump" start my metabolism - get it back to the fuel burning machine it was just 1 1/2 years ago.
ReplyGood Luck Jessica!
Let us know how it's going. I myself have never tried it, but just read about it in "Beyond Fitness " magazine. So I'm curious. I did however start the www.recleanse.com detox, and I am on Day 5 now. It seems to be going well - but it's hard to tell how much it's acutally doing. This is my first experience with detox.
Good Luck,
ReplyNora
Hi to all- just finishing the 3 day fruit flush as I type...as wondering what kinds of veggies are being used in day 2 and 3 dinner menus- the protein shakes and the veggies I have had don't seem to fill me up for very long- and eating at 6pm is difficult when you're up until 1030 pm and listening to the stomach growling! (and my 4 year old daughter ia munching on things i can't have!)
Replyday 2 I had broccoli, red & green pepper, green squash, celery, a bit of onion and carrots- that and the protein shake made it until around 9 pm when i started feeling hungry and water only lasted a short while.
tonight was the shake along with a lot of spinach and red pepper...that made it until around 840 when the hunger started to grow...
has anyone eaten lettuces similar to a "normal person salad" and had a feeling of being full?
i also found that eating crushed ice on day one helps that feeling of loss from chewing during meals- after all- it is water......oh- and freezing water into a popsicle on a stick is neat too, although it requires a lot of time and patience to enjoy since it freezes very hard and cannot be chewed on very easily(but nice in front of the tv in the evening)
.....the other is to mix the shake in a blender or smoothie maker and add in two or three ice cubes with the mix and water- makes it colder and seems frothier like a shake "should be"!
the pounds lost for me on this seem to be 5 pounds- which makes me eager to see how next week's detox will fare. good luck to all the skeptics- look at it this way- it's only three days, and you could be happy with the results!
Hi...I really want to try this..can anyone please please e-mail me the details luckyfairyx@aol.com
i would REALLY appreciate it!! THANKS A MILLION!!
ReplyDay 2 is over and so far 5+ plus lost. Peeing like crazy sleeping better and for me the 1/2 avacado is the best way to go for the little fat that you are you allowed. My salad tonight had yellow pepper and red onion and radishes and cucumbers and carrots much salad food. I made my husband a big salad to go with the other food he had tonight and he ate less because he said the salad was so good.
I normally drink about 120 oz of water a day and am still drinking as much. I read all the post from back in January and they were great. I am off to YAHOO now to see if there is a fruit flush group I can join. I have no idea what to eat to break this on Wednesday. I am certain it will low carb and hopefully light and I am very happy with how I feel currently.
Good luck to you all it is off to the bathroom for me once again.
I am 5ft 10 and female weight was 155 and trying to get to 135 by my 45 birthday in 3 months and this was a jump start that I may do once a month unless the weight rushes back on the moment I eat a boiled egg :)
So at 149 ish on the first day I am more than excited :)
Watch what you eat.....

My wife & I finished the flush this week to jump-start Jay's Fat Burning Diet. She lost 5 (225->220), and I lost 8 (232->225). We had a bit of sluggishness and headaches like others have had. We also took advantage of this time to do Jay's gluten-sensitivity test as outlined in his Fat Burning Diet book. Turns out my wife is gluten-sensitive.
Anybody else have this problem....?

ReplyI am starting the 3 day detox today, I am very excitied. I've only been on it for about 3 hours, but it's approaching lunchtime and I'm not even hungry yet. Hopefully this is a good sign for the days to come. I don't have a a lot to report yet, but I'm just getting started so I wanted to share with everyone my quest. Starting weight, 150lbs.(from pregnancy) Target weight, 125 lbs. Hopefully this will jump start my weight loss plan. Good luck everyone!
ReplyI just started the detox diet and I have to tell you Jay Robbs protein powder in chocolate is GREAT! Its sweetened with Stevia so no artificial flavors, the right amount of protein since he wrote the book and he sells the product, but I have tried other shakes and its the best tasting and I bought it on ebay for less then $9.00, it retails for $20.00. I highly recomend his shakes.
ReplyMy roommate and I are very interested in doing this diet. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Can anyone email me a copy of it? I would be so grateful. pinkjellybean19@hotmail.com
ReplyI would also like to try the fruit diet. Can anyone email me a copy? Is so, thank you in advance! email to unicornsami@yahoo.com
ReplyI bought Jay Robbs book and very happy with it. I would also like to try the Fruit Flush diet. Would someone mind emailing me a copy, I would really appreciate it. Thanks for the support. Lynn

ReplyI started the Fruit Flush this morning,I weighed myself to begin with... 149 lbs which is certainly better than where I've been recently !! I'm using a Whey powder which doesn't have any additives including all the sweeteners, so I have to admit it tastes a bit yucky. I'll run out this afternoon and pick up the required veggies for the salads and some proper fruit for the next few days. As well, I promise to report back on this forum each day so that you can all follow my progress. That seems to be a statement that plenty of people make but don't do !! Anyhow, wish me luck and we'll see where this all goes.
Fingers Crossed Tightly...
ReplyHi Everyone,
Well, it's now Day 2 and I'm pleased to say that Day 1 wasn't too bad. I drank 6 oz of the protein mix every two hours and at least 12 oz of water every other hour. At 4:45pm I started getting hungry and at 6 pm, I was really happy to eat my 3 oz of fish and 6 Cups of salad. I mixed all sorts of veggies up in a bowl, drizzled on the olive oil and squeezed half a lemon into the salad. It was pretty good and very filling ( I love salad and fish) I fell asleep around 9:40 pm.
I weighed myself this morning and I'm down 2 lbs to 147 which is fine. So far I've had two oranges at 8AM and surprisingly I'm still full. Although there's no mention of drinking water every other hour as there was on day 1, I'm going to do so, mainly because it can't hurt to be hydrated and it will help keep my tummy full.
I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow...
Cheers,
ReplyJackie
Hi all!!
I weigh 120, will I lose 5 pounds doing the fruit flush?
-Confused Sarah
ReplyIt's now Day 3 and I weighed myself this morning and I'm still 147 :( Which is still 2 lbs less than where I started, so I can't really complain. It might help if I was able to have a bowel movement, but I haven't since the day before I started. Anyhow, Day 2 was alright, the fruit was so filling that I had trouble eating it all, especially the tomatoes. Still, at 5:45pm I got really hungry, so I had another glass of water before dinner. Drinking that whey mixture as part of dinner was not particularly nice, but I was certainly full afterwards. I'll finish today and report back tomorrow about the end result.
ReplyEnjoy your day !
Hurrah, I'm finished !!I weighed myself this morning and I'm 144 lbs, so in total I lost 5 lbs. The only problem is that I'm soooooo hungry and I can honestly tell you that the LAST thing I wish to eat is FRUIT !! I had alot of trouble yesterday, it wasn't so much that I wanted to eat outside the parameters of the diet, it was more that I just really didn't want to eat any more fruit and I always considered myself a fruitoholic so to speak. Anyhow, I don't know that I could do this particular flush again, but I'm pleased to have completed it and I look forward to having a decaf coffeeor decaf tea.
FYI I didn't suffer from headaches over the last three days because I weaned myself off of caffeinated beverages about 4 years ago.I don't miss the caffeine and the accompanying jitters, and when I accidently have a regular coffee now, it feels like I have to be peeled off the ceiling which is pretty unpleasant. Anyhow, good luck to anyone who starts this after me, and may it be the beginning of good things in your life.
Cheers,
ReplyJackie
I am a big fan of the fruit flush diet. I have been doing it for about three weeks and have kept off 9 pounds since I started. I continue to drink my average (pot) of coffee and have not had a problem. For those that are having a hard time are doing it wrong. For instance I work with a girl that refused to take my advice using a plain protein shake (I use a whey shake and mixed with 1 cup of skim milk, (I don't like froth, so I don't use ice) it tastes like a glass of 2% milk to me) Used Slim Fast shakes, which are loaded with sugar. Of course its not going to work.
ReplyI'm interested in trying the fruit flush,,can someone please email me the details of the detox.
Replyakhingle@sbcglobal.net Thank You!
This is for Gloria, I would like to try it, but tired of buying stuff that dont really work. I was on phentermine that worked well, but unless you got a Doctors script it cost you alot.
ReplyI would like for you to email me the diet if you dont mind or if you still have it.
Thanks, Ann
For the questions regarding shakes, go to www.mercola.com and order his Whey Better, it's wholesome and pure and good.

I am in my second day around just about to hit 2pm. I honestly thought yesterday was easier b/c those shakes made me feel so full I didn't want to eat but today I am hungry and everybody else's lunch smells so good. But I have not cheated...just looking fwd to being home away from temptation. I have also been peeing like crazy, hope that means I'm burning some fat not just losing water weight. Anyways, I feel like giving up but I'm half way there so I thought I'd write to distract myself from the idea. Geez...where is my will power...The stories on this board keep me going! I'll let you guys know my total loss on Friday.
ReplyCan someone please email me the fruit amounts for the flush. I lost my book and have since changed computers so don't have the download. Thanks
ReplyI am a 39 yo female and have always been in relatively good shape but the last few years have put on just a few pounds but mostly have seen a difference in my body "shape". I did the Fruit Flush detox a few months ago and lost 7 lbs but the greatest thing for me was the way my clothes fit! My jeans were no longer tight straight from the dryer!! I am getting ready to do the flush again to get a jump start on my exercise plan. I encourage anyone interested to give it a try. It's not too difficult, just try to find a good variety of fruit to spice things up a little.
ReplyDo I HAVE to drink the protien drink? Can't I just eat the protein, like egg whites? I can't handel drinking that crap! Also, what about decaffinated coffee and tea? Can I drink that?
ReplyOh, another question. Can we eat cabbage soup instead of the salad?
ReplyI wanted to start the diet the next week on Monday.I was wondering if you only lose punds, but do you notice any changes in you body? Does your clothes fit better? i excited to start the diet.
ReplyHi,

Well, my neice and I started the 3 day fruit flush yesterday. I just finished my 2nd day. Day one was a bit blah. I didnt feel bad or feel hungry until late afternoon. I was starving! haha. After dinner I was really full. Of course Im a snacker, so when I got hungry I just went to bed. It works really! Day two was not as bad. The fruit was really more than enough to fill me up. I just sorta wanted a peice of toast. haha But I made it through. Tomorrow is my last day. I didnt weigh myself before and really dont care what I lose. I'll know by the fit of my pants. However, I plan on eating a healthier diet along with portion control. That really along with exercise it the key. This is helping to flush some bloat. Then Im on my way. Not sure I'd do it every week for the 12 weeks allowed. I just needed a kick start. Now as far as my neice, she had to add a bit more meat along with a midnight snack of cherrios. Dry of course. I could really just make up a hot fudge sundae right about now. But you know what? I have way to much will power to give up now!! anyone else feel a little flush though? I've felt sorta odd today. I figured it was toxins. If thats the case, then wow!! Im full. hahahah
Replygood luck everyone!
