Detox Diets Don't Work

Detox diets are popular after the holiday season. Detoxifying is a huge business - there are hundreds of books, pills, supplements, and kits that go to make up a multi-million dollar industry. The BBC News Magazine calls it all "empty promises".

A recent study by American researchers also concluded that detox diets do no more than the body's own natural system to get rid of toxins. They said most modern books and detox kits serve up "empty promises".

Maybe it's semantics - what exactly is detoxification anyway? An authentic detox is more like a stomach pump after a drug overdose. The human body has it's own mechanisms to filter out excessive toxins anyway.

Fewer headaches, for example, is probably the result of being fully hydrated due to drinking so much water and better skin may be due to eating more antioxidant-packed fruit and vegetables.
The concept and principles behind a detox are good - it's all about cleaning up a junky diet. But what's the point in cleaning up a poor diet for 3 days - just to return to your previous excesses?

If in doubt, stick to one of the simplest and best detoxes - lots of water.

HI EVERYONE, THE BEST PROTEIN POWDER THAT DOESN'T HAVE AN AFTER TASTE IS "JAY ROBB PROTEIN POWDER." GO TO JAYROBB.COM YOU CAN ORDER FROM HIS WEBSITE OR THEY HAVE A PHONE NUMBER THAT YOU CAN CALL AND THEY WILL TELL YOU WHERE YOU CAN PURCHASE IT FROM.

I TRIED IT ONLY DID ONE DAY AND I GOT ON THE SCALE AND LOST 4LBS. I QUIT BECAUSE MY FAMILY WANTED TO GO TO SIX FLAGS THAT WEEKEND. BUT I AM BACK ON DAY ONE TODAY, I WANT TO EXERCISE SO BAD, BUT JAY ROBB SAID IF YOU DID YOU WOULD NOT LOOSE AS MUCH. SO I AM SITTING HERE LOOKING AT MY RICHARD SIMMONS DISCO SWEAT DVD. LOL

WELL I'LL LET EVERYONE KNOW HOW MUCH I LOOSE WHEN MY THREE DAYS ARE OVER. IT WORKS! :)IF IT WASN'T FOR JAY ROBB PROTEIN POWDER I WOULD NOT BE DOING IT. IT TASTE GREAT AND IF YOU GO TO HIS WEBSITE HE HAS A WATERMELON FLAVOR, PINA COLOADA, AND MANY OTHER PRODUCTS.

TAKE CARE :)

I FINISHED THE THREE DAY PLAN. I HAVE LOST 6.5 LBS. I STARTED AT 260LBS. I NOTICED THAT MY STOMACH IS MUCH LESS FAT. I MADE IT THROUGH THE 3 DIET. BUT I HAVE STARTED ON THE RICE DIET.

I THINK I WILL BE STAYING ON THIS DIET. I'VE ORDERED THE BOOK AND LOOK FORWARD TO THIS DIET. I'VE NOTICED THAT WHEN I DON'T EAT AFTER 7 PM, I GET MORE RESULTS.

JUST WANTED TO SHARE MY THREE DAY OUT COME ON THE FRUIT FLUSH. I'M ON MY WAY NOW. AND I FEEL GREAT. I CAN'T DO THE FRUIT FLUSH ANYMORE, MY HEAD HURTED SO BAD ON THE FIRST AND SECOND DAY. I THINK THAT THERE'S A DIET OUT THERE FOR EACH OF US. WE HAVE TO FIND WHAT WORKS FOR US. AND BY ALL MEANS, PEOPLE THE KEY TO ANY DIET IS TO EXERCISE, THAT'S IT IN A NUT SHELL.

HAPPY DIETING. :)

i dont understand why starvation mode is so terrible? i used to weigh 190 pounds, gained from pregnancy (i'm 5'5") and i lost over 70 pounds by eating less than 800 calories a day plus walking as exercise. of course there are some days i eat more, but this works for me! i have been maintaining my size 2-4 at 112-116lbs for 6 months now.

Where to start on why starvation is a bad thing...

While our bodies are wonderful creations, adept from years of evolution at surviving famine, perhaps it isn't a healthy thing to falsly create a famine and think we're doing right by ourselves and our health.

Our bodies love to hold on to our fat stores. When our body believes food is scarce because we give it too few calories, it begins to break down muscle, which is metabolicly active (meaning it uses energy from food to maintain itself), to provide the body with energy and decrease our metablic rate. The less lean muscle mass you have, the weaker you become, the less energy you have and the less you can eat without gaining fat mass. One thing that is kind of shocking is a person who starves their way out of being overweight, can actually still be overfat (a high body fat percentage) - and have even greater health problems than before they started the whole process of weight loss.

On a 800 or less calorie a day diet, you risk getting far fewer nutrients than you should. This will make you sick. Extreme examples of the development of nutrient-deficency related illnesses are scurvy, goiter, rickets, anaemia and greater suseptibility to infections. Yes, you can take a supplement and stave off serious illness but absorption from supplementation is low and, while your gums may not start bleeding or your legs bow out, you'll be far from well.

With eating far too few calories a day, you're also putting a huge strain on your organs, like your heart. There is also a possibility of damaging your endocrine system (your blood glucose levels can't be good).

Malnutrition is a significant problem that our world faces and it is tragic when people, because of war, famine and poverty, can not feed themselves or their families. To do it intentionally to yourself when there are far better ways to loose fat mass, is counter productive to good health and shows a lack of understanding about maintaining your health.

The good news is that most of the damage that you've done to yourself is reversable with weight training to build muscle and increasing your food intake and improving the quality of food that you eat so you are eating to meet your nutritional requirements. Depending on your relationship with your body, food and eating, you may also require counselling (I'm not being snide here - counselling isn't an insult and I would guess that a lot of folks could really benefit from this). I would suggest making an appointment with your GP to discuss these issues.

Even if you've maintained your loss for six months, it's doubtful you'll be able to maintain it throughout your life without seriously jeapordizing your health.

It seems like the fruit flush has lost momentum on posting information/results. My husband and I have just started today. Will keep you posted.

Hi, I am getting ready to start the 3-day fruit flush, does anyone know if you can eat steamed vegetables in the 6pm salad, or do they have to be raw? Thanks.

Reply
Cindy

Reading the book that was e-mailed to me and the article in the First magazine says "Raw Vegetables".

We are on our second day and I weighed in this morning and I must have been retaining water because the scale was down 4 pounds for me and 3 pounds for my husband. Today is much easier I am enjoying the fruit. My husband and I have both had minor headaches last night but feel fine today. Will let you know what happens tomorrow.

Well I have downloaded my e-book...I have read it word for word...I have purchased my egg-white protein...lol i am ready....however what is really keeping me from starting is the "flush"-ing out part.

What will that be like? I mean, will i need to stay close to the bathroom for 3 days? lol I have stomach issues already, I don't want to make them worse...however I have heard that it actually helps stomach issues such as mine...(IBS with D) ...i am worried about cramping and sudden need to go to the restroom in the middle of a store or something!

any comments on this will be helpful!

=)

Start of day 3 I am down 5 pounds and my husband is down 8 pounds. Feel much more energized and alert today.

Andrea, I have not experienced the flushing part as you may be thinking. Just using the bathroom alot as expected with the amount of water intake, no sudden cramps or urgency have been experienced by either of us. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

See you tomorrow!

Cindy, May I ask if you and your husband used Jay Robb's shake or another whey protein shake? I only lost about 3 pounds total using GNC's whey protein powder, and now I'm contemplating trying the diet again using the recommended brand.

We are done! Not bad, feel really good and alert this morning. I am down a total of 7 pounds and my husband 8.5 pounds. We will probably do this again next week starting Monday.

Mimi, yes we did use Jay Robbs Vanilla shake and it was very gooooood!

Andrea, I need to mention that yesterday afternoon I did feel an urgency to use the restroom but nothing that was uncomfortable. This did not happen to my ever regular husband.

Good luck and keep me posted.

My husband and I will continue on a modified diet and will let you know how the weight stays off.

Take care to all!

I've too tried the Jay Robb fruit flush about a month ago after reading the magazine. I bought the book and the strawberry shake and it was delivered quickly. I lost 6 pounds and had kept it off and had lost another 4 pounds when I did the flush the following week. Yes, you will gain the weight back if you go back to your old habits. Your old habits are keeping your weight on. I was so thrilled with the results that I had gotten lazy and gained the weight back but i didn't gain more than what I had lost. I bought Jay's protein shake because I read that it was the best shake and the taste was good. I have to agree that the shakes aren't bad at all. I started the flush again, today as a matter of fact. Oh, and when I did the flush last month I did cheat and I still lost the weight. I'm trying my best to follow the steps so I can have great results. Three days out of seven aren't bad at all. I think what my problem was that i didn't take it seriously. i thought it was b.s. until after the third day. I've read all the post on this subject and I remember that I didn't drink alot of water. I am drinking water today because I want to get the max out of this the best way I can. Oh, and before I forget, after the second week I caught a cold and it was hard for me to get rid of it. I was told that on the last day of the flush to start taking my vitamins because our bodies need the other vitamins to help our bodies fight the bad germs. I think I'm going to try another flavor of Jay's shakes since I'm running out anyway. I'll report back in a few days to let you know my results...good luck to everyone who is trying the flush.

Well, excited to post here. I finished my first day and am down 4lbs from 170 to 166. Man I had the worst headache by the time I had my salad and woke up with it. It is lessend from sleep, but my neck is killing me. No it is not caffeine since I may have 2 or 3 a week. I get bad headaches when I don't eat. Lasting day 1 wasn't so bad and I got really full fast on my salad which was great with just lemon juice on it. Thank God for fruit and fruit day. I have school today and need to eat, so timing was good. Just need to pack and go. Today is a long 8hr day at school and tomorrow is just 1hr, so today is probably going to be the hardest. I will do this flush probably once a month, not everyweek since I feel that it is too hard on the body to do weekly. I will be starting a diet and exercise regime by Philip Goglio. He is a personal trainer to the stars..bla bla bla, what I like about him though is he tailors it to 3 different types of people not just one for all and how they individuals utilize foods. It is great. I just bought the book while looking for the Jay Robb book that wasn't there. So I found this one and feel it is more tailored to me. :) 12 weeks to go. Will do this flush probably in another 4 weeks. Sort of a half way pointer. Will be back tomorrow to let you know how much more is gone. Hey! After breakfast, I think my headach is going away. YEAH!!

Well Day 3 and life is good. My headach is gone but I am itching. I have done many fasts and know that this is a sign of detox. Down to 165 from 170. Fruit has made me very gassy. Anyone else have this issue? :)

Day 4 and I am done. Yeah! for me and anyone else that finishes. I am down from 170 to 163.5 for a total of 6.5 lbs. Not too shabby. I realized this moring that I forgot to eat my salad last night. Really busy with homework. I did wake up in the middle of the night itching my neck like crazy. If gets all burning feeling. That should tell you something. Well on to my Philip Goglio diet. I have 4 weeks till I move to Colorado with my Fiance. I would like to get into my low 150's high 140's by then. Wish me luck. :)
Good Luck to all

KM let us know it you were able to keep the 6.5 pounds off in the next few days.

Reply
KM

Well I am still at 163.5/164. :) I think I went up two lbs the next day and then right back down again. It is really important to keep drinking a lot of water. I notice that I loose more when I do. I have started the quickstart of the Giglio book I mentioned earlier. It is a 2-3 week deal to help me lose more weight fast before hitting the 12 week regime of training my body to eat for my metabolic style. I am excited but man do you have to drink tons of water. Just call me Mrs. Noah's

I am starting this diet on sunday. seems pretty easy. I have about 15 lbs to loose, but I am not sure if I will still loose as much weight as everyone els is talking about. Is anyone who did this diet around 135 lbs and still lost weight?

Well, I am currently on day 2 of the fruit flush. I weighed myself yesterday morning and I was 140lbs. I have decided that I am not going to weigh myself until the flush is over. I want to finish it without being discouraged if I am not loosing as quickly as I expect. Anway, yesterday I only had 4 of the recommended protein shakes. I hope that this does not affect my overall loss. Right now I am eating a peach.... I will let you know how this goes :)

Hi Amy and everyone else looking for the program. You can get the plan right at Jay's site for 5 bucks here: http://www.jayrobb.com/cat_fruitFlushDietEbook.asp another question that keeps getting asked is what PP are you using? I've been using protein powder on and off for a couple of years and must say Jay's is the ONLY one that I have ever liked plain. He ships real quick or if you try a local 'Vitamin Shoppe' you might get lucky, I convinced mine to carry it.

Good luck to you all!

Hi everyone.
I am planning on starting this 3-day Detox Jay Robb diet tomorrow to see how it works out. I know that most of this wieght loss will be water wieght and muscle loss but I'd like to cleanse my body and see how I feel doing it. I am going to try to lift wieghts and do wieght bearing exercises so I don't lose too much muscle. I will post more as the days go by. Summer is the best time to do a fruit diet! Yum!

i just started the fruit flush diet yesterday, and i have to say that i was starving by 4pm and asleep for the night by 8pm. according to the book this is normal. today its all fruit, which is good for me because i love fruit. what i miss the most is a cheeseburger. i think not only will this help me to lose a few pounds, but it has also strengthened my willpower. last night before bed my husband came to bed with a bag of powdered donuts ( my favorite ) and i was able to say no. thats a big improvement. we'll see

Hey, I am a personal trainer and have heard all about this fruit flush. I am not a nutritionist and could not recommened it .....but, I was very curious by it's success and theory. I started it today. I don't have much to lose (5lbs maybe). I just want to see how this works and how you feel after. It makes sense to me. Your body has a set point weight that it likes to be. This is the weight that no matter if you gain or loose it likes a certain number. It can be broken though and I think this flush might do it. Plus, help with the sugar cravings. I still work out an hour a day, so I can't wait to see if it affects me in any way.
Let ya know!
