Detox Diets Don't Work

Detox diets are popular after the holiday season. Detoxifying is a huge business - there are hundreds of books, pills, supplements, and kits that go to make up a multi-million dollar industry. The BBC News Magazine calls it all "empty promises".

A recent study by American researchers also concluded that detox diets do no more than the body's own natural system to get rid of toxins. They said most modern books and detox kits serve up "empty promises".

Maybe it's semantics - what exactly is detoxification anyway? An authentic detox is more like a stomach pump after a drug overdose. The human body has it's own mechanisms to filter out excessive toxins anyway.

Fewer headaches, for example, is probably the result of being fully hydrated due to drinking so much water and better skin may be due to eating more antioxidant-packed fruit and vegetables.
The concept and principles behind a detox are good - it's all about cleaning up a junky diet. But what's the point in cleaning up a poor diet for 3 days - just to return to your previous excesses?

If in doubt, stick to one of the simplest and best detoxes - lots of water.

I completed Day 1 yesterday and weighed 4 pounds less this morning than yesterday morning. On Day 1, I spend quite a bit of time visiting the ladies' room, so I have no doubt I drank enough water. I found Jay's shake powder at Whole Foods (strawberry was pretty good). I bought small bottles of water and made all of the shakes I needed for the day first thing in the morning. I just packed them in a small cooler and I was all set for work. I'm a little hungry this morning (have had 2 fruit servings so far), but feel fine otherwise.

I'll be curious to see if there are any results tomorrow morning.

Fruit Flush: Just an update from yesterday's email. I made it until dinner last night before I stopped following the plan. I was so hungry, I ended up eating a sandwich for dinner. When I stepped on the scale this morning, I was down a total of 5 pounds (lost 1 more pound yesterday). Although I didn't complete the flush, I am going to try again next week to do all 3 days. I do feel really good this morning (just finished a bowl of oatmeal and some fruit). I no longer feel bloated and I have more energy than I did Tuesday morning when I started.

E - thanks for the nice list ;).. that sounds like a lot of fruit for the 2 days?? isn't it 1serving fruit per 2 hrs? Also, what kind of vegs can we use for the raw salad?.. thanks again :)

Hello everyone,

Would someone be so kind as to give me the receipe for the 3-day diet plan published in First magazine. Something about drinking a protein shake every two hours starting at 8 a.m. ending at 4 p.m. then vegetables for dinner. Three days on and four days off.

I appreciate it very much.

day 1 drink a protein shake(mix 1 scoop whey powder, soy powder or egg-white powder w/8 oz water) every 2 hours throughout the day. Then eat 6-cup raw-veggie salad w/6 oz. lean protein (chicken, turkey, beef or fish) 1/2 avocado (or 2Tbs. olive oil and the juice of 1/2 lemon or 1/2 lime.
Good Luck I am towards the end of day 1 can't wait to eat tonight.

For the 3 day diet from First Magazine, what is the whole 3 day schedule? Is it something like on the 1st day only drink the whey shake every 2 hours and nothing to eat? What is the 2nd and 3rd day?

Hi
I want to try the 3-day Fruit Flush but I'm having problems finding the right protein powder. All the ones at the stores near where I live have in sucralose which First Magazine advises to avoid. The brand that's most abundant here is Specialized Protein for Fitness but it also has sucralose. Has everyone who's tried the Fruit Flush stuck to the recommended ingredients or have you strayed??

I found this 3 Day Fruit Flush Detox diet in a magazine that was lying around in a waiting room. I thought I'd give it a try.
-----
I'm a 40 year old guy, 208 lbs, 6'2". I exercize 3-4 times a week for an hour (cycling). My "normal" weight is 189, but I've gone up since September. I tried increasing my activity, and eating proper portions, but I was just sitting at 208 (but getting good cardio workouts, anyway).
------
So after day 3, here is the report: 10 lbs lost, no hunger (at all), and a slimmer belly.
------
If I had to give this diet a new name it would be the "Dehydrate you without feeling dehydrated or hungry" diet. There is (of course) no way that any more than 1 pound of this weigh loss is fat loss. And even the 1 pound fat loss estimate is based on the reduced calories of day 2 & 3, combined with the exercize.
------
Still, I'm happy because it made me fell better. Will it really kick-start something more? We'll see. It did let me fit into my pants better.

Oh, and the only variations of the plan by me were:

Day 1, larger salad for the 6pm feeding (mostly lettuce, but I was in a restaurant, so it was the best I could do).

Day 2, I drank 18 oz of water during a 1:30 minute bike ride (it was 27 degrees out, I'm not doing that dehydrated!)

Reply
Eric

And some more info. After day 1 my breath smelled awful. Late Day 1 & most of the time day 2 & 3 I had a dry mouth (not to be confused with feeling hunger OR thirsty).

By the end of day 1, I was urinating a lot, pretty clear.

By day 3, the urine was getting darker, and there wasn't a lot of it (because by then you're getting dehydrated).

Hi from New Zealand.... I picked up an American Woman's magazine from the local dairy and read with interest the Protein Flush Diet.. today I completed my first day... very easy going as it was quite easy to drink the water. (It is Summer here so very warm). Tomorrow is the beginning of the fruit days... I am looking forward to that as we have ample fresh fruit around. I will weigh myself in the morning and see if any loss has been made... really haven't felt any different. I shall keep my fingers crossed.

Good luck to all who are taking part.

Okay... I am a skeptic no longer...day two down and so far 3 1/2 kilograms lost...day three tomorrow. I wonder if I should share this with my friends.. or just let them wonder =)

I read the article and did not see exactly what vegetables are allowed for the salad? Also, the protein shakes can they be found at a local store or only online? I'm ready to give this diet a try, got 20lbs to loose ;)

Can anyone tell me which Whey Protein shakes they have used, where they bought it and the name? I know I saw a post that someone got theirs at Wal-Mart for about $11... I am wanting to start the diet right away and am looking to get it at a local store.

Also if you could give me your opinion on which ones taste the best... 3 whole days of tasting something that makes you gag is not a great experience.

Thanks

My best friend and I are going to try this diet. We each only have about 8lbs to lose, to hit our summer goals. We just need something to give us a jump start, since we are both stuck at our current weight.

Thanks for all of the information. If anyone has any additional tips or help on how to do the diet, I would appreciate the information. fitness252002@yahoo.com I haven't been able to find the magazine you all have talked about on here. So we will just be following the earlier postings of how to do the diet. I hope this works!

I have a good protein powder, but I will have to buy some fruit and vegetables.
thanks for the help!

My daughter and her husband both went on a detox diet in 04, within two months the husband developed what later tuned out to be Graves Disease and has been on a contoling drug ever since.
my daughter at the same time develored ever wosening cystitus took loads of antibiotics, had her small intestine operated on to remove polyps, and tried many other cures, diets etc, recomended by doctors. four months back she had her gall bladder removed, this was supposed to cure constant nausea. She is still the same and we are worried that she is becoming depressed and not improving. she is at present on an elemintion diet recommended by a doctor.
STAY AWAY FROM DETOX DIETS.

rodking - was it this particular diet? or something extreme? I don't see how eating fruit and salad, with maybe the exception of the first protein filled day, would be so detrimental. There are lots of detox diets out there which rely on 'other' substances..?

I am trying the detox diet and using some protien shake that I found at Wal-Mart. My gosh these things taste awful.. Is there a better shake out there that is better tasting?

Hi everyone! Reading all these success stories about the 3 day flush is encouraging me to complete it. I'm on day two. I'm someone who lives my life with a beverage in my hand most of the day, usually coffee! I couldn't imagine giving up all beverages and caffeine for 3 days; I think if I had the expectation to be that strict about this diet, I would have never embarked on it. So, I've modified the diet in such a way that I am confident I'll get the nutritional and detoxing effects from the fruits and veggies and the weight loss. I'm allowing myself 1 and 1/2 Vivarin tablets a day (the caffeine equivalent of about 2 cups of coffee), this to keep the caffeine detox on a manageable scale. That's because I have been a very heavy coffee drinker for years. I've heard that there are a number of pesticides and chemicals in coffee, so the Vivarin tablet of caffeine will elimate these while providing me a "step down" off the larger amounts of caffeine I've been used to. Remember, Jay Robb said to continue to take your medications! Also I am allowing myself to have an occasional cup of ginger tea! Yes, ginger is "medicinal" but the only difference I can imagine it making is possibly allowing my digestive system to better manage the changes it is going through moving from lots of meats to mainly fruits and vegetables! For those of you who possibly wouldn't start such a strict regimen, I wanted to suggest a way to do this which I feel provides most of the benefits. The last day of the 3 day program, tomorrow, I will proudly wean myself down to only 1 Vivarin! PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION!

If someone could please tell me what to do on days 2-3 on the plan that was in first magazine I would appreciate it. I had the article copied and it cut off some of the details and it doesnt seem to clear. Do we drink the shake on days 2-3 and do we also eat a salad?
Thanks

I have a question about the fruit flush, if anyone can help?
At 6pm when you eat the veggie salad with olive oil, are you allowed vinegar?

Hakamom

Nope, no vinegar

I just downloaded the book, and am glad I did. It answered alot of the questions. I didn't have the 'proper' protein mix... but went ahead anyways, and lost 6 pounds in the 3 days.... now to keep it off, and chage my eating habbits. I found the 3 day flush, easy enough to do... I'll definately repeat again in a few days...

GOOD LUCK to everyone.... and remember WATER & it's only 3 days.....

Hi,
Has anyone successfully lost by following this diet for more than the 1 week? Meaning, has anyone routinely kept on this '3 day on the diet/4 days off' cycle? I am beginning this diet on Monday. I have approx 15 lbs to lose.
thanks in advance!

I have currently tried the Sacred Heart Diet and lost 10lbs. but the diet was very difficult... I exercise for three hours a day 5 - 6 days a week. I'm curious about this Fruit Flush diet and was wondering if anyone had a copy of it... I'm very interested in this diet. If so please send it to botamijackson@aol.com

I'm on day 2 of Jay Robb's Fruit Flush plan, first week. I typically eat organic and very healthy all the time and exercise consistently, but this past week I was celebrating my birthday and ate several things I normally don't (i.e. BBQ ribs, bread pudding, cake, and cookies), so I wanted to try this 3 day detox to help me get my sugar cravings under control and get back into eating healthy. It's just a jumpstart. I lost 16 lbs from December to January this year by doing a 5 day juice cleanse, eating in moderation, and exercising. I've kept it off and doing this plan will help keep me going. Day 1 was tough on me b/c I'm not a protein shake fan, but I did it. I was disciplined. I think I'll order Jay Robb's protein powders. The one I got at an organic market isn't the best tasting thing. I LOVE fruit so today has been okay. I didn't order the e-book, I got the info on the detox from Women's World, so I didn't know not push myself to exercise. I went to a step class last night and only lasted 45 mins.(it's a 60 min. class). I plan on continuing the exercise if I feel up to it. I've been hungry but haven't really had any headaches. I was also tired last night. I'll report on what I lose after I'm done. Tomorrow is the last day and I'll weigh myself the next morning.

Hi everyone!

Hi! I'm beginning my 3rd day... and oh man, the headaches the first 2 days!! I believe its from the 'no coffee'. This is what I miss the most!
I too have been tired and sleeping more. First night was the most significant. I've not noticed too much as far as weight loss, my clothes are a bit looser, but not as much as I thoughy, which has me bummed a bit. I have been sticking to the diet and drinking a gallon of water a day! (1st day was the most, I was so thirsty).
As far as the 'flush'- it seems that part of me has 'shut down' (in need of fiber). Which seems odd to me? My nightime salads are a wide variety of veggies and lettuce/bokchoy. I have not bought the download of this diet.. can anyone advise if it recommends or says anything about this problem?

thanks much,
Julie

Just started the 3 day fruit/protein diet...
The protein drinks are kind of unpleasent,at least
the one I bought is not tasty at all but I think I
am getting used to them as the day goes on.
I am really looking forward to the salad tonight!

Anyone else still on this diet?

I started today also but didn't know I had to drink all that water and didn't get that done today. I am now drinking some water at 10:30 pm, so I guess I started off wrong but I am going ahead and moving onto the 2nd day with fruit. I cut it all up and am ready to eat it tomorrow. I did this diet 3 months ago (again didn't know about the water until I got onto this site) and lost 6 lbs and never got hungry. I'll report my losses too. Let's all keep checking on each other, report your losses!!!

I've completed one rotation of the fruit flush plan and lost 6lbs after being stalled in a plateau for 5-weeks on a low fat/low carb diet. I've already lost 75lbs on my own in the last year, so I'm no stranger to diets. It's a solid plan that will give you a good kick start into healthier eating. Jay Robb's book is helpful for the "days after" the fruit flush to explain what to do to keep the weight off and continue to lose. I plan on doing 1 fruit flush a week to try and get the remainder of the 25lbs off I have remaining to lose. Hungry people on the program should make sure they're drinking their water (.5 oz per pound of body weight) is the general rule. Good luck all!

I've just finished round 1 (lol) im in day 4 and quite
happy that I have managed to make it through the 3 days
the worst was the protein drink...I don't think I can
drink that again the taste is horrible. Anyone have
one that is good tasting? I think I may have to mix
in a banana I just can't drink it without gaging
(any suggestions?) Day 2 & 3 was fine...I love fruit.
In total I lost 4 lbs...unbelieveable really! Let's
see how round 2 goes next week!
Keep up all the good work !! and keep reporting!!

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could email me the directions for the fruit detox diet. I was on it and I have lost my magazine. I remembered you drink whey protein or soy protein shakes every 2 hours then for dinner eat a salad with a lot of "good protein" (chicken, turkey, tuna, etc...). If someone one could please post the directions or email me at humn_byrd@yahoo.com, I would greatly appreciate the hospitality. The summer is coming and I am trying to shed a few pounds.

Thanks

Whew! I can't believe I actually made it through the 3 days! I had the most difficulty on day 1. I was fine up until around 1:30, when I started feeling lightheaded so I went ahead and had my 2:00 shake. I didn't feel much better, so I took a nap. When I awoke at 5:00, I felt wonderful!! Had my salad w/ chicken at 6:00, and felt content for the night.
The 2nd day was the easiest..I actually had to force myself to eat all that fruit! Then by 6:00, I contempted skipping the salad/shake, but again forced it. Yesterday, day 3, I felt weak and run down, but stuck with it.
I was absolutely faithful, and I have only lost 3 pounds! Could it be my metabolism is outta whack or my body WANTS to stay at 130 (was stuck for a long time!)Any advice/insight? I plan on sticking to the diet today, hopeing to lose another pound.

The closer you are to a healthy weight, the less you will loose is the general rule Mimi. Also, did you make sure that you buy Whey powder that does not have anything artifical in it? Those who mentioned powder at Walmart etc. are not getting the right stuff. You want stuff that is sweetened with Stevia (not Splenda or aspratame) and that has no chemical additives (hense the detox portion of the plan).

Reply
Andrea

Also - you can buy the whole plan on Jay Robb's website at www.jayrobb.com. It's $5 for a 48 page PDF and it's totally worth it. Then there is no confusion on how it works.

Liv

On your 'off' days...did anyone gain back the
weight? I noticed that 2 lbs did come back but now
I've lost 2 again from the first day.

Andrea, Thanks for your input!!! I purchased Nitro-Tech whey-protein powder from GNC. The guy there knew about the diet, and said other people were buying it because it only had 2 grams of sugar per serving and it was the best tasting (it is yummy). It also has only 20 grams of protein per serving (I make it up by using more powder).
Unfornutely, I bought 2 lbs of it. I plan on pressing ahead even though it will probably take me longer...at least I know this diet does in fact work and I can stick to it. Thanks again!!!!:)
