Detox Diets Don't Work

Detox diets are popular after the holiday season. Detoxifying is a huge business - there are hundreds of books, pills, supplements, and kits that go to make up a multi-million dollar industry. The BBC News Magazine calls it all "empty promises".
A recent study by American researchers also concluded that detox diets do no more than the body's own natural system to get rid of toxins. They said most modern books and detox kits serve up "empty promises".
Maybe it's semantics - what exactly is detoxification anyway? An authentic detox is more like a stomach pump after a drug overdose. The human body has it's own mechanisms to filter out excessive toxins anyway.
Fewer headaches, for example, is probably the result of being fully hydrated due to drinking so much water and better skin may be due to eating more antioxidant-packed fruit and vegetables. The concept and principles behind a detox are good - it's all about cleaning up a junky diet. But what's the point in cleaning up a poor diet for 3 days - just to return to your previous excesses?
If in doubt, stick to one of the simplest and best detoxes - lots of water.

Jasmine,
From what i understand, you can only have the shakes and water, then whatever else it states your allowed. So, from what your saying, no coffee, tea or any other type of drink?
ReplyReading all of your stories about the Fruit Flush has really gotten me excited. My mom and I are starting our flush tomorrow. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. Im hoping that I can stick with the program. I'm very active but have had some problems with weight control ever since depression. But your stories have helped me and are very inspiring. I will keep everyone posted...Good Luck
ReplyAlso does anyone know if you can exercise during the fruit flush because the article didn't mention anything about not being able to. Thanks!
I'll quote parts of the eBook to answer your questions.
Deb, it says no coffee because it has caffeine and "the Fruit Flush is designed to help individuals break their addiction to caffeine and other drugs." Notice it doesn't say that having caffeine will stop you from losing weight on the diet.
It also says that no-calorie soda isn't allowed because it has aspartame, acesulfame-K, sucralose, artificial flavors and colors "which are potentially toxic ingredients." You can have sparkling water with lemon or lime.
As for tea, regular tea isn't allowed again because of the caffeine. Herb teas aren't allowed because "some herb teas can be aggressive cleansers of the body" and could make you cleanse too fast in combination with the diet.
Casey, exercise is allowed, but "make it light and simple. During the three days that you follow the plan, it is best to rest more which will allow your body to cleanse itself."
I know I was exhausted during day 2 and couldn't have excercised if I wanted to. I think someone else here posted a similar experience.
Also:
ReplyDo not take vitamin supplements.
No salt.
No apple cider vinegar on the salad in place of the lemon.
Do not switch the order of the foods, for example do not have the salad for lunch and then the shakes or fruit for dinner.
Drink as much water as you like. Actually, the book says to have 12 ounces of water or more one hour after each shake or fruit serving.
Mild headaches are common the first day.
Don't do it more than three days a week.
Continue to take any medications prescribed by your doctor.
I STARTED THE FRUIT FLUSH DIET TODAY WITH THE JAY ROBB WHEY PROTEIN, IT TASTE PRETTY GOOD. I WENT TO THE GYM THIS MORNING AND EXERCISED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. I CALCULATED THAT I USED 500 CALORIES DURING EXERCISE. THE PROTEIN IS ONLY 565 CAL WHICH MEANS I WILL ONLY HAVE MAYBE 250 CALORIES FOR THE DAY. I AM CURRENTLY VERY TIRED. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS OKAY. I KNOW THAT I AM PROBABLY LIVING OFF THE CALORIES FROM YESTERDAY BUT I AM NOT SURE.
ReplyElain, the Fruit Flush eBook from Jay Robb says, "If you feel weak or tired while following the Fruit Flush, then heed the signs and REST. Many individuals are exhausted because they are toxic and overstimulated from the regular use of coffee, tea, and stimulating drinks."

ReplyTHANKS FOR THE ANSWER TO MY QUESTION. I JUST HAVE IT IN MY MINE THAT IF I CONTINUE A WORKOUT I WILL LOSE MORE WEIGHT. DOES THE BOOK COMMENT ON EXERCISE AND WEIGHT LOSS
Elaine, the only reference to exercise is what I've already posted. The book's main focus is detox, or cleansing your body of toxins, which also results in weight loss.
ReplyHi Everyone! I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments. It seems like I've heard more good than bad on the fruit flush diet. My best friend started this last week and lost 5 pounds. I am going to try it this week but I'm also very nervous about not being able to stick to it! Does anyone suggest a good tasting protein drink that's not overly expensive? Also, does it say anything about not being able to take medication if you do get a headache?
ReplyHello all! Glad to see that some of your are trying the fruit flush. I followed the diet exactly. The first 2 days I had slight headaches because weening off of caffene. I lost 6 pounds in 3 days and I am thrilled. I have been trying to get rid of 4 to 6 pounds for years. I thought I ate pretty well and I do exercise. Now I feel great and I am at my perfect weight. This is a superb diet if you need to lose weight fast and want to learn a more healthful way of eating and living. By the way, Wal-Mart sells great protien powder for about $11.
Replyim want to try thr fruit flush diet but i cant find out exactly how to do what protien to use what fruits and how often how many days

Hello All:
I read the blog and would be interested in trying the Fruit Flush program that is discussed. I've tried a lot of programs and would like a boost to lose 30 lbs. I was looking for the First magazine it was listed in and couldn't find it. Please share it if you have it. Thanks pag428@yahoo.com
ReplyCONGRATS to all that have had the willpower to complete the 3-day! I say that VERY sincerely, sitting here on the morning of my third day. It is tough. But it also gives you a terrific sense of accomplishment...not to mention losing a few pounds :)
Reply(My hubby bailed out half way through day two and drove straight to the Taco Bell drive thru!! Bless his little pot belly!)
There are a few things about the First magazine version of this plan that irritated me. I feel it really left out some important things. It did not mention drinking extra water, possible headaches (which I assumed would happened, but would have been nice to *know*), to discontinue vitamins, limit exercise...etc. But the REALLY big kicker that got my attention was this...the article mentions two different types of protein deemed "tried and true" by the First staff. One was of course Jay Robb's Protein shakes. After all it's his plan. The other was Vitamin World Soy Protein Isolate. I purchase this one because it was considerably less expensive. (Actually was buy one, get one free when I got it!) I read the ingrediences when I got it and it DIRECTLY contradicted the article. The article said to avoid protein powders containing maltodextrin (sp?) and sucrulose...The Vitamin World version has BOTH! I was just a little bummed about that since I followed "instructions" to a T!
Whew...seems the lack of "real food" is making me cranky...that's all for now :) Thanks for listening!

I did a little bit of research on the internet, and decided on a 3-day vegetable juice diet. I'm on Day 2 and wondering what I was thinking. I was fine on Day 1, but today I have a headache from having no caffeine, and I'm getting completely sick of these juices. I'm actually finding them a bit nauseating now. I think my stomach has shrunk, because I don't seem to want to drink them and don't feel hungry. Would it be a huge mistake to stop after Day 2? My original plan was that if I lost a pound or two then it would spur me to go to the gym more consistently (I already eat pretty healthy).
ReplyHi! Thank you to everyone for the great info! I am very interested in the Fruit Flush detox plan for several reasons. (Intestinal issues, arthritis/inflammation that responds poorly to convenient but nutritionally lacking foods..., and kick starting my wt loss plateau would just be tofu icing on my rice cake!) I am considering downloading the $5 plan, but was trying to find a little info first (for one- if it is tons of fruit everyday - fruit every couple of hours sounds like a lot of fruit $$) Or is it just a portion of fruit that often?... And just a simple outline of what the diet consists of. I can't find the First magazine that carried that article either... Are there specific fruits that you can/can't eat? I see the notes about the salads, oil, proteins- what all do you eat and how long does the 3day detox actually have a plan to cover? I am just looking for a little more info to base my decision on.
Thank you so much for any help with my tons of questions!

ReplyI JUST FINISHED THE 3 DAY FRUIT FLUSH AND WAS PLEASED WITH THE RESULTS. THE FIRST DAY WAS THE HARDEST FOR ME SINCE I AM NOT USE TO HAVING SO MUCH PROTEIN. BY THE END OF THE THIRD DAY I FELT GREAT AND ON THE MORNING OF THE FOURTH DAY I HAD LOST 4LBS. MY ONLY PROBLEM WITH THE FRUIT FLUSH IS THE EATING WHATEVER YOU WANT FOR THE NEXT FOUR DAYS. I AM TRYING VERY VERY HARD TO STAY AWAY FROM THE JUNK FOOD. WHAT SHOULD I EAT AFTER COMING OFF THIS DIET. I AM TRYING TO KICK THE DIET SODA HABIT SINCE I FIND THAT I AM NOT CRAVING SUGAR.
ReplyElaine,
Hi!
I normally try to eat veggies and fruits every day, lean proteins and what grains I eat I try to make sure they are pretty much all whole grain. I try to drink the rec amt of water every day (water jugs - or insulated commuter mugs with ice water help me a lot) I also drink a lot of herbal teas with very little or no sugar. I have sometimes used honey or raw sugar instead of processed sugar. I don't always stick to it, but this is what I feel best eating and what I plan to go back to after the diet. (I also try to cut out as much processed foods as possible- of any type). I hope this helps- and all input on my suggestions are welcome :) I am just guessing here- ? I don't know if Jay Robb's plan suggests any different follow up meal plan/ maintainance program??
Stephanie
ReplyI read the post re the sucralose in the whey/protein ... I have a huge box of protein powder that I had planned to use with the program... just wondering if there is any detail in J.Robb's info about the sucralose's effect - I hate to go buy more protein- but then don't want to sabatoge my efforts either.... hmmmm....

ReplyHI - I AM ABOUT TO GO BACK ON THE FRUIT FLUSH TOMORROW BUT I HAD SUGAR YESTERDAY AND IT JUST STARTED ME ON A BINGE. ReplyHi!
Thanks, E for sharing your info.
I ended up downloading Jay Robb's plan & it is pretty much exact. I ended up chosing an egg white protein. I start it tomorrow. I may wish I had ordered his protein too after smelling this stuff... lol... I have some stevia I may add to it.
Too many of the whey proteins had some type of sweeteners added to them. I figure if I am going to do this- if I can possible tough it out for a day with the egg whites then I can use the rest of it mixed in juice smoothies after tommorow (my first day). I weighed yesterday, I will just use that as my "pre flush" weight... I am not chosing the best time of the month to do this- I am swimming upstream as far as retaining fluids will be concerned.... so that will be interesting to see how that goes...
Just wanted to check in and let everyone know that tomorrow is my "Day 1" I will be glad to share my experience with it if anyone is interested? I will check in tomorrow.
Also- if anyone has any questions that I can look in Jay's plan to answer I would be glad to.
Hoping you have a bounce in your step today....
Best wishes,
ReplyStephanie
Hi! I am also starting the fruit flush today. All of your comments have really been helpful, and hopefully will give me the motivation to stick to it. My best friend started last week and los 4 pounds. She also said that it was difficult, but worth it.
ReplyCan I put splenda or cinnamon on my fruit? Coffee is off limits also right?
ReplyToday is Day 1 for me...Doing good so far, but looking forward to dinner! I am leaving for a cruise on Feb 16th and looking to lose 10 pounds!
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!
ReplyHi!
Well... I have finished my last 6oz glass of straight protein today (I managed it without adding the stevia, too) I did drink it all at once, the egg smell is the worst part about the egg whites.... I will definitely try using it in the future for my fruit protein shakes/smoothies, etc.
E- I know the splenda is a NO... not sure about the cinnamon. I wouldn't just to be safe, but I am doing it to the letter, and if you can't do that- I would think cinnamon would be the better bet... I will look again and see if I see any comments about it in the book. ( I saw on (Diet Doctor,I think?) that cinnamon helps regulate the blood sugar/insulin reaction- but I'm not sure how much of an effect it has.
Speaking of sugar- the Fruit Flush plan also says that the fructose in fruits takes like 90 minutes (doesn't refined sugar take less than 30??) to get into your bloodstream and it has a very slow effect on your blood sugar. (Just FYI- I had been wondering. I had seen comments lately about higher and lower GI fruits and he says that with fructose it is not really an issue).
Good luck, Ann... the cruise sounds great! Hope this kick starts your system for you!!
I am glad to be past the 4pm protein, but now thinking that after dinner until bedtime seems like a long time... I will be drinking a lot of water, I guess! :)
I usually will have an apple, or some almonds or something in the evening....
One other comment I have re: the topic of this board (not the posts)... the thing I like about this Fruit Flush is that it is all natural ingredients and does let the body do its own flushing... Jay says that in the booklet, too. (And that it doesn't take some exotic ingredient to detox the body).
Best wishes to everyone - I look forward to hearing how you are doing, Ann... and any other 1st dayers... :) we have almost made it... ( I am having a mixed greens salad with baby spinach; avocado; and the lemon juice). Does anyone heat their lemons to juice them? It makes them soooo yummy and juicy- I just haven't done it. Wondering if it is ok just to microwave them? I get them heated at restraunts all the time- just not sure the best way to do it....
ReplyE- Sorry, I forgot to answer the coffee? No coffee or caffiene. No herbal teas.
ReplyThanks for the info Steph... I am starting day 3, definitely will be the easiest day of all of them. Keep us posted on your progress.
ReplyI got thru Day 1... I got a little shakey towards dinner. I sure am glad that is over! On to day 2... I love fruit so this should be easy for me! I miss Ice tea! I don't drink coffee or soda, just Ice tea!
ReplyQuick question...On days 2 & 3 can we drink as much water as we want?
Yesterday WAS going to be my first day, but after reading the other comments (very helpful!), I realized that the protein powder that I had bought had one of the sweetners in it that it says to watch out for, so I went and got a different kind last nigh, and have started this morning. Kind of glad that I waited, cause my husband has decided that he is going to do the flush, too. Hopefully it is easier if we are both doing it. Thanks everyone for the encouragement!
ReplyHi!
Congrats on getting through day 1, Ann! I love fruit, too. Every 2 hrs seems awefully soon... I had 3 red plums at 8am (I sure wanted some fruit before bed last night!! LOL) and then 2cups of watermelon at 10am. I think I will do the 2 kiwi at noon (I don't feel hungry at all and that is only 15 min away and I think I can handle a couple of kiwi easy-I love them!!) and then 2 apples at 2pm- maybe I will be hungry enough by then. I will grab a banana at 4... it is only a couple of hours before dinner, so maybe I will be hungrier for the salad... LOL... I know after 8pm I may wish I had something...? I did end up with a headache last night (but I get a lot of headaches anyway) and I have a slight one today. The plan didn't have a huge diuretic effect on me during day 1, my body was trying to resist, I think... LOL... but I have been certainly in the little girl's room a lot today!
The Fruit Flush says to drink 8-12oz every hour after the fruit meals on the 2nd & 3rd days (and to drink more if you are still thirsty)... (also on day 1 it is the same 1 hr after every protein drink and meal)... so, I guess the answer is yes... I have ...
Ally... that is great that your husband is doing it,too!
That should be great support! My husband has been extremely supportive for ME to do it, but he has no interest in doing it himself. It should help you a lot! I had to get new protein powder, too. I thought I could use some I already had and it had sucralose. Then my husband bought some with another sweetener in it and we had to exchange it... I ended up getting egg white protein.
E- congrats on making it to day 3 already. Have you enjoyed it ok? I really have. I usually try to eat pretty healthy, but I often am in a rush and am at Jr High sports events or driving to them and back in the evenings or to practices, etc and occas. fall into a time crunch and we eat what we can... I sometimes don't eat rather than eat junk but then cave in the next time... (If only I could get the concession stands to sell carrot sticks and whole grain options.... LOL)
Have a great afternoon & happy flushing :)
ReplyAny opinions / comments on the days 2/3 dinner protein water?
I guess you have it with the salad- it is listed at 6pm under the salad... and how slowly do you think is slowly??? hmmmmm...
Stephanie
ReplySounds like yall are doing a great job... I think I need to start all over, and get the right protein powder... can you get the sweetener free stuff anywhere? I also had a pre-made salad last night with pistacios...baad I know... but I did make my own dressing... hmmm ... oh and I put splenda all over all my fruit the first day. I should start over in a few days shouldnt I? yah I guess
ReplyHi gals, I heard a little about this diet so came online and you guys had the most info. I did not want to buy the diet off Jay's web site till I found out a little more. Can anyone tell me about the Whey Protein shakes? My friend said only Jay's protein shakes work but it sounds like some of you have found another product. It'd be nice to be able to use something I could find locally. Do you just add water to the powder? I'm sorry if my questions seem basic but I'd like to start ASAP! Thanks much for any help! Lori (law147@aol.com)
ReplyI made it through day one! I also got a headache, but actually felt better otherwise. Hard to believe I could tell a difference already, but it could be because I KNOW that I don't drink nearly enough water normally.
Stephanie- It sounds like you are doing great! I can hardly stand the thought of that shake tonight with my salad! I am enjoying my fruit already. My husband was trying to do the diet, but didn't follow exactly, as he had "extras" on his salad, but I appreciate his effort and support!
Lori- The shakes just take water. I got a different powder, and the one my friend used last week actually had one of the sweeteners in it, and she still lost. Hers came from the local nutrition store as well.
Hope that everyone trying this is doing well! Have a great day!
