Pushing Pills to Fat Kids

When illegal drug pushers are caught, they face the full force of the law - and are ostracized by the community. Those who target their illicit poisons towards children demand an extra measure of repulsion and disgust.

So what about herbal diet pills? If junk food advertising is under scrutiny, then what about those ads that target diet pills to children? BioSlim does exactly that. They have a range of diet pill formulas specifically for the 7 to 15 age group - called the BioSlim Youth System. Yes, now "You can give your child the gift of a healthy lean body with the BioSlim Youth System".

The BioSlim Youth System
The 'system' comes with a book, an entertaining video, an interactive CD-Rom - and is all marketed with TV advertising. Most of these resources probably have some good nutritional advice - however that cannot conceal the fact that the core product here is based on the ingredient Citrus Auranteum (bitter orange extract). Bitter orange is used in many diet pills. It stimulates the sympathetic nervous system - and is in the same class of stimulants as ephedrine. I imagine it won't be long until it comes under the scrutiny of the FDA (see more on Are any diet pills safe?).

Despite the glossy posters, interactive CD-Roms, and shiny happy faces on the adverts - I wouldn't want to be giving Citrus Auranteum to a 7 year old. Please manufacturers, let's look for some other solutions here. Maybe you should give away copies of Dance Dance Revolution instead...

I don't think anyone needs diet pills, regardless of if they're kids OR adults. They are meant to be taken as part of a healthy diet, but most people have the following happen to them. I've seen it with many of my overweight friends and colleagues.

1.) What happens is that ultimately a person will start a "diet" and take these diet pills while eating right. In fact, they will start eating perfectly. No going out to eat, fruits and veggies, and exercise.
They will then begin losing weight for the 1st month and be so excited.

2.) When the weight loss slows during the following months (which is normal), if they haven't given up already, they will feel like they are doing something wrong and start giving up. At this point they will still be taking the diet pills, but slowly going back to what they were eating before.

3.) Finally, they will give up completely, they will go off the pills, eat like they did before the diet, and ultimately the pills will have screwed their metabolism up SO badly that they will actually put on more weight than they started with. Fact.

*DIET PILLS ARE NOT THE ANSWER FOR ANYONE.*

Eat right and exercise,

As far as this story goes, I think it's absolutely disgusting that they are marketing these pills to children. If anyone is susceptible to the adverse effects of drugs, it's children with growing bodies. Plus what does this teach them. If you have a problem, forget working at it by eating right and exercising, cram these pills down your throat and you'll see magical results.

Parents need to get their kids outside again. I'm only in my mid-20s, but when I was a kid I'd be out all the time riding my bike around town, playing manhunt with the neighborhood kids, and generally having a good time with others that involved exercise. Then again, we didn't eat out much either, and when we did it was a treat. The Playstation/Gameboy generation needs to put down the fast food and get outside.

Eat right and exercise,

Disgusting but not surprising.

What a great message for kids – eat junk food, get fat, and then take pills to try and solve the problem. No need for healthy nutrition.

The supplement industry has a few reputable companies that provide good quality products. This amounts to about 5% or less of the total.

The rest are largely made up of a dishonest element that sells useless and often potentially harmful products to unsuspecting consumers at a huge profit.

An alarming number of individuals in this industry are ex-felons – just the people I want bottling and selling nutritional and herbal products to my children.

there is a biolean out there now for adults and it is proven to work....although it comes with a hefty price tag. it has that same bitter orange extract and its description is a little scary. sadly most kids are overweight right along with their parents. i am ok with pills for an adult and then when the parent loses weight, get out and get active with their children!!! kids dont need cake and soda to be healthy! i am trying to lose weight still from pregnancy, and my 19 month olds favorite food is manderin oranges and tuna fish sandwiches!!! and he is very happy and full of energy!
thanks for listening!

well for some its harder to lose wieght like me for instance, so for thoes of you who are saying "no kids should be taking diet pills and to lose wieght on your own" are dumb because you dont have any clue how hard it is for me,and no i'm not just some 14 year old who eats consistantly or "too much" because i do eat healthy and at times if i feel i eat too much i puke purposly, or just skip a meal.so all you skinny minnys who think they know how hard it is,dont know crap.

Well, I agree with Emily. Because, for me. It's hard to lose weight. And, diet pills are probably the only answer. I exercise constantly. And i eat healthy foods. and, I stopped drinking pop [ which is told to help] and drink a lot of water. Yeah, I do all that. But, I still can't seem to shed any lbs. So therefore. It is hard for others. And, i agree with her on the whole. " All you skinny minnys out there, thinking you know crap, don't". Because, you don't. Just because you're skinny doesn't mean anything. Other people have problems... Like.. I eat when I'am bored. I eat more then I should. And, everything like that. all i need is a little help. Because, i hate the way my body looks. And, people are just telling me. Oh cut down on your meals. Exercise constantly. Drink lots of water. And everything. But, they don't know how hard it is. For me to keep it up on my own. I need help. Someone to be there, and show me things. And, someone to make me stick to it. So if anyone has any answers, on how to lose some weight or anything like that ? Will You please let me know. (: Thanks!

Hi Sammy:

I know what you mean. My daughter will be 18 and has been overweight her whole life. My husband and I and my son are not overweight and she does everything right and cannot loose any weight. We finally went to our doctor and she just started the Biolean. To see if that helps. People just don't understand that some people are just prone to being overweight no matter what they do. Good luck.

Okay I've been trying everything to loose weight. especailly working out. Every day during school I go to football practice in 100 degree weather. I still haven't gotten any skinnier. I've even gone to just eating one meal a day. Doesn't work. Diet pills is what I might have to turn to. I'm 5'7" 15 years old and 200 pounds. I dont look like it but about 3/4 is muscle but i still need to loose fat. Badly.
