Barbie Rage
No other toy or brand name provokes such a response. According to research undertaken by the University of Bath - Barbie dolls are the most hated of toys. Scalping, decapitation, burning, breaking and even microwaving - such is the fate of most Barbie dolls.
“The children never talked of one single, special Barbie. The girls almost always talked about having a box full of Barbies. So to them Barbie has come to symbolise excess. Barbies are not special; they are disposable, and are thrown away and rejected,” Dr Nairn said. She added: “On a deeper level Barbie has become inanimate. She has lost any individual warmth that she might have possessed if she were perceived as a singular person. This may go some way towards explaining the violence and torture.”

"On a deeper level Barbie has become inanimate."
Wasn't Barbie always inanimate? My Barbies never got up and started walking around. If they did I probably would have beheaded one too.
ReplyIt seems to me the researchers are struggling to figure out why Barbie. Maybe because nearly every girl has one (or many)?
ReplyMaybe because Barbie gets the rough treatment because as a "plastic icon" she represents some artificial ideal? And kids in general don't like artificiality.
ReplyPastaQueen: You're thinking of Bride of Chucky. Or maybe Tara Lipinski.
Who paid for this research? Aren't there diseases that need to be cured?
ReplyPart of it may be the resentment and jealousy of perfection in that it reminds us of our flaws – a sort of torture and kill the competition phenomenon.

ReplyWhen I was 7 or 8, I had one Barbie, and Donny and Marie Osmond dolls. I misunderstood their relationship, and I thought Donny and Marie were MARRIED to each other. (Hey, they had the same last name.) Anyway, with the dolls, Barbie was ALWAYS trying to break up Donny and Marie! I can't imagine where the hell I came up with that scenario.
ReplyLike PastaQueen brought up, Barbie is inanimate anyway. I'd be more worried if girls thought she was real.
There's no such thing as Barbie rage. I cut my Barbie's hair because I wanted to practice being a beautician.
I didn't have a favorite Barbie because they were all naked and I forgot which costume went with which doll.
As for the burning, I never did that, but I'm sure kids were experimenting to see what would happen, not that they were angry with Barbie.
This researcher is pulling this stuff out of her arse.
ReplyI tortured my Barbies, they we voodoo dolls. I thought if I 'blessed' one of them as a person I hated, whatever happened to the Barbie, would happen to that person I hated. I was quite disturbed. Now as a teenager, I am a full blown gothic/emo.
ReplyI was the opposite of you ladies , I knew which dress went to which doll , kept her hair brushed and took great care of them..maybe it's a matter of money...I was by no means rich I don't even think I was middle class , when I got Barbies I took care of them because that's all I had....and I still have all my Barbies stuff , in a box , I won't even let my own daughters play with them ,mean I know , but I didn't take care of them for so long to have them not taken care of by my own girls.....
ReplyOh come on, you are a mom now, and you can't even give up your childhood toys? You would think becoming a parent would reorganize one's priorities...
ReplyMy Barbies were well taken care of, but they went to my younger cousins (3 of them) and then finally, when the youngest one outgrew them, to an orphanage.
ReplyI used to bury my barbies in the backyard. I had a whole little barbie and ken cemetary going. Which is kind of funny because ten years later some workmen were doing work where I had buried them and brought them into my grandmother. She had a good laugh. I had mummified them(I went through a big egypt faze) and they still had their wrappings.
ReplyI never had Barbies myself, but I had friends who did, and I did enjoy playing with them, to a point. I was not as obsessed with dolls, even though I am a huge fan of feminine accoutrements such as makeup, jewelry, shoes, etc. For some reason dolls just weren't as interesting to me as music was - that was my obsession from an early age.
As for the kids doing damage to their Barbies (or any other doll for that matter) it seems to me that they have some issues to resolve, and I don't mean that to be funny. Seriously, why would a kid carry out torture on an object that represents a person, however unrealistic it may be?
Plus, that's money down the drain. Their parents should be livid.
ReplyMy parents were too poor to buy me a Barbie. No wonder I have issues.
ReplyI used to love Barbies ( I have tons) I grew out of them. . . I now think Barbie is a toy that hurts childen. . . Have you ever thought about what seeing a Blue eye, Blonde, with HUGE boobs, and an inpossibly small wast might do to a little girl? I used to want to dye my hair blonde and get blue contacts cause thats how i though i was soposed to be. Barbie is a bad toy to give little girls
ReplyThats a lot of pent up violence and hatred out there.....its just a dumb doll.
ReplyCome to think of it all my dolls, and I had a collection of 45 or some absurd number ended up being chewed by my dogs or "be-headed" by my brother & his friends!
ReplyNot violence-just boredom.
I say they shouldnt be put in the microwave, I'd much rather put them in the oven. Well, after trying to flush them of course. Either way, barbie is a doll who most little girls spend the day playing with and teaching them on how to be a whore or maybe something else. I dont think little girls should recieve barbies. Why? They give paople a fake inpression. They have been some of the reason some women have eating disorters, and believe that they should be perfect. And thats not fair. So i agree with the people who say barbie is a bad toy for little children. And no, not just girls.
ReplyOh my word people, it's just a stupid doll. How can you have such strong feelings about it?
About Barbie being blue eyed, blonde, huge boobs etc etc, if Barbie had been brunette, chubby and flat chested, then little girls would want to be brunette and have flat chests. Whatever Barbie looked like, it would've been a lose/lose sitution!
When I was little I also screwed up my Barbies, but it wasn't because I had anger issues. It was plain old curiosity and boredom!
Let's stop being ridiculous!
Replyagreed all the way. ^^^^^
ReplyI used to bite the legs of my Barbie dolls.
Replyum, since when is barbie the most hated toy for a little girl?
Replyi agree! barbie was SO popular
