Salmon: So Much for Healthy Proteins

I recently asked my doctor this question: "what is the perfect meal?". He suggested a plate half-filled with a mix of vegetables and a large serving of fish. Seafood is a great source of protein, either lean, or with an abundance of healthy fatty acids. However the issue of pollution and contamination is a constant concern.

Salmon on iceIt's frustrating. You make an attempt to educate yourself about healthy food, even bothering to pay extra for good food. There is always talk of toxin in seafoods, and this latest report is disturbing.

Researchers found that the contaminant levels in farmed salmon from certain regions of the world increased the risk of cancer enough to outweigh the heart-health benefits of salmon.
Farmed salmon from Europe has the highest level of toxins. The study recommended that people should only eat salmon from Europe once every five months. It's not surprising that diets such as the South Beach, or the Perricone Prescription call for wild Salmon - but then how safe is that?

People get tired of hearing about the latest nutrition scare or even about "healthy" nutrition. It seems your damned if you do, and damned if you don't. If you eat lots of vegetables, how much pesticide residue might you be eating? If you eat lots of tuna and salmon - who knows what other trace substances you are taking in?

It is frustrating trying to figure out what to eat. I think that is why so many people just say ____ it and head for the Golden Arches.

I try to eat a variety of protein sources including fish, chicken and beef – this way I have equal chances of getting mercury poisoning, bird flu, mad cow disease, e-coli infections and a host of other plagues - if you believe the news that is. If I am feeling adventurous I might have some raw oysters for a shot at hepatitis. I say why discriminate?

I also use a lot of whey and soy protein supplements. In fact some days if I make the mistake of watching the news I eat nothing but supplements. Picture me hiding in the dark with a protein bar, a bottle of distilled water and a flashlight - afraid to open my refrigerator for fear of being contaminated with some terrible pathogen.

Speaking of supplements I use a pharmaceutical grade fish oil for EPA/DHA omega 3 fatty acids – this is the best way to get the proper amount without the contaminants. Email me if you want some info on this.

The media of course is in the business of selling the media – and the best way to do that is to scare us to death on a regular basis. Tune in tomorrow for more terror.

Remember, the big money that controls the food industry also controls the media (and everything else including the government) – so in effect the news and the commercials have essentially been blurred into one giant broadcast designed to control our behavior on all levels. You have to have ADD to watch it for more than five minutes – which is OK since according to them most of us have that too.

So turn off the TV and eat what you know is healthy – or at least as healthy as you can find in this world we live in.

I'm curious as you mention the pesticide residue on vegetables. How easy is it in your area to buy organic fruit and veg? Is it something that people there do?

Here's a great website that lists "best and worst seafood choices":
http://www.oceansalive.org/eat.cfm?subnav=bestandworst
Good salmon news: according to the website, wild salmom from Alaska is both "Eco-Best" and free of any contamination warnings, including these wild Alaska salmon varietes: chinook, chum, coho, pink and sockeye.
The site also lists well over 20 other such "good fish".

Scott: Organic fruit and vege are available, but always at a price premium. For the average joe consumer, it's rare enough to start increasing vegetable intake, let alone organics. It would be great if ALL f&v were organically grown!

Regarding the price premium, it's gradually coming down (at least in the UK) as more and more people are buying organic produce. Within a couple of years it should be the same price as other foods.

I have about had it trying to figure out what in the world to eat. This is so much disinfo out there that it is almost impossible these days to figure out what is what. Carb or low carb, fat or no fat, calories or low calories, fish or mercury. AHHHHHHHH.

Michael, I'm with you. The foods that are good for you have the toxins, and opinion about what is good for you changes all the time. Eggs are bad for you; now eggs help you grow memory cells...

Eggs are not bad for you. The idea that the yolks are filled with "bad cholesterol" is rubbish.

Ben, I know that, but for years they were supposed to be bad for you. That is exactly what I was trying to say, they are constantly coming up with new research that calls formerly "bad" foods good, and vice-versa.

Just a little comment to say that even organic food may have toxins (natural toxins) because they haven't been treated so... Agree with some other posts above, just eat as diverse as possible and in quantity corresponding to your weight, metabolism and activity is I think the best (except that you still can say it might increase a little bit allergies) so that you get a little bit of everything you need. Of course just remember to not push too much on oil, sugar, and salt ;-)

I'm sorry, but, I can't give up Salmon. Fish are my weakness.

One thing that gets me wondering is that, if some these so called healthy and natural foods are so dangerous,...how come the media doesn't about the boxed/canned, processed instant foods that makes up most of the overall items in the grocery store?. I know exactly why..but it seems that natural wholefoods are always the foods being picked on. Those processed can/boxed foods have tons of chemicals, pesticides, etc.....moreso than your average produce.
Oh well... I wonder if there are any healthier foods on the moon :-p
