Coca Cola Blak: Coke + Coffee

Coca Cola are set to launch a new blend - a mix of "mid-calorie" Coke plus coffee called Coca-Cola Blāk:

It is a blend of unique Coke refreshment with the true essence of coffee and has a rich smooth texture and has a coffee-like froth when poured. We believe we have created a new category of soft drink – an adult product in a carbonated beverage – and a whole new drinking experience.

The drink will appear in France in January 2006, followed by several countries (including the US). Pepsi attempted a similar drink (Pepsi Kona) about 10 years ago (it was a failure). Coca cola Blak is apparently similar to C2 (half the sugar, calories, and carbs of regular Coke).

Call me a purist but if you want to drink coke - then get a can of straight coke. If you want coffee - go and get yourself a double shot espresso.

The world hasn't seen anything yet. I am about to launch
a drink in Australia that Coke Blak industrial chemists are going to be jealous about. I developed it in 1998 its
the world's first carbonated coffe drink.. more soon.

Blak is really good. First of all, you have to like Coffee - duh. Secondly, you must realize that it isn't meant to replace a regular coke or other type of soda. It's a specialty drink. You'd buy Blak just like you'd buy one of the Starbuck's drinks they sell at convenience stores.

I think most of the bad reviews come from people who don't realize this and who don't like coffee to begin with.

Taylor is wrong, too! One of the whole points about Le'Chat.'s principle is that you're removing/adding concentrations to an already balanced equilibrium *in a closed system*. When the coke is sitting still with no cap on it, the eq. is balanced, but the system is not closed. When the mentos are added and the CO2 is allowed to leave the surrounding H2O complexes, it won't dissolve into the surrounding coke liquid a la Le' Chat.'s principle because the partial pressure above the soda, at that instant, is far less than in the soda. Hence it boils out instead. This is the same thing, actually, that is occurring when you first open a bottle of soda. Upon manufacture, more CO2 is present than desires to dissolve in the stated equilibrium reaction (H20 + CO2 H2CO3), but at higher than atmospheric pressure. When you open it, the partial pressure of CO2 above the surface is lower than that in the liquid, so it rushes out... Same reason coke more fizzy when poured over ice than just in the glass by itself.

Hope everyone enjoyed the real science.

We got the Coke Blak in Atlanta several months ago, and I was very eager to try it. I love the taste, but agree it would be a bonus if there were a completely sugar free version. It's not for everyone, obviously. If you really love coffee, chances are it will appeal to you. I wouldn't expect kids to like it (just read some of the posts here) but then again it isn't an energy drink, people. It's a soft drink that happens to combine Coke with coffee...period.

Hey-- I haven't tried coke blak or bibicafes or anything like that. I am from Canada..we don't have it :(
After reading many of your comments (especially the one that Coke Blak contains aspartame, total yuck) I went tinto the kitchen craving something "different". I had a little coffee left from my brewed coffee earlier (about one ounce) and I opened a can of Pepsi (no Coke left;()
I poured half the can in the one ounce of Tim Horton's coffee and I got this frothy delightful drink! The froth doesn't go down, it's so cool, and better yet...it tastes great, is giving me a jolt of energy and I imagine way cheaper than to buy it!!
JUst thought I'd let you know ...I love it!

Taurine is a conditionally-essential amino acid which is not utilized in protein synthesis, but rather is found free or in simple peptides. Taurine has been shown to be essential in certain aspects of mammalian development, and in vitro studies in various species have demonstrated that low levels of taurine are associated with various pathological lesions, including cardiomyopathy, retinal degeneration, and growth retardation, especially if deficiency occurs during development. Metabolic actions of taurine include: bile acid conjugation, detoxification, membrane stabilization, osmoregulation, and modulation of cellular calcium levels. Clinically, taurine has been used with varying degrees of success in the treatment of a wide variety of conditions, including: cardiovascular diseases, hypercholesterolemia, epilepsy and other seizure disorders, macular degeneration, Alzheimer's disease, hepatic disorders, alcoholism, and cystic fibrosis. You Have it all Wrong

it happens because of a so called "rough" surface giving CO2 places to "land" and "stick" to the mentos When the mentos dissolves all the CO2 is released and the reaction forms

WTF??? I love Coke, especially Coke Zero and their other product Vault, but this is disgusting!! Plus its like $1.20 for 8 or 10 oz. Don't waste your money, drink Vault for caffiene or maybe just plain coffee like the rest of the world.

I'm waiting for them to come out with "caffeine free Coca Cola Blak".

That should be interesting...

Is pepsi max and mentos mint the best combination or is there something that gives a even more great effect? I heard pepsi twist would work even better...?

you should try mintos and coca-cola together. because it is funny what happens; like when you first try it all the coke in your mouth and the mintos, just turns into fom and it is real cool,AKA awsome. :))

I really enjoyed the Coke Blak, but it's much to expensive! Sort of like a nice "after-dinner" drink you can have any time. Don't care for consuming "fake sugar" though, so that and the cost keeps me from buying it.

I like it. It's good, surprisingly. And it mixes well with vodka for an instant Black Russian. It is frothy when you pour it. It's different, not quite like a coke but not like a cup of coffee either....Good for an after-dinner sip.

Im from Australia but i was fortunate enough to get a couple of bottles of Coke Blak when i was in Vancouver for a school trip last year. They were giving them away for free as a promotional thing - Me and my friend fell in love !!! Its the best thing ever. When we got back to Australia we couldnt shut up about it and were desperatly waiting for the release here. But it never came - and never will. How depressing - there would be a huge market here to - especially in South Australia because nearly everyone drinks Iced Coffee - and not the coffee shop kind but the flavoured milk carton kind - which you americans dont seem to have. So i think thats why it was a flop there and it wouldnt be one here. I NEED COKE BLAK

you can get kini or jolt which are the same thing but just nicer or you can make your own

Coca-Cola BlaK copycat recipe (first pass)

12 oz of Coke Zero
2 tbsp of Autocrat Iced Cappuccino mix.
Stir the soda a little bit to get rid of some of the carbonation

I chose the Iced Cappuccino mix because it is more coffe-ish and less syrup-ish (i.e. less sugar) than the regular syrup used to make coffee milk. Also, it has more caffeine in it than the regular Eclipse and Autocrat (which are made by the same company anyway).

I used the calories as a rough guide to estimate the amount of mix which might be needed. My recipe comes out to about 50 calories
