Six Pack Abs: Reality Check

While flicking through the TV channels, I had the misfortune to come across a fitness infomercial. Not just any infomercial - but a mini-epic flaunting one of those "6 pack abs" machines - namely the Ab King Pro. The commercial was a visual feast - sculpted physiques, smooth flawless tanned bodies, and, of course, rock hard abdominals.

Somehow I don't think his
bulging quads came from this machine
These commercials are among the most deceptive, dishonest, and downright sleazy sales-pitches you can find. Somehow, they give the impression that a simple ab exercise leads to a completely defined and muscular body. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Great abs have become the epitome of physical perfection - particularly among men. This obsession has been driven (in part) by mens magazines who equate a rippling Rectus Abdominus with virility, health, and happiness.

Here is a reality check:

  • You cannot spot reduce fat (except with cosmetic surgery).
  • An abdominal machine will aid in strengthening your stomach muscles, but will not magically strengthen all of your other muscles or miraculously melt fat from all over your body.
  • In order for abdominal muscles to be seen, your overall body fat percentage must be reduced. As a general rule men may need to be < %10 body fat, and women < %14.
  • Reducing body fat whilst maintaining (or even growing) muscle requires a consistent and long-term regime of correct diet, strength training, and cardio.
  • It is quite possible to train the abs without any gimmicky machines (there are many exercises out there - think crunches, hanging leg raises, side crunches).

Save your $119.99 - or you may end up feeling like Mark of Quebec:

i find this product cheap and totally exaggerated and over rated for its effect. do not buy this product

I have tried exercising in the past, but due to ill health I gave up. I tried all the ab equipment in an effort to regain my figure, but none was really effective. I now have diabetes, so I have to be careful to eat enough carbs. I bought the Ab King Pro based on the ads, but found it exhausting just setting it up. It took me two sessions before I could drop it down below the beginner position. I find it does tighten the ab muscles as much as I can stand. I do walk and I also use a cardioglide. This site has given me a lot of good advice, which I plan to implement. I don't feel like I wasted my money, as now I have it, I'll use it. I can't afford to belong to a gym. I'll be frogging and vacuuming from now on!

The shape of the abs is determined by tendons that are stretched over the rectus abdominus muscle. Those tendons are completely genetic. In other words, you're stuck with whatever shape you have.

To get abs, start doing HIIT. If you run 10 miles, you might burn 500-600 calories which is equal to a turkey sandwhich, you must have a calorie deficient diet to lose fat. HIIT (high intensity interval training) enables your metabolism to burn harder throughout the entire day. A regular metabolism burns 2,000 calories a day, that same person doing HIIT can get it up to 3,000+ calories a day. Once again, to lose fat you must burn more calories then you eat. Carbs in the morning, fat in the evenings and get that metabolism working for you.

A small reality check: during my last 10-mile run (two days ago), I burned about 1,400 calories. The last turkey sandwich I ate (a few months ago) had about 300 calories...Reply

a 10 mile run is not interval training. interval training is short burst high intensity training with breaks which is repeated 3-5 times in one session, long distance running and jogging will help you in the short term but when you get to around 12 percent body fat you will need too run ridiculous lengths to achieve a six pack. This is due to the body becomming more efficient at burning fat and thus it will burn less fat which means you will need to do more cardio too burn the same amount of calories. Interval training is a much more effective method then regular aerobic cardio and increases the metabolic rate far further and quicker then any regular exercise will.

Lalala I can't hear you... I hate running, but doing it in short spurts (HIIT) makes it tolerable to me. So I don't wanna hear running is better than HIIT, no matter how true it may be.

First try doing some crunches in maybe 3 sets of 20(if you can you 100 your doing them wrong) and some leg raises. Second yes your bf% is over 10% and I don't want to sound like a jerk but you'll thank me when you realize this is true before you make a fool of yourself. You arent big, yes its true you are also skinny, you dont know a thing about lifting, anyone who lifts and saw you do 300 sits ups would laugh. Try doing mark rippetoes workout, or bill stars 5x5.

Hello I am a 14 year old boy. Weigh only 125, and would like to get a six pack, and just get more muscular. What do you all recomend?

It all comes down to three things:

1) Diet
2) Cardio
3) Ab Excercises

Notice the order I put them in. Yea, ab excercises are last. Diet will obviously remove some fat. Get a lot of your calories from protein. Let your calories be benefitial. Extra cardio is good for the stubburn weight that everyone seems to be trying to burn off but can't. It kick starts your metabolism and burns extra calories on top of whatever calories are not even reaching your system thanks to your diet. And the ab excercises will make your abs stronger, that's all. I'm not saying that excercises and lifting aren't important in getting six pack abs, but diet and cardio should be your first priority. Work your abs AND entire core 2- 3 times a week for about 15- 20 minutes.

Remember, when your doing all of this you'll be tempted to cheat. Whether you're a sucker for chocolate cake and ice cream, or you'd rather use momentum to propell yourself to the top of a crunch, it is better to do less and do it right than to cheat. Your only cheating yourself after all. Keep at it too. Results may seem impossible to acheive, that's what I thought when I first began my quest for six pack abs. But if you just make it a part of your daily life it'll go by that much quicker.

Oh and the article's right. There are no shortcuts to six pack abs. This is the quickest way so even if you know you won't see those abs sticking out for months you should just start now. I repeat, there are no shortcuts. You'll either work for months to get nice abs, or you won't get them at all.

hi im 19 years old 6ft tall my wieght is nearly 130 i was really slim before i started training and 24weeks into my training and i am seeing good gains i can say that getting your body into shape is HARD work and takes alot of motivation, never give up always remember winners will always win losers will always lose be a winner!!!
i already had a six pack before i started the gym which was very faint, but now i have an 8 pack coming i can see excellent improvements as i can see my abs comin out more-
my regular excersice is
Monday- Chest, Biceps, Triceps, abs crunch
Wednesday- Back, Shoulders, Arms, abs crunch
Friday- Arms, Chest, Legs, abs crunch

the best way i have found to make better abs improvments are to do 3 reps of 10 thats starting off with that then you should gradually move up to more sit ups in one rep! i am currently doing 3 reps of 50 sit ups on a slanted sit up bench(cost no more then £15) the rep includs curled sit ups as in right elbow touching left knee and vice verser not just back and up as your just working one way!

my daily eating diet is-
Breakfast, 2 eggs, beans, 2 toasts 1 glass of orange juice

Lunch, Pizza, salad or sandwich

small snacks during the day and no fizzy drinks at all plently of water.

Dinner, Chicken, pasta, curry(meat)

i have found that this is working for me & can for others but MOTIVATION should never give up! i will post a picture of myself later on..

To everybody:
cardio exercises are an essential part of weight-lifting/body-building/strength-training.....and let me tell u through experience, that running on the treadmill is absolutely USELESS. now u guys are probably thinking im crazy, but trust me, if u wanna really loose fat, do the cardio exercises outdoors..play an intense sport like football/soccer/tennis/long-distance running, not for the purpose of losing fat, but for enjoyment..u'll see urself getting fitter, and slimmer...combine this with weight training 4 times a week...and do basic ab exercises, (like crunches, sit-ups, leg raises etc.)so that u can maintain good posture.i've only been training for a month, and i already have a 4-pack, and almost no fat on my body.

since, ur only 14, concentrate on growing tall at this age. play intense sports. do about 300 situps a week(3 days a week, so 100 situps on alternate days), 300 pushups a week, 30 pull ups a day, and if ur not into sports, run atleast a mile and a half everyday....

I have had a six pack since i was 11. I come from a muscular family with a few bodybuilders. I have never had to work for my muscles, however, that being said I was playing alot of different sports during my teenage years, from Soccer, to Martial Arts, Rugby, Track, i was playing sports nearly every single day. I have never lifted weights, or in engaged in any bodybuilding regime for more than 3 days. I still have a six pack.

I will keep my information jargon free and limpid.

To attain a six pack, be weary of your diet, do not consume many foods that are high in sodium. Males need approx less than 10% bodyfat for abs to appear. Monitor your bodyfat frequently with calipers. As mentioned already, you cannot isolate fat from one part of your body, concentrate on reducing fat from your whole body rather than from just your abs.

I dont subscribe to the notion that stipulates you do a ridiculous amount of sit ups or other abdominal excercise to attain a six pack. While these excercise are great, you simply need to reduce your body fat in order to get great abs. Cardio is the greatest tool to accomplish this.

There are a number of myths that pervade the internet. If you are an absolute beginner, seeking to attain a six pack, or change your physique, i highly recommend that you buy a book, or visit a library, for hard cold predicate information about how to change your body. There are a number of great books that have greatly assisted my peers, and although the internet is an amazing resource for changing your body or getting abs, the best place to start, is with a book. Trust me. Good luck!

get a 6 pack in 10 days! i did! i started with a 2 pack, like, virtually no abs! i am 11.4% body fat, and this really worked for me!..

1) when you wake up, do 100 crunches.
2) after breakfast, do 100 oblique crunches
3) after lunch, do 100 crunches
4) before dinner, do 100 oblique crunches
5) before bed, do 125 crunches

do this for 10-15 days, and you are gaurenteed a 6 pack. yes i know, its a lot of work, but when the 10 days are over, and you're ready to show your FAT 6 pack, it really seemed worthwhile. ;)

that has to be the most idiotic advice i have ever seen you are suggesting that only muscle building exercise is necessary to gain abdominal definition which is totally untrue. also that idea has to be flawed it is a well known fact that the best way to build muscle in body building is too superset which means working one muscle then the opposite set of muscles with a short or no break in between for abs this would be upper then lower or right obliques then left obliques with hours of rest in between that's pointless. Also you have no exercise in that plan for lower abs so you will never be able to obtain a proper 6 or 8 pack only a 4 pack at the very most even with a lower body fat percentage and proper diet.

blablabla

first of all if you want a 6 pack.....the most important part is diet...next is training, and cardio depending on your body type............

if you want a 6 pack just follow a strict diet and training regimen and it will be yours within a couple months, also some random person cant just tell you a diet or training regimen, do the research and create one for yourself

There is nothing such as a six-pack machine. What you've got is in sweat and sighs. Work for it -- that's what really works.

i already have 4 clear pack and another 2 is on the way, for me the lower abs is the most difficult to be visible. i still have some small belly below my pack.. how to remove all the fat on lower abs? what is the best exercise for that?

It really frustrates me how these advertisement are even aloud to be shown. I grew up in a fairly fitness/health strict family and i know what it takes to lose waight or gain muscle and it's not as simple as these machines.

It's hard and sometimes dirty but if you wanna look like the Guys and Woman we see on TV it's called hard work!!

Who actually cares ?

Men who are 25 + and trying to gai na six-pack are just trying to get back there youth. You have to accept that your grown ups now and us children and teenagers loo kup to you and if your showing that appearance means everything, what sort of example are you showing.

But to be honest, you don't need to work hard to gain a six-pack, you just need to find a sport that you enjoy and then it will not seem as work or training. At the age of 15, i found parkour/freerunning and 1 year later, i'm still doing it and have gained the six-pack you all desire.

Freerunning is good for all ages and very enjoyable.. search it on youtube or go onto my webiste www.stevenharrison-pk.tk or my myspace.com/parkour_ste.

I have tw ofriends who are 28 and they have got their desired body from parkour so don't just think it is because i am young. :)

What if a person has got his body lean enough but the only problem is with his ab, which is too big or fatty being totally inconsisten with his lean body? How to get rid of that?

If you are a guy and you have low body fat, you will not have a ton of fat over your abs. So either you are a girl, and yes, I don't think a six-pack is a realistic goal cause it would require body fat too low for health, or you are a guy and still need to reduce your body fat more.

Honestly, all I really did to get a six pack was do ab workouts every few days and run about 6 miles a day (I do the 10k in track). I didn't need any special diet or anything I even ate junkfood a lot, but I was able to lose weight and gain muscle.

it's actually around 7-8 percent bodyfat for a defined 6 pack set of abs dieting will get you down to between 10-12 percent usually the best way to get down to below that is too speed up the metabolism through interval training aswell as maintaining a low saturated fat diet with plenty of protein and carbohydrates cutting out fatty dairy products especially things like margarine which contain a high proportion of transfats these definately will not help you. It's also important to keep yourself well hydrated drinking around 2 litres of water a day. Also whatever anyone tells you suppliments such as diet pills and energy drinks ( probably the worst thing you could ever consume) will not help you and most likely negatively effect you. Finally this total bullshit about "genetics" yes some people genetically will have more athletic physiques. However, this does not prevent anyone from achieving a well toned and healthy physique themselves with true dedication anything is possible, if you hadn't noticed the people complaing about genetics are the fat lazy slobs who are looking for a reason to excuse their obesity. Good look people :)
