Ear Stapling for Weight Loss?

I thought I had heard of every single weight loss gimmick there is - but I was wrong. Ear stapling for weight loss involves inserting a staple in the ear (apparently a stomach acupuncture point).

In September, Robin Gibson, RN rented a booth at the state fair where lines of ladies waited their turn for the latest weight loss rage.

“It's cool, hey, I like this," said one person who got the staple.

“Dieting just doesn't work, so I'm hoping that this helps," said another. via KFOR.com

The practice has led to back-alley operators illegally? stapling willing suspects. One poor person shares their story:

"When I pushed on it, stuff would come out the holes. It came out of the top hole and the bottom hole where the staple was. It was real hard for me to open my mouth; it was hard for me to chew and stuff like that. It was just unbearable; I couldn't sleep on it or anything."
Perhaps there is the weight loss secret - it's hard to overeat when you can't open your mouth properly!

UPDATE (Apr 2006):
The Mississippi Medical Board has ordered a number of weight loss businesses to stop offering the staple procedure. Many states require a license to practice acupuncture.

My husband and I heard about ear stapling around the first of the year. I got my staples on Jan. 14, and as of today, I have lost 12 lbs. When my husband saw it working for me, he decided to do it also. He went on Jan 31 and as of today has lost 8 lbs. It may not work for everyone but it has for us.

Tasha, you said you went to a clinic in Conway. I was hoping you could tell me the name of it. I live in Cabot and have been looking for someone to do it. Now that I have seen your post, I would like to look into going to the clinic in Conway. Thanks.

I had my ears stapled this morning. I am very overweight and I have tried all kinds of diets and pills. The procedure went very well. It was only a little pinch in each ear and after a few minutes, I felt nothing! Not only did I get my ears stapled, the doctor put me on a low carb diet. He said not to expect the staple to be a cure all; you also have to watch your diet and exercise. He also said there should be no problem with the staples as long as I keep it clean as he instructed and I could leave it in as long as I wanted to. The procedure only cost me $50 and he has been doing this procedure for years. I was also instructed to come in if I had any problems and he would take care of it at no charge! That's great! A lot of people are on this post with negative things to say, but you must get someone who is reputable and experienced! Anyone in the Pine Bluff, Arkansas area looking for someone, call Dr. Barbaree at (870)536-9060 and he will take care of you.

I went to the Ridgeland, MS location today (A New You - check out staplepower.com for directions, testimonials, etc.)and they couldn't have been nicer despite a full waiting room and the phone literally ringing off the hook with people wanting appointments.

The procedure was quick and easy! I'm feeling the one in my left ear a bit, not at all in the right ear. I elected to have both done to ensure maximum chance of success. The cost was $55 for both ears ($40 for one) and they will adjust/remove at no cost. I also met with a trainer at my gym today to discuss nutrition and fitness. Hopefully the combination will bring success!!

I'm really considering having the staples put in my ears. I would like to find a location in Memphis Tennessee or Little Rock ARkansas, but I don't know of any clinics that offer this procedure. Please let me know if anyone knows of one in these areas and their telephone number.

I just made an appointment at Health RX in Conway for this Thursday. I was told it was ok to apply LMX cream to my ears before I get there to numb them. I'll keep you posted on how it goes...Wish me luck!

Just wanted to comment on anyone interested in getting this procedure done to please do your homework. I work for a Chiropractor in Conway, AR who is a CERTIFIED acupuncturist and has been for over 20 years, he is the only one who administers the staples. We also council you in nutrition and suplementation. This is a life change and you need support. The other places in Conway are NOT certified acupuncturist. Dr. Martinez charges the same price and gives you more of his time. This is why KATV channel 7 called us to educate the public that you should not just go to anyplace to get this procedure done. We are not in the business to bring you in the front door put in your staples take your money and never see you again. That is so wrong!!! . Anyone wanting to comment please do so and if you want this procedure the right way you can call 501-327-2273.

You all are a bunch of quacks!!! Staples in the ears to lose weight. Some of you people need to get a life. GO grab a Calorie Queen Book and start learning how to count your calories and know what portion control is. Do the math, start exercising, and get some will power because that is the only way you are going to lose weight. Neither pill nor staple is going to control your hunger. Those who are supporting that it is working for them I truly think you are the few who are posting under different names to uphold your little quack business. If more people would take a stand and take responsibility for them selves and quit blowing money to these quacks making them into multimillionaires over quacky stuff. This world would be a better place.

I got the staple 1 week ago. It is not working for me. I even gained a pound!! I never felt any change or difference in hunger or the feeling of fullness it is suppose to give you. I removed it today. Good luck to the rest of you. I hope it works better for you than it did for me.

My ears are still a little sore feeling..sleeping on them was no problem...now if I can just remember that I have them in when I get out of the shower and stop hitting them with my towel..that hurt. I am not really sure how much they are helping yet. I do not seem to be as hungry in between meals as before and wanting to snack like I usually do. A few times yesterday after I ate..I soon felt so full that I felt sick..I am going to try and eat slower. I may not need to eat as much.

I have a daughter who is 15 and is overweight. We have tried diets and exercise but it doesn't seem to work. Is it a good idea for a 15 year old to have this done? I need to know if this is safe for a teenager.

I had my staples put in on Saturday and the acupuncturist that did it asked that even if we don't see any signs of it working to give it at least 3 weeks. There was someone that came in to get their's adjusted and I heard her say it took about that long before she seen any affects but has now lost 15 lbs. Don't give up on it after a couple days!

I think people need to apply some critical thinking to this 'new idea' I'll start a list here...

This sounds to good to be true, so you know what? It probably is!
I doubt that chiropractors and acupuncturists have the background and credentials that medical doctors have. What do the real doctors say about this?
Has any scientific testing been done to prove if this process does work? A proper double blind test would have to be done.
THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR PROPER DIET AND EXERCISE.
This is 100% true! There will never be such a thing as steadily losing weight without a diet and exercise regimen.
The people advertising this procedure sound like uneducated laymen, and not licensed or approved. Are you sure you want someone to guess at what they're doing to you?
I think any results are probably the result of a placebo effect on thoughts. For example, some people claim their car feels more powerful after a wash. Of course, we know that's not true. I'll bet people are eating less without knowing this because they WANT it to work.
Until you read in the medical journals explaining that it's a legitimate way (which I doubt) , I wouldnt waste you money on this.

I have had my staples for a week now and they seemed to "kick in" after 4 or 5 days. I stated to notice an increase in thirst and decrease in appetite, and I lost 3 pounds. I also work out 5-6 days/week for at least an hour. It may be a placebo effect as mentioned in the post above, but I have tried worse things to manage my weight!!

I just happened up on this website when I was researching this topic. My mother in law wants me to try this with her. To be honest, I doubt that it works, but after reading all this I have to try it. I am about 30 pounds overweight and would love to get the weight off and stop smoking. So I am going to try it and let ya'll know if it works for me.

I went yesterday 2/14/06 to Appetite RX in Benton, AR and got both of my ears stapled (recommended if you want to lose more than 20lbs.).Cost $55.00 They were very professional and I had to watch a 31/2 minute tape on the history of stapling and instructions. When they put in my staples all I felt was the pressure of the device used on my ear.I did not feel any pain.I did have a dry mouth about 1/2 hour later and drank lots of water. I was told this might happen.I had no pain after I slept last night.I was told you do not have to touch the staples only use a Qtip to clean for the first 2 weeks.
I will let you know how I do.

Hello guys, I had my ears stapled on Friday, Feb. 11th and so far, I've lost 3 pounds. They really do work even though I was skeptical at first. But then I decided, 'what's 50 bucks?' If it doesn't work, you get them removed and forget about it. Mine are working and I eat about a third of what I ate before. Don't be misled though..I still get hungry, but when I try to eat, I just can't eat it all. That's how I'd say it works..something like having your stomach stapled. I will keep posting though.

hi. i'm going tomorrow with my friend to get a weight loss staple and quit smoking staple at A New You in Ridgeland, MS. honestly i think it's a little on the stupid side but i guess i'll see. my mom wants to get a weight loss staple and i told her she should just go get her ear pierced in a normal spot and tell herself it'll make her lose weight... i think it's all a mind game. but that's also why i'm going tomorrow... i'm going to watch my friend do it and see how it turns out and see if the results look like it's worth it so i know whether my mom should go or not.

People have been telling me that this was the ONLY thing that worked to help them lose weight. Does anyone know where you can be certified in this? I am an acupuncturist but had never heard of the STAPLES before. Thank you for any info. I've heard of only chiropractors using the technique.

I had the stapling done about 2 wks. ago at Benton, AR.
I couldn't tell any difference after one week so I returned and had them redo them. It has been about 4 days now, and I still can't tell that they do anything. A friend also said she had hers removed b/c she couldn't tell that they worked either. Hope you all have better luck.

This message is for LW-- I live in Jackson MS and I had the procedure done, however, my friend and I have not had much success with the stapling but we are not going to give up. I guess we will get them repositioned. The place is located in Madison and is called "A New You".
